After Transmigrating, I Became The Heroine’s First Love! - Chapter 38
“Ms. Sheng, can we talk properly?”
Sheng Xing huddled against the door, her only source of security, her body still trembling uncontrollably.
Her white dress failed to conceal her ankles and feet, which were covered in overlapping scars, both old and new. She couldn’t hear the calls from outside, only muttering repeatedly, “No… no.”
Chen Cheng waddled like a penguin toward her boss, Jiang Shiyuan, taking a few steps before stopping.
How can someone radiate cold like a giant refrigerator? she wondered, rubbing her arms before retreating to her original spot.
She whispered, “I told you, she’s been here for days. No matter what I say, she won’t open the door or respond. She just keeps repeating that one phrase.”
Jiang Shiyuan turned to her and said, “Go back and finish that project quickly. I’ll need it within the next few days.”
Chen Cheng snapped to attention, saluted crisply, and said in a controlled voice, “Mission guaranteed.”
She had witnessed the woman inside’s volatile reactions firsthand. Even a slightly raised voice would trigger her into a frenzy, escalating from shouting and throwing things to collapsing in hysterical tears.
“I can help you,” Jiang Shiyuan said calmly. “Qiao Yue is gone. Do you really think Lin Su will spare you if you play dumb? That’s incredibly naive. You know too much. If you’re just going to let Qiao Yue die in disgrace and then join her in death, then pretend I never spoke.”
After a moment of silence, Jiang Shiyuan said, “Goodbye, then.”
She had taken only a few steps when the door cracked open slightly, and a weak voice drifted through the gap.
“Come in.”
The corner of Jiang Shiyuan’s mouth twitched upward for a fleeting moment, then vanished as if it had been an illusion.
She pushed the door open and stepped inside, immediately feeling something crunch under her foot. Looking down, she saw the floor was littered with pills, nearly covering the entire surface.
The dim light struggled to illuminate the room, yet the woman’s white dress seemed to glow brighter than the light itself. She hadn’t closed the window, and the sheer curtains fluttered wildly.
She turned her head, straining to control her voice. “Can you really help me?”
Her white dress swirled with the sheer curtains, allowing slivers of light to pierce through—light that didn’t belong to her, surrounded by grief that knew no end.
The person she was waiting for was even more intangible than air.
Jiang Shiyuan didn’t move forward, standing her ground as she replied, “Of course.”
Sheng Xing laughed at this answer, but tears welled in her eyes, as if she were weeping bl00d. Her eyes burned with pain, as if she might lose her sight at any moment.
Her lips trembled, and her voice broke as she said, “I… I don’t think I have much time left.”
“Trust me, Sheng Xing.”
“How did you know about my relationship with Qiao Yue? And how did you see through my act? Even Lin Su didn’t notice,” Sheng Xing said, each word heavy with sorrow.
“This is my only chance. I don’t know why I trust you, but Yueyue told me to trust you too. I was planning to stay here forever, with Yueyue, until we died together.” As she spoke, she glanced to her right, as if someone were standing beside her.
Jiang Shiyuan pressed her lips together before speaking. “You’re not the type to go mad. As for your relationship, I had someone investigate. Your social media interactions were frequent and intimate, and Lin Su kept coming to see you.”
“Yes… yes.”
Barefoot, Sheng Xing slowly approached Jiang Shiyuan, closing the distance between them.
Jiang Shiyuan finally got a clear look at Sheng Xing’s face. The woman before her was a stark contrast to the photo in the investigation report. Sheng Xing’s face was now pale and gaunt, her cheeks sunken, like a skeleton barely covered by flesh.
The radiant smile that had once lit up her face had vanished with her lost love.
“But I was the first to know Yueyue,” Sheng Xing said with a self-deprecating laugh. “We loved each other. I always believed that if I didn’t give up, Lin Su would be punished. But who would help a tiny ant?”
“You’ve seen the reports, right?” Sheng Xing continued. “They said she committed suicide, dragging Yueyue’s cousin into it too. They tried so hard to prove it wasn’t true, but no one cared. They protested, they made noise, but in the end, it was all suppressed.”
