“F*ck! This is so infuriating!” Pei Xiangwan gripped her phone tightly, her face flushed with anger as she typed furiously. Each word seemed propelled by her rage, leaping across the screen with furious speed.
Ji Tiantian leaned closer, her brow furrowing with concern. “Wanwan, we’re idols. Aren’t you worried about getting caught by antis if you keep cursing like this?”
Pei Xiangwan’s slender fingers paused, her voice dripping with disdain. “I’m going to curse! How dare they publish such trash? It must have been written by a pig-brained idiot.”
Song Yuning, sitting on the opposite sofa, heard the commotion and reached out. “Let me see. What’s it called?”
Pei Xiangwan handed her the phone.
Song Yuning glanced at the screen, a cold smirk curling her lips. “‘Love Me Again, Wife’? What kind of ridiculous title is that? It’s clearly melodramatic garbage. And you’re actually reading this?”
Pei Xiangwan snatched back her phone and resumed her furious rant against the author, while simultaneously responding to her teammate. “Tch, the synopsis made it sound like a yuri story—a 渣女 redeeming herself. I just wanted to check it out, but it turned out to be utter trash. Listen, everyone, don’t make the same mistake I did! Don’t fall for the misleading synopsis. And the ending? It was a complete disaster!”
Her teammates chimed in unison, “Don’t bother, we don’t like reading novels anyway. Okay, Wanwan, stop complaining. The concert’s about to start—let’s go.”
“Fine,” Pei Xiangwan relented.
Suddenly, a notification popped up on her phone: Can you save them?
Pei Xiangwan was puzzled. Save them? Is this part of the investigation into the novel? With so many people criticizing the author, surely many would choose to save them!
The moment her index finger tapped “Yes,” a sudden wave of dizziness washed over her. She felt her body lose all support, collapsing limply onto the sofa. Her consciousness began to fade, but she could faintly hear her teammates’ anxious shouts.
“Wanwan!”
“Wanwan, what’s wrong…?”
As the dizzy haze gradually dissipated, her mind cleared. But just then, a hand clapped down on her shoulder, startling Pei Xiangwan. The person beside her was taken aback by her reaction.
“Xiang Wan, what’s wrong? You suddenly stopped moving and didn’t respond when we called you.”
Pei Xiangwan looked at the person before her—a completely unfamiliar face. Even the surroundings were unfamiliar. I was just in the concert’s green room. Where am I now…?
A school?
Shengjing Dance Academy? But she hadn’t graduated from a dance academy. How could this be happening?
“Xiang Wan, aren’t you going yet? This is the dance academy! Aren’t you afraid that annoying Jiang Shiyuan might show up? Let’s go!” Qiao Yanxin said, pulling Pei Xiangwan forward by the arm.
The name sounded so familiar. Her mind raced.
Jiang Shiyuan…
Wasn’t that the uke from Love Me Again, My Wife?! No, no, it couldn’t be. Maybe it was just a coincidence, a common name. But then… could she be the irritable maniac…?
Time to confirm. The irritable maniac only had one friend.
Pei Xiangwan glanced at the person pulling her forward and tugged at her arm. “You’re… you’re Qiao Yanxin?”
Qiao Yanxin frowned slightly, reached out, and placed her hand on Pei Xiangwan’s forehead before moving it to her own.
“No? Did you hit your head on a lamppost while staring at your phone? Who else would I be if not Qiao Yanxin? Unless you’re Qiao Yanxin now?”
Pei Xiangwan pressed on. “Then… Jiang Shiyuan majors in ballet?”
“Isn’t that common knowledge? You two are even neighbors! I really should take you to the hospital to get checked out.” Qiao Yanxin stopped after pulling Pei Xiangwan only a few steps.
“Speak of the devil…”
“Hmm?”
Following Qiao Yanxin’s gaze, she looked ahead. The person’s slightly wavy long hair danced gently in the breeze, and she wore a cream-colored vintage-print cardigan paired with a midi skirt. Even from a distance, she looked stunning! Up close, she must be breathtaking!
Move aside, Jiang Jiang! Mama’s coming! All you渣女, get lost!
