Chapter 28: “Are You Disgusted by Me?”
Ye Lingxi had learned a rough outline of the demon queen’s past, but the details of her origins were still unclear. She hoped Ji Fuyu wasn’t truly the way others described her—because deep down, she didn’t believe she was.
Two days had passed, and the system was still sulking inside the broken sword, refusing to come out.
“If you keep this up, I’m really going to get mad!” Ye Lingxi threatened.
Spirit Cat: Apologize first.
Ye Lingxi: “…”
“Hey, you were the one who said it—I just agreed.”
Spirit Cat: No apology, no coming out.
Ye Lingxi was speechless. “Fine! Stay in there! Don’t blame me if I file a complaint!” She tossed the sword to the floor.
Still no response.
Ye Lingxi: “…”
Is it really serious this time? Maybe I should apologize. It did go through a lot just to get back to me.
“Alright, alright. I’m sorry.” She swallowed her pride.
Spirit Cat: Not sincere enough.
Ye Lingxi: “…”
So picky.
“I’m sorry, my dearest system.” She crouched down and picked up the sword.
The spirit cat immediately flew out. Spirit Cat: I’ll forgive you this once.
Ye Lingxi wanted to strangle it—if only she could see.
Spirit Cat: Host, what do you need?
“I need the Bai Ling Grass.”
Spirit Cat: What did you just say?
“I said I need the Bai Ling Grass!”
Spirit Cat: But I told you before—that’s your emergency healing item.
“I know.”
Spirit Cat: Then why are you giving it away? You already used one petal, and not even for yourself.
Ye Lingxi turned her head. “I know. But giving away two petals could secure me a better storyline. Isn’t that worth it if it helps me survive to the finale?”
Spirit Cat: I can’t argue with you. It’s your choice—I won’t interfere.
A petal of Bai Ling Grass appeared in her palm.
Spirit Cat: You still have three free resurrection chances left.
Ye Lingxi clutched the petal tightly. “I know.” She turned and tucked it away, waiting for Lan Mushu to come find her.
Spirit Cat: Host, think carefully.
Ye Lingxi paused, then said, “I’ve already decided. You said I still have three chances, right?”
Spirit Cat: Alright then.
That evening, Lan Mushu arrived with a table full of rare herbs and several plates of delicious pastries.
“These are for you. Once your eyes recover, let me know if you need anything else,” she said, clearly pleased.
Ye Lingxi nodded. “Okay.”
“I’ll go now and study these,” Lan Mushu added.
“Go ahead.”
As soon as she left, the spirit cat popped out. Spirit Cat: Host, these herbs are really valuable—just a few tiers below Bai Ling Grass. Its eyes sparkled.
Ye Lingxi smiled. “If even you say so, then I didn’t lose out.”
Spirit Cat: I’ll store them for you. If you need them, I’ll bring them out.
“Good.”
“What’s good?” Ji Fuyu suddenly flew in as a small black-and-red phoenix, transformed into her human form in a puff of smoke, and landed with energy.
The spirit cat panicked and dove back into the sword. Spirit Cat: Host, I’m out!
“Hey! Why are you running? She’s not going to eat you!” Ye Lingxi shouted, though she was cursing inside.
Damn it, why leave me alone?
“Master,” Ye Lingxi quickly switched to a cheerful tone.
Ji Fuyu’s gaze landed on the pastries. “Did you prepare these for me?” She picked one up.
Ye Lingxi was confused. “What?”
She held up the pastry. “These. Weren’t they for me?” Her red eyes narrowed, and the pastry was already squished in her hand.
Oh, she meant the pastries.
“Yes, they’re for you,” Ye Lingxi said quickly. If these can improve her mood, then thank you, Lan Mushu. That petal was totally worth it.
Ji Fuyu’s expression softened. She took a bite of the squished pastry. “It’s sweet.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
Of course it is.
“Do you like it?” she asked.
Ji Fuyu’s eyes sparkled as she stared at her. “Mm.”
“What?” Ye Lingxi didn’t catch it.
“I said… I like it…” Her voice was so soft that Ye Lingxi had to ask again.
“Sorry, I still didn’t hear.”
For some reason, Ji Fuyu couldn’t say it louder. In the end, she leaned in and whispered in her ear, “I said the pastry is delicious. I really like it.” She licked her lips. “Did you hear me this time?”
The warm breath tickled Ye Lingxi’s ear. She stepped back, covering her ear. “I… I heard you.”
Why get so close? I’m not deaf.
Ji Fuyu smirked at her flushed face, then grabbed another pastry and stuffed it in her mouth, washing it down with tea straight from the pot.
“Ahh, refreshing!”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
She’s acting like a rowdy man.
“Can’t you be a little more ladylike?”
“Are you disgusted by me?” Ji Fuyu’s defiant tone left Ye Lingxi speechless.
“No.”
Ji Fuyu circled her. “You talk like you’re some kind of lady.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
She couldn’t argue. “At least I’m better than you,” she mumbled.
“What was that? I didn’t hear you!”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
Seriously? Now I’m the one with no confidence?
“I said you’re amazing.”
Ji Fuyu’s nose lifted proudly. “Of course I am.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
I was just flattering you. Can’t believe you bought it.
She shook her head.
“Why are you shaking your head?”
Ji Fuyu caught the motion.
Ye Lingxi, still blindfolded, hadn’t even realized she was being watched. “My neck hurts,” she said, rubbing it. “I think I caught a cold.”
Suddenly, Ji Fuyu jumped down, set the teapot aside, and before Ye Lingxi could react, she was tucked into bed with a blanket.
“What are you doing?” Ye Lingxi was stunned and tried to remove the blanket.
Ji Fuyu pressed it down. “Stay warm and rest.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
And whose fault is it that I’m sick?
She gave up and lay back down. But then Ji Fuyu shouted again.
“Whose is this?” She had found a green cloak on the bed and held it up to Ye Lingxi’s face.
Ye Lingxi couldn’t see, but she reached out and felt the soft fabric. “Oh, that? Aunt Lan gave it to me.”
Ji Fuyu was furious. “Give it to me!” She stood up, ready to throw it away.
“Hey! Don’t toss it! It’s really warm!” Ye Lingxi jumped out of bed to stop her.
Ji Fuyu stormed off, biting her lip. “You like it that much?”
Ye Lingxi snatched it back. “It’s not about liking it—it’s just warm. Try it yourself.” She threw it over Ji Fuyu, but since she couldn’t see, it landed on her head.
“Well? Isn’t it warm?” Ye Lingxi asked proudly, unaware of her mistake.
Ji Fuyu: “…”
Her fingers curled into a fist. She stared at Ye Lingxi’s smiling face, her nails digging into her palm. Her fury erupted like a volcano. “Ye Lingxi!”
Hearing her full name, Ye Lingxi panicked. “W-What’s wrong?”
Ji Fuyu yanked the cloak off her head and threw it to the ground. She stepped closer, jabbing a long fingernail into Ye Lingxi’s shoulder—just enough to sting.
“Ye Lingxi! Have I been too soft on you lately? Are you getting too bold?!”
Ye Lingxi winced and shrank back. “No…”
