- Chapter 37 - Partial to You
Smooth lines of his legs, the soft dip between them easily within reach—there was a distinct elasticity to that warmth, unmistakably skin.
Nice to touch.
Nice legs.
Those were the only thoughts running through Cheng Yi’s head at that moment.
“…Cheng Yi!”
Shen Ran shot him a side-eye, gritting his teeth. “What are you spacing out for? Hurry up and get the phone! I’m driving!”
Cheng Yi snapped out of it like waking from a dream and finally fished the phone out.
It had been in Shen Ran’s pocket long enough to carry his body heat.
“Who’s calling?” Shen Ran asked.
Cheng Yi glanced at the screen. “A number from K City. It’s not saved. Should I answer?”
“Yeah, go ahead. Might be a client. Just answer for me—I’ll keep my eyes on the road.”
Now given an “important task,” Cheng Yi naturally didn’t hesitate.
He answered the call and brought the phone to his ear—but before he could say a word, a voice came through that caught him off guard.
“Hello, Ranran? It’s me, it’s Chen Xu!”
Chen Xu’s voice was rushed, a little anxious.
Cheng Yi knew who Chen Xu was.
He knew his face—and remembered that carefully crafted, faux-gentle voice.
A bitter taste spread in Cheng Yi’s mouth.
Here he was, literally with his hand in Shen Ran’s pocket, and the guy’s actual boyfriend calls.
Although… Chen Xu didn’t sound quite so composed today. That tone—he sounded kind of desperate.
Shen Ran asked, “Who is it?”
“…Your boyfriend,” Cheng Yi replied.
He didn’t even notice the sourness in his voice as he said those four words.
Shen Ran clicked his tongue. “Wrong. Ex-boyfriend. We’re not together anymore. …Forget it, just put it on speaker.”
Ex-boyfriend.
Ex-boyfriend?
Chen Xu was now Shen Ran’s ex? Since when?!
Still in shock, Cheng Yi tapped on the speaker button. Chen Xu’s voice instantly blared out, frantic and repetitive:
“Ranran, why did you suddenly break up with me? You’re just joking, right? You don’t mean it, do you?”
“I’m not joking,” Shen Ran replied calmly. “And it’s not sudden. Honestly, the signs were there for a while.”
Chen Xu sounded confused. “What do you mean, signs…?”
Shen Ran glanced at the rearview mirror—Cheng Yi was clearly trying to play it cool, but his focused eavesdropping was obvious. Shen Ran stifled a laugh.
“Senior Chen, I always thought going a full week without texting meant mutual ghosting. Guess I was wrong, huh?”
“Ranran, just listen—I’ve really been busy these past few days! Can we talk in person? I’ll come find you right now, wait for me, okay? That’s settled!”
He finished in a rush, then hung up like he was terrified one more second on the line would earn him a solid rejection.
“What a clingy leech. Haunting me like a ghost,” Shen Ran muttered, still driving.
Cheng Yi nodded in agreement and was about to slip the phone back into Shen Ran’s pants pocket—when Shen Ran quickly stopped him.
“Whoa, hold on! No need to put it back in my pocket, alright? Just keep it on you.”
As he said this, Shen Ran subtly pulled his legs a little closer together.
“…Oh.”
Cheng Yi casually slipped the phone into his own pocket instead, pretending to look out the window—though he couldn’t stop the grin spreading uncontrollably across his face.
“Shen Ran.”
“Mm?”
“When did you and that guy… you and Chen Xu… break up?”
“Oh, just this morning. When I went to buy you breakfast. I forgot all about him, and when I remembered, I blocked and deleted him on the spot. Didn’t expect him to take it so hard.”
Cheng Yi paused. “What made you suddenly decide to break up with him?”
When Cheng Yi asked that question, Shen Ran really wanted to scream.
What kind of nonsense was that?!
They’d already kissed like that—multiple times, no less. If he were still calling Chen Xu his “boyfriend” after that, would he even be human?
But of course, he couldn’t just blurt that out.
So Shen Ran took a second to carefully choose his words.
“I just don’t want to be with someone I don’t like anymore. And the more I think about it, the more I realize Chen Xu’s really not a good person. Bad character, you know?
“You think his character’s bad now?” Cheng Yi sounded genuinely surprised. “Weren’t you defending him not too long ago?”
“T-That—! That never happened! You must be remembering it wrong!” Shen Ran clutched the steering wheel tightly, doubling down. “I’ve never said anything good about Chen Xu. If anything, I’ve been trying to stay far, far away from him—haha, heh!”
Still, he couldn’t resist flattering Cheng Yi a little.
“But hey, President Cheng, you’ve got sharp judgment! You saw through him from the start. You warned me! Your insight’s amazing—truly brilliant!”
Cheng Yi’s lips curled into a smug grin. “Shen Ran, that’s the first sensible thing you’ve said in days.”
“?! Excuse me? What do you mean first sensible thing? What about all the other things I’ve said?!”
“Just hot air. This is the first time your words have actually been pleasing to hear.”
Shen Ran: “You little—! If we weren’t on an overpass right now, I’d kindly ask President Cheng to get out of the car!”
…
After parking, the two of them headed upstairs together, then parted ways in the hallway.
You go to your meetings, I’ll go sell my art.
“Hey, Shen Ran!”
Cheng Yi called after him.
“What?”
“That Chen Xu guy said he was coming to see you… Are you actually going to meet him?”
Shen Ran nodded. “Of course. It’s better to make things crystal clear. Otherwise, I’m afraid he’ll keep pestering someone as outstanding as me~”
Seeing Cheng Yi’s furrowed brow ease, Shen Ran smirked to himself.
As if he didn’t already know what was going on in Cheng Yi’s head.
He cared. He obviously cared so much he was dying inside—but just wouldn’t say it. So he had to ask in this roundabout, awkward way.
Oh, he understood. He understood everything~
Happily turning around to head into his gallery, Shen Ran heard Cheng Yi call after him again:
“Come find me for lunch at noon, alright?! Don’t let that guy Chen sweet-talk his way into a lunch date!”
Shen Ran didn’t answer. He just waved his hand behind him—Got it.
And to be fair, ever since he came back to life, all three of his daily meals had somehow ended up with Cheng Yi.
As soon as he stepped into his gallery, Shen Ran was immediately pierced by the unnerving stare of his employee, Xiao Lin.
“Boss. You’re late.”
Shen Ran was feeling a little guilty—but he still tried to play it cool.
“So what if I’m late? I’m the boss. I can’t even be late now?”
Xiao Lin neither agreed nor disagreed. He just subtly jerked his chin toward the gallery entrance and said with heavy implication:
“But President Cheng from next door is also late.”
Shen Ran’s heart skipped a beat, a sense of being caught bubbling in his chest.
“So… so what?”
Xiao Lin sighed deeply, his eyes bloodshot and lifeless after three nights of overtime, staring at him like a dead fish.
“Boss, I heard everything just now. President Cheng personally invited you to lunch.”
