Chapter 6: Sexual Companionship
As the clock ticked past midnight, the door to the master bedroom creaked open. Looking thoroughly reluctant, Gu Jinxi spread a duvet over the king-size bed, then picked up a body pillow and carefully drew a boundary line down the middle.
“Let’s be clear—this is a temporary measure purely for my personal safety.” She looked at Chi Yuejing. “I’ll arrange to have a new bed delivered as soon as possible…”
Chi Yuejing slowly lifted her eyelids. Her slightly upturned peach blossom eyes shimmered with light, glittering like a galaxy under the lamp’s glow. The dark irises shifted slightly, revealing a hint of amusement.
“No need to be so nervous,” she tilted her head, teasing, “If I remember correctly, in our marriage, I am the ‘wife.’ You don’t need to be so guarded around me.”
Gu Jinxi’s expression grew complicated. For some reason, every word from this woman—though seemingly casual—seemed to pull them closer into something intimate. She lowered her eyes, hiding her embarrassment, and quickly changed the subject. “It’s late. Do you want to shower first?”
Chi Yuejing shook her head. “The military just sent over an urgent file. I need to deal with some work first.”
As if to prove her point, she stood and walked toward the desk, summoning a holographic screen as she moved. Her motions were crisp, her posture upright. The light from the screen outlined her slim silhouette—clearly the result of years of excellent training.
Gu Jinxi watched her for a moment. Once she saw that Yuejing was indeed absorbed in her work, she quietly replied, “Then I’ll go first.”
For safety reasons, she couldn’t risk going upstairs to the second-floor bathroom and had to use the ensuite instead. She hesitated at the door for a second, then decisively hit the “lock” button.
The automated bath system had already filled the tub with hot water and a forest-scented bath additive she liked. The light botanical aroma lingered soothingly in the air. Gu Jinxi hadn’t intended to soak, but the perfectly prepared water made her waver.
Chi Yuejing was busy with work anyway. Staying in a little longer… shouldn’t be a problem, right?
Thinking that, she stopped hesitating, untied her bathrobe, and stepped into the tub. The warm water wrapped around her, making her sigh in relief.
So comfortable. So relaxing.
Her entire body sank into the bath’s warmth. The water trickled across her long Alpha limbs, pooling delicately in the hollow of her collarbone like a glowing little moon. Rippling gently, it slid down her trembling curves and disappeared beneath the surface.
Just as she was immersed in bliss, a knock came at the bathroom door. Then Chi Yuejing’s calm voice filtered in: “I forgot to mention—don’t lock the door for safety reasons. If something happens, it’ll take me three seconds to kick it down.”
Gu Jinxi snatched a towel and covered her face. “I didn’t lock it…”
There was silence for a few seconds. Then Chi Yuejing chuckled lightly. “Mm, I believe you.”
The voice faded. But after that interruption, Gu Jinxi lost her mood to continue soaking. She stepped out of the tub, still dripping wet, and was about to enter the shower when her steps slowed.
…How many seconds did she say it would take to kick down the door?
With a sigh of resignation, she tiptoed to the panel and disabled the lock.
Just get through this. Once the Wusi Mine project is over, I won’t have to keep sharing space with her like this.
She quickly finished up and stepped out, the scent of her bath still lingering on her skin. She called out toward the woman at the desk, “I’m done.”
Chi Yuejing turned. Her peach blossom eyes gazed at Gu Jinxi, a soft smile playing at her lips. “Since you’re done, why don’t you wait for me in bed?”
Why do I even bother expecting a normal conversation from her?!
Gu Jinxi’s face flushed red at the teasing tone. She ignored her, walked quickly to the bed, and wrapped herself tightly in the duvet. In a small voice, she muttered, “Can you… not always talk like that…”
“Like what?”
The one being criticized remained oblivious. What made Gu Jinxi panic even more was that Chi Yuejing—right in front of her—started undressing.
“Can’t you take off your clothes in the bathroom?!”
Chi Yuejing didn’t stop at removing her jacket. Her slender fingers were already reaching for the buttons of her shirt. Gu Jinxi finally lost her composure and exploded.
Chi Yuejing clasped her shirt closed with both hands, red lips curled in amusement. A strand of hair fell by her neck, which she casually brushed aside.
“You didn’t say anything—I thought you wanted to keep watching.”
Her gaze sparkled with interest as it swept over Gu Jinxi’s flushed, almost radiant face.
