- Chapter 14 - "My Wife's Shy. She Gets Scared When I'm Not Around."
As evening settled in and replaced the brightness of day, Lin Bie, dressed in her formal gown, got into the same car as Leng Jinxi.
Leng Jinxi by night seemed like a different person. Clad in a red A-line dress, her long, wavy hair fell loosely down her back. The bold color should have been striking and loud, yet on her it appeared subdued and elegant, even softening the cool aura she usually carried.
The car was comfortably warm, so the shawl she had draped over her shoulders now rested across her lap. Her porcelain skin shimmered faintly under the lights. From Lin Bie’s perspective, she looked gentle and graceful—almost unreal.
Sensing someone’s gaze, Leng Jinxi turned her head to look at her, her refined features catching the light from the window.
“What are you staring at?”
Lin Bie certainly couldn’t say you’re just too good-looking, so she blurted the first excuse that came to mind.
“What were you doing at the café this afternoon?”
Leng Jinxi gave her a sidelong glance, indifferent. “None of your business.”
Lin Bie: “…”
She had only been looking for a casual conversation starter, but ended up getting another jab. This woman’s moods were seriously unpredictable.
Not wanting to poke the bear further, Lin Bie turned to stare out the window instead—just as the car rolled to a stop in front of a lavish banquet hall. Noise and bustle surged around them immediately.
The chatter outside hushed when the guests realized the couple had arrived. Eyes turned toward them as the car door opened. Murmurs quickly spread as Lin Bie reached out to take Leng Jinxi’s hand, intertwining their fingers.
Leng Jinxi lowered her gaze to their joined hands. Lin Bie’s palm was noticeably warmer—almost too hot against her skin.
“Miss Leng,” Lin Bie whispered in her ear, taking advantage of their “public relationship” to lean in close, “I did read the entire file you gave me.”
So that’s why she’d suddenly grabbed her hand—per the instruction file Leng Jinxi had sent her.
Leng Jinxi’s long lashes trembled slightly, her dark eyes unreadable in the dim evening light. But when she looked up again, her face had softened into an elegant, gentle smile.
They stood there at the entrance, speaking in hushed tones, completely drawing the attention of the entire banquet hall. The stars of the wedding banquet had arrived—the evening had officially begun.
Lin Bie led Leng Jinxi inside, heading toward Lin Qingsi. All along the way, she could feel the weight of countless stares.
Curiosity. Envy. Contempt.
She frowned slightly and tightened her grip on Leng Jinxi’s hand.
Among the crowd, she even spotted Shan Yi. The latter quickly looked away, clearly wanting to distance herself—likely still shaken by Lin Bie’s earlier threats.
Good, Lin Bie thought, secretly relieved. She relaxed her hold a little—only for Leng Jinxi to clasp her hand even tighter, with more force than expected.
“I didn’t forget,” Lin Bie whispered to her.
Leng Jinxi ignored her completely.
Lin Bie gave a bitter little smile. Still doesn’t trust me, huh.
“Xiao Bie!” Lin Qingsi called out from afar, and beside her stood Leng Xiuming—Leng Jinxi’s father.
So that’s the guy. Looks all polished on the outside… classic wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing.
Remembering all the things Leng Jinxi had told her about him, Lin Bie felt nothing but disgust, though her expression remained calm. She greeted him with a polite “Uncle.”
Leng Xiuming immediately forced a smile and responded quickly, as if terrified Lin Bie would break off the engagement again.
“What happened before was partly our fault—my poor parenting. It made Jinxi neglect Little Lin, which led to that misunderstanding. But luckily, these two didn’t miss their chance to be together!”
Smooth talker. He was trying to win sympathy by pretending to take the blame.
But Lin Bie nearly gagged.
Who does he think he is, talking about Leng Jinxi like that?
If Leng Jinxi ended up becoming the twisted villainess of the novel, half the blame lies with this man.
“Oh, then it really was your fault, Uncle,” Lin Bie said casually, her voice cutting through the noise. “I know my wife very well. We’re practically glued together every day—no way she could be neglecting me.”
Her words stunned the room. Conversations quieted noticeably.
Leng Jinxi turned to look at her in surprise, her black eyes clouded with complex emotion.
Leng Xiuming’s face flushed red, then pale, then red again. A whole rainbow of emotions played out before he finally squeezed out a stiff smile. “Yes, yes, you’re right. Clearly, I didn’t understand enough.”
He smiled on the outside, but inside he was boiling with resentment. How dare they make him lose face like this?
What did Leng Jinxi say to Lin Bie to make her so disrespectful?
