- Chapter 66 - "Husband, You Mustn’t Let That Thing Off the Hook!"
Chapter 66: “Husband, You Mustn’t Let That Thing Off the Hook!”
She hummed a cheerful little tune, delighted beyond words.
“Picking mushrooms, a little girl—wait no, picking ghost orchids, a little girl,” she corrected the lyrics mid-song. “La la la…”
Her hands already full of glowing orchids, she figured it was enough and turned to head back. Suddenly, her finger was pricked by something. A single drop of bl00d fell to the ground, and she sucked on her finger, completely unaware of the subtle changes happening beneath her feet.
“That should be enough.” She tended to her finger, cradling the orchids she had picked tenderly in her arms.
Just as she rounded a corner, she heard someone call out to her:
“Host!”
Ye Lingxi took a step back and spotted a cat-like creature trapped inside a perfectly round orb, helplessly calling to her.
She pointed to herself. “Are you talking to me?”
The spirit cat looked confused:
“Host, don’t you remember me?”
“Am I supposed to?” Ye Lingxi continued hugging the glowing orchids, standing opposite the creature, chatting casually.
“Host, I’m your system!”
It tried to jolt her memory awake.
“Never seen you before.” She shook her head.
The spirit cat was stunned:
“Host… don’t tell me she sealed your memory?!”
“She? Who’s she? The only person I know is my husband.” Ye Lingxi couldn’t make sense of what it was saying and added, “Do you want to get out? If so, I can ask my husband to let you out.”
The spirit cat was in disbelief:
“Host… the husband you’re talking about, who is it?”
Ye Lingxi immediately answered, “The king of this place, of course.”
The system’s code almost crashed on the spot:
“What?! You… and her? You’re married? She didn’t beat you?!”
“She’s my husband. Why would she beat me?” Ye Lingxi found it baffling. “If you keep badmouthing her, I won’t ask her to let you out.” She turned to leave, but the spirit cat called her back.
“Wait! Come back!”
Ye Lingxi paused and backed away. “You keep talking trash about her—I’m not coming back!” She said it in one breath and then bolted away.
“……”
Ye Lingxi ran all the way back to Ji Fuyu’s bedchambers. Ji Fuyu was sitting on the bed, waiting for her.
“Why were you running like that? Did you do something you shouldn’t have?” Ji Fuyu interrogated calmly.
Catching her breath, Ye Lingxi said, “There was a cat-like creature that kept calling out to me. I don’t know why it was so persistent.”
“It called to you?” Ji Fuyu stepped down from the bed and slowly approached her. She was much taller, her side ponytail adorned with tiny silver bells that jingled softly with every graceful step.
Ji Fuyu smoothed out her messy hair, tucking it behind her back. She gently caressed Ye Lingxi’s earlobe in a teasing gesture. “What did it say?”
Ye Lingxi snapped back to focus. “At first, I wanted to ask you to let it go… but then it said mean things about you, so, Husband, you mustn’t let it out!”
Ji Fuyu fell silent.
After a few seconds, she asked, “You really said that?”
“Of course! It insulted you, so we definitely can’t let it go!” Ye Lingxi said, full of sincerity.
Ji Fuyu’s eyes darkened. She toyed with a strand of Ye Lingxi’s hair. “You’d better not be lying to me.”
“How could I lie to you?” Ye Lingxi said earnestly.
Seeing her genuinely honest expression, Ji Fuyu changed the subject. “Where did you go today?”
Ye Lingxi lifted the flowers in her arms and held them up for Ji Fuyu to see. “I went to see the ghost orchids. They’re so beautiful.”
Ji Fuyu was slightly stunned. She had told Ye Lingxi before that the ghost orchids of the demon palace were the most beautiful of all.
“But I heard from others that if you find a multicolored ghost orchid and give it to someone, you’ll receive that person’s blessing. Sadly, I couldn’t find one.” Ye Lingxi pouted with disappointment.
That one sentence made Ji Fuyu’s heart skip a beat, and she found herself asking, “If you did find a multicolored ghost orchid, who would you give it to?”
Ye Lingxi didn’t hesitate. “You, of course.”
Ji Fuyu’s heart stopped briefly. She silently accepted the ghost orchids and said, “Go to sleep.” She turned back to her bed.
Ye Lingxi frowned. “Don’t you like them? If you don’t like the ghost orchids I picked, I’ll find you a multicolored one no matter what.”
Ji Fuyu looked at her and smiled faintly. “Mm, come sleep first. Once you’re well rested, you can go pick more.” She patted the bed beside her.
Ye Lingxi immediately understood and obediently nestled beside her like a clingy kitten.
Ji Fuyu held the ghost orchids in her hand, their glow illuminating her entire face. She looked down at the person curled beside her.
A multicolored ghost orchid, huh? I already picked them all. But the one I gave them to… never appreciated it.
