- Chapter 2 - Miss Lou, I Have No Scent
2: Miss Lou, I Have No Scent
After humans migrated from Earth, they gradually developed a second gender.
For both Alphas and Omegas, pheromones—which are only abundantly released during heat cycles or marking—are an extremely private matter.
For an Omega to ask an Alpha about their pheromones so openly is an exceedingly bold, almost blatant, act of seduction.
Lou Huaiche leaned down, one hand braced against the table, her entire body exuding an astonishing mix of allure and flippancy.
Her smooth, jet-black hair cascaded down, casting shadows across her face. She narrowed her eyes slightly and placed her other hand gently over Jiang Youbai’s.
“Your Highness, weren’t you tempted by me?”
Lou Huaiche felt like she was going mad.
Her bl00d roared through her veins, waves of indescribable excitement surging through her, devouring her rationality entirely.
In this state of extreme exhilaration, flashes of every past death flickered before her eyes. She bit the tip of her tongue, and the metallic taste of bl00d immediately filled her mouth.
She knew she shouldn’t be making such overt advances toward Jiang Youbai right now.
But her emotions were overwhelming, and she desperately wanted to bind herself to Jiang Youbai, to cling to this lifeline.
Jiang Youbai remained silent, gazing at her with an inscrutable expression before smiling faintly. “I’m flattered by your affection, Miss Lou. Unfortunately, my glands are defective—I have no pheromones.”
Lou Huaiche froze.
An Alpha with defective glands was, to put it crudely, essentially impotent.
She hadn’t expected such a response, and in this context, it felt both absurd and eerie. Her previously soaring emotions instantly cooled.
No matter how intense her excitement had been, having it doused with such a mood-killing statement was enough to calm anyone down.
Lou Huaiche gave Jiang Youbai a complicated look, scrutinizing her up and down.
The two stared at each other for a moment before Jiang Youbai asked, “Is there anything else, Miss Lou?”
Lou Huaiche shook her head, her gaze distant and tinged with a hint of barely perceptible pity. “No.”
She drifted back to her seat like a lost soul.
The system carefully weighed its words before asking Jiang Youbai, “Host… are you really… incapable?”
Jiang Youbai replied, “Not sure. I’ve never had a heat cycle, and the royal family’s private hospital hasn’t found any issues yet. But it’s better to assume the worst.”
The system: “…”
If no issues were found, didn’t that mean there weren’t any? What kind of logic was “assuming the worst”?
It couldn’t even be bothered to ask why Jiang Youbai had said that.
This host had a mind of her own—sometimes brilliant, sometimes utterly erratic. Asking was pointless.
After sitting for a few minutes, Lou Huaiche suddenly remembered that all royal family members, especially Alphas, underwent rigorous testing after differentiation. If Jiang Youbai truly had no pheromones, she would never have been unanimously approved by the cabinet as the heir.
Jiang Youbai had simply been brushing her off—no, not even brushing her off. It was more like she’d felt like being a nuisance for no reason.
Going back to ask why she’d lied would just make Lou Huaiche look foolish.
The problem was, who in their right mind would casually spout such nonsense? Anyone hearing it would believe it at least a little.
Lou Huaiche’s expression turned icy. Being fed such an obvious lie, as if she were a naive child, left her simmering with irritation.
Just then, someone behind her called out, “Lou Huaiche.”
She turned and immediately locked eyes with Jiang Youbai.
The elegant young Alpha smiled at her, eyes crinkling mischievously, and gave her a slight nod.
Lou Huaiche: “…”
This person was annoying.
She averted her gaze and addressed the class monitor who had called her. “What is it?”
“The school opening celebration requires each class to prepare three performances. Are you interested in signing up?” the monitor asked. Though phrased as a question, he was certain Lou Huaiche wouldn’t refuse.
As a university preparatory class, their schedule wasn’t overly demanding, and those looking to expand their social circles early were already making connections.
In university life, the best way to stand out was through school events—especially campus-wide ones.
Lou Huaiche was an actress who had already starred in a film that had made waves. Though she’d recently been embroiled in vague scandalous rumors, this was the perfect opportunity to shift public and fan attention by showcasing herself.
Making a splash at a prestigious institution like Pandora University would be a huge boost to her career.
To the monitor’s surprise, Lou Huaiche declined immediately. “No, I’d rather focus on my studies.”
The monitor was taken aback. After a pause, he said slowly, “Ah, alright. Studying hard is good too.”
Influenced by societal norms, many wealthy and well-connected Omegas attended top universities solely to mingle with high-status young Alphas, facilitating arranged marriages.
Studying was pointless—they didn’t need to inherit or manage family businesses anyway.
Posting daily life photos online, flaunting their relationships with Alphas, and amassing fans as decorative influencers or minor celebrities was the extent of many aristocratic Omegas’ lives.
Omegas—especially female Omegas—were often seen as inherently more emotional and fragile, a lingering cultural relic from earlier gender norms. Female Omegas were considered the epitome of delicacy.
For Lou Huaiche to claim she wanted to focus on her studies was practically nonsense.
Just then, a gentle voice chimed in from behind them. “What’s this about a school opening ceremony?”
The monitor turned and saw Jiang Youbai.
“Many universities hold a spring celebration at the start of the academic year, lasting three to five days. There are fairs, sports meets, and ceremonies—mostly to encourage student interaction,” he explained carefully, mindful of the royal family member asking.
After listening, Jiang Youbai asked with interest, “Oh? Would playing the piano count?”
The monitor hesitated. “Generally, Alphas don’t participate in performances.”
Jiang Youbai’s enthusiasm only grew. “Then I suppose my participation would draw quite a bit of attention.”
The monitor: “…”
This was exhausting.
Performances were usually livestreamed. If a princess took part, the school would have to worry about privacy, security, and the risk of assassination.
The monitor forced a smile. “Your Highness, that might be… difficult. The school has no precedent for this.”
Jiang Youbai sighed regretfully. “What a shame. I was hoping to perform with Miss Lou.”
Lou Huaiche shot her a glance but said nothing.
Sensing the odd tension between them, the monitor quickly excused himself to approach other students.
