Chapter 67: “So You’re Planning to Give Up on Xiao Xi?”
Hearing all the noise, Ji Fuyu finally had enough of what was happening. With a snap of her fingers, the barrier around the system spirit cat disappeared.
Though it wasn’t clear why she had deactivated the barrier, the spirit cat didn’t waste time on questions. It immediately leapt up and zipped around the room, flying back and forth in front of them.
Ye Lingxi tried to catch it, but the spirit cat was too fast, dodging her every attempt. Frustrated, she stomped her feet. “Husband, why did you let it out?!”
Ji Fuyu replied coolly, “I didn’t sense any real danger from it, so I released it to keep you entertained.” As she spoke to Ye Lingxi, her sharp gaze never left the flying spirit cat, as if silently warning it that if it dared say anything, she would kill them both.
The system cat wisely responded, “Don’t worry! I’ll do my best to keep her entertained!”
Ye Lingxi huffed and glared at the cat. “I don’t like it. You always side with it!”
I’m not even your host! Who is she siding with anyway? The system cat wanted to cry. And can you stop stirring things up? If you get killed, I’ll die with you!
“Have fun then. I’m leaving,” Ji Fuyu said, standing up. Ye Lingxi started to follow her but stopped when Ji Fuyu shot her a warning glance.
Letting out a small pout, Ye Lingxi turned around and lunged at the spirit cat, grabbing it by the ears. “What do you want, huh? Trying to take my husband’s love by transforming into a human?”
The system cat almost puked at that. “What kind of insane things are you saying?!” It tried to reach her forehead. “Are you brain-damaged?”
“You’re the one with brain damage!” she snapped back.
“Fine, even if I turned into a human, I’d probably be a guy, not a woman!”
The system, as far as it knew, didn’t have a gender, but if it did, it definitely wasn’t female. That’s what it always assumed.
Ye Lingxi got even angrier. “So you want to turn into a man now too?!” she shouted, seething with rage.
The system was baffled.
Ye Lingxi tugged hard on its face, causing it to groan in pain. Now that it had a physical form, it was no longer just a virtual program—it could feel pain.
Just as Ji Fuyu had walked away, she turned back and glanced at them again before finally leaving for real.
Ye Lingxi threw the spirit cat away. It barely managed to stabilize itself mid-air. “Host! What the hell is wrong with you?!”
Ye Lingxi put a finger to her lips and shushed it.
The system cat blinked, completely lost as it watched her do something strange.
Finally, Ye Lingxi sighed in relief and whispered, “That act really wore me out.”
The system cat thought it misheard. “Are you still that lunatic from earlier or my real host again?”
Ye Lingxi rolled her eyes. “You’re the lunatic!” She punched the poor thing.
The system was dazed. “Why are you hitting me now?”
“Because you deserve it!” she said, pointing to its head. “Are you trying to get us killed by calling out to me like that?”
“Huh? What are you talking about?”
Ye Lingxi sighed again. “Can’t you tell what’s going on?”
The system finally started catching on. “Wait… you’ve been pretending this whole time?”
“Keep your voice down!” She clamped its mouth shut. “Want me to get you a megaphone to announce it at the demon palace gates?”
“No thanks! I don’t want that demon woman using me as her rubber ball again.”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
“So now you finally admit she’s a demon woman? And yet you kept talking trash about her?”
“But you were the one who snitched!”
Ye Lingxi: “…”
“That’s not important. If I didn’t say something, she’d have gotten suspicious. She has people watching me constantly—you think I had a choice?”
“Okay, fine. So what now?”
“Now we keep pretending,” Ye Lingxi explained, hugging her arms. “We wait until the timing is right and escape. No need to fake our deaths yet.”
“And if that plan fails?”
“Then we go with the original plan.” She responded without hesitation.
The system: …
Back in her sleeping chambers, Ji Fuyu could still hear Ye Lingxi making a fuss.
Ye Lingxi was pulling on the spirit cat’s face and whining, “Husband, I don’t want to stay with it. It keeps badmouthing you.”
The spirit cat couldn’t even speak with her yanking its cheeks.
Ji Fuyu watched and said, “It belongs to you. Why don’t you like it?”