Pei Xiangwan shook off Qiao Yanxin’s hand and rushed toward Jiang Shiyuan.
“Hey… you!” Qiao Yanxin couldn’t believe she’d been brushed aside, especially for Jiang Shiyuan. This shouldn’t be happening!
Without hesitation, Pei Xiangwan pulled Jiang Shiyuan into a tight embrace. The sudden intimacy left Jiang Shiyuan flustered, her hands hovering awkwardly in the air.
Wanwan is hugging me.
Qiao Yanxin’s jaw dropped. Where am I? Who am I? What am I seeing?! She glanced at the passersby, their expressions mirroring her own shock. So it’s not just me who’s stunned.
At that moment, a scene from the drama flashed through Pei Xiangwan’s mind: Jiang Shiyuan overhearing intimate sounds from outside the office, peeking through a crack in the door, and the sight of their entangled bodies piercing her eyes.
Tears streamed silently down Jiang Shiyuan’s face, crystal droplets falling like pearls onto the floor, the shattering sound echoing in her ears.
Her own wife and best friend were having an affair, yet she had been kept completely in the dark, like a fool.
After their marriage, her wife had become a completely different person, no longer gentle or considerate. Ning Xuemo had become a stranger to her, and only now did she realize she was a complete scumbag.
In Ning Xuemo’s eyes, Jiang Shiyuan was nothing more than a porcelain doll, something anyone could manipulate, and discard when they grew tired of it.
Desperate, Jiang Shiyuan went to the rooftop. Rain lashed mercilessly against her face, plastering her hair to her cheeks and leaving her face pale and wet.
In that moment, she couldn’t tell if the wetness on her face was from the cold rain or from her anguished tears.
“Love truly brings such pain,” she murmured.
The wind howled, and the sky was shrouded in darkness, devoid of light. Jiang Shiyuan forced a smile, a desolate one, as the piercing pain in her heart numbed her.
In the silent, rainy night, a drenched butterfly fluttered its wings desperately, trying to escape the darkness. Unable to withstand the pressure, it plummeted from mid-air and vanished. The rain turned red.
Pei Xiangwan cursed inwardly: Damn author! Making that scumbag woman go back to college, pursue the female lead again, marry her, and then cheat with her best friend? Just playing the endless loop game, huh?!
So that’s what the choices on my phone meant! I’m going to rewrite this suffocating plot! I’ll find Jiang Jiang a good wife.
If I succeed in saving her, I can go home and ensure Jiang Jiang lives a happy life.
Pei Xiangwan held Jiang Shiyuan tightly, her fingers gently threading through Jiang Shiyuan’s hair. Her voice was softer than ever before. “It’s okay. I’ll protect you.”
Jiang Shiyuan’s eyes rimmed with red as she bit her lower lip, desperately fighting back tears. She cautiously reached out her arms and wrapped them around Pei Xiangwan’s waist, burying her face in Pei Xiangwan’s neck.
This familiar embrace—she had waited a year for it.
She couldn’t understand why their inseparable bond had shattered after entering university. The once warm gaze had turned icy, filled with hatred. She had asked herself countless times what she had done wrong to drive them further apart.
Yet the questions in her heart were like heavy stones tied to her feet, dragging her down to the ocean’s depths, where she gasped for breath and lost all sense of judgment.
Why does Pei Xiangwan hate me?
The other woman had never given her a reason, leaving her to endlessly search for her own faults.
But this was an unsolvable puzzle. A year of groping in the dark had yielded no key to unlock the answer.
Through countless attempts, she had always been drawn to the allure of that bl00d-red, thorny rose, like a dancer on a knife’s edge, recklessly pursuing it even when cut.
Just when she was about to give up, why did Pei Xiangwan draw close again?
Jiang Shiyuan’s pent-up anguish burst forth like a dam breaking, beyond her control. Tears soaked Pei Xiangwan’s clothes.
Through sobs, she managed to choke out, “Why… Pei Xiangwan, do you find this amusing? You told me to leave, and now you say you’ll protect me?”
Sensing Jiang Shiyuan’s struggle to break free from her embrace, Pei Xiangwan lowered her head. “Please don’t fight me,” she murmured.
