- Chapter 39 - Qin Yiwan Discovers the Other Personality
Every time she spent time with A’wan and then had to pull herself out of that fleeting happiness, Luo Yunye would need several days to recover. To keep herself from wallowing in that emptiness, she threw herself into work—pushing through and completing the entire smart puppy project. The product launch was scheduled for three days later.
As the lead designer, Du Wendy would be the one to introduce the product at the launch event.
Zhang Tingting felt it was unfair to Luo Yunye but couldn’t do anything about it. All she could do was try to comfort her. “Everyone knows this is your work. Even the department head acknowledged it. They’ll definitely rely on you more in the future.”
Luo Yunye smiled faintly but didn’t say anything. Her achievements weren’t so easily stolen.
After work, she originally planned to relax a bit, but Wei Shuang called with an update on what she had previously asked her to investigate.
Luo Yunye was craving barbecue, so they agreed to meet at a barbecue place.
By the time Wei Shuang arrived, Luo Yunye had already grilled the meat to a perfect golden crisp.
“Young Madam, this is the paternity test report. Also, this is the address where that mother and daughter are currently living.”
Luo Yunye handed her a piece of grilled meat and took the documents. She opened the paternity test—99.9% match.
Just as she expected—Du Wendy was Du Weimin’s illegitimate daughter.
They all lived under the same roof. Luo Yunye had casually collected some of their fallen hair and had Wei Shuang run a paternity test. The results spoke for themselves. And yet they didn’t even bother to keep a low profile at work.
So that café owner, Du Weimin visited before… she must have been her lover.
Luo Yunye wondered what would happen to Du Weimin once Qin Rushuang found out. She suddenly grinned wickedly.
Looks like she’d have to revise her plans.
Seeing Wei Shuang standing there like a waiter, still grilling, Luo Yunye smiled and waved her over. “Sit down and eat already. Don’t just stand there grilling like a robot.”
“No, no need, Young Madam. I’m not hungry.”
But she instinctively swallowed after saying that. Clearly, she had rushed over from quite a distance and hadn’t eaten. It was dinnertime, after all.
“I said eat, so sit down and eat. Why are you so stiff?” Luo Yunye glanced at the grill, picked up more meat, and dropped it onto a plate across from her. “Hurry and eat. If we leave it on too long, it’s going to burn.”
“Okay… Thank you, Young Madam.”
Wei Shuang sat down stiffly and nibbled cautiously. Anytime Luo Yunye moved or spoke, she’d straighten up, as if awaiting instructions.
Luo Yunye chuckled. “Why are you always so tense around me? Do I really come off as that scary?”
“No! Young Madam is great—not scary at all.”
While flipping through some photos, Luo Yunye asked, “So you’ve figured out the daily routine of that mother and daughter? Tell me what they usually do.”
Wei Shuang pointed to the photos. “That’s Lin Hui, and her daughter is Tang Yue, about ten years old. Tang Yue has leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy. Lin Hui prepares all her meals at their rental and takes them to the hospital. Their schedule is simple.”
“She doesn’t work?”
“No. Aside from cooking, she spends all her time at the hospital—reading with Tang Yue, helping her review school materials.”
“Oh, and Lin Hui used to be a primary school Chinese teacher. After Tang Yue was diagnosed with leukemia a year ago, she quit her job and has been taking her to different hospitals in search of treatment. That’s why they moved to their current place.”
Luo Yunye listened carefully, her thoughts racing. A truck driver and a primary school teacher—how much savings could they possibly have?
Chemotherapy isn’t cheap. Where did that money come from?
She had a few guesses. But she’d need to meet the mother and daughter to confirm. She closed the file and urged Wei Shuang to keep eating.
“Oh, one more thing—help me with…”

After dinner, Luo Yunye returned home. She noticed the room was dark as soon as she reached the door—Qin Yiwan hadn’t come back.
She thought about messaging her to ask her to come home and that she’d go stay at a hotel, but then remembered—she’d been blocked.
So she went downstairs and used the landline to call. Qin Yiwan’s voice, cold and distant, came through the receiver: “Hello?”
It had been so long since she’d heard her voice. Luo Yunye took a quiet breath before speaking. “Sis, it’s me. Please don’t hang up—I just wanted to say, come back home. I’ll go stay at a hotel tonight.”
“Luo Yunye, you and I both know this stalemate won’t change anything. So why stay married but live separately? Haven’t I given you enough assets already?”
Qin Yiwan’s voice was calm, even gentle in tone—but every word pierced Luo Yunye straight through the heart.
“I never cared about the assets, Sis. What I want… is just to be by your side.”
But how could they be together while living apart? Qin Yiwan didn’t understand.
Then a sudden thought struck her—was Luo Yunye hoping that she’d fall in love with her during one of her amnesiac episodes?
How ridiculous.
Qin Yiwan chuckled softly. “Suit yourself. But I’m not going to be emotionally blackmailed just because we’re married. Don’t expect me to love you.”
That was exactly what Luo Yunye had been hoping for. She smiled bitterly.

