After the Online Romance with the Campus Beauty Roommate Went Wrong - Chapter 10
The next morning, Sang Shi’an was jolted awake by her alarm.
For several disoriented seconds, she stared blankly before realizing she was in Jian Chenyu’s room. This time, she hadn’t been quite as drunk, and memories of the previous night flooded back.
She sat frozen on the bed for a few more seconds before stiffly getting up and leaving the room.
Fortunately, Jian Chenyu had already left. Su Ningyue was waiting for her on the sofa. “Senior Jian’s advisor needed to see her, so she left early. We have class first period, so hurry and get ready.”
“Okay, okay,” Sang Shi’an mumbled, rubbing her still-sleepy eyes as she headed to the bathroom.
Su Ningyue, equally hungry, urged her on: “Alright, hurry up then.”
It was 7:30 AM, the peak hour for breakfast stalls. While waiting, Sang Shi’an kicked Su Ningyue’s foot irritably. “Next time you go drinking, can you put a note with your sister’s contact info in your phone case?”
Su Ningyue clutched her chest dramatically, striking a pose like a heartbroken widow. “Are you mad I interrupted your time with Senior Jian? Didn’t you say you two don’t sleep together? When Senior Jian mentioned it last night, I didn’t see you protesting very strongly.”
She lowered her hand and clicked her tongue twice. “You were so easily fooled by just a few words from her. What am I going to do? I’m starting to think you two really are having an affair.”
Sang Shi’an had only been testing the waters, but when she realized Su Ningyue wasn’t as drunk as she’d pretended, she immediately snapped, “If you weren’t that drunk, why didn’t you say something? You made me sleep in the same bed with her!”
Su Ningyue calmly defended herself. “We were both drunk. What if something happened between two drunk people sleeping together? Have you forgotten how all those novels start?”
Sang Shi’an had to admit Su Ningyue’s logic made some sense.
But…
This reminded her of the advice her “dog-headed strategists” had given her during dinner last night.
As if reading her mind, Su Ningyue took the two rice balls and continued chattering incessantly.
“So, are you going to invite Senior Jian to dinner today? Do you think she’ll come?”
“Or how about this? Since there are so many people around, why don’t you kiss me and make me your official girlfriend?”
Sang Shi’an was speechless. “Stop, stop, stop! Enough! You’re getting more ridiculous by the minute!”
Su Ningyue blinked innocently. “If you won’t let me kiss you, does that mean you’d rather have dinner with Senior Jian? Honestly, you’ve already slept together. What’s the big deal about just having a meal or taking a walk together?”
Sang Shi’an: ……
She’s insane!
Just lying next to each other doesn’t count as sleeping together!
She edged away, gesturing dismissively. “I don’t talk to people with poor language skills. Go away.”
Su Ningyue burst into laughter. “Why are you acting like some closeted homophobe? It’s just sleeping together!”
Sang Shi’an, defeated, collapsed. “Please, just shut up.”
Before the first class of the day began, Sang Shi’an finally understood why Jian Chenyu had left so early that morning.
Professor Xu had just opened his lecture notes when he announced, “There will be a pop quiz next class. I’ll have a graduate student come to proctor it, and the results will count toward your final grade.”
The classroom erupted in groans and protests. The Monday morning drowsiness vanished instantly. Before the bell even rang, students were already uncapping their pens, ready to take notes.
The bell was about to ring when a few gasps of surprise rippled through the classroom. Sang Shi’an initially ignored them until Xu Taotao snatched her notebook.
“What are you looking at? Quick, see who’s here!”
“It’s just a graduate student—”
The sentence trailed off.
The person who had walked in was none other than Jian Chenyu.
She was also the proctor Professor Xu had mentioned would be supervising their exam later.
“Aren’t you friends with Senior Jian? Why don’t you go say hi?” Xu Taotao’s eyes lit up as she watched Jian Chenyu, who was carrying the professor’s lecture notes.
“No,” Sang Shi’an replied, glancing at Jian Chenyu before returning to her phone to play a game. “You know her too, right? You go say hi.”
Sang Shi’an remained stubbornly rooted in her seat. Xu Taotao and the others, who had hoped for some drama, could only sigh in disappointment.
Ten seconds later, Sang Shi’an received a message from Jian Chenyu.
Is the seat to your left taken?
