After Transmigrating Into A Cannon Fodder Character, I Only Want To Survive (GL) - Chapter 22
The raindrops on Ji Yuning’s temples had dripped from the umbrella onto her face, and a gentle wipe with a tissue removed them. Ji Yuning scanned the store, noticing the trash can near the sofa.
Just as Ji Yuning took a step towards the trash can, Fang Bai’s exclamation suddenly echoed through the store.
“Ah!”
Ji Yuning turned her head to look.
Fang Bai took Beibei from the staff’s hands and held it in her arms, stroking its body.
Catching a glimpse of the dark shadow approaching her, Fang Bai turned Beibei’s face towards Ji Yuning, her eyes sparkling. “Xiao Ning, Beibei is actually a white cat. I thought it was gray.”
Ji Yuning knew Beibei was white and wasn’t too surprised. She took the cat from Fang Bai’s arms and said in a low voice, “Dry it first.”
Fang Bai paused, realizing that Ji Yuning might be concerned about her, and smiled. “No need, wiping with a tissue will just leave lint on my clothes.”
Ji Yuning pursed her lips and looked up to ask the staff, “Excuse me, do you have a hair dryer? My aunt’s hair is wet.”
The staff had also noticed Fang Bai’s mostly wet clothes and nodded immediately. “Yes, please follow me.”
But before leaving, the staff asked in surprise, “You’re not sisters?”
Fang Bai said softly, “No, she’s my friend’s child.”
The staff said, “You have a great relationship! Like a family.”
Fang Bai instinctively wanted to look at Ji Yuning, but found that Ji Yuning had already taken the cat and walked towards the sofa.
Ji Yuning was wearing a simple white T-shirt and light blue jeans today.
The clothes were all chosen by Fang Bai last time, and they gave her a youthful and energetic look, but her back looked too cold.
She didn’t know if it was because of the staff’s words or because of her.
Fang Bai lowered her eyes and smiled silently.
Her hair was half-dried, and her clothes were dried along with it.
The rain outside seemed to be subsiding, and gradually, after twenty minutes, it stopped.
During those twenty minutes, Fang Bai, on the staff’s recommendation, bought several packages from the hospital for future check-ups for Beibei.
When Fang Bai placed the order without hesitation, the staff saw Fang Bai as even more beautiful than when she first entered the store.
When Fang Bai left, the staff waved goodbye, full of reluctance.
The car started, and Ji Yuning was still in the passenger seat, with Beibei in the back.
After the rain, the clouds that had obscured the sky all morning finally disappeared, revealing the blue sky to everyone.
Ji Yuning had ridden in Fang Bai’s car several times and noticed that Fang Bai rarely talked while driving, focusing all her attention on the cars around her and the road signs ahead.
If Fang Bai didn’t speak, Ji Yuning wouldn’t take the initiative to talk to her, so the forty-minute drive home was silent.
However, just as they were about to arrive home, Ji Yuning, listening to Beibei’s constant meowing in the back seat, crossed her fingers and said in a low voice, “Those packages seemed reasonably priced, but some of the items are unnecessary, or even useless. They’re not as valuable as she claimed.”
Surprised by the sudden voice, Fang Bai slowed down and turned to look at Ji Yuning. “Are you saying I wasted money?”
Ji Yuning looked out the window. “…Just analyzing it.”
Fang Bai chuckled, sounding like she was in a good mood.
“Well analyzed, very good.”
Ji Yuning’s eyes froze, not expecting Fang Bai’s praise.
“But I thought of that too,” Fang Bai turned into the small road leading home and said slowly. “Part of the reason I bought them was because the staff was nice and spoke well, and since we were sheltering from the rain, spending a little money didn’t seem so bad.”
“…”
The person next to her fell silent.
Even Beibei in the back seat stopped meowing.
Fang Bai looked at Ji Yuning, whose sharp profile was in her view.
Fang Bai raised an eyebrow. “What are you thinking?”
