- Chapter 2 - Hold Me If You're Scared
“Chi Yang, whether you believe me or not, what happened yesterday wasn’t my intention.”
Pei Jiuyao lowered her gaze, thinking back on her condition the night before, and murmured, “I think someone drugged me.”
“Drugged you?” Chi Yang clutched the bedsheet tightly in her hands, lips curled in a cold sneer. “Aren’t you the one always doing the drugging, Pei Jiuyao?”
Though she had differentiated into an Omega, Chi Yang had always been cautious—especially since she wasn’t currently in heat.
She only had a small drink during last night’s business dinner, yet woke up in heat, in Pei Jiuyao’s bed. How could she not be suspicious?
Pei Jiuyao flinched at the murderous look in Chi Yang’s reddened eyes.
If there had been anything remotely sharp nearby, Chi Yang probably would’ve stabbed her already.
Jiuyao nudged the phone Chi Yang had thrown at her further back with her foot and, realizing she had no defense, lowered her head and mumbled an apology. “I’m sorry. No matter what, it was my fault. Are you feeling okay? Anywhere hurt?”
Chi Yang didn’t reply.
Pei Jiuyao cautiously raised her head to gauge her expression, only to have her eyes involuntarily land on Chi Yang’s exposed collarbone. Her fair skin shimmered like silver under the morning light.
Jiuyao froze for a moment, then awkwardly offered, “Want me to get you some clothes?”
Chi Yang’s white chiffon dress had been completely torn to shreds last night—by her own hands, no less. She’d been so eager then, and now she was furious enough to kill.
That little vixen had transformed into a cold, untouchable beauty. Pei Jiuyao was completely thrown off.
But then again—
Just thinking about the original Pei Jiuyao’s infamous past made her instinctively sympathize with Chi Yang—even though Jiuyao’s memories hadn’t fully returned yet.
As fragments flooded in, Pei Jiuyao remembered that this villa was one of the original host’s properties. It wasn’t often used for living—more like for parties or… entertaining different Omegas overnight.
Unfortunately, the original Pei Jiuyao had a gambling addiction and eventually sold the place to pay off debts.
Rummaging through the closet, Jiuyao grabbed a shirt and a pair of soft lounge pants, handing them to Chi Yang with a guilty expression. “Sorry, there aren’t any skirts. These pants might be a bit long on you.”
Chi Yang’s brows twitched slightly. She stared at Pei Jiuyao, surprise flickering in her eyes.
From what she knew, Pei Jiuyao had countless bed partners and was definitely not the kind to care after the fact—let alone apologize.
Yet here she was, not only apologizing but also offering clean clothes and speaking gently.
When had Pei Jiuyao ever looked at her like this?
Hadn’t she always hated her?
Still, the memory of last night left Chi Yang cold-faced and guarded.
She refused to believe Pei Jiuyao had nothing to do with it.
Snatching the clothes, she quickly pulled them under the blanket.
Her pale brown eyes—like misty glass marbles—stared coldly at Jiuyao. Her lips parted slightly as she said icily, “Why are you still standing here?”
“…Oh.” Pei Jiuyao blinked, picked up her phone from the floor, and quietly left, closing the door behind her.
She sat on the sofa and pressed the power button on her phone—completely dead.
A copy of the Classic of Mountains and Seas lay on the table. Flipping through it out of boredom, Pei Jiuyao was surprised to find she couldn’t recognize half the characters.
That didn’t make sense.
Despite being an actress, she had graduated from a top university with a degree in Chinese literature—non-acting major. Even if she was rusty, she shouldn’t be this illiterate…
Was her brain still fuzzy?
She put the book down and knocked on her forehead a couple of times. A sharp pain buzzed through her skull, making her wince.
Suddenly, a loud thud came from the bedroom, followed by Chi Yang’s soft groan.
Pei Jiuyao shot up and rushed back in. She opened the door to find Chi Yang kneeling on the floor, tangled in the long pant legs.
Quickly helping her up, Jiuyao chuckled, “I did say they would be too long. You should’ve been more careful.”
Chi Yang glared at her with a face full of resentment.
Jiuyao instantly stopped smiling and asked gently, “Can I help you up?”
She politely supported Chi Yang’s arm and carefully helped her to her feet.
Chi Yang tried to shake her off, but Jiuyao coaxed softly, “Now’s not the time to act tough.”
“You said… someone drugged you?” Chi Yang asked, voice still cold as ice while leaning against her arm.
Pei Jiuyao hummed in agreement, not daring to move.
She was half a head taller than Chi Yang and had a broader frame.
Her oversized shirt and pants looked loose and fragile on Chi Yang—almost heartbreakingly delicate.
When Jiuyao let go, Chi Yang stumbled forward unsteadily.
Just as Jiuyao reached out to catch her, Chi Yang pushed her away on instinct. But instead of pushing Jiuyao back, she staggered and collapsed into her arms.
Chi Yang’s breathing instantly faltered. The room still reeked of the thick scent of pheromones.
