After Transmigrating Into A Cannon Fodder Character, I Only Want To Survive (GL) - Chapter 21
The meal quickly came to an end.
After paying the bill, Fang Bai and Ji Yuning walked out of the restaurant, only to realize she had forgotten her car keys.
Fang Bai asked Ji Yuning to wait where she was, and she turned back into the restaurant.
The dark clouds in the sky grew heavier, and the light gray clouds drifted by, bringing a cool breeze.
Ji Yuning stood by the steps of the restaurant, looking indifferently at the crowds passing by.
Suddenly, a sound came from her left, and Ji Yuning instinctively looked over. After seeing what it was, Ji Yuning’s calm eyes flickered, and a hint of brightness flashed across them.
Fang Bai got her car keys and left the restaurant.
As soon as she came out, Fang Bai looked towards where Ji Yuning was standing, but she didn’t see her.
Walking down the steps, Fang Bai looked to the left and saw a person squatting by the green plants placed against the restaurant wall.
From the back, it was Ji Yuning.
A look of confusion appeared on Fang Bai’s face. She quietly approached Ji Yuning, wanting to see what she was doing.
Fang Bai took a step and stopped. She noticed Ji Yuning’s shoulders moving, and her hands seemed to be touching something.
“Meow~”
A cat’s meow sounded, and a thin, seemingly five-month-old gray cat poked its head out from between Ji Yuning and the green plants.
Ji Yuning moved her body slightly, holding the cat’s leg with one hand to prevent it from running away, and stroking the cat’s body with the other, trying to make it comfortable.
Fang Bai stood where she was, watching the heartwarming scene between the person and the cat.
The cat noticed Fang Bai and, no longer letting Ji Yuning stroke it, shook its body and escaped from Ji Yuning’s grasp, meowing as it went.
Seeing the cat about to leave, Ji Yuning reached out and picked it up, gently rubbing its head. “Don’t run around.”
Perhaps afraid of scaring the cat, or for some other reason, Ji Yuning’s voice, though still calm, was much less cold than usual.
Even so, the previously docile little creature suddenly became restless, jumping out of Ji Yuning’s arms.
“You—” Ji Yuning’s eyes followed the cat’s movements, watching it trot gracefully to the left, where the traffic was heavy and unsafe. She wanted to call it to stop, but saw it squat down by someone’s feet. Looking up, the warmth on Ji Yuning’s face vanished instantly. She pursed her lips, stood up, and said calmly, “You’re out.”
Fang Bai looked down at the little creature squatting by her feet and smiled slightly. “Yeah.”
At this moment, the cat meowed again and rubbed its head against Ji Yuning’s shoes.
Ji Yuning hesitated for a moment, bent down, picked up the cat, and placed it back where she had found it. Before leaving, she stroked the cat’s ears.
The sound the cat had made earlier had caught Ji Yuning’s attention. Seeing that it was a stray cat, Ji Yuning hadn’t reacted much. But when she saw the cat’s body covered in wounds and bite marks, she thought of herself, and a hint of pity arose in her heart.
But no matter how reluctant she was, Ji Yuning couldn’t take the cat with her.
She was still a guest, how could she have the ability to adopt a stray cat?
Ignoring the cat’s cries behind her, Ji Yuning walked past Fang Bai.
As she passed by, Fang Bai asked, “Do you like it?”
Ji Yuning stopped and lowered her eyes. “No.”
“Okay,” Fang Bai said. “Let’s go then.”
Ji Yuning hummed in agreement.
The car was parked a hundred meters away. When Ji Yuning had walked halfway, she realized Fang Bai wasn’t following her.
Turning her head, Ji Yuning was slightly taken aback.
She saw Fang Bai standing in front of the green plants, arms crossed, her lips moving. Because of the distance, Ji Yuning couldn’t hear what she was saying. Then she saw Fang Bai reach out to the cat.
Ji Yuning’s first instinct was that Fang Bai was going to hurt the cat, and without thinking, she walked towards the green plants.