In Sang Shi’an’s childhood friend group chat, someone had just sent an invitation for a weekend gathering. She ignored it, replying to the message in the group chat before exiting the conversation. Only then did she confirm that the previous message had indeed come from Jian Chenyu.
Sang Shi’an: The first row is so empty. Can’t you just sit there?
Jian Chenyu didn’t reply. Instead, she walked directly toward them. Su Ningyue, who was sitting on the aisle seat, was asked by Jian Chenyu if the inner seat was taken. Before Sang Shi’an could stop her, Su Ningyue enthusiastically replied, “No, it’s free!”
Sang Shi’an: ……
Reluctantly, Sang Shi’an stood up to let Jian Chenyu sit down.
Fortunately, the bell rang as soon as Jian Chenyu settled in, preventing anyone from teasing them.
Jian Chenyu sat quietly beside her, not mentioning their night together. It was as if she had simply borrowed a seat from an acquaintance, and Sang Shi’an breathed a small sigh of relief.
Professor Xu’s pop quizzes were never for naught; they all counted toward the final grade.
Sang Shi’an opened her textbook and focused on the lecture.
Between the two class sessions, there was a ten-minute break. After Professor Xu left, Jian Chenyu walked to the podium, tapped the desk lightly, and her long hair shimmered with a radiant glow in the sunlight.
“Excuse me, everyone. I’m Jian Chenyu, a first-year graduate student. While you were in class, I reviewed the problems Professor Xu left behind. Several of the calculation problems are quite complex and might take more than one class period to complete. Would you mind if we started early?”
“If we start early, will there be extra credit?” a girl in the class eagerly raised her hand.
Immediately, the boys began to tease, “Can we add Senior Sister’s WeChat? I want to ask her questions after class!”
“Yeah, I have questions too!”
“Senior Sister, is that okay?”
The classroom erupted in a chorus of teasing.
Jian Chenyu tapped the quiz paper in her hand twice. “Of course you can ask questions.”
Then, she picked up a piece of chalk and began writing on the back blackboard.
Her movements were deliberate and unhurried, her expression serene. Combined with her refined and elegant demeanor, each stroke seemed to unfold in slow motion, like frames from a film projected one by one across the classroom.
During this, Su Ningyue sighed, “Oh no, Senior Jian’s WeChat is going to be flooded with friend requests from the whole school now.”
Sang Shi’an, however, frowned at the nearly completed string of digits and blurted out, “This doesn’t seem to be…”
“Doesn’t seem to be what?”
Soon, someone in the classroom answered, “Wait, that’s Professor Xu’s WeChat! Senior Sister! You tricked us!”
Su Ningyue burst out laughing. “Were you about to say that’s not her phone number?” she teased Sang Shi’an. “You’ve even memorized her phone number?”
Sang Shi’an pretended not to hear, burying her nose in her microeconomics textbook. “Shouldn’t you be studying? Do you even want to pass this test?”
Su Ningyue: Tch.
Jian Chenyu’s voice rang out from the podium: “If you have any questions, Professor Xu is very approachable and responsible.”
The class erupted in groans and complaints.
Jian Chenyu stepped down from the podium. “Since there are no objections, I’ll start distributing the papers.”
During the pop quiz in the second half of class, Sang Shi’an fidgeted nervously, convinced Jian Chenyu’s gaze was fixed on her. But when she looked up, she saw Jian Chenyu reviewing other students’ papers, adopting the stern demeanor of a senior sister.
Sang Shi’an was the first to finish. As she placed her paper on the podium, Jian Chenyu called out, “Sang Shi’an.”
Sang Shi’an turned around.
“Come help me verify the class attendance.”
Sang Shi’an paused, quickly realizing the reason. During the previous pop quiz, some students had used proxies to submit their papers. However, one proxy had written the wrong student ID, exposing the deception.
To prevent a recurrence, Professor Xu had specifically instructed Jian Chenyu to check student IDs when collecting the papers.
Since Jian Chenyu had to supervise the exam, this tedious task fell to Sang Shi’an, who had finished early.
Sang Shi’an reluctantly went to help Jian Chenyu check attendance against the roster.
They discovered three students who had slipped through the cracks.
With Jian Chenyu present, Sang Shi’an couldn’t help anyone cheat.
The substitute teachers had worked all morning, likely without earning a single penny.
Under the curious gazes of the classroom, Sang Shi’an maintained her composure until her face stiffened. Finally, the bell rang, signaling the end of class.
