- After the Paranoid Female Lead Lost Her Memory, She Insisted on Pursuing This Cannon Fodder
- Chapter 39 - If That's the Case, Why Do You Keep Bullying Her?
Shen Yuan stared blankly at the screen.
After the day’s barrage of shocks, she was numb to yet another revelation.
But who is this?
The profile picture was unfamiliar. Even with her memory loss, she couldn’t have gotten engaged to someone in just a few days, right?
A sense of dread washed over her as she tapped the chat window.
The next moment, she saw her own sent messages:
“Zhaoyue, look! [Image] My first attempt at making milk tea! Does it look tasty? (〃▽〃)”
Shen Yuan glanced up at the ceiling.
It seems a bit low. Not high enough to hang myself.
So… what exactly is going on?!
A terrifying thought flashed through her mind.
She suddenly remembered the strange wallpaper… Zhang Wei’s constant hints about how “devoted” she was to Lin Zhaoyue… Lin Zhaoyue’s cutting remark at the bar: “I thought you’d keep fawning over me with that stupid look on your face”…
And then there was that brief memory flash, that inexplicable “CPR”…
Now, forced together by this glaring contact name, these fragments coalesced into a chilling outline—a truth so horrifying it threatened to induce existential dread.
“Weiwei… during the time I lost my memory… what exactly happened between Lin Zhaoyue and me?”
Zhang Wei handed her a glass of warm water, noticing her expression—like she’d swallowed a fly and couldn’t spit it out. Zhang Wei already had a pretty good idea of what had transpired.
Suppressing the urge to grin wildly, Zhang Wei forced a serious expression and pretended to recall the events with solemnity:
“What happened? Well… you got into a car accident, hit your head, and lost your memory. When you woke up in the hospital, you…”
Zhang Wei paused, as if carefully choosing her words, her gaze flickering evasively.
But she couldn’t hold back any longer and burst into laughter.
Shen Yuan: “……”
“I what?”
“Ahem.” Zhang Wei cleared her throat, struggling to contain her amusement, but her crescent-shaped eyes betrayed her.
“It’s nothing much, just… um… you insisted that Lin Zhaoyue was your fiancée.”
Shen Yuan’s vision went black.
“Then, somehow, it escalated into Lin Zhaoyue wanting to dump you, and you deciding to relentlessly pursue her.”
Shen Yuan’s vision went black again.
“Oh, right! You even told me you were going to start from scratch, become a domineering female CEO, and then marry Lin Zhaoyue!”
Shen Yuan felt her soul slowly drifting out through the crown of her head.
“Wait, there’s more!”
Zhang Wei’s eyes lit up, as if she had been waiting for this moment for ages. She tapped her phone a few times.
“Actually, I thought you looked… well, pretty unique back then, so I casually recorded a short clip…”
Recorded it?!
The next moment, Shen Yuan heard her own voice—full of fiery determination yet utterly naive—blasting from the phone:
“Weiwei, you just don’t get it! Zhaoyue’s testing me! I’m going to revive my plan, start from scratch, and become a powerful, domineering CEO! Then I’ll marry Zhaoyue!”
Shen Yuan’s eyes snapped open, her pupils dilated in shock. She lunged for Zhang Wei’s phone.
“No, Weiwei! Delete it!”
“Hey, don’t grab it!”
Zhang Wei nimbly dodged, holding the phone aloft with a mischievous grin.
“No way! This is precious historical footage—it must be preserved forever! You were so happy when I said I was recording, even saying, ‘Perfect! Now Zhaoyue can see my true feelings!'”
“Zhang! Wei!”
Shen Yuan’s face flushed crimson with mortification and fury.
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop teasing you.”
Seeing Shen Yuan was truly on the verge of losing it, Zhang Wei finally put away her phone, though the smile on her face remained stubbornly in place.
“But seriously, Xiao Yuan, these past few weeks… hmm…”
Zhang Wei carefully chose her words, watching Shen Yuan’s anxious expression. Unable to resist any longer, she finally blurted out the phrase that had been simmering in her mind for ages:
“…you’ve really been acting like Lin Zhaoyue’s lapdog.”
“……”
The word struck Shen Yuan like a bolt from the blue, another devastating blow to her already reeling mind.
She sat frozen in place, feeling like she had already died a little while ago.
“Um… okay, okay, it’s all in the past now! You’ve regained your memories, so let’s just leave the past behind!”
Seeing Shen Yuan’s utterly despondent expression, Zhang Wei seemed to have a pang of conscience. She toned down her laughter slightly, patted Shen Yuan’s shoulder, and tried to offer some comfort.
“But me and my phone will never forget it! Pfft, hahahahaha!”
Her words paused briefly before she burst into laughter again.
Watching Zhang Wei laugh so hard she was nearly convulsing, Shen Yuan felt all her strength drain away.
“Okay, okay, I’ll stop laughing,” Zhang Wei finally said, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes and straightening up, her expression turning slightly more serious. “But I need to say something. Please don’t think I’m betraying you…”
Shen Yuan lifted her eyelids to glance at Zhang Wei, signaling her to continue. After being bombarded with that “dark history” earlier, her tolerance for shocks had increased significantly.
“Actually… I’m not sure if I should say this, but during your amnesia, Lin Zhaoyue’s attitude toward you… it changed quite a bit.”
“Changed?” Shen Yuan frowned. “How could it have changed? Did she find new ways to torment me?”
“No, not like that!” Zhang Wei waved her hands frantically. “I’m not saying she suddenly became a saint. Her Young Miss temper is still as rotten as ever. But… some things were definitely different.”
Shen Yuan’s expression remained blank. “Like what?”
“Like tonight… at the bar.”
Shen Yuan’s eyes sharpened. “What happened at the bar?”
Zhang Wei recounted the events: “You were working there tonight, right? You happened to be serving drinks to Lin Zhaoyue and her group in their private room. Then one of the guys pushed you, spilling the drinks. You crouched down to clean it up…”
As Zhang Wei described the scene, her voice still trembled with lingering fear.
“After a while, someone tried to get handsy with you. Lin Zhaoyue snapped at them! I couldn’t hear clearly from downstairs, but you could tell she was furious. And then those guys actually called for backup…”
Zhang Wei gestured wildly, trying to mimic the scene, though her imitation fell short. Still, she managed to convey some of Lin Zhaoyue’s fierce protectiveness.
“Then the bodyguards she called… Oh my god, the sheer force! They beat those guys to a pulp! I mean… those guys were business partners of the Lin Family! I never imagined she’d risk offending them just for you.”
Shen Yuan listened, utterly stunned.
She never could have imagined the truth would be like this.
She recalled the scene when she had woken up in the private room earlier: Lin Zhaoyue holding her in her arms, her face etched with a panic Shen Yuan had never seen before.
At the time, Shen Yuan had assumed Lin Zhaoyue was simply afraid she had gone too far and might have actually killed her, which was why she had pushed her away without hesitation.
But now, thinking back… Lin Zhaoyue’s face had been deathly pale, her entire body trembling, as if she were genuinely in great distress.
“She… she turned against people for me…” Shen Yuan murmured to herself, her mind in turmoil.
If that were true, why had Lin Zhaoyue repeatedly bullied her?
Lin Zhaoyue’s behavior was utterly contradictory, almost like a split personality.
Wait, back then…
A word suddenly popped into her head.
She looked up at Zhang Wei:
“Weiwei, do you know what a… ‘System’ is?”