Gu Jinxi had no words. She simply yanked the covers over her head, using her actions to make her stance clear.
Chi Yuejing chuckled again.
To Gu Jinxi’s relief, Chi Yuejing didn’t make any more moves after her shower. Maybe because of the security concerns, she showered quickly and even changed into long-sleeved pajamas that covered her from head to toe.
The bed was large, and even lying side by side, there was plenty of space between them. But when the mattress dipped slightly under the other’s weight, Gu Jinxi still blushed furiously and gripped the blanket tight.
From the day they married until now… this was probably the first time they shared a bed.
And in such a ridiculous, awkward situation.
Whatever sleepiness she had vanished. Every sense seemed heightened, especially the faint scent of white iris on the woman beside her—it was overwhelming.
Impossible to sleep.
“Can’t fall asleep?”
Just as the thought of getting up crossed her mind, the mattress suddenly dipped beside her. Chi Yuejing was leaning over her pillow, gazing down at her.
In the dim light, Gu Jinxi’s cheeks were flushed. Her skin was porcelain pale, so the red hue bloomed like a delicate underglaze—like tender peach blossoms in early spring.
Sensitive. Stunning. It was hard to believe she was an Alpha.
But in the next second, that beautiful face turned dark. Gu Jinxi flinched and turned away, trying to escape the dangerous proximity.
She was fast, but Chi Yuejing was faster. One hand pressed on the pillow, a long leg lightly draped over the blanket, blocking her escape with ease.
Gu Jinxi was furious, but she was no match physically. All she could do was growl, “Let me go!”
They were way too close. With the blanket between them, Chi Yuejing had practically pulled her into an embrace. Her leg pinned her down. For someone as cold and reserved as Gu Jinxi, this raw physical closeness was unbearable.
That blush flooded from her face, up to her eyes, and even to the tips of her ears, turning her into a glowing piece of living red jade.
Chi Yuejing felt her self-control beginning to slip.
She stopped teasing. Holding down Gu Jinxi’s struggling wrists, she leaned close to whisper against her ruby-like ear:
“Don’t run. I just need to make something clear. If you want our ‘rekindled relationship’ lie to hold up, we need to cooperate.”
“The inquiry office will be watching our every move. Starting tomorrow, you can’t act like you’re resisting me in public. I’ll respect your boundaries, and we’ll get along peacefully. Now tell me—can you do that?”
Gu Jinxi… was on the verge of fainting. The words were practically tickling her ear, sending a heatwave through her entire body. She turned her head with effort, biting her lip hard in embarrassment. The dewy redness of her lips shimmered, like waiting for someone to kiss them.
The blanket had slipped in their struggle, revealing a patch of pale skin. Black strands of hair. Blue collar. And that soft, glowing flesh—
Chi Yuejing’s hand, which had been holding her wrist, paused briefly.
“Can you?”
She shifted her gaze and asked again.
The woman beneath her trembled… but finally forced out a single word.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Seemingly satisfied, Chi Yuejing let go of her hand. Without looking back, she sat up, grabbed the thin jacket by the bed, and slipped it on.
“Sharing a bed the first night—I figured you’d be uncomfortable. I’ll sit in the living room for a bit. You go ahead and sleep.”
The bedroom door closed gently behind her. Gu Jinxi collapsed onto the pillow, her chest still heaving.
Stay calm. Stay strong. As long as she cooperated, all of this was just a temporary act.
Her hand clenched and loosened around the blanket. Slowly, she calmed herself and tried to fall asleep.
Meanwhile, in the living room on the other side of the door, the person on the couch wasn’t faring much better. Chi Yuejing pulled out a vial of brightly colored medicine, tipped her head back, and swallowed it before answering the call that had been flashing nonstop since earlier.
The projection lit up, and a short-haired woman appeared on the screen. She frowned at once.
“I told you—you’re still injured. If you keep using painkillers like this, your body’s going to pay for it.”
“Dr. Lan, can’t you save the lecture for when we meet in person?” Chi Yuejing leaned back casually on the couch, her voice light. “Things are urgent right now. I don’t have time for surgery.”
Lan Nuo clearly wasn’t buying it. She tapped away at her keyboard, replying dryly, “Understood, understood. You’re a superhero. I’ll sneak you more painkillers if I have to… but if that old man hits you again, I swear next time you’ll be in a fully automated wheelchair.”
Chi Yuejing chuckled. “It’s fine.”
Right now, the person she wanted to protect… was still safe, within her reach.
And that was enough.
