- Chapter 36 - Memory Recovery
The term felt utterly foreign. Even Lin Zhaoyue, still reeling from shock, couldn’t help but freeze at the unfamiliar address.
But Shen Yuan’s head wound was still bleeding, the warm, sticky sensation lingering on Lin Zhaoyue’s fingertips. Instinctive concern overwhelmed her momentary confusion.
“You’re bleeding! Don’t move!” Lin Zhaoyue instinctively reached out to steady her again, her voice urgent. “I’ve called an ambulance. It’ll be here soon…”
Before she could finish, Shen Yuan’s brow furrowed as if she’d been touched by something filthy. She abruptly jerked away with such force that Lin Zhaoyue, already weakened by pain, nearly stumbled backward.
“Don’t touch me,” Shen Yuan said, her voice dripping with undisguised repulsion.
Ignoring the throbbing pain in her head, she casually wiped the wound with the back of her hand, then braced herself against the glass-strewn floor tiles and swiftly stood up on her own.
The dull, throbbing ache inside her skull felt far more intense than the superficial injury.
Shen Yuan realized her recent memories were fragmented and disjointed.
The last time she’d woken up was in the bathroom, but she’d quickly lost consciousness again.
Before that… the car accident.
What had happened in between? How had she ended up here? What had just occurred? She had no idea.
To understand the situation, Shen Yuan didn’t immediately check her injuries. Instead, she slowly surveyed her surroundings.
Several arrogant Young Masters, scattered banknotes on the floor, shattered liquor bottles, and a ransacked private room.
Outside, onlookers cast curious or contemptuous glances.
This scene… how eerily familiar.
It overlapped slowly and cruelly with countless memories buried deep within her mind—scenes where Lin Zhaoyue had ruthlessly humiliated and manipulated her.
Bars, birthday parties, school corridors… the locations varied, and the methods changed, but the core remained constant:
Lin Zhaoyue, looking down from her lofty perch, relishing Shen Yuan’s wretched state and reveling in the pleasure of crushing her beneath her heel.
“Hah.”
Shen Yuan let out a soft, bitter laugh, thick with mockery and bone-deep weariness.
“Another performance? How many times must you stage this farce to be satisfied, hmm?”
“Miss Lin, how many jobs must I change, how many dirty, low-paying places must I work at before you’ll finally leave me alone? Before you’ll stop haunting me like this?”
She stared at Lin Zhaoyue, who returned her gaze.
System: Host, I think… our main heroine might have regained her memories?
Lin Zhaoyue had already realized it.
The Shen Yuan standing before her perfectly matched the Shen Yuan from her memories: the one who hated her to the core, with eyes filled with dark malice.
Gazing into Shen Yuan’s familiar yet alien hatred, Lin Zhaoyue felt a bitter, astringent lump in her throat.
She opened her mouth, wanting to explain, to say it wasn’t like that.
But under Shen Yuan’s clear, unwavering gaze, her words seemed pale, feeble, even laughable.
After all, everything that had happened tonight was ultimately her fault.
Yes, she had been the one who first hit Shen Yuan with her car, then cared for her while she was amnesiac; later, she had personally pushed her underwater, only to perform CPR; and now she was here, hypocritically pretending to stop others from bullying her…
If she were in Shen Yuan’s shoes, she would probably think this person was utterly fake and mentally unstable.
But from now on, she wouldn’t have to pretend anymore.
Lin Zhaoyue gradually realized that every time she presumptuously tried to change the plot, she only brought about worse consequences.
Perhaps following the original storyline was the best choice after all.
A searing pain and an even more intense heart palpitations struck simultaneously. Lin Zhaoyue could no longer support herself. Her body swayed, her knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed again.
Just as she was about to fall, an arm caught her in time.
It wasn’t Shen Yuan.
It was one of the black-clad bodyguards who had been silently standing nearby.
“Young Miss!” the bodyguard’s voice was filled with concern.
Shen Yuan watched Lin Zhaoyue suddenly lose her strength, her face as pale as paper, her eyes flickering with complex emotions.
Her earlier push of Lin Zhaoyue… had the other woman’s reaction been too extreme?
The momentary numbing sting that had passed between them, and now Lin Zhaoyue’s precarious state…
Doubt, like a creeping vine, quietly climbed back into Shen Yuan’s heart.
But years of humiliation and hatred, seared into her very being like a brand, instinctively led her to interpret every one of Lin Zhaoyue’s actions with the worst possible malice.
Perhaps… this was just another trick? A show of weakness? A ploy for sympathy?
Shen Yuan’s gaze turned icy again. She stepped back, distancing herself from Lin Zhaoyue, and watched coldly.
Supported by the bodyguard, Lin Zhaoyue struggled to regain her footing.
“Oh? Finally come to your senses and remember who you are?”
Lin Zhaoyue forced a wan smile, her voice hoarse with pain but deliberately laced with disdain as she felt the electric current slowly subside.
“I thought you’d keep up that pathetic act, wagging your tail and begging for my affection.”
She deliberately ignored the wound on the back of Shen Yuan’s head, as well as the lingering warmth and stickiness on her fingertips, as if the panicked, disoriented person from moments ago had never existed.
Shen Yuan regarded her with icy eyes, saying nothing.
Having lost her memories of the past few weeks, she naturally had no idea what Lin Zhaoyue meant by “pathetic act.”
However, she betrayed no reaction, simply replying coolly:
“Since Miss Lin’s game is over, I should be going.”
With that, Shen Yuan didn’t even glance at Lin Zhaoyue again. Ignoring her still-bleeding wound, she turned and strode toward the VIP room’s exit.
Her back was ramrod straight, but her steps remained unsteady.
“Wait!”
Seeing Shen Yuan about to leave, Lin Zhaoyue blurted out in a panic.
She couldn’t let Shen Yuan leave with that injury! What if something happened on the way home…?
Shen Yuan stopped in her tracks and asked coldly, “Does Miss Lin have any further instructions?”
“I…” Lin Zhaoyue watched her resolute back, her throat tightening. Words of concern rolled on her tongue, but she forcibly swallowed them down, replacing them with a different tone.
She took a deep breath, straining to maintain her impatient demeanor. “I already called an ambulance. What, do you want them to come for nothing? Be sensible and go to the hospital.”
Shen Yuan didn’t turn around, but her shoulders stiffened slightly. After a few seconds, she shook her head with a self-deprecating smile and sighed, “There are plenty of other injured people on the ground. It won’t be a wasted trip. Besides, I can’t afford the ambulance. No need for Miss Lin to trouble herself.”
With that, she left without another word, her footsteps carrying her out of the private room and into the chaotic crowd and flashing lights outside.
