- Chapter 53 - I Will Never Be With You in This Lifetime
By the time the rescue team arrived, Luo Yunye had already passed out from the pain. Qin Yiwan held her tightly in her arms, sitting in the snow, eyes brimming with tears of anxiety and heartbreak.
“Please! Please help her—save her!”
The rescue team consisted of all betas, completely unaffected by Luo Yunye’s pheromones. Upon learning that she had fainted due to the pain from her susceptibility period, the medical staff traveling with them immediately administered a suppressant injection.
Both women were carried down the mountain on stretchers. Gu Qianyue ran over the moment she saw the team returning. When she saw Luo Yunye lying unconscious with her eyes closed, her legs buckled.
“Yunye? Yunye, what happened to you? Don’t scare me like this!”
Luo Yunyi rushed to Qin Yiwan’s side, worried sick.
“Wanwan, are you okay? Did you get hurt anywhere?”
Qin Yiwan shook her head slightly, looking like she didn’t want to talk much.
Gu Qianyue saw that Qin Yiwan was awake and hurried to her.
“Wanwan, are you okay? What about Yunye? What happened to her?”
Qin Yiwan’s face was pale, her voice strained from holding back discomfort.
“I’m in a bit of pain, but it’s nothing serious. Miss Luo entered her susceptibility period, and we didn’t have any suppressants at the base of the mountain. She fought against her instincts and ended up passing out from the pain.”
When an alpha enters their susceptibility period without suppressants—or an omega to help—it’s like being set on fire from within. The searing pain across their body can drive most alphas to lose control and act on instinct toward any nearby omega.
But it was just the two of them down there. If Luo Yunye had wanted to do anything to Qin Yiwan, she wouldn’t have been able to escape.
And yet, Luo Yunye chose pain over harming her.
To Gu Qianyue, that alone proved that Luo Yunye had surpassed most alphas. It made her ache with love—and pride.
Luo Yunye was taken to the nearest hospital for a full body examination.
When the doctor came out with the chart, he asked, “Who here is the patient’s family?”
Gu Qianyue stepped forward.
“I… I’m her girlfriend.”
The doctor hesitated for a second, then decided to speak honestly, considering how this might affect their relationship.
“Because the patient didn’t receive a suppressant in time, she released a large amount of pheromones, which caused physical strain. We suspect she has developed a pheromone allergy to omegas and recommend monitoring her in the hospital for a few more days.”
Gu Qianyue had heard of this condition before. Back in school, there was an omega classmate who was allergic to alpha pheromones. Even the slightest contact would cause painful, itchy red rashes that made them want to claw their skin off. During their heat, they had no choice but to isolate themselves.
She wondered—would Luo Yunye be allergic to her pheromones too?
She sat beside the sleeping Luo Yunye and reached out, touching the gland at the back of her neck. Letting a trace of her pheromone rub off onto her fingers, she gently applied it to the back of Luo Yunye’s hand.
Cradling Luo Yunye’s hand, she stared intently at her skin. Five minutes passed. Nothing.
Just as she began to hope—just as she started to think maybe Luo Yunye wasn’t allergic to her—a red dot bloomed on the fair skin of Luo Yunye’s hand. Then another. Then it swelled, turning into raised welts.
Gu Qianyue’s heart plummeted. She quickly grabbed a towel and wiped her pheromones off Luo Yunye’s skin.
She went to consult the doctor again.
The doctor advised that she keep her distance during Luo Yunye’s susceptibility period, to avoid accidentally triggering another allergic reaction through unintended pheromone exposure.
“Is there any way to treat a pheromone allergy?”
If Luo Yunye remained allergic, then physical intimacy between them would be impossible.
“In domestic cases we’ve seen,” the doctor said gently, knowing they were in a relationship, “the only effective method is to find an omega with highly compatible pheromones. Through gradual exposure and soothing, desensitization can occur—but the process inevitably involves physical intimacy.”
