After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 9
Chapter 9: Family
The war between humans and the Zerg had dragged on for years. Although large-scale battles had quieted on many planets, skirmishes still broke out from time to time. To maintain the army’s combat readiness, the Federal Military Administration had proposed a quarterly “Team Building Day” event for all major military institutions. Partly for training, partly to promote interdepartmental exchange.
As the safest planet in the Federation, Capital Star’s version of “Team Building Day” was far more relaxed than that of other planets. It was said that this season’s island camping trip was actually suggested by the wife of a high-ranking officer. The location was set on Rose Satellite II, a resort planet known for its dreamy silver beaches and rose-tinted sunsets, just a short distance from Capital Star.
Given the setting, it was naturally impossible to conduct intense military exercises. The organizers had simply waved their hand and allowed officers to bring their spouses along.
In the spacious and comfortable starship lounge sat dozens of uniformed Alpha officers. Many of the younger ones couldn’t hide the eager smiles on their faces.
“Brother, you’ve got to help me out this time,” one Alpha said excitedly to the man beside him. “I heard your wife has a cousin who recently presented as an Omega. No need to let that go to waste, right? Think I’ve got a shot?”
Before he could finish, two or three other young men pushed forward, scrambling to recommend themselves.
“Look at me, big bro! I’m younger than him and outrank him!”
“Get outta here! You’re only two months younger—stop pretending you’re a fresh recruit!”
You couldn’t really blame them. Omegas were incredibly rare, and their natural caution around Alphas made courtship increasingly difficult. For many single officers, “Team Building Day” had become a rare chance at romance.
After all, if an exceptional Omega had a charming and single sibling, wouldn’t now be the perfect time to make an impression? Play their cards right, and they might just win over an enthusiastic Omega lady and kiss bachelorhood goodbye…
Watching his subordinates almost come to blows, the current Director of the Central Surveillance Bureau, Stia, couldn’t help but smile mysteriously. He cast his gaze toward the Omega rest area and said slowly, “It’s not that I don’t want to help… it’s just that my wife is extremely introverted. She never dares to speak to unfamiliar Alphas…”
The second half of his sentence got stuck in his throat as he rubbed his eyes in disbelief. The radiant woman in the center of the crowd was indeed… his wife?
Not only his wife—just moments ago, all the Omegas had been demurely seated and quiet. But now, they were enthusiastically gathered around one person.
That person was a tall, elegant beauty. If she were an Omega, her height alone would be unusually striking. But if she were an Alpha… The gathered officers cautiously scanned her fair, graceful jawline, then subtly examined the snow-white neck partially hidden beneath her high-collared shirt.
“Isn’t that Colonel Chi’s wife?” someone finally recognized her. “She mentioned she’d be bringing her spouse… Oh right, I remember her saying her partner is an Alpha…”
So it was true?
As if to confirm their suspicions, a burst of light laughter drifted over—the kind that only previously-shy Omegas could produce. Stia even saw his own wife reach out and gently tap that Alpha on the arm.
His wife barely acted this affectionate with him!
Gu Jin Xiao hadn’t expected to run into anyone familiar here. Although she didn’t care for attending events in the role of “spouse,” she knew the Intelligence Division was just waiting to find fault, so it wasn’t wise to skip group activities.
She’d resigned herself to quietly enduring the trip by burying herself in work. But as soon as she entered the lounge, a soft voice called out:
“Excuse me… are you Senior Gu Jin Xiao from Chao Yun Business Academy?”
A gentle-looking Omega woman lit up with joy as she stood up.
“Senior! I’m Xia Wanwan from the Domestic Arts department! During the Intercollegiate Alpha Selection Tournament on Chao Yun Star, our whole dorm voted for you!”
The joy of meeting her idol made Xia Wanwan drop all pretense of formality. She approached warmly, saying, “I saw Colonel Chi listed as bringing a spouse and hoped it wasn’t just a name coincidence…”
Her attitude was so warm and genuine that Gu Jin Xiao, naturally polite, gave her a soft smile and said gently, “Thank you for your support. I remember the votes for that tournament were pretty expensive—you all really went all out.”
