- Chapter 23 - I Can Stay by Your Side Forever
The next morning, when Luo Yunye awoke from her dreams, it felt like an entire century had passed. Her mind was still tangled in the memories of her time with A’wan. She lay there, groggy and unfocused, until the sound of Butler Lin’s voice came from outside the door:
“Madam, are you up? President Qin said you’re scheduled to report to the company today.”
Staring at the ceiling, Luo Yunye slowly pulled her drifting thoughts back to reality. She rubbed her temples and turned to get out of bed, only to see Qin Yiwan sleeping peacefully beside her. Unable to resist, she leaned down and gently kissed her on the forehead.
“Good morning, A’wan.”
To stop herself from slipping back into the dream, Luo Yunye quickly composed herself. She washed up in the bathroom, then selected a modest long dress from the walk-in closet and picked an unremarkable handbag before heading out. Since she was in a rush, she ate breakfast in the car.
Butler Lin dropped her off in front of the company building. At the reception desk, Luo Yunye walked up and said politely,
“Hi, my name is Luo Yunye. I’m the new intern in the R&D department.”
Most employees at the company were long-timers and usually clocked in right on time—no one came this early.
The receptionist was still eating breakfast when she heard the word “intern.” She didn’t pay much attention until she looked up and caught sight of Luo Yunye’s breathtaking beauty. She froze completely.
Swallowing her bun hastily, she wiped her mouth with a napkin and gave an awkward smile.
“Sorry, what was your name again?”
Luo Yunye smiled gently and repeated,
“My name is Luo Yunye. I’m the new intern in the R&D department.”
Upon hearing the name clearly, the receptionist instantly remembered that Director Du had given explicit instructions the day before: if someone named Luo Yunye showed up, she was to be kept at the front desk until further notice—no matter what, do not let her in.
Director Du’s tone had been less than friendly, and the receptionist, being sharp, had immediately understood that this Luo Yunye wasn’t someone Du Weimin liked. She had even planned to give Luo the cold shoulder today.
But she never expected Luo Yunye to be this stunning. That warm, radiant smile made her heart flutter uncontrollably.
Blushing, heartbeat racing, the receptionist stammered,
“Hi, I—I’m Wang Qian. You can call me Qian Qian~”
“Qian Qian, could you take me to the R&D department?”
“Ye—no—yes—wait…”
Instinctively, Wang Qian wanted to say yes, but then she remembered Director Du’s specific order not to let Luo Yunye in. She was instantly torn in two—half of her wanted to please this goddess, and the other half didn’t dare disobey.
Watching Wang Qian’s face shift through a whole range of expressions in mere seconds as if she were grappling with some major inner conflict, Luo Yunye chuckled softly.
“Qian Qian, are you feeling unwell? If it’s inconvenient, maybe you could just point me in the right direction and I’ll find my way.”
“It’s not that…”
Wang Qian was at a loss. As pretty as Luo Yunye was, work came first. Apologetically, she said,
“Most of HR and the R&D team aren’t in yet. How about you wait here on the sofa for a bit?”
Not wanting to make things harder for her, Luo Yunye nodded and sat down. Wang Qian brought her a cup of hot water with a smile.
“Just wait here a little. Once more people arrive, you can go up with them.”
“Thank you.”
Luo Yunye took out an unopened pack of biscuits from her bag and handed it to her.
“These are really good. Want to try some?”
“Thanks!”
Wang Qian accepted the snack with delight and returned to her desk, feeling like she was floating. Looking at the biscuits in her hand, she couldn’t stop smiling. Her excitement bubbled over, and she immediately pulled out her phone and typed into her college dorm group chat, [Fairy and Five Maniacs]:
“Guys! I just saw a literal fairy! A super gorgeous alpha, I swear, I’m having a heart attack—she’s that hot.”
“No pics, didn’t happen.”
Wang Qian sneakily snapped a photo of Luo Yunye and sent it.
“!!! Absolute fairy-tier! You really took a pic? Go get her number for us!”
“In your dreams!”