Gu Qianyue understood exactly what he meant.
Only an omega with highly matched pheromones could help Luo Yunye.
And Luo Yunye was allergic to hers.
They… weren’t compatible.
Gu Qianyue had mentally prepared for a lot of things—that Luo Yunye might not like her right away, that their relationship might face family opposition.
But she never imagined that the one thing standing between them would be Luo Yunye’s physical reaction to her pheromones.
She was confident she could overcome anything else—she was even ready to fight her family for this. But this? She couldn’t change this.
When Lin Yujia heard Luo Yunye had been hospitalized, she rushed over immediately.
Seeing Gu Qianyue sitting in the hallway with her face buried in her hands, visibly distressed, she panicked and ran over, kneeling in front of her.
“Senior, what happened? Is Yunye okay?”
Gu Qianyue lifted her head. The disappointment and helplessness that had been building inside suddenly had an outlet.
“She didn’t get her suppressant in time during susceptibility. Her body’s completely exhausted—she’s still asleep. The doctor said she’ll probably wake up later.”
“And there’s more,” her voice cracked, eyes red, “The doctor said her delay in getting the suppressant damaged her body and made her allergic to omega pheromones. I tested it—she’s allergic to mine too.”
Gu Qianyue dropped her head again, burying her face in her hands.
She didn’t want to cry, but the thought that she couldn’t stay with Luo Yunye was unbearable. She liked her so much. They were so close to being together…
Lin Yujia saw how devastated she was and hesitated for a moment before gently patting her back.
“Medical science is so advanced now. Who knows? Maybe it’s just temporary. Maybe Yunye will recover.”
“The doctor said the only solution is to find an omega with highly compatible pheromones to help her desensitize—” Gu Qianyue wiped her tears, “—and the process involves physical intimacy. Hugging, kissing, even temporary marking…”
Her voice broke again at the end.
She couldn’t bear to watch Luo Yunye being physically close with someone else—even if it was for treatment. And she didn’t want Luo Yunye to suffer just to stay by her side.
Which meant… when the month they’d promised each other was over, they would break up.
******
Luo Yunye suddenly woke up in the middle of the night. Just shifting a little made her entire body ache like it was being pricked by a thousand needles.
She turned her head and saw someone sitting beside her bed. She thought it was Gu Qianyue at first—but when she saw clearly that it was Lin Yujia, she gently nudged her arm.
“Yujia… Yujia, wake up?”
Lin Yujia stirred and raised her head groggily. When she saw Luo Yunye awake, she turned on the light and rubbed her eyes.
“You’re awake! Are you okay? Does anything hurt? Should I call the doctor?”
Luo Yunye shook her head.
“I’m okay for now. Why are you here?”
Lin Yujia got up to pour her a glass of warm water and handed it over. She poured another for herself, took a sip, then sighed.
“Senior wanted to stay, but the doctor said you’re allergic to omega pheromones because of the suppressant delay. You’re even allergic to Qianyue’s pheromones. She couldn’t be here. But I couldn’t just leave you alone in a hospital, could I? So I stayed.”
“…Thanks.”
Luo Yunye took the cup and sipped the water. Her parched body finally felt a bit better.
Seeing that Luo Yunye had no reaction to hearing about the pheromone allergy, Lin Yujia frowned.
“Do you even realize how serious this is?”
Luo Yunye was unfazed.
“It’s not like I’m going to die. Just some discomfort.”
If she could get through the pain of susceptibility, she could handle an allergy.
“That’s only part of it.” Lin Yujia was more worried than she was. “Do you get what it means that you’re allergic to senior’s pheromones? It means no physical intimacy. You two… you know, you can’t.”
Seeing Lin Yujia flustered and red-faced, Luo Yunye nodded seriously.
“Yeah. That’s a problem.”
She personally didn’t mind. Worst case, she could just hide at home during susceptibility. She had more than enough money to get by.
But for Gu Qianyue, this would be a big blow. She genuinely wanted to be with her.
