- Chapter 40 - The World's Will Suspends Its Surveillance on You
This was the term Lin Zhaoyue had suddenly mentioned in the bathroom.
“System…? What kind of system…? A game system? A computer system?” Zhang Wei asked half-jokingly. “It couldn’t be… that System, right?”
Shen Yuan looked utterly bewildered.
“‘That System’… which System are you talking about?”
Zhang Wei slapped her thigh, her voice a mix of sudden realization and amusement.
“It’s actually true! Don’t tell me you awakened some System when you lost your memory, and it’s forcing you to pursue Lin Zhaoyue?”
Shen Yuan: “……”
Though she didn’t understand what Zhang Wei was talking about, this “System” seemed to be something that compelled people to do foolish things.
Before she could ask further, Zhang Wei burst into laughter and waved her hand dismissively.
“Forget it, sis. That excuse is way too lame. Don’t come up with such a lame reason next time, okay?”
Zhang Wei clearly didn’t take Shen Yuan’s words seriously, assuming she was just making up a flimsy excuse to justify her previous simping behavior now that her memory had returned.
Shen Yuan stared at Zhang Wei’s utterly disbelieving expression, opened her mouth to speak, but ultimately said nothing.
She lowered her gaze, suppressing the surging, inexplicable suspicions and doubts back into the depths of her heart.
Zhang Wei suddenly thought of something and casually remarked, “Haha, but from another angle, maybe Lin Zhaoyue is only being nice to you because the System is forcing her to.”
Shen Yuan found this explanation somewhat plausible.
Though she didn’t believe in the existence of any System, from her perspective, it made sense that Lin Zhaoyue secretly loathed her but was compelled to restrain her malice for some reason. This seemed like a more logical explanation.
With this thought, Shen Yuan actually felt a sense of relief.
“Oh my gosh, it’s almost 2 AM!” Zhang Wei suddenly exclaimed, jumping to her feet. “I need to get to sleep right away! I have an internship at the company tomorrow morning.”
Shen Yuan instinctively glanced at the time—it was indeed very late. After a long day of turmoil and injury, exhaustion washed over her once more.
“Alright, you should go to bed,” Shen Yuan nodded.
As Zhang Wei quickly pulled a spare blanket from the closet and spread it over the small folding sofa, she continued to chatter, “Speaking of the internship, it’s been especially busy these past few days. In a few days, I’ll even have to go on a short business trip to a neighboring city with my department supervisor—probably for three or four days.”
After making the bed, she turned to look at Shen Yuan, her face etched with concern.
“I won’t be able to keep an eye on you all the time then. Are you sure you’ll be okay on your own? The doctor said you have intermittent amnesia. What if you suddenly… you know… when I’m not around?”
Shen Yuan was taken aback. “Intermittent amnesia?”
“Oh, right! Intermittent! I forgot to tell you.” Zhang Wei slapped her forehead. “The nurse explained that your memory might be unstable. Like how you suddenly recovered this time, you could just as suddenly forget again and revert to… uh… the state where you only remembered Lin Zhaoyue as your fiancée.”
Shen Yuan: “……”
Zhang Wei sighed worriedly. “I don’t know exactly what will happen. The doctor couldn’t say for sure either—we just have to observe. That’s why I’m so worried! What if you suddenly… you know… while I’m away on this business trip? With no one to watch over you, what would happen?”
However, Shen Yuan barely heard Zhang Wei’s remaining words of concern.
Intermittent amnesia…
Could revert at any moment…
Revert to the state where she mistook her enemy for her fiancée…
Revert to the state where she used embarrassing photos as her wallpaper…
Shen Yuan had reverted to the person who used to text Lin Zhaoyue, “Do you like the milk tea I made? (〃▽〃)”
She had become… the person Zhang Wei had mocked for ages…
The simpering, dog-like version of Shen Yuan?!
“Weiwei!”
Shen Yuan grabbed Zhang Wei’s hand urgently.
“When are you going on your business trip? Where to? Take me with you.”
Zhang Wei startled.
“Huh?! Take you with me? But it’s a work trip! I have to follow the project team around…”
“It doesn’t matter. I won’t interfere with your work. I’ll book my own hotel, either next to yours or in the same one. I just need to be able to see you whenever I want!”
Shen Yuan took a deep breath, her gaze locked on Zhang Wei’s eyes. With utmost seriousness, she pleaded:
“If I really lose my memory again and revert to that old self… you have to watch over me. Promise me, no matter what, you won’t let me go near Lin Zhaoyue. Absolutely not!”
Seeing her best friend in such distress, what could Zhang Wei possibly say?
She gripped Shen Yuan’s icy hand tightly and nodded solemnly.
“I promise. I’ll definitely watch over you!”
Meanwhile, at the other end of the city, Lin Zhaoyue was leaning against her headboard, phone in hand, the screen frozen on her chat with “Little Dog.”
System: Host, you’ve been staring at this chat interface for ten minutes now.
Lin Zhaoyue clicked her tongue in annoyance.
That’s not the point! Think about it—because of the plot changes, she’s not only injured but also broke. What if she can’t afford treatment? She wasn’t exactly bright to begin with…
System: According to medical data analysis, mild concussions typically have minimal long-term impact on intelligence, though short-term cognitive decline is possible.
Cognitive decline? Does that mean she’ll become even dumber?
Lin Zhaoyue grew even more worried.
No, she was supposed to get some money in the original plot. I’ll transfer her some now—it’s just following the script.
System: Host, stop explaining yourself to thin air. Based on my observations, the Will of the World seems to have temporarily suspended its monitoring of you.
Lin Zhaoyue: Paused? Why?
System: Probably because your recent actions were too heaven-defying… I mean, contrary to the Will of Heaven. The Will of the World couldn’t bear to watch any longer and simply stopped observing.
Lin Zhaoyue: […] Can’t you say something nicer?
Well, it’s probably for the best if it’s not watching her.
Lin Zhaoyue tapped the input box.
She typed: “How’s your injury?”
Deleted.
Then: “Did you go to the hospital?”
Deleted.
Next: “Hmph, you deserve it.”
…That sounds too harsh, doesn’t it? What if she’s seriously injured?
Deleted.
Finally, Lin Zhaoyue took a deep breath and, in a moment of self-abandonment, typed a single, carefully crafted character and sent it—
Lin Zhaoyue: Are you there?
