- Chapter 11 - Are You the One Qin Yiwan Likes?
The next day, the family doctor came to check on Qin Yiwan. Luo Yunye stood silently by her bedside, eyes fixed on the monitor. The lines on the screen remained steady, showing no sign of fluctuation. Her brows furrowed involuntarily.
How could this be?
Qin Yiwan had clearly realized it was a dream—so why was there still no change?
“Are you sure this equipment is working properly?” she asked, beginning to doubt the machine.
Dr. Xu Nuo responded calmly, “This is the latest diagnostic equipment. But if Miss Luo is uncertain, you’re welcome to purchase a new one and compare results.”
“Sorry, I just… can’t figure this out.”
Seeing that Xu Nuo was about to remove the device, Luo Yunye quickly stopped her. “Leave it on. I want to monitor her overnight—see if there’s any movement then.”
“Alright.”
Xu Nuo reattached the device and quietly packed up before leaving.
Luo Yunye, refusing to give up, stayed by the bed all day, eyes glued to the monitor.
That evening, there was a knock at the door.
“Come in,” Luo Yunye called without turning.
The butler, Lin, stepped in and walked to her side. “Young Madam, I did as you asked and brought money to the family of the driver responsible for the accident. But… they’ve already checked out of the hospital and moved away from their old place.”
They ran?
“The daughter has leukemia. A small clinic couldn’t have treated her. They must’ve transferred to a better hospital. Find them.”
Seeing how determined she was to locate the driver’s family, Butler Lin hesitated before asking, “Young Madam… do you suspect something? ”
Her eyes shifted to Qin Yiwan lying silently in bed, her voice low and grim. “Yiwan’s accident wasn’t just an accident. We won’t get the truth unless we find that mother and daughter.”
Butler Lin’s eyes widened in shock.
He, too, had found the circumstances of the accident suspicious. But with the police calling it a simple incident and the Qin family refusing to pursue it further, he had no authority to intervene. He never expected that Young Madam would chase the truth for Miss Yiwan’s sake.
His heart swelled with purpose. “Understood, Young Madam. I’ll get on it right away.”
From day to night, Luo Yunye kept watching Qin Yiwan by the bed. The machine remained steady the whole time. Even by 9 p.m., there was still no movement.
Her frustration mounted. Maybe the device really was broken—she’d wasted an entire day.
Luo Yunye called Butler Lin and told him to purchase a new one.
After Lin brought the new machine, he also summoned Dr. Xu Nuo to install it on Qin Yiwan again.
But once more, the lines stayed flat and unmoving.
Luo Yunye’s composure cracked.
She started to question whether the device was even capable of reading Qin Yiwan’s mental activity at all.
But Xu Nuo reassured her, “This is the most advanced equipment available in the country. It’s worked perfectly on all our other patients.”
Which could only mean one thing—Qin Yiwan truly had no cognitive activity.
The issue wasn’t the machine.
Luo Yunye didn’t know what to do anymore. She pressed a hand to her face, trying to calm her rising panic, and asked Lin to escort Dr. Xu out.
Sitting beside the bed, she gently took Qin Yiwan’s hand. “Yiwan… can you hear me?”
No matter what she said, the monitor didn’t respond at all.
Luo Yunye had been so sure Qin Yiwan was close to waking. But now, it felt like all progress had vanished.
She even started to wonder—were the dreams she had every night of meeting Qin Yiwan just her own imagination? Not Yiwan’s?
The unease simmering inside her was unbearable. Sleep would be impossible tonight. She stood, went downstairs, and asked Butler Lin for the car keys.
Seeing her in such low spirits, Lin hesitated before offering, “Young Madam, if you’re going out, please let me drive you.”
Luo Yunye didn’t answer. She drove herself to a quiet bar and ordered a drink, hoping alcohol could dull the growing storm inside her.
At first, she hadn’t cared much about when Qin Yiwan would wake up. But through spending time with her, something had changed.
That unique bond between the two of them, the trust and dependence she’d felt—it all started to mean something.
And with meaning came attachment.
And with attachment came anxiety.
Now she wanted Qin Yiwan to wake up. She had believed there was hope.
But now, all she could see was confusion.
******
Luo Yunye wasn’t the only one who waited from night to dawn.
In the dream world, Qin Yiwan was waiting too.
It had already been a year since she last saw Luo Yunye. She was in high school now.
Every day she hoped to see her again.
Every day, she waited in vain.
Eventually, she got used to life without her—convincing herself that Luo Yunye had just been a dream.
High school life was hectic and dull. Her world revolved around the routine of school and home, day after day. The monotony was suffocating, like a balloon about to burst under pressure.
She desperately wanted to breathe.
She hoped Luo Yunye would come and take her away.
But Luo Yunye never came.
It’s okay, she told herself, taking a deep breath. If Luo Yunye wouldn’t come, then she would find her own escape.
Qin Yiwan asked Butler Mo to take her out.
They went to the night market near her school. She’d heard her classmates rave about the snacks there, and she wanted to try them for herself.
Butler Mo followed behind her. Seeing the rare smile on her face, he didn’t stop her from indulging in the not-so-sanitary street food.
When she offered him a bite, he tasted it with a smile.
“It’s good, right?” she asked.
“Mhm.” Butler Mo nodded.
It had been so long since he saw her this happy.
In that moment, she was free.
She belonged to no one but herself.