The next day, Gu Qianyue arrived with a bag of fruit and a bright smile. But at the door, she hesitated.
“Can I come in?”
“Of course.” Luo Yunye smiled.
Hearing her say that, Gu Qianyue finally relaxed and walked over to set the fruit basket down. “How are you feeling now?”
“Still a little sore, but the doctor said I just need a couple more days of rest.”
“As long as you’re okay,” Gu Qianyue sighed with relief. “What kind of fruit would you like?”
“An orange, maybe. I can peel it myself.”
“I’ll do it.” Gu Qianyue picked up an orange and started peeling. Noticing that Lin Yujia wasn’t around, she casually asked, “Where’s Yujia?”
“I told her to go home and get some sleep. She stayed with me all night and barely rested. I can take care of myself.”
Gu Qianyue didn’t say anything right away. She looked thoughtful as she peeled the orange and handed it to Luo Yunye. Her gaze turned sorrowful. “Did Yujia tell you… about your condition?”
“She did,” Luo Yunye took the orange but didn’t eat it. Seeing Gu Qianyu looking so downcast, she offered gently, “I didn’t expect things to turn out like this. I’m sorry. It looks like… I won’t be able to stay by your side anymore.”
“It’s not your fault. No one wanted this.”
Gu Qianyue’s eyes turned red. Just thinking about breaking up with Luo Yunye made her tear up. She put a wedge of orange in her mouth, bit down—and the tears spilled out.
Luo Yunye reached for a tissue and gently wiped her tears. “Even if we can’t be together anymore, the time we shared… was beautiful, wasn’t it? Qianyue, don’t cry. You’ll meet someone even better than me.”
“Where would I ever find someone better than you?”
Gu Qianyue couldn’t hold back anymore. She threw her arms around her and sobbed, her shoulders trembling.
Luo Yunye patted her back gently, trying to soothe her. “You’ve only seen the best parts of me. I’m not as great as you think I am.
There will be someone better out there—someone who can give you their whole heart, completely and without hesitation.”
Gu Qianyue knew she had been heartbroken before, and probably still hadn’t fully let go of that ex. Even though they couldn’t stay together, she still wanted Luo Yunye to be happy.
“You need to take care of yourself, too. Move forward. Don’t get stuck in the past. Find an omega whose pheromones are a strong match with yours and live a good life.”
Gu Qianyue let go of her. The two looked at each other—Gu Qianyue’s eyes still glistening with tears, but she managed a smile. Luo Yunye also smiled softly and reached up to wipe away the remaining tears. “You deserve happiness too.”
There were still a few days left in their one-month agreement, but Gu Qianyue had insisted that breaking up during the Lunar New Year would be bad luck. So they agreed to wait until after the holiday to make the breakup official.
Just then, Gu Qianyue noticed a patch of redness forming on Luo Yunye’s neck and asked with concern, “Yunye, are you having another allergic reaction?”
“Seems like it,” Luo Yunye smiled. When Gu Qianyue had hugged her earlier, she’d been exposed to her pheromones. Now the skin on her neck was starting to itch and turn red. She could barely resist the urge to scratch.
“Don’t scratch it. If you start, you won’t be able to stop, and it’ll get worse. I’ll go get the doctor—just hang on.”
Gu Qianyue rushed out to call a doctor. Luo Yunye rolled up her sleeve and saw that red welts were already spreading along her arm. She could tolerate pain, but this itchiness—this burning irritation—was nearly unbearable.
When she looked up, she saw Qin Yiwan standing in the doorway. Annoyed, she raised her hand. “Don’t come in. Stay away from me!”
Qin Yiwan froze at the threshold, not daring to move. She watched as Gu Qianyue came rushing back with the doctor. Yiwan remained outside and asked softly, “What happened to Miss Luo?”