Wang Qian peeked over at Luo Yunye, who was elegantly checking her phone.
There’s no way any of her insane roommates were worthy of asking this fairy for her number. Even seeing the photo should be enough of a blessing for them.
At that moment, Luo Yunye was texting Gu Qian Yuee.
“Started my internship today.”
“Which company?”
She sent over a picture showing the company name.
“Oh, I know that one. A’wan’s mom runs it. Which department are you in? Want me to put in a good word?”
“No need, thank you, Qian Yuee. It’s just an internship—I might not stay long.”
“Alright. But if you ever want to join our company, you’re always welcome. Got plans after work? Want to grab dinner?”
Luo Yunye hesitated. She used to want nothing more than to be by Qin Yiwan’s side, to dive into the dream world and be with her A’wan. But their time together had been too short, and in reality, her interactions with Qin Yiwan always felt passive. Her mind was so tangled now that she couldn’t even tell dream from reality.
Maybe she needed to step back, breathe, and find her footing before facing them again.
After thinking for a few minutes, she agreed to have dinner with Gu Qian Yuee—and even invited her close friend Lin Yujia to join.
Gu Qian Yuee was all for it. “The more, the merrier!”
When Luo Yunye told Lin Yujia about the dinner, she readily agreed too.
As employees began trickling in, Luo Yunye looked up and noticed an alpha strutting in with style—dressed head to toe in designer brands, exuding an air of icy arrogance. She looked more like someone shopping at a luxury mall than reporting to work.
The woman approached the reception desk and handed her car keys to Wang Qian.
“Park my car.”
“Yes, Miss Du.”
Once “Miss Du” had walked off, Wang Qian made a face behind her back. When she saw Luo Yunye watching, she blushed furiously with embarrassment.
Luo Yunye offered a gentle smile and took a sip from her paper cup.
Wang Qian left to park the car. More people arrived upstairs, but none looked like they were from the R&D department. Luo Yunye ended up waiting for over an hour, until her phone rang—it was Grandma Qin checking in.
“Grandma,” Luo Yunye said with a hint of grievance, “I’ve been waiting downstairs for an hour. No one came to get me, and I can’t get upstairs.”
Upon hearing this, Grandma Qin immediately called Du Weimin.
“Yunye has been downstairs for over an hour, and no one’s helped her up. Is everyone at your company that busy? Too busy to even greet someone properly? ”
“Mom, please don’t be upset. I didn’t know she was already here—she didn’t call me. I’ll send someone down to bring her up right away, okay?”
“Don’t bother sending someone else. Go down and get her yourself. That way, your people won’t look down on her and treat her badly.”
After hanging up, Du Weimin was fuming. She swept the documents off her desk, then forced herself to calm down.
She called someone in to tidy up, straightened her outfit, and headed downstairs to meet Luo Yunye personally.
Luo Yunye had no idea what Grandma Qin said to Du Weimin, but she was surprised to see her show up in person. Not sure if she should say hello or act like she didn’t recognize her, she simply lowered her head and played with her phone.
Du Weimin was even more annoyed by her attitude but kept her smile as she approached.
“You should’ve called me when you arrived. I would’ve sent someone to bring you up.”
The receptionist, overhearing this, was full of question marks: Wait… wasn’t it you who said yesterday not to let her in? Now you’re switching sides?
Luo Yunye remained seated, looking up at Du Weimin with a calm smile.
“You’re so busy, Director Du. I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“If you didn’t want to disturb me, maybe you shouldn’t have called the old lady,” Du Weimin replied with a tight smile and a chill in her voice. “Let’s go upstairs.”
Luo Yunye didn’t bother explaining. Inside the elevator, neither of them spoke. The mirrored walls reflected both their figures.
When their eyes met, Luo Yunye’s gaze was calm and fearless. Du Weimin, on the other hand, couldn’t help but frown.
Du Weimin personally escorted her into the R&D department head’s office. Given her beauty and the fact that Du Weimin brought her in herself, Luo Yunye instantly became the center of attention in the open office.