Ji Yuning turned her head, meeting Fang Bai’s eyes for two seconds.
Fang Bai said gently, “Tell me your honest thoughts about what I just said.”
“…” Ji Yuning’s eyelashes trembled.
Fang Bai coaxed her, “Didn’t you just tell me I wasted money? Why are you afraid to say it now?”
A provocation.
Ji Yuning lowered her eyes, her voice as calm as water. “…The staff is nice and speaks well because they’re service personnel, it’s their job. And buying multiple packages just makes you look foolish and wasteful.”
The car fell silent.
The car drove into the yard and then into the garage.
After stopping, Fang Bai unbuckled her seatbelt and asked, “Is that what you think?”
There was no anger as Ji Yuning had expected, and Fang Bai even had a smile on her lips.
Ji Yuning: “…”
She didn’t speak.
“If you’re going to say it, then say it. Humph.” Fang Bai tsked, seeming a little annoyed by Ji Yuning’s blunt words, and couldn’t help but hum.
Fang Bai felt a little cold and covered her arms with her hands, trying to warm herself. “You’re looking at it from a profit perspective, dealing with things rationally, while I’m the opposite, more emotional. You said some of the items are useless, but when I bought the packages, I wasn’t looking at those useless items, but the big piece of chicken leg.”
Fang Bai remembered what Ji Yuning had just said and smiled slightly. “But in business, rationality is more important.”
Ji Yuning’s lips tightened, and the indifference between her brows softened.
Feeling colder, Fang Bai didn’t want to stay in the car for another second.
Fang Bai coughed lightly, ending her intention to lecture Ji Yuning, and raised an eyebrow. “Now, the foolish and wasteful me is going to take Beibei home. As for you, since you’re so capable, please take the things from the trunk.”
Fang Bai got out of the car, opened the back door, picked up the bag with Beibei, and turned to leave.
Ji Yuning sat in her seat, watching Fang Bai’s back grow smaller in the rearview mirror until she disappeared.
••••
Fang Bai carried the cat bag into the villa first.
Wu Mei saw the bag in Fang Bai’s hand and the white cat inside. Before she could ask where the cat came from, Fang Bai told her, “Sister Wu, please help Xiao Ji with the things.”
Wu Mei quickly understood. “Okay, I’ll go now.”
Wu Mei walked out the door and saw Ji Yuning walking from the garage, carrying many bags.
Her thin body carrying so many bags looked very awkward, as if she could be crushed at any moment.
Wu Mei hurried forward, took several bags from Ji Yuning, and asked, “Xiao Ji, how did you suddenly bring a cat home?”
Ji Yuning said, “Found it on the road.”
Wu Mei was worried. “Found it? Does it have any diseases? Is it contagious?”
Ji Yuning shook her head. “It’s been checked at the hospital and vaccinated, it’s fine.”
“That’s good, that’s good.” Wu Mei relaxed and smiled. “It’s good to have a pet. Miss and those girls don’t see each other anymore, and when you go to school, Miss is alone. Now that she has a pet, she won’t be so lonely.”
Ji Yuning frowned slightly and asked casually, “Aunt Wu, the girls you mentioned, were they the ones who came here often before?”
“Yes!” Wu Mei nodded. “Last time they came to find Miss, they said some very mean things. Later, someone said something bad about you, and Miss got angry and told me to kick them out. After they left, Miss told me not to let them in again.”
As they spoke, they entered the house.
The bag with Beibei was placed on the sofa, and Fang Bai was nowhere to be seen in the living room.
Wu Mei shook the cage and other items in her hand and looked at the cat. “Where should these go?”
Ji Yuning said, “My room.”
“What about when you go to school?” Wu Mei asked, then suggested, “How about we put them in the guest room on the second floor? You can go there whenever you want, and when school starts, I can help take care of it.”
“Thank you, Aunt Wu.”
Wu Mei laughed. “Don’t thank me, child. That’s what I should do. Otherwise, I’d be taking Miss’s salary for nothing.”
