After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 7
Chapter 7: Military Dogs
Perhaps because her strained nerves had finally found some place to rest, Gu Jin Xiao slept soundly through the night. She didn’t even know whether Chi Yue Jing had returned to the room at all. By the time she opened her eyes again, brilliant morning sunlight was already flooding the windowpanes.
It was a beautiful day.
She stretched lazily, only to pause mid-motion as something suddenly occurred to her. She quickly drew back her arm and turned to look at the other side of the bed—only to find the second pillow cold and empty. That person wasn’t in the room.
Wasn’t she supposed to be some kind of personal bodyguard…?
The thought had barely surfaced before Gu Jin Xiao squashed it down. Fully awake now, she rubbed her eyes, adjusted the slipped-down strap of her nightdress, and headed to the bathroom.
After washing up, she loosely tied her long hair into a bun, letting a few strands fall at the sides to soften her face. She changed into a vertically striped high-neck shirt paired with tailored black slacks. The shirt fit snugly, emphasizing her waistline. She didn’t bother with accessories—just a minimalist shell-faced wristwatch.
With a clean, fresh aura, she stepped into the living room, where the rich aroma of coffee immediately tickled her nose. Her Alpha ex-wife was sitting at the table reading, a half-eaten breakfast on the plate beside her.
Gu Jin Xiao greeted her, “The coffee smells great.”
Chi Yue Jing looked up. Her gaze lingered on Gu Jin Xiao for a second before replying, “I saw some beans and ground a little—want to try?”
Despite the polite tone, she remained seated with perfect posture, showing no intention of getting up.
Gu Jin Xiao wasn’t sure what came over her—perhaps it was the relaxed scene in front of her—but she sat down across from her and casually said, “Sure, I’ll have some. Don’t want to get drowsy later… What are you eating? Is there any left?”
At the latter question, Chi Yue Jing’s expression grew more peculiar. Seeing her hesitate, Gu Jin Xiao suddenly realized, “…You didn’t plan to share with me?”
There was a soft ding as the porcelain cup was set into the saucer. Chi Yue Jing poured a cup for her and, after a brief pause, seemed to offer an explanation: “You never used to want to eat with me.”
During their two-year marriage, the time they spent together was minimal. To prove her devotion to “freedom of marriage,” Gu Jin Xiao had avoided private meals with Chi Yue Jing entirely—unless required for family gatherings.
Remembering this herself, Gu Jin Xiao felt a bit awkward. She hid it behind a sip of coffee and a smile. “It was different back then. Eating together felt like compromising. But now that we’re divorced, eating as friends is fine, right?”
“Oh? Is that so?” Chi Yue Jing arched a brow, a faint smirk on her lips. “Well, since we’re just friends, I can only offer you this much. As for breakfast… CEO Gu, you’ll have to sort that out yourself. No problem, I assume?”
She then gracefully returned to her seat—and deliberately, almost theatrically, sliced into a perfectly cooked soft-boiled egg. Golden yolk spilled onto her crisp toast, the sight enough to make anyone’s mouth water.
Gu Jin Xiao could only silently sip her coffee. Thankfully, it was excellent—smooth and rich with a hint of tropical fruit. Unfortunately, it only made her hungrier.
Setting the cup down, she glanced at the woman opposite her. Chi Yue Jing was still in that crisp Federal military uniform—white shirt pristine, collar neatly folded, her long neck partially exposed. Noticing Gu Jin Xiao’s gaze, she asked coolly, “Need to head out?”
Since they were required to move together for now, Gu Jin Xiao nodded. “There’s a project meeting this morning…”
Chi Yue Jing quickly polished off her breakfast. “Got it.”
She stood and cleared the dishes, putting them in the dishwasher. Gu Jin Xiao didn’t insist on helping and went to grab her bag. When she returned, Chi Yue Jing was already waiting by the door, holding out a paper-wrapped package.
“You’re in a hurry—I didn’t get to eat this yet.”
The package was still warm. Inside was a piece of toast slathered in peanut butter, buttery and fragrant. Gu Jin Xiao blinked in surprise, then caught sight of the tall figure walking toward the garage. Her lips curved faintly.
Soon, Chi Yue Jing pulled the car up. Once inside, Gu Jin Xiao thought of something. “If you come with me to the office, what are we telling my family?”