Not wanting to expose their relationship, Du Weimin made it brief:
“She’s interning with your team. Assign someone to show her the ropes.”
And then she left.
The department head, a man in his forties, took one look at Luo Yunye’s face and, knowing she came via connections, assumed she was just here to coast through an internship. He wasn’t thrilled.
Still, he asked her name, then called in a colleague named Xiao Zhang to orient her.
Zhang Tingting, an alpha in her early thirties, admired Luo Yunye purely for her looks. She enthusiastically introduced the team and asked,
“You’re so pretty—why choose something as grueling as R&D?”
Luo Yunye had no clue why the original host picked this major, but for now, she wasn’t exactly thrilled about the workload. Still, she was here, so she’d play her part well.
“Probably for the sense of accomplishment—creating something new feels rewarding.”
Zhang Tingting showed her a soon-to-be-launched product: a robotic plush dog. It could scan faces and bark at strangers, respond to hand gestures, and play with its owner. It was designed for people who wanted companionship but couldn’t care for real pets.
The robot dog was built to be durable in case of a break-in, with no physical power button. Only a paired app could control it. That meant if a criminal entered the home, the dog would bark non-stop like an alarm.
Luo Yunye found the concept interesting.
“But… would customers really pay a premium for a barking alarm system?”
Zhang Tingting was momentarily stunned—an intern had just thrown her off balance.
Sensing this, Luo Yunye quickly added,
“Ting-jie, I think your design is great! But if we added a camera and some basic defense capabilities, the robot dog could double as a life companion. Imagine if a customer were attacked—it could run forward and defend them, even if just to knock the attacker off balance. That feeling of being protected could be deeply moving.”
“It might not fully stop an intruder, but it could delay them or create a distraction—just enough to give the owner hope. That emotional connection could really resonate.”
Zhang Tingting’s eyes lit up. She’d been so focused on technical specs that she missed the bigger picture.
“Yunye, that’s an amazing idea!”
She eagerly pulled Luo Yunye over to her desk to jot everything down and began working on a prototype.
While Zhang was busy, Luo Yunye wandered around the lab, checking out the models—until someone called out:
“Hey, new girl! Go get me a coffee.”
She heard it the first time but didn’t respond.
When the same voice, now more impatient, barked again, Luo Yunye got up—but instead of fetching coffee, she headed straight to the restroom.
When she returned empty-handed, the Alpha who had asked her to fetch coffee earlier walked up to her desk and held out a hand. “Where’s my coffee?”
Luo Yunye looked up and saw that it was the same Miss Du who had asked Wang Qian to park her car that morning. Her expression was a mix of amusement and disbelief. “How would I know? I don’t sell coffee.”
“I told you to get it for me earlier. Didn’t you hear me?”
Luo Yunye raised an eyebrow and tilted her head. “I heard you. Do you not have hands of your own? Why should someone else fetch it for you?”
Zhang Tingting hadn’t expected a mere intern like Luo Yunye to stand her ground like that. Knowing that Miss Du wasn’t someone to cross, she quickly stepped in to smooth things over. “Wendy, Yunye is new. She probably doesn’t know how things work around here yet. I’ll get your coffee.”
She was about to stand up, but Luo Yunye reached out and grabbed her arm, making the atmosphere instantly tense.
Du Wendy was visibly annoyed. She pointed at Luo Yunye, raising her brows in challenge. “No need. I want the new girl to do it.”
Seeing her smug and overbearing attitude, Luo Yunye smirked. “Keep dreaming.”
“You! Do you even know who I am?”
Du Wendy hadn’t expected such defiance and was seething with anger.
Luo Yunye gave her a quick once-over. “Do I need to?”
Sensing that the situation was going to escalate on its own and the office mood had taken a nosedive, Zhang Tingting quickly went to fetch two cups of coffee and handed one to each of them.