Gu Qianyue explained the situation—how Luo Yunye was allergic to omega pheromones. Qin Yiwan thought back to when they had been together at the foot of the mountain. She had hugged her for a long time… and aside from some discomfort due to her own heat cycle, Luo Yunye hadn’t broken out at all.
Could it be that… Luo Yunye wasn’t allergic to her pheromones?
The doctor examined her symptoms and shook his head helplessly. “If we could find an omega with highly compatible pheromones to soothe her right now, that would be best. Otherwise, she’ll just have to endure it until the allergic reaction subsides.”
Clearly, Gu Qianyue couldn’t stay in the room any longer—it would only make Luo Yunye’s condition worse.
After saying goodbye, she walked Qin Yiwan back to her own hospital room. “Wanwan, how are you feeling?”
“The doctor did a full check. Nothing serious—just some surface injuries.”
Qin Yiwan looked guilty. “If Miss Luo hadn’t come down the mountain to save me, she wouldn’t be like this now. It’s my fault.”
“No one’s to blame. It was an accident. Don’t beat yourself up.”
“But… what about the two of you, moving forward?”
Gu Qianyue forced a soft smile. “We had already agreed to try dating for a month. After something like this, of course we can’t stay together. After the New Year, I’ll announce the breakup.”
She sighed with regret. Qin Yiwan hugged her gently—guilt still gnawing at her heart, but another part of her… felt relief.
“Qianyue, you’re such a good person. You’ll definitely find someone who loves you with their whole heart.”
Gu Qianyue smiled, “Why do you sound exactly like Luo Yunye? Wanwan, you need to find someone who truly loves you too. That Luo Yunyi is no good. The day you fell down the mountain, all she did was stand there yelling—completely useless.”
Just then, Luo Yunyi walked in. Gu Qianyue clearly didn’t want to be in the same room with her. She leaned over and whispered to Yiwan, “Seriously, she’s not it. Don’t let her fool you.”
Luo Yunyi gave a polite smile and greeted them as she entered. Gu Qianyue ignored her entirely and left. Luo Yunyi didn’t take it personally and walked over to Qin Yiwan, carrying a food container. “Wanwan, I brought you something tasty. Want to see what you’d like first?”
She started unpacking the food, but Qin Yiwan stopped her with a hand on her arm. “Yunyi, I’m not really hungry. I’m still feeling tired… I want to rest. You should go.”
Luo Yunyi’s smile stiffened slightly, but she managed to nod. “Alright, get some rest.”
She packed the food back up. “I’ll just leave it here. If you get hungry, help yourself. Or call me, and I’ll bring something fresh. I… I’ll head out now.”
Once Luo Yunyi left, Qin Yiwan couldn’t help herself—she went back to Luo Yunye’s hospital room. Seeing the door open, she stepped inside and quietly locked it behind her.
Luo Yunye had only just begun recovering from the allergic reaction. Seeing another omega walk in, she immediately sprang up and grabbed an apple off the nightstand like a weapon. “Don’t come any closer! One more step and I’ll throw this!”
“I just want to see if you’re actually allergic to me,” Qin Yiwan stood her ground. “Back when you passed out in the snow, I held you for a long time—and you didn’t react at all.”
As she spoke, she began to slowly release her pheromones. By the time Luo Yunye noticed, it was too late to dodge.
But the discomfort she’d been expecting… didn’t come. In fact, the itching and redness seemed to ease under the influence of Qin Yiwan’s scent.
Luo Yunye relaxed a little but turned her face away. “So what if I’m not allergic to you? That doesn’t mean I want to be with you.
Qin Yiwan, I will never be with you. Not in this life.”
“Being with me is worse than an allergic reaction?”
“Yes.” Luo Yunye didn’t hesitate—she was always ready with words that cut deep. “More than the rash, I don’t want to be anywhere near you. Get out. I need to rest.”
Qin Yiwan had grown up swallowing harsh words like they were medicine. Her mother had said even worse, more painful things. She was used to it.
“Okay,” she said quietly. “I’ll come check on you later.”