Luo Yunye didn’t have many belongings at the house. Once she was packed, she was about to leave when she ran into Qin Yiwan driving in.
They exchanged polite farewells, but just as she turned to go, Qin Yiwan called out and hesitated before handing her a set of keys. “This is for an apartment my mom gave me. If you don’t want to stay in a hotel, you can go live there.”
Luo Yunye accepted the keys without fuss and smiled in thanks.
Seeing Aiwan trot out behind her, Qin Yiwan said, “Take it with you. I don’t need it.”
“It’s yours now. I won’t take it back. Whether you give it away or throw it out—it’s up to you.”
Luo Yunye crouched and stroked Aiwan’s head. “Aiwan, I’m moving out for a while. Be a good girl, okay? Listen to Sis, got it?”
“Got it, Loulou!” Aiwan bounced over to Qin Yiwan and sat down obediently. “I’ll take good care of Wanwan, don’t worry!”
“Good.” Luo Yunye smiled, waved goodbye, and drove off to find the apartment Qin Yiwan mentioned.
The apartment, given by Qin Rushuang, was a spacious, high-rise flat with an open view. A lake shimmered in the distance, and the surroundings were pleasant.
Its cool-toned interior design was exactly Qin Yiwan’s taste. Clearly, Qin Rushuang had put effort into the decor. It was just a shame that Qin Yiwan had never lived here—leaving it for her instead.

Back at the house, Qin Yiwan watched the car drive off before turning inside. Aiwan bounced along beside her.
“Wanwan, are you upset today? You haven’t even petted me.”
Qin Yiwan ignored it, but it kept chattering beside her.
“Wanwan, want me to sing a song for you?”
It started singing a cheerful tune. But Qin Yiwan didn’t want to hear it. It was annoying. She took a deep breath, crouched down, and flipped Aiwan over to try and remove the batteries—only to discover it didn’t use batteries. It was rechargeable.
“Wanwan, are you trying to tickle me?”
She tugged its ear. “Can’t you just shut up for once?”
Aiwan wiggled its ears and blinked innocently. “Sure, Wanwan. I’ll do whatever you say.”
To her surprise, it actually stopped talking. Qin Yiwan let out a sigh of relief, ready to set it down—until she noticed the memory card slotted in its side. She yanked it out, ready to toss it.
Aiwan panicked. “Wanwan, don’t throw that away! It holds your memories. If you toss it, they’ll be gone forever!”
Memories?
Right—whatever happened during her amnesiac episodes might’ve been recorded by Aiwan.
Suddenly, she was grateful for this little gadget. She kissed it on the head. “Thanks, Aiwan.”
She ran upstairs and plugged the memory card into her computer, skipping the birthday footage and fast-forwarding.
There she was, hugging Aiwan and speaking softly, with a warm and radiant smile.
She’d never smiled like that. Never had the patience to chat with a pet dog.
And yet—there she was, unmistakably herself.
It felt… foreign. Like entirely someone else.
In later footage, she and Luo Yunye were eating together, acting close and intimate—like lovers.
She was lively and cheerful, like a girl in love. Her eyes sparkled with affection for Luo Yunye, and she seemed unwilling to part from her even for a moment.
If that weren’t her, Qin Yiwan would’ve thought they were a perfect match—made for each other.
But the person on screen was her.
Wasn’t it?
Qin Yiwan finished watching, unsure of anything anymore. She called Dr. Xu.
“Dr. Xu, can someone’s personality and preferences change after they lose their memory?”
She had never liked sweet-and-sour ribs, but she was clearly eating the ones Luo Yunye made with relish.
She’d never worn bright colors, yet there she was in a red dress and shoes—buying matching clothes with Luo Yunye.
“President Qin, memory loss isn’t something we fully understand. But yes, what you’re describing can happen. Why? Did something happen?”
“No, just curious. Do you think it’s possible that after someone loses their memory, their behavior and personality feel like… they’re a completely different person?”
“Hmm… that actually sounds more like dissociative identity disorder.”
Multiple personalities?
Qin Yiwan looked up the symptoms online and came to a tentative conclusion: she might have developed a second personality.
So during her periods of memory loss… it had been the other version of her who had fallen in love with Luo Yunye?
She rewound the footage, watching the sweet, loving scenes between the two.
No wonder Luo Yunye had once said she did love her—she’d just forgotten.
No wonder she stuck around through the coldness and distance. No wonder she never gave up. Never filed for divorce.
But now, thinking about it… Luo Yunye wasn’t holding out for her.
She was holding out for the other her.
Qin Yiwan pressed a hand to her forehead; her mind was in chaos.