But she had only taken one step when Fang Bai’s hand landed on the cat.
It was too late.
Ji Yuning’s hands at her sides clenched into fists.
Just as the anger surged, Ji Yuning saw Fang Bai rub the cat’s head, saw the cat rub against Fang Bai’s hand, saw Fang Bai pick up the cat, and saw Fang Bai carrying the cat… walking towards her.
The previously restless cat had become quiet in Fang Bai’s arms, neither moving nor meowing.
Ji Yuning clearly saw that Fang Bai’s white shirt had a dark stain on it, and since Fang Bai was holding the cat close, there would be more than one stain.
After a few breaths, Fang Bai stopped in front of Ji Yuning, holding the cat. “I unlocked the car, why didn’t you get in?”
Ji Yuning’s eyes were fixed on the cat in Fang Bai’s arms. “What… are you doing?”
The wind blew, and a few strands of Fang Bai’s hair brushed against her eyes.
Ji Yuning looked up at Fang Bai’s smiling eyes, which were curved like crescent moons. As their eyes met, Fang Bai said lightly, “Taking it home with us.”
The dark clouds in the distance were suddenly pierced by the sun, and slivers of light leaked through the cracks, allowing people, who had been weighed down by the clouds, to see the rainbow after the storm.
••••
Most of the wounds on the kitten’s body had scabbed over, and it was dirty. Not far from the restaurant was a pet hospital, and Fang Bai parked the car in front of it.
Unbuckling her seatbelt, Fang Bai turned to look at Ji Yuning, who was holding the cat and stroking it, and said gently, “Let’s get it checked out. If there’s no major problem, we’ll give it a bath and take it home.”
Ji Yuning nodded silently.
After getting out of the car, Ji Yuning walked ahead with the cat, and Fang Bai followed behind.
As soon as they entered the store, the staff recognized their intention and asked, “Is this a cat you found?”
Fang Bai walked up to Ji Yuning and nodded. “Yes.”
The staff then got a clear look at Fang Bai and couldn’t help but admire her beauty and kindness. She asked, “Are you adopting it or…?”
Ji Yuning couldn’t help but look at Fang Bai.
Fang Bai smiled at the staff. “Adopting it.”
The staff nodded in understanding, then took the cat from Ji Yuning and gave it a brief check. “Do you want to give it a name first?”
Name it?
Fang Bai was terrible at naming things. She could only call cats “Meow Meow” and dogs “Doggy”…
Hearing the question, Fang Bai called out to Ji Yuning, “You name it.”
Ji Yuning looked at the cat on the counter and said in a low voice, “Beibei.”
Fang Bai raised an eyebrow. “Which ‘bei’?”
Ji Yuning lowered her eyes. “The ‘bei’ in ‘seashell’.”
Solid and beautiful.
A woman with square glasses walked out from inside and said with a smile, “Isn’t that the ‘bei’ in ‘baby’?”
The doctor said to Fang Bai, “It seems your sister likes this cat a lot.”
Both of them paused at the misunderstanding of them being sisters, but neither of them explained.
Fang Bai just winked at Ji Yuning, as if saying, “Looks like I still look young.”
The doctor, while handling the cat, told Fang Bai about the check-up and then picked up the cat. “Please have a seat on the sofa. We’ll take Beibei for the check-up.”
Fang Bai said, “Okay, thank you.”
The two of them sat on the sofa by the window, guided by the staff. The staff then left, leaving the two of them facing each other on the sofa.
Fang Bai took out her phone and replied to messages, but after a few minutes, she suddenly heard Ji Yuning call her.
“Aunt Fang.”
Fang Bai looked up slightly. “Yes?”
Ji Yuning frowned, then hesitated and said, “…Thank you.”
Hearing Ji Yuning’s thanks, Fang Bai was slightly surprised, even though she knew Ji Yuning was thanking her for the cat.
She was still a child.
No matter how strong her hatred was, it couldn’t overshadow her pure kindness.
