- Chapter 30 - Corner of Her Lips
“You don’t need to stand perfectly still. Just move naturally, Jiang Jiang. I’ll capture the shots. This time, I want to create a blurred, ethereal effect.”
Pei Xiangwan directed her effortlessly, as if Jiang Shiyuan instinctively understood her every intention—a connection that felt destined.
“Okay,” Jiang Shiyuan replied obediently, following her instructions.
Several photographic prints lay scattered across the park bench, a chaotic mess left by their owner, who had tossed each shot onto the seat after taking it, creating the disarray. The owner was too preoccupied to tidy up.
“How many more pictures?” Jiang Shiyuan asked softly, her voice so gentle it made Pei Xiangwan want to pinch her cheek.
“Just one more. We’ll be done soon.”
Jiang Shiyuan pressed her hand against Pei Xiangwan’s. “For the last shot, can we take it together?”
She always feared rejection, especially from Pei Xiangwan.
Pei Xiangwan sensed Jiang Shiyuan’s cautiousness and agreed readily.
“Of course! There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you, Jiang Jiang. If you want it and I can make it happen, I’ll say yes. And I’ll always support your choices. More than anything, I want you to be healthy, safe, and happy. You might not believe me now, but I’ll prove it to you.” She gently stroked Jiang Shiyuan’s soft cheek with her fingers.
She would definitely rewrite the ending, ensuring Jiang Shiyuan found her own happiness and pursued what she loved.
These words relentlessly attacked Jiang Shiyuan’s defenses, and as long as Pei Xiangwan continued to treat her with such unwavering kindness, her affection would grow stronger each day. Jiang Shiyuan didn’t know if they would ultimately end up together.
She would inevitably lose her composure, just as she had now. Her rationality had long since vanished, leaving her unable to think, her mind blank and inexplicably filled with a single, overwhelming impulse.
She rose onto her tiptoes, her lips burning like flames as she pressed them against the corner of Pei Xiangwan’s mouth.
The last shred of Jiang Shiyuan’s reason told her it was too soon.
Pei Xiangwan was genuinely stunned, staring at Jiang Shiyuan with wide, bewildered eyes like a dazed chicken.
She imagined she could still feel the lingering warmth and tingling sensation on her lips, as if that soft touch were still there.
“I’m sorry, Wanwan,” Jiang Shiyuan said, deliberately pausing before lowering her head like a child who had done wrong. “I accidentally kissed you on the corner of your mouth. I lost my balance… You’re not mad, are you? If I’ve upset you, then I…”
“It’s okay,” Pei Xiangwan replied, unable to bear seeing the adorable Little Fox so distressed. She reached out and gently ruffled the top of Jiang Shiyuan’s head in reassurance.
Jiang Shiyuan clasped Pei Xiangwan’s hand with both of hers, tilting her head back with an innocent, radiant smile. She guided Pei Xiangwan’s hand to her cheek, fearing the warmth might slip away, her small paws pressing firmly against the back of Pei Xiangwan’s hand.
“You’re so kind, Wanwan.”
Tonight, it felt like there was more than one moon.
Jiang Shiyuan’s infectious smile drew Pei Xiangwan into its warmth, and she found herself smiling too. The green leaves rustled on the branches above, as if laughing along with them.
“But you can’t do this again,” Pei Xiangwan cautioned.
That was too close… This wouldn’t do. It nearly stopped her heart. Besides, this affection should be reserved for the Little Fox’s lover, not her fangirl.
This Little Fox was still a bit naive, causing Pei Xiangwan considerable worry. She feared that if someone showed her a little kindness or offered her a piece of meat, the Little Fox would abandon all caution, snatch the treat, and follow them anywhere.
Innocence was good, of course, but excessive naivety could be dangerous.
“I understand,” Jiang Shiyuan murmured, nuzzling her cheek against Pei Xiangwan’s palm.
The final photo paper completed its task, revealing their faces. In the picture, Jiang Shiyuan smiled gently and gracefully, while Pei Xiangwan leaned down slightly, their cheeks pressed together. The lipstick mark on Pei Xiangwan’s cheek had even made an honorable cameo.
“This…”
Jiang Shiyuan snatched the photo and said quickly, “It’s so pretty! Just give it to me, Wanwan. We hardly have any photos together.” Her voice was so pitiful that Pei Xiangwan couldn’t bear it and reluctantly agreed.
Their relationship had improved, and it was just a kiss on the cheek. Leaving a lipstick mark was perfectly normal.
Convincing herself, Pei Xiangwan walked over to the bench. “Jiang Jiang, these are all yours.”
Jiang Shiyuan tilted her head, looking troubled. All the photos were so beautiful that she couldn’t choose a better one for Pei Xiangwan.
“Wanwan, you always say they’re pretty. Why don’t you take one too?”
Pei Xiangwan pointed at herself. “Can I really?”
It wasn’t some perverse desire; she genuinely wanted to keep a record of her work because the photos were so well-taken. She also wanted to document Jiang Shiyuan’s growth during the remaining time they had together. The Little Fox would continue to mature, eventually transforming into an even more sophisticated version of herself.
Pei Xiangwan chose the very first photo they’d taken. When Jiang Shiyuan asked why she wanted that one, Pei Xiangwan simply said it was pretty, without explaining her real reasons. Jiang Shiyuan didn’t press further.
The garden concealed their unspeakable secrets beneath the pitch-black sky, adorned with decorations that shone brighter than the twinkling lights wrapped around a Christmas tree.