Both women had been brought in by Director Du, and neither was easy to deal with. Zhang Tingting felt like her head was going to split. She knew Du Wendy was notoriously arrogant, so she leaned over to advise Luo Yunye quietly. “Wendy’s got a temper. Don’t take it to heart. You both came in under Director Du, but she’s actually a relative of hers—so things are a bit different. Getting into conflict with her isn’t going to help you.”
So she was Du Weimin’s relative. No wonder she acted like she owned the place.
Luo Yunye gave a light laugh. “Don’t worry about me, Ting-jie. Worst case, I’ll just find another job.”
“You’re young. You’ve got options. Me, not so much. I’ve got aging parents, a kid to raise, and debts to pay. It’s tough.”
Her tone and expression sank with exhaustion.
Luo Yunye patted her on the shoulder. “You’re so capable, Ting-jie. Things will definitely get better for you.”
The first day at work was fairly easy. After hours, Qian Yue had already picked up Lin Yujia and was waiting downstairs. In front of curious onlookers, Luo Yunye climbed into a luxury car worth millions, instantly becoming the hot topic in the company’s internal chat groups.
“What do you want to eat?”
Gu Qian Yue glanced at Luo Yunye through the rearview mirror.
“Whatever you guys want. I’m good with anything.”
“Yujia wants grilled fish. I’m up for it too.”
“Then grilled fish it is.”
Lin Yujia, sitting in the front seat, turned to look at her. “How was your first day?”
“Not bad. Just ran into one weirdo and had a bit of a back-and-forth.”
“You’re really something.” Lin Yujia couldn’t help but laugh. “First day and already butting heads with a coworker? What were you thinking?”
Gu Qian Yue watched her through the mirror, hearing her casually respond, “What’s that saying again? ‘Take life and death lightly, and if someone crosses you—fight.’”
Her words had both of them laughing.
“I think Yunye has such a way with words,” Gu Qian Yue said, still chuckling.
Luo Yunye nodded, playing along. “Funny, I was just thinking the same.”
More laughter followed.
As they drove on, Luo Yunye turned her gaze to the golden rays of the setting sun weaving through the tall city buildings. The light flickered in and out of view, giving her a surreal sense that she was moving between dream and reality.
She suddenly missed A’wan deeply. She wondered if in the world where A’wan was, the sunset was just as brilliant—and whether A’wan missed her too.
The three of them had dinner and shared funny college stories, laughing and chatting the whole way through.
Afterward, Gu Qian Yue offered to drive them home. Luo Yunye said she’d had a drink and wanted to walk off the buzz, asking her to take Lin Yujia home instead.
Gu Qian Yue had a nagging feeling Luo Yunye wasn’t quite herself today, but she didn’t push it. As they drove, she asked Lin Yujia in the passenger seat, “Does Yunye have a girlfriend? ”
“Don’t think so,” Lin Yujia replied, puzzled. “If she did, she would’ve introduced her to me.”
Gu Qian Yue gave a slight smile. “She seemed a bit down today. I thought maybe she had a fight with her girlfriend or something.”
“No, nothing like that,” Lin Yujia replied, though she too had noticed something was off and couldn’t help texting Luo Yunye. “Are you in a bad mood today?”
Luo Yunye, at that moment, was standing in front of a cake shop in a mall, staring at the same type of cake A’wan had once fed her.
She bought a slice, sat down just outside the shop, and sent a photo to Lin Yujia with a message: “I’m good now.”
The picture surprised Lin Yujia. She remembered that Luo Yunye didn’t even like sweets, let alone go out of her way to buy cake after dinner. That confirmed it—something was definitely up.
“If you’re feeling down, you can talk to me. I’m here for you.”
Reading the sweet message, Luo Yunye couldn’t help but smile. “Thanks, dear. That alone already makes me feel better.”
She wandered around the mall by herself, bought a few outfits she liked, and by the time she got home, it was already 10 p.m. She opened the door quietly. The monitor’s waveforms were still moving—Qin Yiwan wasn’t asleep yet.
After freshening up, Luo Yunye walked to the bedside and gently took her hand. “Were you waiting for me? I started my internship at Mama Du’s company today. Had dinner with some friends after work, so I got home a bit late.”