Jiang Shiyuan was furious. She had spent months tracking down the cat abuser, but the culprit had been meticulous, either targeting blind spots in surveillance or areas with broken cameras. It had taken immense effort to uncover a single oversight.
When she finally discovered it was Lin Su, she couldn’t believe it. Lin Su, who claimed to love animals…
But in a way, it was fortunate. Lin Su’s confidence had grown with each undetected act, leading her to appear on camera without any precautions that final time. This made Jiang Shiyuan’s task slightly easier.
Hitting her would be letting Lin Su off too easily, Jiang Shiyuan thought. Putting Lin Su in jail wouldn’t even constitute a crime. Only after extensive investigation did she discover that Lin Su’s cruelty extended far beyond animal abuse.
Helping Sheng Xing wasn’t about punishing Lin Su; it was because Jiang Shiyuan couldn’t stand by and do nothing.
The fire in Jiang Shiyuan’s eyes burned relentlessly. Once she took that final step, it would all be over.
“Dawn will break for you,” Jiang Shiyuan said. “I imagine you don’t want the person who hurt Qiao Yue to continue living a carefree life, do you?”
Sheng Xing’s tears flowed silently, her body trembling uncontrollably. “Yes…” She didn’t know whether to trust the person before her, but fate had left her with no other choice.
So be it, she thought. I’m going to die anyway.
“What do you need me to do?”
The dim light cast a veil over Jiang Shiyuan’s exquisite features, making her appear almost ethereal. A dimple flashed across her cheek, giving her an air of innocent charm.
Little did anyone suspect that beneath this facade lay a cunning fox, skilled at deception. She used her appearance to make others believe she was a docile little rabbit.
“You can…”
“Hello everyone, I’m Sheng Xing. I’m here today to share my story with you. I think I need to be brave one more time, consequences be damned, just one more time.”
Sheng Xing lowered her head, took a deep breath, and looked back at her phone.
“My beloved Qiao Yue and I were together for five years. We thought we would be happy forever, until we got married. But then she met the devil Lin Su, who threatened her to comply with her demands. Qiao Yue refused, broke free from the devil’s grasp, and fled. We’ve been living on the run ever since.”
Her eyes were bloodshot, beyond tears. She had long since cried them dry.
Sheng Xing’s eyes were red, but her face remained pale—even paler than when Jiang Shiyuan had last seen her a few days ago.
Through the transparent glass, they could see everything inside, hearing Sheng Xing’s helpless anger as she spoke.
Chen Cheng felt deep sympathy for Sheng Xing’s ordeal, but she was also curious about how someone who had been acting insane for a week could suddenly appear so normal.
“Boss! She’s faking it!” Chen Cheng whispered incessantly in Jiang Shiyuan’s ear.
“She’s putting on such a convincing act…”
Jiang Shiyuan stared at Sheng Xing’s emaciated figure and said, “If she hadn’t done this, there would be no Sheng Xing left today. Remember to make sure this video reaches as many people as possible.”
“We hid for so long without being found, so we thought that demon Lin Su had probably forgotten we even existed. Qiao Yue and I loved this place; we met and fell in love here. That’s why I brought Qiao Yue back here. But this decision is the biggest regret of my life. I shouldn’t have brought Qiao Yue back! I shouldn’t have done it!”
Sheng Xing’s emotions grew increasingly agitated, her eyes turning even redder as she began pounding the table.
“Lin Su bribed the landlord of Qiao Yue’s apartment building with money and power. She got the key and broke into Qiao Yue’s room in the middle of the night. ‘Happiness Building’? They’re not even afraid of karma! They cowered like turtles when threatened. This was never an accident—it was all Lin Su!”
“May you all rot in hell!”
Seeing Sheng Xing’s extreme agitation, Chen Cheng said worriedly, “This… the boss is too emotionally charged.”
Jiang Shiyuan remained calm. “Let’s wait a little longer.”
