- Chapter 13 - Momentary Clarity
Cold… Suffocating…
In the darkness, countless hands seemed to be pulling her down, dragging her into an even deeper abyss.
Her consciousness felt like a stubborn rock at the bottom of an icy lake, struggling futilely to rise, only to be entangled by invisible weeds.
A chaotic flood of fragmented memories surged forth:
The humiliation of having cake smeared across her face, the hatred of being forced to lick Lin Zhaoyue’s shoe tips, the shame of having her name written in lipstick at the bar… And those bright, beautiful eyes, always filled with malice and mockery…
Lin Zhaoyue… Lin Zhaoyue!
That’s right! It was Lin Zhaoyue who had shoved her head underwater!
That woman… still as vicious as ever!
Fueled by intense hatred and a desperate will to survive, she violently broke free from the darkness’s grip.
Shen Yuan’s eyelashes fluttered, and she forced open a narrow slit between her lids, her vision still blurry, the world hazy with water.
The first thing she saw was an enlarged face, tear-streaked and distraught.
It was Lin Zhaoyue.
“…System! System, answer me! Why isn’t she awake yet?! If she doesn’t wake up soon, I’m calling 911!”
Lin Zhaoyue’s tearful voice echoed through the bathroom, her urgency thick enough to cut through the air.
“System…? What’s that?”
As Shen Yuan’s consciousness gradually cleared, she finally understood her situation: Lin Zhaoyue was performing CPR on her.
Compressions… Between compressions, she felt a warm, soft touch against her lips, transferring frantic breaths into her lungs…
No wonder she had felt someone touching her mouth earlier.
Shen Yuan’s gaze instinctively swept over their current positions.
Lin Zhaoyue straddled her, her head tilted back as she pressed down forcefully on Shen Yuan’s chest, her body swaying slightly with the effort. Her soaked underwear clung tightly to her skin, outlining her delicate curves, while strands of wet hair plastered messily against her cheeks and neck. She looked utterly disheveled and panicked, like a small animal drenched in a downpour.
A complex mix of emotions surged through Shen Yuan’s heart.
Lin Zhaoyue was saving her?
The same Lin Zhaoyue who hated her to the core, who took pleasure in bullying her, was now desperately trying to save her life?
And… she was even crying? Crying so heartbrokenly?
Why?
Shen Yuan couldn’t understand. She couldn’t fathom Lin Zhaoyue’s reaction.
But right now, having a nearly half-naked, sobbing woman straddling her and performing emergency resuscitation felt utterly bizarre.
Moreover, if Lin Zhaoyue pressed down again, Shen Yuan’s ribs might actually break.
Shen Yuan’s throat bobbed as she suppressed the urge to shove Lin Zhaoyue away immediately, deciding instead to feign just waking up.
She deliberately coughed twice, her voice weak and strained, mimicking the sensation of water still in her throat.
“Cough… cough cough…”
“!!!!”
Lin Zhaoyue, who was about to perform another chest compression, froze mid-motion, her eyes widening in shock.
She lowered her head in disbelief, staring intently at Shen Yuan beneath her.
“Shen… Shen Yuan?” Lin Zhaoyue called out tentatively, her voice still trembling.
Shen Yuan slowly, laboriously opened her eyes, her gaze still hazy. Water droplets clung to her long lashes, making her look both frail and innocent.
“Cough cough…” She coughed twice more, as if only just emerging from the brink of drowning.
“You’re awake! You’re really awake!”
Once Lin Zhaoyue confirmed that Shen Yuan had truly woken up, her taut nerves snapped instantly. A wave of overwhelming joy and lingering fear washed over her, and she could no longer hold back. With a loud sob, she burst into tears, the droplets rolling down her cheeks like pearls from a broken string.
“Thank goodness… sniff… you’re alive… Thank goodness… You scared me to death…”
Lin Zhaoyue wept tears of pure relief, her voice choked with emotion. She completely forgot how inappropriate their current position was, instinctively reaching out to grip Shen Yuan’s shoulders tightly, as if to reassure herself that Shen Yuan was truly alive.
Her bright eyes now overflowed with the relief of having escaped disaster, tears streaming down her face, making her look utterly pitiful.
Shen Yuan: “……”
Watching Lin Zhaoyue’s wildly emotional reaction, as if she had regained something precious she had lost, Shen Yuan’s mind filled with enormous question marks and a sense of unease.
Wasn’t it Lin Zhaoyue herself who had pushed me into the water?
What happened while I was unconscious? Or does Lin Zhaoyue… have some other motive?
Shen Yuan calmly endured Lin Zhaoyue’s emotional outburst, but deep within her eyes, a scrutinizing gaze remained.
What is this woman up to?
Lin Zhaoyue sobbed uncontrollably, still immersed in the overwhelming relief that “the Female Lead hadn’t been killed by her.” She completely failed to notice the shift in Shen Yuan’s thoughts, continuing to grip her shoulders and shake her.
Shen Yuan grew increasingly impatient with the shaking, not to mention their disheveled state and the compromising position they were in.
Lin Zhaoyue’s warm tears dripped onto her cheek, leaving an uncomfortably sticky sensation.
Enough.
Shen Yuan’s eyes turned cold, no longer able to tolerate this hypocritical performance and bizarre intimacy.
Gathering her strength, she abruptly raised her hand and shoved Lin Zhaoyue away.
“Let go—”
Lin Zhaoyue, still caught in the tangled emotions of lingering fear and overwhelming relief, lost her balance from the sudden push. With a startled “Ah!” she stumbled backward and fell to the floor.
Shen Yuan, having just regained consciousness, was already weak and drained. The force of pushing Lin Zhaoyue, combined with the slippery, water-soaked tiles, caused her feet to slide out from under her as she tried to stand.
“Ugh!”
She managed only a muffled groan before her head slammed heavily against the cold, hard tiles.
A dull thud echoed through the bathroom.
Lin Zhaoyue, who had just fallen nearby, hadn’t even had time to react when she saw Shen Yuan collapse again.
Lin Zhaoyue: “…?!”
Right, the way she looked at me underwater just now… it was like she was starting to hate me again!
Lin Zhaoyue was still nervously wondering if Shen Yuan was about to revert to the cold, decisive Female Lead from the original plot when she saw Shen Yuan’s closed eyelids flutter a few times before snapping open.
But her eyes held no trace of coldness.
Instead, they were dazed, watery, and slightly bewildered, like someone just waking up.
It was the familiar gaze of the amnesiac Shen Yuan—the one who had mistaken Lin Zhaoyue for her fiancée.
Lin Zhaoyue: “!!”
It’s definitely the same idiot version of Shen Yuan, she thought.
Could I have been mistaken when we were in the water earlier?
She had no idea that Shen Yuan had briefly regained her memories just moments ago.
To Lin Zhaoyue, Shen Yuan’s eyes seemed even more vacant than before. Oh no, does hitting her head make her dumber each time?
Shen Yuan blinked, her gaze slowly focusing.
A dull ache pulsed at the back of her head, making her hiss softly.
She looked around blankly—the floor was a mess of water stains, and she… seemed to be naked?
Her eyes darted downward, and she saw a damp piece of fabric covering her chest. She vaguely recognized it as Lin Zhaoyue’s T-shirt.
Then her gaze fell on Lin Zhaoyue, who was sitting in front of her, barely covered.