Ungrateful girl!
Everyone else in the room had also heard what Lin Bie just said. Stunned, they now genuinely believed she had fallen in love with Leng Jinxi. One after another, they came forward to shower them with
compliments.
They’d all gossiped behind their backs before—but now, to their faces, they acted warm and friendly, praising how well the two matched. They joked that Lin Bie’s previous outbursts had just been playful tantrums and even took it upon themselves to “forgive” her on Leng Jinxi’s behalf.
Lin Bie: “…”
Still, appearances had to be maintained. She smiled politely, nodded here and there, kept holding Leng Jinxi’s hand, and looked perfectly well-mannered.
Which only made people more shocked at her transformation.
“She’s serious about settling down this time. Such a good kid.”
“Right? You can tell Miss Lin was just going through a phase. Look how great they look together now.”
“Exactly. So polite now—clearly she’d changed. Everyone makes mistakes when they’re young.”
Hearing the same empty flattery over and over made Lin Bie’s ears ring. She glanced over at Leng Jinxi and Lin Qingsi, still chatting away with others. Her palm was sweaty from the prolonged handholding, so she let go and gave a courteous excuse to leave for a bit.
Lin Qingsi noticed her discomfort but didn’t stop her. She just quietly told Leng Jinxi to keep an eye on her, then let them go.
They stepped away from the crowd together. Lin Bie picked up a glass of wine and took a deep sip—only to feel Leng Jinxi’s gaze fall on her. She set the glass down.
“What? Do I have something on my face?”
Leng Jinxi looked away, clinking her glass gently against Lin Bie’s. “No. I’m just surprised you actually followed the instructions.”
Lin Bie gave an exasperated smile. “Miss Leng, can you please show me some basic trust between human beings?” She huffed. After all that defending I just did… and she still doesn’t trust me?
She downed the rest of her drink in one go.
Leng Jinxi was about to say something, but someone came to fetch her—apparently a business associate of the Leng family. She glanced at Lin Bie, hesitating, then turned to leave.
Left alone, Lin Bie sat back and began mentally reviewing her plans.
Step one: raise Lin Qingsi’s affection score. That could be done by correcting her impression of Lin Bie.
Step two: Su Nian’s score could be increased by becoming good friends.
No romantic complications—just good rapport.
Leng Jinxi, though… The original host’s notes were clearly unreliable. If they could be friends, great. If not—keep a healthy distance. The ultimate goal was still to go home.
Her planning was going great—until she saw a small group heading her way.
She frowned. What now? The original host’s shady friends again?
Sure enough, the leader of the group started talking.
“Lin Bie! Haven’t seen you at the club lately. Don’t tell me you really went all virtuous and domestic like Gu Ban said? Playing the role of a model Alpha now?”
Lin Bie’s brow twitched. Yep. Definitely the original host’s people.
How did the original host know so many people?
She frowned. “Obviously. I’m engaged now. Let’s leave all those stupid things in the past, shall we?”
That triggered some whispering among the group. The leading Alpha frowned, glanced at a few Omegas nearby who were clearly hoping to chat with Lin Bie, and tested the waters.
“C’mon, you don’t need to keep up the act with us. I know who you really are. Look—these girls would love to get to know you. Let’s hit the club after this, just like old times. You were really into that new singer last time, remember?”
Wow, Lin Bie thought. The host’s reputation really was garbage.
And even at her own engagement party, there were still people trying to cozy up to her for power.
Who knows how many bad ideas this so-called friend had poisoned the original with?
She stood up, face dark, and locked eyes with the Alpha. “If Gu Ban told you about my changes, she should’ve also told you how I treated her after. So let me make this very clear: I’m not that same scumbag. I love my wife, and there will be no one else. Stop looking for me.”
The Alpha looked startled but didn’t give up. “You sure? These girls really wanted to meet you. And the club—remember how much you liked that singer?”
Lin Bie sneered. “I’m engaged. I have a wife. We love each other very much. If you try to come between us, I will know what you’re up to.”
Seeing the Alpha hesitate, she was certain now—this girl had definitely done something shady behind the original host’s back.
She let out a cold laugh and swept her sharp Alpha gaze over them. The pressure made the others instinctively bow their heads, no longer daring to speak.
Lin Bie smiled, calm and cruel. “I’m going to find my wife now. She’s shy. Gets scared when I’m not around. So excuse me.”
With that, she strode away and made her way to where Lin Qingsi and Leng Jinxi had just noticed the commotion.
Without hesitation, she reached out and grasped Leng Jinxi’s hand.
“Let’s go, wifey.”