They decided to take the things upstairs.
Wu Mei didn’t know what they had bought, so she went downstairs to get the cat bag, while Ji Yuning stayed in the room, unpacking the cat nest and other things.
During this time, there were some loud noises, but they didn’t seem to affect the person in a room on the second floor. The white door remained closed.
Even at dinner, Fang Bai didn’t come downstairs.
Wu Mei said to Ji Yuning, who was sitting at the dining table waiting for the head of the household, “Miss said she’s not hungry and won’t eat dinner. You don’t have to wait. Eat first, and I’ll make something for Miss later.”
“Okay.”
Ji Yuning picked up her chopsticks and started eating slowly.
9:30 PM.
Ji Yuning’s door was knocked.
When Ji Yuning opened the door, she saw Wu Mei standing there, and a moment of confusion flashed across her seemingly calm eyes.
Wu Mei handed Ji Yuning the milk and said, “Xiao Ji, Miss has a fever. I’m here to bring you your milk.”
A fever?
Was it… because of the rain?
“Drink the milk while it’s hot, Xiao Ji, then go to sleep. You have school tomorrow.”
Seeing Wu Mei turn to leave, Ji Yuning blurted out, “Aunt Wu.”
Wu Mei turned back in surprise. “Yes? What is it?”
Yes, what was it?
She actually wanted to ask Wu Mei about Fang Bai’s condition…
Ji Yuning frowned unconsciously.
Ji Yuning held the door, suppressed her thoughts, and changed the subject. “…Where’s Beibei?”
Wu Mei replied, “I just checked on it. It’s asleep.”
Ji Yuning said calmly, “Okay, I understand.”
Wu Mei smiled kindly. “Get some rest.”
Wu Mei went downstairs.
After a slight door-opening sound came from the second floor, Ji Yuning closed her door.
••••
Fang Bai didn’t expect this body to be so weak. Just a little rain caused a fever.
No wonder she felt colder and colder in the garage, so cold that she didn’t want to stay for another second and hurriedly got out of the car.
But even after returning to her room and lying in bed, she was still cold.
If Wu Mei hadn’t noticed something was wrong, Fang Bai, who had been curled up in bed all afternoon without realizing she was sick, would have almost transmigrated again.
Fortunately, after taking the fever reducer, Fang Bai felt much better.
As soon as Wu Mei entered, Fang Bai opened her eyes and asked, “Sister Wu, did you give Xiao Ning the milk?”
“Yes, I did.” Wu Mei walked to the bed and said gently, “Miss asked me to, of course I did.”
Fang Bai felt a warmth in her heart, remembering Wu Mei’s care in helping her drink water and take medicine. “Sister Wu, thank you.”
“Don’t be polite, Miss.”
Wu Mei reached out to Fang Bai’s forehead, afraid that the calluses on her hands would irritate Fang Bai’s skin, she only lightly touched it, feeling that the temperature had gone down a bit. “How are you feeling, Miss? Are you better?”
When she discovered Fang Bai’s fever, Wu Mei wanted to call a doctor, but Fang Bai stopped her.
Wu Mei had to find the fever reducer in the medicine cabinet and give it to Fang Bai.
Fang Bai hummed. “Better.”
Wu Mei was getting old, and Fang Bai couldn’t bear to let her stay up late, so she said, “Go to sleep, I took the medicine, the fever will go down soon.”
Wu Mei was worried and said gently, “I’ll stay here with you, Miss.”
“No need, I’m much better.”
Fang Bai’s attitude was firm, and Wu Mei, though concerned, finally said, “Then call me if you need anything, Miss. I’ll come up right away.”
Fang Bai managed a weak smile and nodded. “Okay.”
Whether it was the medicine working or the fever itself,
Fang Bai, who had slept all afternoon, was still sleepy.
Watching Wu Mei leave, and after the door closed,
Fang Bai couldn’t keep her heavy eyelids open and slowly closed her eyes.
