- Chapter 3 - Qiao Jinyan is So Good to Her Assistant
At four in the morning, Luo Nianshu was once again woken up by the shrill ringing of her phone.
Please have mercy on me… she groaned internally as she fumbled for the phone in her groggy state.
“I want noodles…” came Qiao Jinyan’s pitiful voice over the line.
“I’m really hungry this time. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother you this late.”
In her heart, Luo Nianshu thought: I don’t believe you.
She hung up silently. Wearing slippers, she shuffled into the kitchen, put a pot of water on to boil, and rolled up her sleeves to wash some vegetables.
She carefully peeled apart each leafy stalk, rinsing the soil off with precision before draining the water and placing them neatly into a bamboo basket. Just as she turned to start cooking the noodles, she froze—Qiao Jinyan was standing behind her without a sound.
Qiao Jinyan stood with her arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe, silently observing Luo Nianshu. No one knew how long she had been watching.
She wore an ivory silk slip nightdress that clung perfectly to her curves. The moonlight filtered through the trees outside, casting soft shadows on her face, making her glow like a divine sculpture. She stood there, a perfect embodiment of a muse.
Stunned by her beauty, Luo Nianshu stood dumbfounded. The kettle whistled as the water boiled, snapping her out of her daze, and she hurriedly turned back to the stove.
“Were you mesmerized?” Qiao Jinyan smirked, clearly amused by the reaction. She ran her fingers through her jet-black hair casually.
“No.” Luo Nianshu looked down, refusing to meet her eyes, continuing to cook as if her life depended on it.
Qiao Jinyan leaned closer, observing Luo Nianshu cook, amused to find that the usually thick-skinned assistant could actually blush.
Looking closely, Luo Nianshu was quite an attractive woman. Her long hair was soft and voluminous, like a mischievous forest sprite. She had a high, elegant nose bridge, and a round, adorable nose tip. But her most captivating feature was her pair of teasing, flirtatious peach blossom eyes that could drive people wild.
“You smell nice,” Qiao Jinyan said suddenly, leaning closer to sniff. “What body wash do you use?”
“I have a natural fragrance,” Luo Nianshu replied shamelessly, smiling.
Qiao Jinyan paused, then wrinkled her nose and gave a disdainful look. “Don’t flatter yourself.” She turned around and leaned against the door again, resuming her supervisory position.
Luo Nianshu stirred the noodles in the pot, then chopped up some mushrooms and chicken pieces, tossing them in expertly.
“Why did you come all the way just to watch me cook?”
It was just a casual question, but Qiao Jinyan’s expression changed abruptly: “Who said I came here just to watch you cook?!”
Her sudden volume startled them both. Then, trying to cover it up, Qiao Jinyan added awkwardly, “I just wanted to make sure you didn’t poison me.”
“Well, you can relax. I don’t do things that hurt others,” Luo Nianshu replied calmly even though sometimes Qiao Jinyan drove her mad enough to consider poisoning her.
“But you did ruin my wedding.” Qiao Jinyan huffed in frustration.
“I ruined your wedding, embarrassed you in front of the entire internet. That was my fault, and I apologize. But before that, I never hurt anyone.”
Luo Nianshu’s tone grew serious.
“Besides, did you really want to marry Wang Xu?”
Qiao Jinyan frowned and turned her face away. “Why are you asking that?”
Truthfully, she and Wang Xu had no emotional connection. Their public displays of affection were entirely fabricated. The wedding was more of a family obligation than a personal choice. They had known each other for barely a month and had hardly spent any time together due to work.
So when the wedding was “crashed,” she wasn’t heartbroken just deeply humiliated to be abandoned in front of a national audience.
After hearing her reply, Luo Nianshu pursed her lips and said no more. She silently stirred the noodles, then served them into a delicate porcelain bowl along with the broth but didn’t hand it over.
“Are you going to eat or not?” she asked knowingly.
Qiao Jinyan replied dryly, “No.”
Luo Nianshu: I knew it.
At the Beauty Salon
Qiao Jinyan reclined on a massage chair, flipping through a magazine as a young beautician carefully applied skincare products to her flawless face.
“Wow, your skin is amazing! It’s like porcelain you’re the best-maintained celebrity I’ve ever seen,” the beautician gushed.
“Really?” Qiao Jinyan smirked with quiet satisfaction.