Fang Bai put her phone down, crossed her legs, and leaned forward slightly. “Do you know that these days, the most words you’ve said to me, besides ‘yes’ and ‘either is fine’, are ‘thank you’?”
Fang Bai rested her chin on her hand and asked casually, “I’m curious, when you say thank you, do you mean it sincerely or are you just being perfunctory, like when you say ‘yes’ or ‘either is fine’?”
Ji Yuning straightened her shoulders, looking straight ahead. “This time, I meant it.”
“…” Fang Bai was silent, then sat up straight and said awkwardly, “You’re quite honest.”
There were many cats and dogs in the store, some playing in cages, some sleeping or eating…
Fang Bai uncrossed her legs and asked Ji Yuning, “There’s a shopping mall nearby. Should we go buy some things for Beibei?”
Ji Yuning looked into the room, worried that Beibei’s check-up would be finished while they were gone.
Fang Bai noticed Ji Yuning’s concern and said, “The check-up will take a while. We can go quickly and come back.”
Ji Yuning nodded. “Okay.”
Fang Bai got up and told the staff who had greeted them earlier. The staff smiled and said okay, then asked, “Are you walking there?”
The shopping mall was only a few hundred meters away, so they could walk. Fang Bai nodded. “Yes.”
“It might rain later. We have umbrellas for customers by the door. You can take one, just in case,” the staff said, pointing to the umbrella stand by the door.
Fang Bai looked in the direction the staff pointed and praised, “That’s very thoughtful of you.”
The staff smiled. “Take your time shopping. We’ll take good care of Beibei.”
Fang Bai thanked them and walked out of the store with Ji Yuning.
The dark clouds were heavier now. The gap from earlier had closed again, and the light had disappeared. The stuffy air made it difficult to breathe.
Except for Fang Bai.
She walked side by side with Ji Yuning on the sidewalk, letting the wind blow across her face, unable to blow away her slightly cheerful mood.
Fang Bai felt this was the most harmonious afternoon she had spent with Ji Yuning since transmigrating into the book.
Even if it was because of a cat.
Fang Bai unconsciously hummed a song.
The singing reached Ji Yuning’s ears, and for a moment, she thought she was back three years ago, when she used to pester Fang Bai to play with her.
“…”
They only spent half an hour in the shopping mall. Fang Bai could tell Ji Yuning was worried about Beibei, so they shopped efficiently. Ji Yuning said what to buy, and Fang Bai picked and bought whatever she liked, finishing quickly.
They went downstairs, only to find several groups of people standing in the lobby.
Looking outside.
It was raining.
The rain wasn’t heavy, so Fang Bai decided they would walk back with an umbrella.
The umbrella was in Fang Bai’s hand. When Ji Yuning heard this, she silently took the bags from Fang Bai.
Walking to the mall entrance, Fang Bai opened the umbrella and turned to Ji Yuning. “Let’s go.”
Ji Yuning stepped under the umbrella.
Ji Yuning had never imagined that she would share an umbrella with Fang Bai one day. Walking on the road, she tried to smooth out the awkwardness in her heart. With her head down, she didn’t notice that Fang Bai had tilted most of the umbrella towards her.
Because the rain was getting heavier, they both quickened their pace and returned to the pet hospital in five minutes.
As soon as they entered, Fang Bai closed the umbrella and asked Ji Yuning, “Are you wet?”
Seeing that Ji Yuning’s temples were slightly wet, Fang Bai took a tissue from the paper bag and made to wipe Ji Yuning’s face.
But Ji Yuning dodged.
Fang Bai’s hand froze in midair, and the words of concern caught in her throat.
Ji Yuning raised her eyelids and took the tissue from Fang Bai, saying softly, “I can do it myself.”
Fang Bai came back to her senses from her daze and smiled. “Okay.”
Then Fang Bai took out another tissue and turned to wipe her clothes.
Seeing Fang Bai’s shoulder mostly soaked, Ji Yuning clenched her hand, crumpling the tissue in her hand.
