Chapter 17: Weapon Upgrade Failed!!!???
That’s it?
I thought it’d be something serious.
This is easy.
That’s it?
Ye Lingxi had been expecting something more complicated. This is easy—I’ll just name a random village outside the city.
“I think… I met him in a village on the outskirts of town,” she said.
“Really?”
Ye Lingxi nodded sincerely. “Yes, really.”
Lan Muxu didn’t respond at first. After a long pause, she called out, “Ting’er!”
Ye Lingxi followed her gaze and saw a graceful girl walk in, dressed a bit differently than the others. Must be Lan Muxu’s top disciple.
Lan Muxu whispered something quietly to her, and she left.
“Now, back to us.” Lan Muxu looked at Ye Lingxi. “What’s wrong? Don’t like the food?”
Ye Lingxi shook her head. “No, I just thought the girl was really pretty and couldn’t help staring a little.”
Clearly a clumsy lie.
“You like her?” Lan Muxu laughed. “If you become my senior disciple, I’ll let you have her.”
What?! Did she hear what she just said? Ye Lingxi smiled awkwardly and stayed silent. Rejecting might offend her. Accepting meant betraying Qingyang Sect, Mo Huaishu, and possibly the demon queen. So… best to stay quiet.
Lan Muxu let it go. “Once you’re done eating, I’ll repair your sword.”
Ye Lingxi breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness that weird conversation ended.
After the meal, they went to a cold and creepy room. Ye Lingxi hugged herself, shivering. How is Lan Muxu not cold?
She sneezed loudly.
Lan Muxu handed her a red bead. “Here, take this.”
Ye Lingxi studied it—Is this a magic orb?
“This is a Fire Pearl I refined. It helps keep warm,” Lan Muxu explained.
So… basically a magical hand warmer. But effective. Ye Lingxi happily rubbed it against her cheek.
Lan Muxu smiled. “Let’s go.”
Curious, Ye Lingxi asked, “Shishu, where are we going?”
“You’ll see.”
Why so mysterious… she thought.
Lan Muxu traced symbols on a wall with spiritual energy, and it opened into a hidden room.
Ye Lingxi lit up. Her secret herb lab! I remember now—it’s packed with rare herbs!
Even though she knew what to expect, the massive space still amazed her. She walked in wide-eyed. So incredible.
Lan Muxu, still smiling, passed by her and grabbed a few items.
“Stop gawking and come here.”
Ye Lingxi bounced over. “Need something, Shishu?”
“Your sword.” Without hesitation, Ye Lingxi handed over her broken blade.
Lan Muxu infused her spiritual power into some herbs and fused them into the sword.
Ye Lingxi watched as green energy surrounded it and sank into the blade. The sword slowly floated into the air and began to spin.
Excitement bubbled up in her. Maybe my sword will finally become something cool. I might not be strong yet, but at least my sword can help in the meantime.
But as the blade spun, something felt off—it was headed straight for her!
“Hey, hey! Don’t come any closer!” she shouted, bolting. The sword followed her everywhere.
Lan Muxu tried to control it but was thrown backward. “Shishu, help me!” Ye Lingxi cried, dodging frantically.
Lan Muxu stood up and tried again—same result. Ye Lingxi saw her get flung several meters.
Her eyes sharpened. Just as the sword was about to strike, she dodged. The blade shot into a wooden post and finally stopped.
Clutching her chest, she panted. “Still alive… barely.” She rushed to help Lan Muxu. “Are you okay, Shishu?”
Lan Muxu held her chest, still shaken.
“Are you injured?” Ye Lingxi asked worriedly. Can’t have anything happen to one of my backups.
Lan Muxu raised her hand calmly. “I’m fine.” Then she asked, “Where exactly did you find that sword?”
I can’t say I picked it up near the Moon Deity’s statue on Dragon Head Mountain… they’d definitely want to go back there.
“I… forgot. It’s been a long time,” she said.
Lan Muxu looked serious. “That sword seems to hate being touched by others.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
Lan Muxu summoned the sword again with her energy and examined it. “These black bumps are black rock, alright. And there’s a crack—it’s dull and lifeless.”
She sighed and returned the sword.
Ye Lingxi stared at the worn blade. “What does that mean?”
“It means only you can use this sword. If someone else tries, it’ll react violently.”
Ye Lingxi tilted her head. Still confused.
“Remember what I told you this morning?” Lan Muxu asked.
Ye Lingxi blinked. “Did you?”
Lan Muxu said gently, “I told you: every weapon has a spirit.”
Ye Lingxi finally remembered. “But what does that have to do with no one else being able to touch it?”
“It’s everything,” Lan Muxu smiled. She summoned her Immortal Vine Whip. “Here, try holding it.”
“Me?” Ye Lingxi pointed to herself.
Lan Muxu nodded. “Yes, you.”
As soon as Ye Lingxi took the whip, pain shot through her hand. “Ow!” She dropped it.
Lan Muxu picked it up calmly. “That’s what I meant by spiritual recognition.”
Ye Lingxi started to understand. “So… you’re saying…”
“When a weapon recognizes its master, it’ll reject anyone else.”
Ye Lingxi’s eyes widened. That reminded her of her spiritual sense. No wonder the demon queen got hurt touching my hand…
But then… why can’t I get into my own spiritual realm?
“I understand now,” she said softly, staring at her broken sword, lost in thought.
