Chapter 11: You’re Discriminating Based on Appearance
Ye Lingxi quietly dressed and crept to the outer hall of Qingyang Sect. Watching the patrolling disciples leave, she tiptoed to the door and pressed her ear against it. Hearing voices inside, she gently pushed the door open just a crack.
Through that narrow gap, she saw Mo Huaishu absorbing all the magical energy from spirit beads and transferring it to a woman lying on the bed. She was certain that the woman receiving the energy was Bai Luotang.
System: “Host, what are they doing?”
Ye Lingxi whispered, “Can’t you see? She’s transferring the energy from those spirit beads to Bai Luotang.” Mo Huaishu was converting the magic into spiritual power to sustain her life. Ye Lingxi squinted through the crack to keep watching.
System: “What?!”
“In the book, Bai Luotang has always been frail and sickly. She became sect leader only because Mo Huaishu secretly helped her. They’ve known each other since childhood—Bai Luotang is actually her senior sister.”
System: “Scandalous!”
Just as Ye Lingxi was marveling at the juicy details, she accidentally made a noise.
Mo Huaishu immediately shouted, “Who’s there!” and threw an empty bead at the door.
Ye Lingxi was too late to dodge. She fell forward, pushing the door open, landing face-first on the ground with her arms outstretched.
Uh-oh. Busted.
Mo Huaishu’s boots appeared in front of her. As Ye Lingxi slowly looked up, Mo Huaishu’s voice was cold: “You trying to die?”
Ye Lingxi’s eyes widened. That word—“die”—was all too familiar. She’d been thrown into a snake pit at the start, after all.
She forced a laugh, her mind racing. She’d only wanted to confirm her suspicions, not get caught red-handed.
Suddenly, Mo Huaishu summoned her sword and lunged.
“Go die!”
Ye Lingxi’s gaze shifted to the woman on the bed. A weak voice called out: “Ah-Huai, stop! Don’t hurt an innocent person…”
The woman tried to get up. Mo Huaishu paused and ran back to hold Bai Luotang. “Ah-Tang, don’t move.”
Ye Lingxi, sigh in relief, sat up and was about to flee—but stopped when she heard Bai Luotang coughing up bl00d.
System: “Host, what are you doing?!”
Ye Lingxi turned and saw Bai Luotang’s pale face, bl00d at her lips, coughing violently as if she might die any second.
She ran back.
System: “Host!”
Ye Lingxi said, “System, give me the Hundred Herb Spirit!” She demanded the item she’d recently acquired.
System: “But that’s your life-saving item!”
“I know!Just give it to me!”
Ye Lingxi strode over, plucked a petal from the Hundred Herb Spirit, and under Mo Huaishu’s glare—stuffed it into Bai Luotang’s mouth, pressing her hands over her lips to make her swallow.
Mo Huaishu slapped her hard. “What are you doing?!”
Ye Lingxi was dazed, her face swelling. She spat bl00d. Mo Huaishu raised her sword again.
Bai Luotang spoke once more: “Ah-Huai!”
Mo Huaishu calmed down, cradled her, and laid her back on the bed. “Ah-Tang!” Seeing her complexion improve and the coughing stop, she turned to Ye Lingxi and shouted, “What did you feed her?!”
Ye Lingxi wiped the bl00d from her lips. “Something that could save her life.”
It was a gamble. And she’d won.
Bai Luotang was her ticket to survival now.
“Ah-Huai,” Bai Luotang held her sleeve, “don’t.”
Mo Huaishu looked thoughtful. She had used spirit beads for years to sustain Bai Luotang, but her condition only worsened. Yet after eating that petal, she improved immediately.
“Someone, Go bring Lan Muxu!”
Ye Lingxi panicked. Why call help when things were better? Why call for help?
“Master!” Ye Lingxi knelt. “Please don’t kill me!”
Mo Huaishu ignored her and ordered, “Bring Lan Muxu.”
“Yes!”
Lan Muxu? Wasn’t she the sect leader of the Hundred Herb Sect? The one who proposed using spirit beads to treat Bai Luotang?
Wait—Mo Huaishu wasn’t going to kill her or toss her into the snake pit?
System: “Host, the snake pit was destroyed by Ji Fuyu.”
Ye Lingxi: “Oh, right. My bad.”
So what was she planning?
Mo Huaishu approached. Ye Lingxi was still kneeling. This scene felt familiar—just like with that demoness before. She rolled her eyes.
Mo Huaishu lifted her chin coldly. “You’re the one with the highest spiritual test score?”
Ye Lingxi broke into a sweat. She nodded. “Master, I’m honored you remember me.” Her swollen face forced a stiff smile.
Mo Huaishu narrowed her eyes, wiped her hand with a handkerchief, and said nothing. She returned to Bai Luotang’s side, gently holding her hand with concern.
Ye Lingxi: “…”
The favoritism was unreal.
Still, not being killed was a win.
Soon, Lan Muxu arrived, startled by the scattered spirit beads and Ye Lingxi’s swollen face.
“Your face?” The petite woman with twin braids and vine accessories looked at her like she was a monster.
Mo Huaishu interrupted, “Junior Sister Lan!”
Lan Muxu turned her attention to Bai Luotang. Ye Lingxi touched her swollen cheek, feeling wronged.
You’re judging me by my looks.
Lan Muxu checked Bai Luotang’s pulse, frowning, then checked again.
Ye Lingxi leaned in curiously.
“Huh?” Lan Muxu looked increasingly puzzled.
Mo Huaishu grew anxious. “What is it? Is she worse?”
Lan Muxu raised her hand to silence her. After a moment, she asked, “Did she eat something?”
Mo Huaishu looked at Ye Lingxi. Lan Muxu followed her gaze.
“I’m sensing signs of the Hundred Herb Spirit.”
“Whatever it was, her pulse is improving,” Lan Muxu said. “It feels like… the Hundred Herb Spirit.”
“The Hundred Herb Spirit?!” Mo Huaishu was shocked. “That flower disappeared a hundred years ago?”
Lan Muxu nodded. “Yes, it vanished from Dragon Tail Mountain a hundred years ago.”
Ye Lingxi: No way… they figured it out already?
“Where did you get it?!” Mo Huaishu demanded.
Ye Lingxi stammered, “I… I…”
Mo Huaishu pointed her sword at her.
Ye Lingxi: Not this again. Can’t she be more original?
“I… I met an old man who gave it to me. He said it could cure all illnesses. I saw White Master coughing bl00d and felt bad, so I gave it to her without thinking. I’m sorry! I deserve punishment!” She bowed again.
Mo Huaishu suddenly became calm. This girl had high spiritual power and genuinely protected Ah-Tang. Maybe she could be trusted during her next retreat.
“Lan Muxu, take her to your place for treatment. If you can’t heal her, don’t let her come back!”
Lan Muxu nodded.
Mo Huaishu turned to Ye Lingxi. “What’s your name?”
She asked my name?
“I… I’m Ye Lingxi.”
“Ye Lingxi? Good. I expect great things from your final assessment. Don’t disappoint me.” With that, she left.
Ye Lingxi finally relaxed.
At least she wasn’t dead.
Lan Muxu called, “Hey, are you coming?”
Ye Lingxi jumped. “Oh, right!” still dazed, to the Hundred Herb Sect.
