After Transmigrating into a Book as a Cannon Fodder Character, The System Turned out to be Completely Unreliable! - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Golden Eyes?!
“No?” Ji Fuyu let out a cold laugh. “No, and yet you don’t even call me ‘Master’ anymore? That’s your idea of ‘no’?”
Uh…
It wasn’t that Ye Lingxi didn’t want to say it—she just didn’t want to say it.
“I was wrong,” she admitted immediately, dropping to her knees.
The scene reminded Ji Fuyu of the first time they met. She froze for a moment, then closed her eyes and reopened them. “I won’t argue with a patient. Makes me look petty.”
Ye Lingxi: You are petty, though.
This demon queen was seriously unpredictable.
“Get up.”
Ye Lingxi didn’t move.
Ji Fuyu frowned. “I told you to get up. Why are you still kneeling? Do you like it that much?”
“I…” Ye Lingxi touched her ankle. She’d knelt too quickly and cramped her foot. “My ankle…”
“So troublesome.” Without another word, Ji Fuyu scooped her up and placed her on the bed. “I told you to rest, and you’re still running around.”
Ye Lingxi: You’re the one who tried to throw away the cloak in the first place.
Ji Fuyu gently tucked her in. “Don’t get up without my permission.”
“Okay, I got it.” Ye Lingxi turned her head and accidentally brushed Ji Fuyu’s face.
Startled, Ji Fuyu jumped back several steps, covering half her face. “Y-You… what are you doing?!”
Ye Lingxi looked innocent. “It was an accident. Why are you so dramatic?”
“You!”
“We’re both women. What’s the big deal about a little touch? It’s not like you lost a piece of flesh.”
Ji Fuyu’s ears turned red. She flailed awkwardly, completely flustered.
“You’re getting more and more out of line!”
Ye Lingxi: “???????????”
“What are you even talking about?” She found it ridiculous and lay down to sleep.
Ji Fuyu raised her hand to strike but couldn’t bring herself to do it. Her arm trembled in the air before she sighed and lowered it.
Ye Lingxi heard her heavy breathing. It was just a little touch. Why is she so mad? I didn’t even say anything, and she’s the one sulking.
Hmph! No way I’m apologizing.
“You…” Ji Fuyu started to speak but stopped. She fell silent. Ye Lingxi assumed she had left and rolled over.
But Ji Fuyu was still there, facing her. Ye Lingxi muttered happily, “Finally gone.”
Ji Fuyu heard everything.
“That annoying woman is always angry. What’s there to be mad about?” Ye Lingxi sat up. “System, don’t you think so?”
The system, still hiding in the sword, didn’t dare come out. She’s saying this right in front of Ji Fuyu? She’s asking for it.
“System! System!” Ye Lingxi called. “Don’t think you can ignore me just because I can’t see you.”
Spirit Cat: “…”
Her rambling pushed Ji Fuyu over the edge. She slammed the table. The loud bang startled Ye Lingxi.
“System, what are you doing now?!”
Inside the sword, the system begged her to stop talking.
Ye Lingxi got up and groped around until she touched someone’s arm. She followed it up—hair? Earrings?
Oh crap!
It was the demon queen. She hadn’t left.
Ye Lingxi instinctively backed away and fell to the floor. Ji Fuyu, seething, growled, “Am I really that unlikable to you?” Her voice was low and biting.
Ye Lingxi shook her head. “No! No! You’re the best!”
Ji Fuyu crouched down and grabbed her by the neck. “Ye Lingxi, I’ve been too lenient with you. If it weren’t for me, you’d already be—”
“Be what?” Ye Lingxi gasped, struggling to breathe.
Ji Fuyu’s red eyes glowed brighter. Just as she was about to choke her, she stopped and pulled back. “If you don’t like me, why do you keep getting close to me?” Her voice trembled with hurt.
“I…”
“You’re just like the others. You approached me with an agenda, didn’t you?”
Ye Lingxi: Well… I did trigger her hidden storyline and wanted to cling to her for protection. That’s it. Nothing more.
“I…”
“Don’t say another word! I don’t want to hear it!”
Ye Lingxi: I haven’t even said anything yet.
“I don’t need you. I can reclaim what’s mine on my own!” Ji Fuyu huffed and stormed out.
She vanished without a trace. Ye Lingxi sat on the cold floor, rubbing her sore neck. The spirit cat finally emerged.
Spirit Cat: “Host…”
“Now you show up?!”
Spirit Cat: I didn’t want to hide, but she’s terrifying.
Ye Lingxi: “…”
She stood up slowly. “You really are unreliable. And you still don’t believe it.”
Spirit Cat: “Please stop, Host. Give me a break.”
“Break? You’ve got some nerve. I nearly got strangled to death and you only show up now. And now I’ve lost my chance to cling to her. What do I do?”
The spirit cat was speechless.
Spirit Cat: “She’s terrifying. You don’t know what she did to me while you were unconscious. And if it weren’t for her, you’d already be dead.”
“What?” Ye Lingxi clutched her backside. “You said I’d be dead without her?”
Spirit Cat: “Yes.”
Ye Lingxi recalled Ji Fuyu’s unfinished sentence.
Spirit Cat: “She’s not as bad as we thought. She just holds grudges.”
Ye Lingxi looked toward the direction Ji Fuyu had left, rubbed her neck, and poked the spirit cat’s head. “Are you crazy? After what she just did, you still say she’s not bad?” She pointed at her neck. “You weren’t the one being choked!”
She grabbed the spirit cat and squeezed. “Feel that? That’s what suffocation feels like!”
Spirit Cat: “Host! Please! Mercy!”
…
A month passed. Ye Lingxi could finally see again. But Ji Fuyu hadn’t visited once. Strangely, she felt… a little empty. Was she just not used to not being tormented?
“No! What am I thinking? That’s messed up.”
“All done,” Lan Mushu said, untying the white bandage. Ye Lingxi, eyes still closed, was lost in thought.
Lan Mushu and Bai Luotang exchanged glances, nodding and making odd gestures.
“Has she forgotten how to open her eyes?” Lan Mushu asked.
“Maybe,” Bai Luotang agreed.
The spirit cat flew over and bopped her on the head.
Spirit Cat: “Host, open your eyes!”
Ye Lingxi snapped, “Why’d you hit me?! What’s your problem?!”
The spirit cat ignored her. Her two uncles called out together, “Xiao Xi? Ye Lingxi?”
That snapped her out of it. “Sorry, Uncles. My sword spirit and I bicker a lot. Sorry you had to see that.”
Lan Mushu cleared her throat.
Ye Lingxi stopped laughing immediately.
“Are you still unwell?” Bai Luotang reached out, but Lan Mushu stopped her with a shake of her head.
Bai Luotang blinked, smiled, and withdrew her hand.
Ye Lingxi scratched her head. “I guess I’ve gotten used to doing things with my eyes closed.”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright, open them now so we can see if you’ve recovered.”
Ye Lingxi nodded. “Okay.”
Under everyone’s watchful gaze, she opened her eyes. The faces she hadn’t seen in so long came into view.
“Wow! I can see you all so clearly! I can even make out the tiny details on your faces! Your medical skills are amazing—better than laser surgery!”
No one responded. The silence was awkward. Their expressions were stunned.
“What’s wrong? Why aren’t you saying anything?” Ye Lingxi asked, noticing their strange looks.
She turned to the spirit cat, but even it was silent.
Spirit Cat: “This is… unexpected.”
“This is really weird.”
“Have you ever seen anything like this?” Lan Mushu asked Bai Luotang.
Bai Luotang shook her head. “Never.”
“This is truly strange.” Lan Muxu stroked her chin.
Ye Lingxi, confused by their reactions, was handed a bronze mirror. She looked into it and saw nothing unusual.
“What? I look the same as always.”
Wait!
She leaned in closer. Her eyes were golden.
“This… this… what’s going on?!”