Afterward, she followed Jian Chenyu to Professor Xu’s office.
On the way, Jian Chenyu asked, “You handed in your paper so quickly. Did you answer all the questions?”
Sang Shi’an retorted, “Didn’t you look at my paper when I handed it in?”
She had clearly seen Jian Chenyu flip her exam over and examine the questions on the back while she was checking the roster.
Jian Chenyu explained, “I didn’t read your answers. I was just checking to see if you had skipped any questions.”
Sang Shi’an pouted. “So if I said I hadn’t finished, would you give me my paper back to add a few more lines?”
“No,” Jian Chenyu replied.
Sang Shi’an shrugged and said nothing more.
As they walked out of the office building, Jian Chenyu’s voice came from behind, cutting straight to the point: “Want to grab lunch together?”
“Don’t you think that’s a bit odd?” Sang Shi’an asked, wanting to refuse.
She explained, “We rarely see each other, so they think we’re having a secret affair. But if we see each other too often, they’ll accuse us of flaunting our relationship. No matter what we do, we can’t win.”
Jian Chenyu stood against the light, her lashes drooping slightly. “Then let me rephrase: it’s lunchtime. May I invite you to have lunch with me?”
Sang Shi’an instinctively wanted to ask, “Don’t you have anyone else to eat with?”
But when her gaze landed on Jian Chenyu’s face, studying that cool, composed expression, she remembered Jian Chenyu’s demanding schedule—juggling graduate studies, experiments, and managing her company. It seemed unlikely she shared much in common with the other Finance graduate students.
Sang Shi’an felt a pang of surprise.
She had always assumed Jian Chenyu was the center of attention wherever she went, with people clamoring for her attention. She had never imagined Jian Chenyu might not even have someone to eat lunch with at school.
Suddenly, Sang Shi’an realized Jian Chenyu’s life might not be as effortless as she had imagined. She couldn’t quite describe her feelings—a mix of unease and a sense of having glimpsed Jian Chenyu’s true self, bringing them closer.
Sang Shi’an pressed her lips together and said dryly, “Fine, I guess.”
On her way to the cafeteria, Sang Shi’an overheard a campus announcement.
The male student who had harassed her last Friday and nearly injured her had been publicly reprimanded and expelled from Yanjing University as a cautionary example.
Her mood suddenly improved considerably.
After a long day of classes, Sang Shi’an returned to her apartment in the Left Bank Community, planning to order takeout for dinner. But before she could, another notification popped up.
It was a reply from Professor Xu regarding the research paper she had submitted earlier.
The professor pointed out a discrepancy in the data she had cited for one of her case studies. This wasn’t due to her carelessness, but rather because one of the parties involved in the case had appealed the ruling two days prior. Having won the appeal, they had altered the outcome of the bet.
Professor Xu noted that such reversals were extremely rare in bet agreements, calling it a stroke of luck that allowed her to research the case’s recent developments and reanalyze the reasons for the successful appeal.
This professor was none other than Sang Shi’an’s academic advisor, Professor Xu.
If it had been a message from any other professor, Sang Shi’an might have brushed it off, promising to look into it later when she had time. But since it was a notification from Professor Xu, she dared not take it lightly. She immediately put down her phone and went to find her computer.
Sang Shi’an had gone out for Japanese food after leaving home on Sunday, which had delayed her plans to buy a new computer.
It seemed she would have to borrow Jian Chenyu’s computer.
The last time she had borrowed it, she had left it on the desk in the living room. She didn’t know if Jian Chenyu had taken it back to her room.
As she texted Jian Chenyu to explain why she needed to borrow the computer, she walked toward the living room.
Jian Chenyu agreed to let her use it.
Jian Chenyu’s computer wasn’t password-protected. Sang Shi’an imported the paper she had written previously, opened the browser, and set the computer to split-screen mode so both pages could be displayed simultaneously.
For Sang Shi’an, the losing party in the bet winning the lawsuit wasn’t good news. It meant her previous analysis of the reasons for their loss, based on her “God’s-eye view,” was now invalid. Instead, she had to find reasons within the original causes of their defeat that could explain their reversal of fortune—a task that felt embarrassingly like slapping herself in the face.
But the next moment, her gaze froze on the other side of the computer screen.
The paper, the lawsuit, the bet—everything vanished from her mind.
She stared fixedly at the browsing history that had popped up below the browser bar, her shock beyond words.
The long list of browsing history revealed:
