Chapter 6: Returning to Qingyang Sect
System: No worries, Host. Weren’t you planning to return to Qingyang Sect anyway?
“That’s true.” Ye Lingxi thought to herself—it looked like her days of wandering were over.
Her legs had gone numb, and as she tried to stand, she humbly asked,“Master, may I get up now?”
The silver-haired, red-robed child gave a faint smile. “You may.”
Finally! She could stand again—any longer and she might’ve needed amputation. She massaged her aching legs, which were cramping and twitching from numbness.
Ji Fuyu watched her silently, expression unreadable.
Ye Lingxi twisted around awkwardly.
Ji Fuyu: “…”
Once she’d gathered her things, Ye Lingxi went off to register.
System: Host, aren’t you going to disguise your face a bit?
“What’s the point?” she replied casually. “Didn’t you say my face is just basic background material? The main characters aren’t going to remember it.”
System: Fair enough.
But still—why had the demon queen returned to the feather?
The feather swayed as Ji Fuyu’s voice emerged. “Are you done yet?”
Why was she in such a hurry?
“Master, why did you go back into the feather?” Ye Lingxi looked at the tassel on her sword.
Ji Fuyu replied, “This way I don’t waste spiritual energy. I’m going to sleep now.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
Fine, whatever.
“Next!”
Ye Lingxi picked up the calligraphy brush and wrote her name: Ye Lingxi.
Even if she was just cannon fodder here, she still deserved a name. After all, it wasn’t easy making it this far.
At least she’d leave her name behind. So what if no one remembered it?
System: Host, be careful when you go in. I’m going to rest now.
“Alright, rest well.” So everyone gets to rest except me, the poor worker bee.
Oh well.
The system had been with her for so long without a break—it deserved some rest.
Though honestly, it didn’t make much difference whether it was around or not.
Ye Lingxi, carrying her broken sword and registration form, once again headed to Dragon Head Mountain to return to Qingyang Sect. There were quite a few people along the way.
But they were all cannon fodder too—or background characters who’d only appeared once.
Arriving at the gates of Qingyang Sect—no wonder it was ranked first among the four major sects. It was seriously impressive.
Of course, she’d had to climb what felt like a hundred staircases. She was exhausted.
She’d always hated stairs, and now she hated them even more. In just a few days, it felt like climbing stairs had become her full-time job.
She vowed that once she got spiritual energy, she would never climb stairs again.
Looking around, she saw a sea of disciples crowding in to register.
Ye Lingxi finally squeezed her way to the front. On stage sat a large stone inscribed with unfamiliar markings.
“That must be the spirit-testing stone to check if we have spiritual power,” someone commented nearby.
Ye Lingxi glanced over and saw a flirtatious man fanning himself with a silver fan, strutting like a peacock.
He looked oddly familiar.
He winked at her, sending a chill down her spine. Goosebumps rose.
When she looked again, he had vanished.
Then a cool, clear voice rang out: “Welcome to Qingyang Sect.” The speaker was none other than Mo Huaishu. Dressed in blue, she walked forward with determination. Every step radiated confidence and nobility, exuding an aura that couldn’t be ignored.
She was here. She was here. The protagonist had arrived in full spotlight.
Mo Huaishu flicked her sleeve and sat down regally in a chair prepared for her. Crossing one leg over the other, she waved her hand, and someone shouted, “Begin the test!”
The sound of a large gong echoed.
“No matter which sect you wish to join, you must first pass this test.”
A crowd of people grumbled, “Why is it so strict now? Didn’t we just have to fill out a form before? Why do we have to test our spiritual power now?”
“No idea. Maybe the sect has its reasons.”
“Sigh, looks like it won’t be easy this time. The bar’s been raised.”
Ye Lingxi listened to their chatter and shook her head with a smile: It’s not that the bar’s been raised—it’s that the plot has officially begun.
She remembered that at the start of the story, Mo Huaishu took in a female disciple as her chief disciple to protect her beloved—Bai Luotang.
Bai Luotang, another female lead (the “receiver”), was the sect leader of Yunfeng Sect. She needed protection and surveillance. Why? Because in the novel, Bai Luotang was a sickly beauty.
Otherwise, why would she need so many disciples?
So warm and caring—but only for Bai Luotang. No one else should even dream of it.
Wait—did she just say we have to test spiritual power? Crap! She couldn’t even pass the first round. She had no spiritual power. If she did, would she have climbed all those stairs?
She was on the verge of tears.
What now? Was she about to be eliminated?
Someone, please save me.
She clutched her sword tightly, watching as others stepped up to be tested—most of them passed.
It was too painful. Why did all the other cannon fodder have spiritual power? Why were there so many of them?
“Next!” At this point, Ye Lingxi was the only one left who hadn’t taken the test.
