Chapter 27: I Want To Get to Know Her
Ye Lingxi woke up shivering, sneezing nonstop. “Achoo!”
She had caught a cold.
Trembling, she muttered, “D#mn it, that demon queen stole all my blankets and now I’m sick.”
She grumbled for a while, but no one responded. Hugging herself, she rubbed her arms to stay warm. “Achoo!” Another sneeze.
Lan Mushu walked in. “Oh dear, what happened to you?” She waved her hand in front of Ye Lingxi’s nose.
Sniffling, Ye Lingxi replied, “I’m fine.” But before she could finish, she sneezed again—this time with snot bubbling out.
Lan Mushu grimaced. “You call that fine? You’re dripping.”
“Maybe I got cold last night,” she said, though in her heart she was cursing Ji Fuyu endlessly.
“Is that so?” Lan Mushu sat beside her. “Xiao Xi…”
Ye Lingxi suddenly felt a bad vibe. Lan Mushu placed a hand on her shoulder.
She flinched. “Aunt Lan, is something wrong?”
“You’re sharp as ever. Yes, I do need your help.”
Obviously. You’re touching me and talking weird—of course you want something. If you wanted to kill me, you’d have done it already.
“What is it, Aunt Lan?”
Lan Mushu gently draped her cloak over Ye Lingxi. “I just wanted to ask… do you still have any Bai Ling Grass?”
“Huh?” Ye Lingxi was caught off guard.
Why is she asking for that all of a sudden?
Seeing her hesitation, Lan Mushu continued, “I sent people to find the person you mentioned, but they couldn’t. So I thought I’d ask if you had any left.”
Ye Lingxi licked her lips. Of course they couldn’t find them—I made that person up. Though… that white-haired elder… no, it can’t be. That’d be too much of a coincidence.
“I… I don’t have any…”
Lan Mushu’s eyes flickered. She had sent people to search for the person Ye Lingxi mentioned but found nothing. She wasn’t sure if the person was gone or just elsewhere. Either way, she hoped to get a piece of Bai Ling Grass to see if it could be cultivated again.
A hundred years ago, her senior brother took all of Baicao Sect’s Bai Ling Grass and vanished. She’d hoped to find him and ask why. Now, her only hope was Ye Lingxi.
“Xiao Xi, I’m sure you do,” she said, clinging to the blindfolded girl. “Your uncle said you only used one petal. The rest should still be intact, right?”
Ye Lingxi: Damn! How does she know that?
“Aunt Lan, your sources are really something,” she muttered. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have shown it so easily.
Sensing a chance, Lan Mushu pressed on. “So? Do you still have it?”
Ye Lingxi turned away, unwilling to answer. Bai Ling Grass was her emergency lifeline—she wasn’t about to give it up.
“Xiao Xi!” Lan Muxu grabbed her arm. “You can’t just ignore me.”
It’s mine. I have the right to say no.
“If you give me one petal, I’ll let you choose any herb from Baicao Sect’s stores.”
Ye Lingxi’s ears perked up. Did I hear that right? She said I could pick any herb?
Trading one life-saving petal for a whole stock of healing herbs… not a bad deal. Especially since she didn’t know what injuries might come next. And Lan Mushu had healed her eyes.
After a long pause, she finally responded, “Are you serious?”
“Absolutely!” Lan Mushu placed a hand on her neck. “Give me one petal, and we’ll be like sisters. You can come to me for anything.” Her smile was starting to crack.
“You mean I can pick any herb I want?” Ye Lingxi brushed her hand away, serious now.
Lan Muxu: “…”
“I already said it—of course it’s true!” she pouted. “You only care about the herbs, huh?”
“Fine. I’ll give you one.”
Lan Muxu lit up. “Wonderful!”
She held out her hand, waiting. But Ye Lingxi didn’t move.
“Well? Where’s the grass?” Her smile froze.
Ye Lingxi replied, “I’ll give it to you later.”
“Why?” Lan Mushu frowned.
“I… left it with my sword spirit. But it’s not talking to me right now…” She pointed to where she remembered the system had gone.
Lan Mushu looked but saw nothing. She began searching for the broken sword.
“I’m not lying.”
As she spoke, Lan Mushu picked up the sword and tried to open it. It snapped shut again. She flinched and tried again—same result.
“Told you,” Ye Lingxi said, hearing the sound.
Lan Mushu was stunned. “When did you get a sword spirit?”
“During the final trial.”
She chuckled. “Didn’t expect that. Your sword has a spirit.”
“What do you mean? Didn’t you say all swords have spiritual energy?”
“I did, but actual sword spirits are extremely rare.” She examined the sword again.
“You don’t have one?” Ye Lingxi asked.
Lan Mushu looked at her blankly. “No.”
Whoa. She doesn’t have one? Then again, I don’t remember anyone else in the book having one—except Mo Huaishu, and hers was a snake.
Speaking of snakes, she suddenly remembered the snake pit. Ji Fuyu was sealed there. Mo Huaishu might not even know that.
She wanted to learn more about Ji Fuyu—especially why she had that “thing.”
“Do you know Ji Fuyu?” Ye Lingxi asked bluntly.
Lan Mushu repeated the name, puzzled. “Ji Fuyu?”
Ye Lingxi nodded. “Yeah. Ever heard of her?”
“Why are you asking?”
“I heard Master got a heavy sword that used to belong to her.”
Lan Mushu hesitated. “I’ve heard of her… but not much.”
“Tell me everything,” Ye Lingxi urged.
“Well, since you’re giving me Bai Ling Grass, I suppose I can share.” She sat down and began.
“I only know what I’ve heard.”
Ye Lingxi nodded.
“When I was little, the elders said Ji Fuyu was a true demon queen—killed anyone she saw, even her own kind.”
Ye Lingxi agreed. She did say she wanted to eat that mist. Whether she did or not, I don’t know.
“She was born of heaven and earth. Whether she became a demon or a celestial was up to her. When she was still an egg, the Moon God found her and tried to raise her. No one knows why she turned to darkness. Some say she was born a demon and could never become a celestial.”
“And then?” Ye Lingxi leaned in.
“She lost control and became a demon. The Moon God sealed her away. Her body became the Long Mountain Range, and the four great sects used it as a ward.”
So that’s how it was.
“Do you know where she was sealed?”
“Of course. In the Snake Pit. She eventually broke free and went to the statue built to honor the Moon God. That statue held the last trace of the Moon God’s divine sense and guarded her heavy sword. Your master defeated her in one strike when she awakened.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
But she revived—and became my boss.
“The Moon God sacrificed herself to seal her, and now your master beat her in one move? That doesn’t add up.”
Of course it doesn’t.
“Well, if she had just awakened, maybe it’s possible.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
You clearly don’t know she’s a phoenix. And phoenixes don’t die—they’re reborn. Just look at Ji Fuyu, alive and well.
“But why does she want to rule all three realms?”
That was what Ye Lingxi really wanted to know. She could’ve become a god—why choose to be a demon? And the woman in her dream must’ve been the Moon God.
“I’m not sure. Maybe she went mad from cultivating too hard.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
She didn’t buy it. After spending time with Ji Fuyu, she could tell—this wasn’t someone who’d lose control from a failed cultivation. She even helped awaken Ye Lingxi’s divine sense. There had to be more to the story.
“Is she male or female?”
Lan Mushu burst out laughing. “Of course she’s female! What are you thinking?”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
“Nothing. Just curious.”