“Mine? I wouldn’t own something this ugly!” Ye Lingxi shouted in disgust, tossing the system cat aside.
The system cat: Great. I’ll remember this betrayal.
Ye Lingxi grabbed Ji Fuyu’s clothes and buried her face in them. “I don’t want it—I want you. Cuddling with it at night is uncomfortable. But holding you helps me sleep well.” Her tears kept falling, soaking Ji Fuyu’s robes.
Ji Fuyu: “…”
“Fine. If you don’t like it, I’ll throw it back in the dungeon.”
Just as she was about to call her guards, Ye Lingxi stopped her and held her arm.
Ji Fuyu’s eyes narrowed, and her next move was about to be an attack.
“It’s too easy on it just to lock it up,” Ye Lingxi said viciously, glaring at the spirit cat.
The system felt chills from that look alone.
Ji Fuyu raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Then how would you punish it? I’m listening.”
“Deep-fry it—no, wait, skin it alive and pour boiling water on it. I bet it’ll be delicious.”
The system cat trembled and shot up into the air. “You can’t do this to me!” it cried, clinging to her clothes.
Ji Fuyu hadn’t expected such a response from Ye Lingxi. “Do what you want with it. I’ll leave it up to you.”
Ye Lingxi squatted down and grabbed it. “You’re mine now.” She hoisted it up and went to prepare the frying oil.
As she set up a large pot, Ji Fuyu turned to leave.
Ye Lingxi sneakily watched to make sure she was really gone before commanding the system to create a replica cat to replace it.
The real system cat, now invisible, waited for the perfect moment to follow the demon guards out of the barrier. It flew straight back to Qingyang Sect.
Anxiety gripped Ye Lingxi. She feared their plan might be exposed and prayed silently: System, please make it back safely.
That night, the system flew nonstop and finally spotted a familiar figure. In its exhaustion, it crashed straight into a tree and fell right into Lan Mushu’s hands.
Lan Mushu held it up by the tail, swinging it. “A spirit beast? Are you Ye Lingxi’s sword spirit? Where is she?”
The system muttered weakly, “Host told me to deliver a message. The demon race is planning to kill members of the sects. There may already be demons disguised among you. Be careful…” And then it passed out.
“Spirit beast?! Spirit beast?!” No matter how she called, it didn’t respond—it was clearly out cold from exhaustion.
Lan Mushu immediately relayed the message to the others.
“What?!” Su Yunli was the first to slam the table. “They dare do this? Outrageous!”
“It seems one of us must become a god as soon as possible.”
“But isn’t Ye Lingxi the reincarnation of the Moon Deity? Why do we still need someone else?”
“Because Ji Fuyu is no longer the naive child from a thousand years ago. She’s been through a lot and is far more dangerous now.”
“Exactly. Better safe than sorry,” Fu Guang agreed, turning to the silent Mo Huaishu. “Huaishu, you are a descendant of the Moon Deity. You’re our best hope. I need you to break through and become a god.”
“If he cultivates too hard, his body won’t hold out,” Bai Luotang objected immediately.
“Junior sister!” Fu Guang snapped, “This isn’t child’s play. That demon is no longer a newborn monster!”
Bai Luotang had no comeback.
Mo Huaishu pulled her behind him. “If you have a problem, talk to me. Don’t yell at her.”
Fu Guang took a breath. “Sorry. I lost my temper.”
“It’s fine,” Bai Luotang replied. “You’ve been exhausted lately, overseeing all the sect matters.”
Lan Mushu cut in, “This isn’t the time for that. When are we going to rescue Xiao Xi?”
“Well…”
Everyone exchanged uncertain glances.
“We still don’t know if this is a trap—or if the demon king purposely released Ye Lingxi’s spirit to lure us.”
“The only way to be sure is to wait until it wakes up.”
“But by the time it does, Xiao Xi might already be—”
“You’re right. She might be dead already. I don’t even know if the Moon Deity’s soul still exists,” Su Yunli said, eyes shifting to Mo Huaishu. “So, Huaishu… everything now depends on you.”
Lan Mushu gasped. “So you’re all planning to give up on Xiao Xi?!”
No one else spoke.
