- Chapter 32 - Do What People Do at This Hour
Gulp.
Shen Ran clearly heard himself swallow.
His eyes were fixed on Cheng Yi—not because of emotional tension, but purely because the scene was a visual feast. It was simply too captivating to look away.
Cheng Yi had undone all of his buttons.
Cheng Yi had taken off his shirt!!!
He had only been wearing a shirt—nothing underneath!!!
And… his underwear was gray…!!!
Shen Ran suddenly felt like he was far too inexperienced. From top to bottom, inside and out, he had no idea where to even rest his gaze.
No one had ever told him that Cheng Yi—who always wore the face of a refined scoundrel and looked kind of lean—would actually be so… built once the shirt came off!
Cheng Yi seemed quite pleased with Shen Ran’s dazed expression—somewhat embarrassed yet staring wide-eyed.
That silly, flustered look was far more vivid than the quiet, withdrawn version of Shen Ran who usually followed him around with his head down.
Tossing the shirt aside, Cheng Yi decided to pour a little more fuel on the fire.
“Shen Ran, I’m going to take a shower and then go to bed.”
“You’re still here—don’t tell me you really want to sleep with me?”
It was meant as a provocation. Cheng Yi didn’t actually expect Shen Ran to accept.
He just preferred Shen Ran jumping around to seeing him cry.
But what he didn’t expect was…
“Can I?” Shen Ran looked at him dead-on and nodded. “Alright then.”
…Huh?
This time, Cheng Yi was the one frozen in place.
Cheng Yi narrowed his eyes. “…Shen Ran, are you sure?”
“I’m sure! Since you’re so warmly inviting me, it would be rude of me to refuse!”
Cheng Yi really wanted to ask—since when did that count as a warm invitation?
But the words got stuck somewhere along the way. After a few seconds of silent struggle, Cheng Yi let out a resigned sigh.
“…Fine. We’ll sleep together. I’m taking a shower—you get ready.”
Inside the bathroom, Cheng Yi quietly turned the water all the way to ice cold.
Shen Ran, that clueless fool—how dare he actually agree to share a bedroom with him, and in the middle of the night at that?!
Wasn’t he afraid that Cheng Yi might take advantage of the situation and let something happen—something ambiguous and irreversible?!
Was Shen Ran an idiot? He wasn’t Chen Xu!
What was originally meant to distract Shen Ran had now turned into a test of Cheng Yi’s own self-control.
This was truly… he brought it on himself!
…But wait.
Cheng Yi suddenly had an idea.
A way to still hug Shen Ran tonight, and yet stay calm, collected, and utterly unmoved.
The water from the shower continued to pour down as Cheng Yi slowly lowered his head and solemnly looked at… his other self.
Then, he reached down—
If he completely drained himself of strength, surely he wouldn’t have the energy to do anything out of line, right…?
Three or four rounds would do it. Yes. That should be enough.
An hour and a half later, Cheng Yi emerged from the bathroom drying his hair—only to find that Shen Ran had already brought over the quilt from the guest room.
Right in the center of the bedroom floor was a perfectly neat and rectangular bedding setup.
At that moment, Shen Ran was sitting cross-legged on the floor, hugging a pillow and playing on his phone. When he looked up and saw Cheng Yi, his gaze turned suspicious.
“Cheng Yi, are you sure you’re okay?”
Cheng Yi replied without batting an eye, “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Why? You were in the shower for a whole hour and a half! If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were sleeping in the bathtub while I took your bed!”
“What’s wrong with an hour and a half?” Cheng Yi dropped his robe and pulled out a brand new pair of boxer briefs. “I like to be clean—I wash multiple times. Got a problem with that?”
“No matter how clean you like to be, that’s just— aagh! Cheng Yi, why are you pointing your butt at me?! Are you messing with me?!”
“Would you prefer I turn around and point it the other way? Would that count as transparency between us?”
As he spoke, Cheng Yi made a move to turn.
Shen Ran jumped in fright, face burning red as he covered his eyes and yelped:
“Ahhh! No! Just—just keep your back to me! People… people need a little mystery between them! Being honest doesn’t mean you have to be that honest—never mind, never mind!!!”
He heard Cheng Yi chuckle softly.
“Tch. You’re this shy, and yet you still dared to come over with your blanket like it was nothing. I really don’t know what to do with you.”
Shen Ran angrily lowered his hands, ready to argue.
Little me is very angry!
But just as he put his hands down, he shot them back up again in a panic. “Cheng Yi, why are you still not dressed?! Are you some kind of wild man?!”
“If I’m a wild man, then you’re the monkey I took in and raised in my cave.”
After being tricked twice already, Shen Ran wasn’t about to open his eyes carelessly again.
He pricked up his ears instead—he could hear the sound of the hairdryer, then the closet door opening and closing.
Once he figured Cheng Yi had probably gotten dressed this time, Shen Ran cautiously cracked open one eye.
Cheng Yi stood before him with one hand on his hip, clearly taking his time.
Looking down at him from above.
And yet, there was… a certain strange intimacy to it.
The subtlety of the moment lay in this—
Shen Ran lifted his head just slightly.
He was kneeling on the floor, playing on his phone, while Cheng Yi stood right in front of him.
Just a slight tilt of his head, and he was… face-to-face with Little Cheng Yi through a layer of thin pajama pants.
Uh… very visible, to say the least.
Cheng Yi immediately realized something was off.
Shen Ran’s upturned gaze—innocent, oblivious—looked alarmingly like he was about to—
“Hey,” Cheng Yi suddenly spoke. “Get up.”
“Huh? Why?”
“You. Get in bed. I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“Why?”
Cheng Yi snapped, clearly annoyed, “Why so many questions? I’m giving you the royal treatment and you wanna interrogate me over it?”
Before Shen Ran could speak again, he suddenly felt his collar tighten and his body lift off the ground.
Cheng Yi had grabbed him by the shirt and literally tossed him onto the bed!
So rough! You beast!
Click.
Cheng Yi turned off the lights in one motion, and the bedroom was plunged into deep darkness.
Lying in Cheng Yi’s bed with zero guilt, Shen Ran opened his phone and started scrolling through Moments again, grumbling inwardly:
…Is this some new trend—treating people well by cursing them out first?
He really wanted to know if Cheng Yi’s mouth was laced with poison—like, would kissing him actually kill someone?
Maybe it was because he’d put on his headphones and started listening to NetEase Cloud Music.
Maybe it was because of that post he’d just seen from Ai Ziqing.
Either way, Shen Ran couldn’t fall asleep.
Every time he closed his eyes, images from his newly unearthed childhood memories would flash through his mind.
He kept tossing and turning, but was terrified of disturbing Cheng Yi’s sleep. Every time he shifted positions, he held his breath.
“Alright. You don’t need to be so cautious.”
“! …Cheng Yi, you’re not asleep?” Shen Ran whispered.
“You’re right next to me—how could I sleep? I meant you’re being really loud.”
So he had disturbed him after all?
Just as Shen Ran was beating himself up about it, he suddenly heard the soft rustling of sheets.
A second later, the mattress dipped beside him.
Cheng Yi’s voice came from close by, low and laced with amusement.
“If you really can’t sleep… why don’t we do something a little more appropriate for this hour?”
“Instead of overthinking, wouldn’t it be better if the only thing on your mind… was me?”
“Boss Shen, what do you say?”