She tilted her head, stretching her graceful swan neck, eyes sparkling like stardust as she looked at the girl. “It must be because your salon is so good.”
The girl blushed and waved her hands quickly. “It’s all because you’re naturally beautiful!”
Qiao Jinyan lowered her head modestly, acting all shy like a bashful young lady. Even the female beautician felt her heart skip a beat.
“Could you sign an autograph for me later?” the girl asked excitedly.
Qiao Jinyan blinked and smiled sweetly. “Of course.”
“Ahhh, I’m so happy!” the beautician squealed.
She’s the kindest and most approachable celebrity I’ve ever met!
But… who was that woman sitting next to her?
The beautician glanced at the dozing woman beside her half asleep, lazily fanning Qiao Jinyan.
This woman had entered the salon with Qiao Jinyan and was now fanning her by hand. Apparently, the AC was supposed to be on, but Qiao Jinyan had said she wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t handle air conditioning, so this woman had to do it manually.
She seemed to be her assistant. What was her name again… Three Million? What a strange name.
Luo Nianshu, aka “Three Million,” was dozing in the chair, her head bobbing like a chicken pecking rice. Her eyelids were battling to stay open.
She hadn’t had a full night’s sleep in days due to Qiao Jinyan’s relentless late-night calls and demands.
Yawning widely behind her hand, she continued fanning.
Qiao Jinyan peeked at the drowsy assistant and cleared her throat. “Assistant Three Million.”
“Mm… huh?” Luo Nianshu jerked awake, blinking sleepily.
“I’m flying to Z City in three days to shoot a film. Book me a ticket.”
Luo Nianshu squinted. “Don’t you have a private jet?”
“It broke,” Qiao Jinyan said with a straight face.
Yeah right, Luo Nianshu scoffed silently.
“Please make sure there are no mistakes. This director is famous—we can’t afford any errors.”
Ugh, she sounds so sweet right now… the beautician squealed internally.
“Got it,” Luo Nianshu replied weakly.
Qiao Jinyan smiled warmly and patted the massage chair beside her. “My poor assistant must be exhausted. Why don’t you get a massage too?”
“You’re such a caring boss,” the beautician chimed in.
Qiao Jinyan lowered her head demurely. “It’s the least I can do.”
Luo Nianshu: “…” Keep acting. Don’t mind me.
The beautician gave Luo Nianshu a disapproving look. Ungrateful assistant. If I had a boss like Qiao Jinyan, I’d be over the moon!
“Come on,” Qiao Jinyan patted the chair again. “Let the beautician give you a massage.”
Still suspicious, Luo Nianshu hesitated.
What scheme is this fox planning now?
“You’re such a great boss! I want to be your assistant too!” the beautician’s eyes sparkled with admiration.
“My assistant isn’t just anyone,” Qiao Jinyan said with a meaningful tone.
The beautician blinked. Why did that sound… vaguely flirty?
“Still not coming?” Qiao Jinyan urged again.
“Are you really letting me relax this time?” Luo Nianshu narrowed her eyes.
Qiao Jinyan pouted, looking hurt. “Of course. How could I bear to see my employee suffer?”
Luo Nianshu: “…”
Then who’s been tormenting me the past few days?
“You don’t trust me? I’m hurt…” Qiao Jinyan’s eyes shimmered as if on the verge of tears.
Beautician: “Don’t make her sad! Hurry up and lie down!”
Luo Nianshu: “…”
After hesitating, she chose the massage chair furthest away from Qiao Jinyan and slowly laid down. She peeked at Qiao Jinyan who was lying there peacefully, no tricks in sight.
Still wary, Luo Nianshu adjusted herself, trying to stay alert. But fatigue came crashing down like a tidal wave. Within minutes, she fell into a deep sleep.
She couldn’t be woken up by anyone now.
She’s asleep already? Qiao Jinyan turned to look at the woman napping in the corner and smiled.
“She must be really tired,” the beautician said, stunned.
Of course she was. Qiao Jinyan had been dragging her around non-stop.
“By the way, can I get that autograph now?” the beautician asked excitedly, holding out a pen and paper.
Qiao Jinyan raised a finger to her lips. “Shh.” Her tone was unusually firm, startling the beautician.
She gestured toward the sleeping assistant. “She’s still sleeping.”
The beautician immediately quieted down.
Sigh… Qiao Jinyan is just too kind to her assistant.