Wait—weren’t there a bunch of people just now? Where did they all go? And why did it suddenly get dark? Seriously—did time just skip ahead like that?
The person on stage called again, “Next!”
Ye Lingxi swallowed hard. Why was Mo Huaishu still sitting there? As the female lead, she’d been here all day just to oversee the test? Shouldn’t she be off searching for Bai Luotang?
Oh heavens—why was she suddenly so free? Shouldn’t she be off looking for **Bai Luotang**?
“Are you coming up or not?” The Qingyang disciple’s tone was starting to sound annoyed.
Mo Huaishu’s gaze also turned cold and sharp. She rested her chin on her right hand, eyes narrowing slightly, her expression filled with scrutiny and suspicion. She raised an eyebrow with disdain but said nothing.
Ye Lingxi was overwhelmed by her powerful protagonist aura—she was even more indifferent and ruthless than Ji Fuyu. Taking a deep breath, she summoned all her courage and stepped forward.
Something felt off. Why was Mo Huaishu staring at her like that? Could she possibly recognize her? No way, right? She was just a “faceless” cannon fodder—how could Mo Huaishu remember her?
She shook her head furiously, trying to dismiss the thought.
Staring at the spirit-testing stone, she didn’t know what to do. Her heart was pounding.
Mo Huaishu shifted slightly in her seat, casually resting her hands on the armrests and tapping her fingers—tick, tick, tick—like a countdown urging Ye Lingxi to hurry up.
Ye Lingxi suddenly reached out and placed her hands on the stone. No more hesitation—any longer and she might really raise suspicion.
Her hands touched the stone… and nothing happened.
As expected—no spiritual power.
“Tch. I thought she was someone important—turns out she’s just trash,” someone scoffed.
People who had already tested began whispering.
“Yeah, wasting our master’s precious time.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
Excuse me? She’s the one who insisted on sitting there all day. What was I supposed to do? I’m just as confused as you are. Why isn’t she off looking for her beloved? Why is she here watching a cannon fodder like me?
Mo Huaishu snorted and stood up, ready to deliver her closing remarks. “Everyone—”
Before she could finish, the spirit stone suddenly emitted a blinding light.
Ye Lingxi jumped in shock, unable to open her eyes. The light was so bright it lit up the entire Qingyang Sect.
What the heck?! What just happened?!
Moments later, the light faded.
Everyone present was stunned. “What just happened?”
“Did anyone see that?”
**“No idea.”**
“I think it came from the spirit stone. The last person who touched it was her!”
All eyes turned to Ye Lingxi.
“We thought she was useless, but she’s actually a genious!”
Ye Lingxi heard them and thought—wow, their attitudes changed fast. She smiled silently.
Mo Huaishu approached her. Being a head taller, she looked down at her and said, “Congratulations. You ranked first in spiritual power among all the applicants.”
Ye Lingxi raised her eyebrows. Wait—did the cold, aloof female lead just praise her?
Am I really that amazing? Author, did you see that? Your protagonist just complimented me!
For some reason, Ye Lingxi felt incredibly proud.
Mo Huaishu’s lips curled slightly in a half-smile. She lowered her gaze and addressed everyone casually: “Welcome to our sect. I hope we’ll all get along.”
With that, she turned and left.
Only Ye Lingxi felt uneasy. That smile just now—it was way too eerie. Her body trembled, and she couldn’t calm down.
It wasn’t until a senior disciple led her to the dormitory that she finally relaxed.
System:Congratulations, Host. You’re officially a disciple of Qingyang Sect again.
“Congratulations, my foot! You have no idea how terrifying that was.”
System: What happened?
“What happened? You’re seriously asking?” Ye Lingxi protested. “I’m sure Mo Huaishu recognized me.”
System: Impossible. The protagonist wouldn’t remember a cannon fodder.
“Regardless, I need to stay alert.” She hugged herself for comfort. “By the way, System—was that you who helped me just now?”
System: Nope.
“No? Then who was it?” Ye Lingxi jumped up. “Could it have been my own spiritual power? Am I actually that powerful? Does this mean I don’t need to cling to anyone anymore?”
System:
Just as she was celebrating, the feather tassel on her sword stirred—and Ji Fuyu appeared right in front of her.
“Ahhh!” Ye Lingxi screamed at the sudden appearance.
Ji Fuyu: “…”
“Am I really that scary?” she asked, crossing her arms.
Ye Lingxi shook her head. “No, it’s just… today felt like riding a roller coaster—way too intense.”
Not scary? Between her and Mo Huaishu, she’d been scared out of her wits multiple times today. How could she not be?
Ji Fuyu looked puzzled. “Roller coaster? What’s that?”
Ye Lingxi replied, “Never mind. You… Master, why did you come out?” She almost forgot to call her “Master” again.
When would this end? She really didn’t want to keep calling her that.