They’d never shown up together like this before. The moment they entered Gu Group HQ, the gossip would explode—and it wouldn’t take long to reach the family elders. Who knew what kind of chaos would follow?
“Just say we got back together,” Chi Yue Jing replied calmly, accelerating to pass a slow-moving hovercar. “The Zerg infiltrators on Capital Star are worse than you think. To be safe, we shouldn’t reveal the truth yet.”
She wasn’t wrong. Still, the deeper the lie, the harder the cleanup later. Gu Jin Xiao let out a slow breath. “I guess we don’t have a choice.”
As one of Capital Star’s most renowned energy firms, Gu Group had spared no expense on its image. Their twin towers stood tall in the business district, the taller one angled sharply at 60 degrees, gleaming and graceful—impossible to miss.
As expected, their arrival together turned heads the moment they stepped into the lobby. Before the elevator doors even closed, Gu Jin Xiao spotted employees already pulling out their communicators, no doubt excitedly spreading the news.
It was only a matter of time before both families found out. Remembering how much her parents adored Chi Yue Jing, Gu Jin Xiao couldn’t help a headache coming on. She took a few deep breaths, steeling herself to push the Ussi project forward as quickly as possible.
The elevator stopped at the 30th floor—her office level. Her assistant was already waiting. Even though they’d gotten wind of the gossip earlier, the assistant still looked momentarily stunned seeing the two striking women emerge together.
Ignoring their equally unreadable expressions, the scene of the CEO and “CEO’s wife” standing side-by-side was… undeniably picturesque.
“This is Colonel Chi,” Gu Jin Xiao said plainly. “This is my assistant, Gu Xingchen. The Colonel is… accompanying me to work today.”
She hesitated before choosing that neutral label. She didn’t dare meet her assistant’s sparkling, nosy gaze and quickly shifted the topic: “Is everyone here? We start in 30 minutes.”
The assistant nodded swiftly. “Dr. Du and Dr. Qin from the Ussi project have arrived. Captain Baker messaged—he’ll be ten minutes late. You mentioned checking the conference room first. Should I prep it now?”
That had been Chi Yue Jing’s suggestion. Since the intelligence leak likely came from within Gu Group, it was best to sweep the room for bugs before the meeting.
Gu Jin Xiao nodded. “We’ll go check it out first.”
The meeting room was at the end of the hallway. The assistant unlocked the door and flicked on the lights. It was a sleek space for about 20 people—clean lines, futuristic design, and fresh furnishings.
After opening the door, the assistant politely stepped aside to give space to the rare sight of the CEO and her “wife,” even thoughtfully closing the door behind them.
With the electronic lock clicking shut, Gu Jin Xiao’s heartbeat sped up—yet again they were alone in a room. Before she could speak, Chi Yue Jing turned around with a teasing smile. “You’ve got a good assistant.”
Gu Jin Xiao knew exactly what she was hinting at. The two of them walking into a conference room together? The implications were… rich. She nervously bit her lip and tried to change the subject—only to feel a warm hand slip around her waist.
Chi Yue Jing had silently stepped closer, trapping her between the desk and herself. Smiling, she gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind Gu Jin Xiao’s ear.
Gu Jin Xiao let out a small gasp. The faint calluses on Chi Yue Jing’s fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of her ear, leaving behind a trail of heat and tingles. She had to tilt her head back, wide eyes filled with nervous defiance.
“Colonel Chi,” she said breathlessly, pressing a hand against her chest. “We’ve got work to do.”
At those words, Chi Yue Jing chuckled softly and gently stroked her cheek before pulling something from her pocket—a compact, high-precision military-grade bug detector.
Once activated, the device began scanning the room from the center of the table outward, hunting for surveillance devices far more effectively than any commercial scanner could.
Relieved, Gu Jin Xiao relaxed slightly. With Chi Yue Jing’s help, this would be far more secure. She shifted slightly, trying to escape the flustering embrace.
The overhead lights dimmed momentarily. As if predicting her move, Chi Yue Jing suddenly leaned in close.
Warm breath skimmed her ear, igniting a blaze across her skin. Gu Jin Xiao froze—then, realizing what was happening, her heart exploded in a chaotic rhythm.
“Shhh—”
Chi Yue Jing held her close, her lips grazing that soft, pale ear she had coveted for so long.
In a low voice, she murmured, “Wife… since you’re using me like a military dog, shouldn’t I get a little reward?”