Pei Xiangwan rang the doorbell, intending to give Jiang Shiyuan the tie-dyed fox she had made, only to learn that Jiang Shiyuan had already left.
She gazed at the blue-and-white fox in her hand, its eyes deliberately colored brown.
“Why has Little Fox been so busy lately?”
The pitch-black room reeked of disinfectant, a smell Jiang Shiyuan found utterly repulsive.
“My place is a bit…” Lin Su paused, then continued, “Since I love black, all the decor is black.”
Jiang Shiyuan shook her head. “It’s quite beautiful, Sister Lin.”
“Really, Xiao Jiang?” Lin Su sat beside Jiang Shiyuan, deliberately pressing close as if trying to pin her down.
Jiang Shiyuan frowned and shifted slightly away. “Sister Lin, do you have anything to drink? I’m a bit thirsty after walking so far.”
Her innocent smile was almost unbearable for Lin Su. She longed to tame this little white rabbit, imagining how wonderful it would be to hear her beg, tears streaming down her face.
I would never mistreat my little white rabbit.
Lin Su’s smile turned predatory, her gaze burning with the urge to tear away the rabbit’s innocence right then and there.
“Alright, I’ll get you something to drink. Wait here for me.”
Once Lin Su had disappeared into the kitchen, Jiang Shiyuan pulled a tiny, adapter-like device from her pocket. She plugged it into Lin Su’s phone, which was lying on the table, waited silently for a few seconds, then unplugged it and slipped it back into her pocket.
Lin Su then took out her phone.
She tore open a packet and poured its contents into the juice, which quickly dissolved.
“Drink up, Xiao Jiang,” Lin Su said, placing the juice in front of Jiang Shiyuan.
“Aren’t you having any, Sister Lin?” Jiang Shiyuan asked, lowering her gaze to the glass. She slowly reached out.
The doorbell rang, and Lin Su’s face fell. Jiang Shiyuan called out to her.
“Sister Lin, aren’t you going to answer? It sounds like they’re in a hurry. Maybe it’s urgent.”
Lin Su forced a smile. “Alright, I’ll go see.” She stood up and turned her back to Jiang Shiyuan, hiding the change in her expression.
Jiang Shiyuan withdrew her hand. She wouldn’t touch anything that belonged to a beast.
“Who is it?” Lin Su asked, her voice laced with impatience.
There was no response, only the incessant ringing of the doorbell, which made Lin Su’s ears ache. She yanked the door open, but before she could see who it was, she was shoved aside.
“Jiang Jiang!” Pei Xiangwan gasped, out of breath. She had rushed over the moment she received Jiang Shiyuan’s message, just in time.
Her precious Little Fox was still safe.
“Mm-hmm.”
Pei Xiangwan couldn’t shake the feeling that the Little Fox’s eyes were wet and tearful whenever she looked at her, as if she had been bullied. Fury welled up within her, and she glared at Lin Su, shouting, “You cockroach! What did you do to my Jiang Jiang? If she loses even a single strand of hair, I’ll make you bald!”
Lin Su erupted in wild laughter, the sound echoing through the room. She looked up at Pei Xiangwan, her eyes burning with murderous intent.
“Pei Xiangwan, you’re far more amusing than I imagined. You should show some respect—I’m older than you, after all. Besides, what could I possibly do to Xiao Jiang?”
She took slow, deliberate steps toward Pei Xiangwan. “I adore Xiao Jiang. Why would I ever harm her?”
Pei Xiangwan clicked her tongue, warning Lin Su, “You have no right to claim affection for Jiang Jiang. Keep your pathetic tricks to yourself, or you’ll regret it.”
Gripping Jiang Shiyuan’s hand, she deliberately slammed her shoulder into Lin Su as they passed. Lin Su’s brow furrowed, her sharp gaze piercing through them as she clutched her injured shoulder, as if suppressing her inner rage.
“You’re not that much older than me,” Lin Su retorted. “Stop trying to act like some ancient crone. Anyone would think you’re ancient.”