Xia Wanwan giggled with delight. Compared to the brash, muscle-flaunting Alphas who loved to boast about Alpha superiority, Gu Jin Xiao was like a breath of fresh air—refined, gentle, and deeply admired by many quiet Omegas since their school days.
“Your Omega Scholarship Fund has inspired so many students to pursue their dreams,” Xia Wanwan added. Now working for an Omega advocacy group, she admired Gu Jin Xiao deeply and quickly invited her to sit nearby, introducing her to the others.
Upon learning that the elegant, friendly beauty was actually an Alpha, the nearby Omegas were at first shy, but quickly warmed up.
Such a respectful and well-mannered Alpha—what was there to fear?
By the time Chi Yuejing returned with their ID cards, this was the scene she encountered.
Her stunning wife was surrounded by a crowd of Omegas—who, despite usually keeping their distance from Alphas, were now happily clustered around Gu Jin Xiao. One girl had even linked arms with her for a selfie.
“Colonel Chi, right?”
Before she could move, a young officer clapped her on the shoulder and teased, “So, how does it feel to have your wife be more popular with Omegas than you are?”
Everyone around burst into laughter. Stia waved her over to sit and laughed, “You single guys, don’t just laugh—go make friends with Colonel Chi! If she’s willing to put in a good word for you, you won’t have to worry about meeting Omegas again!”
Being their superior, Stia had hit a nerve. According to Gender Protection Laws, they couldn’t casually chat up Omega spouses—but if one of the spouses happened to be an Alpha…?
All at once, the single men looked at Chi Yuejing with genuine appreciation in their eyes.
Chi Yuejing hadn’t expected to be welcomed into her new group in this way. When the starship finally departed, she escaped the enthusiasm of her coworkers and returned to their private cabin—only to find her communicator filled with medical reports and carefully posed selfies from hopeful Alphas.
Gu Jin Xiao had arrived first and was now curled comfortably on the small sofa by the window, gazing out at the magnificent nebulae while nibbling on snacks gifted by Xia Wanwan and the others. Rose grapes stained her plush lips a delicate red, making them appear even more luscious and tempting.
Seeing her enter, Gu Jin Xiao looked up cheerfully and smiled with crescent eyes.
“The grapes are really sweet. Want to try one?”
Seeing that soft, pink mouth, Chi Yuejing’s mind blanked. Before Gu Jin Xiao could react, something warm brushed against her lips.
A fleeting touch.
So soft.
Chi Yuejing quickly drew back her hand and acted nonchalant. “You’ve got juice on your mouth… If those Omegas saw you like this, would they still look at you with starry eyes?”
Her lips still tingled slightly. Gu Jin Xiao instinctively licked them with her tongue, making the pink even glossier. She tilted her head slightly and grinned.
“Are you… jealous?”
The woman’s gaze glittered like starlight. Her head tilted with the elegance of a deer, crashing straight into Chi Yuejing’s heart. Her snow-white neck peeked out from her collared shirt, drawing the eye and tempting one to seek more.
Chi Yuejing kept her expression calm, but waves of emotion stirred beneath. Her voice was slightly hoarse as she said:
“Jealous? Of what?”
“Jealous of me,” Gu Jin Xiao teased, eyelashes fluttering like fans. “What, are you too proud to admit that as a fellow Alpha, I’m more popular?”
So that’s what she meant…
For some reason, Chi Yuejing felt a prick of irritation. She didn’t want to keep discussing it and replied dryly:
“What’s there to be jealous of? I’m not even into Omegas.”
But Gu Jin Xiao, pleased with her rare victory, didn’t notice the subtle shift in mood. She smirked and said:
“True, considering you used to be an Omega. Your Alpha experience must be a bit… lacking. Do you need—”
“Ah—!”
Her teasing was abruptly cut off by a gasp. The room spun as she was suddenly pinned down on the sofa, hands pressed to her shoulders.
Chi Yuejing’s breath fanned across her face and neck like soft sparks. Her long, narrow peach blossom eyes gleamed with a mysterious light, intoxicating and unreadable. The cool scent of white iris bloomed all around them like a net, pulling Gu Jin Xiao into her orbit.
“Gu Jin Xiao,” the Alpha above her murmured, licking her lips with a touch of menace, “you seem very interested in my abilities as an Alpha… care to experience them firsthand?”