There had already been a temporary mark last night—she shouldn’t be this uncomfortable now. But why did it feel like she was entering heat again?
She gasped lightly, her expression suddenly awkward, then bit her molars hard.
She tried to push Pei Jiuyao away, but her hand landed weakly on her shoulder.
Jiuyao noticed the blush creeping back onto Chi Yang’s cheeks.
Her once fierce, dagger-like gaze had softened with red tint, filled with watery confusion, looking at Jiuyao like a helpless, lost kitten.
Pei Jiuyao’s breath caught. She asked in a panic, “Chi Yang, are you okay? What’s wrong?”
Chi Yang bit her lip. “Get out. Don’t touch me…”
Jiuyao gently placed the back of her hand against Chi Yang’s forehead. She shuddered violently.
“You’ve got a fever,” Jiuyao said, frowning. “We need to go to the hospital.”
As she moved to pick her up, Chi Yang repeated “hospital” under her breath, then suddenly shoved Jiuyao away and crawled toward the bed.
“What are you afraid of? I’m not going to eat you!” Jiuyao snapped, raising her voice.
Chi Yang trembled. Her eyes turned red, and she whispered, “You yelled at me…”
A second ago, she was a frosty beauty who wanted to stab Jiuyao. Now she looked like a frightened little fox.
Pei Jiuyao sighed. What could she do? Chi Yang was sick—possibly because of her.
She knelt down beside her and coaxed gently, “What happened last night was wrong, but I swear I meant no harm. You’re sick. Let’s go to the hospital, okay?”
“No hospital.” Chi Yang said.
Chi Yang’s voice turned sticky, her ears glowing red. Her fingers gently scratched at the bedsheet.
Jiuyao pressed her lips together.
Why did she seem so much like a small animal? She really wanted to scoop her up and take her home.
Chi Yang lowered her head. “They’ll find out…”
“‘They’”… Right. Chi Yang was also an actress. If reporters spotted her at the hospital, they would be swarmed in minutes.
Jiuyao noticed Chi Yang’s skin growing redder, her gaze increasingly dazed. She said softly, “You must have a private doctor, right? Give me your phone. I’ll call for you.”
“Doctor… doctor…” Chi Yang’s lashes trembled as she gripped her clothes tightly.
After half a minute, she finally pulled out her phone with trembling fingers and handed it over, displaying a contact: Ying Ning.
Jiuyao dialed the number. It was picked up quickly.
“Hello, are you Miss Chi Yang’s private doctor?” she asked.
A calm voice replied after a short pause, “I’m a doctor, yes—but not exactly private.”
“She has a fever,” Jiuyao said. “Could you come here, please?”
The voice turned anxious. “Where are you?”
Just as Jiuyao was about to give the address, Chi Yang grabbed her wrist.
Startled, she handed over the phone. Chi Yang, her voice weak, said, “Ning Ning, we’ll come to you.”
The pheromones in the room were becoming overwhelming. Chi Yang knew if she stayed here any longer, Ying Ning might walk in on another breakdown—or worse, another night with Jiuyao.
Even if Jiuyao didn’t understand her insistence on leaving, after what happened, it was only natural.
Jiuyao bent down to help her up.
Chi Yang struggled, wanting to walk on her own, but Jiuyao caught her around the waist. “I told you not to force it. I’m not going to hurt you.”
Chi Yang’s body was clearly out of control. She clutched at her shirt with trembling fingers, trying her best not to throw herself at Jiuyao.
Her voice was soft but fierce: “Someone like you doesn’t deserve to be trusted.”
“I know,” Jiuyao whispered. “But right now, I’m the only one you can trust.”
Chi Yang’s knees buckled. She couldn’t stand anymore.
Jiuyao swept her into a bridal carry, grabbed the car keys, and headed to the garage.
Chi Yang gasped and bit down on her finger. A thin veil of mist coated her light-colored eyes.
“If you’re scared,” Jiuyao murmured gently, “just hold on to me.”
And with that, she carried her away.
Chi Yang knew she should hate this woman.
But maybe it was because her body was too sensitive, or because she had no clear thoughts in heat… even Pei Jiuyao’s voice sounded dependable.
Her arms felt dependable too.
Chi Yang hated being an Omega.
When she was still an Alpha, even during susceptibility, she could control herself. But now she’d gone through a second differentiation into an Omega… and it just had to be with Pei Jiuyao.
She would rather have been a Beta. Omega instincts always overwhelmed rationality. Just now, being scolded by her marking Alpha made her want to cry.
This humiliating state made her feel utterly ashamed.
She resisted the urge to cling to Jiuyao. She bit down so hard she drew bl00d from her finger.
When Jiuyao gently set her in the passenger seat, Chi Yang instinctively reached out to grab her—but froze midair, retracting her hand stubbornly.
Jiuyao assumed she was simply too proud to ask for help, so she leaned down and ruffled her hair. “Don’t be scared. We’ll be there soon.”
“…Mm,” Chi Yang murmured, curling up in the seat.
Jiuyao got in, fastened her seatbelt, and drove to the address Ying Ning had sent.