******
Qin Yiwan hadn’t really meant to wait for her. It was just that no one had spoken to her all day, and for the first time in a long while, she felt truly alone. Something she had gotten used to suddenly felt unbearable.
She hated feeling like this. The desire to wake up grew stronger and stronger, to the point where she couldn’t fall asleep.
Finally, when Luo Yunye returned and gently held her hand, explaining everything softly, Qin Yiwan felt a calm she hadn’t known she needed.
Hearing that Luo Yunye had started her internship—and knowing she wouldn’t be around as often—left her with a growing sense of loneliness. The longing to wake up surged to its peak.
That night, Luo Yunye held her hand as she slept—but she didn’t enter her dreams.
When she woke in the middle of the night, the monitor still showed signs of wakefulness.
Luo Yunye leaned close, resting her cheek gently against Qin Yiwan’s shoulder. “Jiejie… do you really want to wake up?”
The monitor’s lines fluctuated more noticeably. She had guessed right.
“Don’t rush. Tomorrow I’ll go talk to Xu Nuo. Have her check your body—maybe she’ll find a way to help you wake up.”
Qin Yiwan was mentally exhausted, yet unable to sleep. She listened to Luo Yunye’s voice by her ear, drifting from stories of childhood to the present and beyond. Gradually, she could no longer make out the words or remember what was said.
Luo Yunye watched the monitor lines slowly even out, knowing Qin Yiwan had finally fallen asleep. She held her hand, not knowing when she herself dozed off.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself once again in the Chinese restaurant where she had first seen Qin Yiwan in her dream.
Qin Yiwan was sitting in a booth, wearing a pink strapless dress and her long hair loose. She looked different today.
For a moment, Luo Yunye thought it was A’wan and rushed forward, pulling her into an embrace. “A’wan…”
Qin Yiwan was startled. But then she heard the familiar voice and smelled the familiar scent, and her racing heart began to calm.
She lightly patted Luo Yunye’s arm. “Sit. I asked you here today because I have something to say.”
Hearing her cool, detached tone snapped Luo Yunye out of her daze. Right—this wasn’t A’wan. This was Qin Yiwan.
Her heart wavered for a second, but she quickly pulled herself together and obediently took a seat. “Jiejie, what did you want to say?”
Qin Yiwan looked her up and down, confused by how she sometimes called her “A’wan” and other times “Jiejie,” but she didn’t press it. Instead, she lifted the teacup and took a small sip.
The waiter brought their dishes and placed them between them. Qin Yiwan spoke up, “I didn’t know what you liked, so I just ordered randomly.”
Luo Yunye picked up her chopsticks and smiled. “I like anything spicy. Sweet and sour is good too. Just no mushrooms—I’m allergic. Everything else is fair game.”
“Why mushrooms?”
“Allergic,” Luo Yunye replied, smiling at her. “What about you, Jiejie? Anything you’re allergic to?”
“Mangoes.”
Luo Yunye nodded. “I’ll remember that.”
“No need to remember,” Qin Yiwan hesitated, then said, “I called you here to say goodbye. I don’t want you showing up in my dreams anymore. I have more important things to do, and I don’t want to waste time on anything else.”
These weren’t words she said for Luo Yunye’s sake. They were a reminder to herself—not to get lost in dreams. After all, this person was just a figment. She had to keep living—had to wake up.
This meeting was her way of saying farewell to this unreal experience.
“I can go with you, wherever you need to go,” Luo Yunye said as she placed food on Qin Yiwan’s plate. “I don’t mind wasting time.”
Qin Yiwan looked at her, reluctant to let go. No one had ever chosen her so firmly before.
After a moment of hesitation, she still made up her mind. “But you can’t stay by my side forever. I don’t need a companion that isn’t real.”
“I can stay with you forever,” Luo Yunye said, gently cupping her face. “Whether it’s in dreams… or in reality.”
Qin Yiwan didn’t believe it. How could a stranger—a wife she’d never even met—possibly be the same as this Luo Yunye in front of her?