Ye Lingxi, if you returned to your former self, would you look at me with that same cold gaze again?
Like I’m some disgusting bug.
Am I actually hoping you stay this clueless and naive forever?
She tucked a stray lock of hair behind Ye Lingxi’s ear. If you’re just pretending to have amnesia… you’d better hide it well. Otherwise, I won’t be able to stop myself from tormenting you again.
“Husband,” Ye Lingxi looked up at her with golden, trusting eyes.
Ji Fuyu finished adjusting her bangs. “Sleep now.”
Ye Lingxi fell asleep to the sound of her voice, her soft breathing the proof.
Ji Fuyu tucked her in and called out, “Guards!”
The same demon soldier from last time appeared and kneeled. “Your Majesty.”
“What did she do today?”
The soldier recounted everything that had happened.
It matched what Ye Lingxi had told her exactly. Ji Fuyu stared at her peacefully sleeping face, then looked at the orchids in her hand. “Bring me that spirit cat.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
The spirit cat, still trapped in its dark orb, was clueless as it was dragged from the dungeon.
“What do you want with me?!”
“Our king wants to see you.”
“Why would she want to see me?”
This time, no one answered.
It was brought before Ji Fuyu, who now appeared completely different—radiating a chilling aura, like she could devour someone whole.
The spirit cat shivered involuntarily.
She sat on her throne, an intimidating presence. She crossed her long legs and stretched out a hand. With a surge of magic, she pulled the cat and its barrier into her palm.
She turned it this way and that, inspecting it. The system was so terrified, its heart felt like it would explode. It pressed itself against the farthest edge of the orb, trembling.
“W-What are you planning to do?”
Ji Fuyu chuckled coldly. “Just like your host—no manners at all.” Like playing with a bouncy ball, she slammed it to the floor, then magically pulled it back into her hand. Over and over again.
The system nearly broke. It started babbling nonsense.
“Where am I? Is this… the main hall?”
Ji Fuyu stopped and told it, “This isn’t your dumb cultivation hall. This is my palace.”
“Your palace? Why does my head feel so dizzy?”
“Because you’re stupid.”
With a final throw, Ji Fuyu slammed it to the ground and this time didn’t retrieve it—just watched as it bounced and rolled until it stopped.
The system finally caught its breath, realizing the demoness had calmed down—for now. But she continued staring at it… all night long.
When Ye Lingxi woke up, Ji Fuyu wasn’t in bed. After searching, she found her still inside the hall—and noticed the orb on the ground.
The spirit cat nearly burst into tears when it saw her. But what happened next left it utterly speechless.
“Well well, you again? What are you doing here?” Ye Lingxi poked at the orb with a twig she picked up, saw it was still immobile, then tossed the twig aside and ran over to Ji Fuyu.
Ji Fuyu had seen the whole thing. Her eyes never left Ye Lingxi for a second.
Ye Lingxi ran up and said, “Why’d you bring that thing that talks bad about you here?”
Ji Fuyu didn’t reply.
Ye Lingxi kept going, “Don’t tell me you spent the whole night staring at it instead of sleeping with me?”
Ji Fuyu: “…”
Spirit Cat: “…”
It shook its head, convinced it had misheard.
“Don’t tell me… I no longer catch your eye?” Ye Lingxi pointed dramatically at the spirit cat. “You’d rather stare at this fuzzy furball all night than come to bed with me?” She lifted her head and started crying pitifully.
The spirit cat was floored. Did she really just say that?
“You don’t love me anymore?” Ye Lingxi clung to Ji Fuyu’s hand, whining.
The spirit cat slapped a paw to its forehead. Does she even know what she’s saying?
“No.” Ji Fuyu finally spoke, not a trace of impatience in her voice.
The spirit cat was once again shocked. She said no?!
What the hell happened between these two?
“I know I lost my memory, but you can’t just leave me like this.” Ye Lingxi sobbed, her face a mess of tears and snot.
“…” said the spirit cat.
She really has amnesia? That explains it… but if she regains her memory later and finds out she acted like this… won’t that be hilarious?
“No, I won’t,” Ji Fuyu patiently replied.
But Ye Lingxi heard the spirit cat snickering and turned to glare at it. Enraged, she picked up the twig again and pointed it accusingly. “You’re still laughing?! It’s all your fault! If it weren’t for you, my husband wouldn’t have ignored me all night just to stare at a fuzzy furball like you!”
“…” said the spirit cat again.
You wanna talk about me? Maybe look at what you did to me last night. And the nonsense you spouted!
Then, Ye Lingxi turned back to Ji Fuyu with a deadly serious face.
“Husband, you mustn’t let that thing off the hook. It talked bad about you. You can’t let it out.”
That one sentence nearly made the spirit cat want to hard reset itself.
Host, how could you throw your own system under the bus like that?!