“Uncle, can you spare some money? My child hasn’t eaten in days… please.”
A frail woman stood in front of them, clutching a malnourished baby in her arms. Her face was pale and gaunt.
“Uncle…”
She repeated herself pitifully, just as the baby began to wail. She rocked the child gently. “Don’t cry, baby. Don’t cry…”
Butler Mo’s heart ached at the sight. He took out his wallet and handed her a few hundred yuan.
Seeing the large sum, the woman fell to her knees, thanking him profusely.
Onlookers started to stare. Embarrassed, Butler Mo quickly helped her back up.
When he turned around, Qin Yiwan was gone.
Panic surged through him. He shoved past the crowd, eyes searching frantically.
“Miss? Miss!”
******
The room was pitch black. Qin Yiwan sat in a corner, her hands and feet bound, her mouth sealed with duct tape. She couldn’t make a single sound.
Outside the door, the voices of the kidnappers filtered in.
“I heard this girl is the eldest daughter of the Qin family. How much should we ask for, you think? A hundred million?”
“A hundred million? That’s way too little. The Qins are worth billions. She’s the sole heir—this is our one big shot.”
“Five hundred million?”
“No. Five billion.”
“Holy crap.” One of the men burst into excited laughter. “Dog-ge, you’ve got some imagination. Five billion? We’ll be set for life, never having to worry about a thing again.”
Qin Yiwan never imagined that her kindness—offering to help an elderly woman find her way—would land her here. The woman turned out to be part of a kidnapping gang. She had lured Qin Yiwan to a secluded area, where she was dragged into a van and tied up.
People always said she was lucky—born into a wealthy family, destined for a life of ease without ever lifting a finger. But no one knew the price of that fortune. No one knew that because of it, she had now been kidnapped twice.
The first time, she’d been stabbed in the waist. Worse, she’d lost her beloved younger sister. Her once-happy family had been shattered beyond repair.
She thought fate had already dealt her enough cruelty.
But apparently, fate wasn’t done.
All she’d done was try to help someone—and she’d still ended up in danger.
The door creaked open. Qin Yiwan flinched.
The two kidnappers entered, looking at her like she was made of gold. Their expressions were suspiciously gentle.
The skinnier one even came over to untie her. Smiling, he asked, “Hungry? Want a biscuit or something?”
Qin Yiwan shrank back, avoiding his hand, eyes wary.
The fat one kicked him hard. “Ergou, back off. Don’t scare the lady. We’re going to be swimming in cash soon. You can have any woman you want then—why mess with this one?”
He glared, warning sharply. “She’s our golden goose. If you lay a hand on her and mess things up, we’re done. Do you hear me?”
“I hear you, Dog-ge. I was just looking, not touching.”
They kept her in a bare room. Other than a bed, some food, and a blanket, there was nothing else. Escape was impossible.
All she could do was hope her mother would pay the ransom and get her out.
She had no idea how the negotiations were going, but when the two men returned, they were furious.
They kicked open the door, grabbed her hair, and forced her to look at a phone screen.
On the other end was Qin Rushuang.
Her expression was cold, detached. “Forget about five billion. I’ll give you five million. Return her.”
“Five million? That’s all your precious daughter is worth?”
“You ask for too much, you get nothing. Take it or leave it.”
She hung up.
From five billion to five million. Dog-ge was livid. He swept the table, sending dishes crashing to the floor.
Ergou tried to calm him. “Come on, Dog-ge. Five million is still a lot. We’d never make that much in our lives. Worst case… we have our fun with her, then hand her over.”
Dog-ge’s eyes flicked toward Qin Yiwan, curled up in the corner. He shoved Ergou aside and started tugging at his belt.
“Luo Yunye! Help me!”
The name burst from Qin Yiwan’s lips instinctively—a desperate cry.
But unlike in the movies, no guardian angel showed up in time.
******
Luo Yunye had been out drinking. When she returned home, she noticed something on the monitor—movement. The lines that had been so still all day now danced in peaks and dips.
She lay beside Qin Yiwan, gently held her hand, and closed her eyes.
She didn’t know how much time had passed before she found herself standing in a dark, bl00d-scented room.
There were no lights. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust.
And then she saw it.
A girl was swinging a stool over and over, smashing it down onto two men sprawled unconscious on the floor. Bl00d smeared the scene. One of them—the fat one—was still being struck, over and over.
Luo Yunye stood frozen, stunned. “Yiwan…?”
The girl stopped. Slowly, she turned.
Bl00d streaked her face. Her eyes were red, her expression vicious—nothing like the Qin Yiwan Luo Yunye knew.
“You came?”
She dropped the stool with a clang, grabbed a blanket from the bed, and wiped her hands clean, her tone casual.
“You’re late. They tried to touch Qin Yiwan. I took care of it.”
Luo Yunye stared at the girl.
She looked a little older now, but her face was unmistakable—she looked exactly like Qin Yiwan.
But something about her words didn’t add up.
The girl walked toward her slowly, eyes sharp and playful. Cold. Even cruel.
She circled Luo Yunye, resting a hand on her shoulder.
“So… you’re the one Qin Yiwan likes?”
The way she said it—it was like she wasn’t Qin Yiwan at all.
Luo Yunye turned, eyes locked onto the girl, unease crawling up her spine.
This girl was unpredictable. Dangerous. Violent.
“You’re not Yiwan. Who are you?”
