- Chapter 7 - Sweet Aroma
Cheng Jianli froze for a moment, then immediately turned her head away, hiding the nape of her neck from Jiang Muyan’s view. “It’s just a scratch. It’s a band-aid.”
“A scratch?” Jiang Muyan instantly grew anxious, her voice laced with concern. “When did you get hurt? Was it yesterday? How deep is it? Does it hurt? Do you need a tetanus shot—”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
Is this person an idiot? She actually believed it.
“My family has a doctor. I’ll call them!” Jiang Muyan turned around. “If you were cut by something rusty and the wound is deep, you definitely need a tetanus shot…”
“No need,” Cheng Jianli stopped Jiang Muyan. “Just focus on your homework.”
“No way. I have to have the doctor check you out. Don’t take your health lightly.” Jiang Muyan’s tone was firm.
Cheng Jianli: “…”
Rubbing her temples, Cheng Jianli sighed. She was always careful, she even wore a shirt under her school uniform yet Jiang Muyan had still noticed.
“Anyway, I’m fine. Don’t call a doctor,” she said, pulling her collar up higher to cover the spot completely. “And don’t tell anyone.”
Jiang Muyan blinked. “Why not?”
Cheng Jianli: “No reason.”
After a brief silence, Jiang Muyan suddenly added, “But it smells really nice. What kind of band-aid is that? I want to buy one too.”
If her wife had it, she wanted it too.
Cheng Jianli: “It’s from the store.”
“Then take me to buy one tomorrow.”
“No.”
“Why not? Are you looking down on me?” Jiang Muyan immediately pouted, slumping over the desk like a wounded kitten.
What did that have to do with looking down on her?
Cheng Jianli felt her usual composure crumbling under Jiang Muyan’s words. “…This isn’t something you can just buy casually.”
“You just said it’s from the store.”
“Yes, but only I can buy it.”
“Then buy it for me.”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
True to her word, Jiang Muyan pulled a card from her school uniform pocket. “Here, take it. There’s money inside, use it however you want.”
Cheng Jianli frowned.
“I like the smell of your band-aid. Buy me a few more,” Jiang Muyan said eagerly. Whatever her wife liked, she liked too. “This is my allowance for the month. It’s all yours.”
Cheng Jianli realized Jiang Muyan was serious. Yesterday, she had overheard about the Jiang family’s donations, the laboratory buildings and sports facilities and today, she had seen the extravagance of Jiang Muyan’s home. This young lady wasn’t joking.
She might genuinely be trying to give her money.
Cheng Jianli stood up abruptly. “I don’t need it. And this thing doesn’t cost that much.”
“It’s fine. You can keep the rest,” Jiang Muyan said cheerfully. She loved spending money on her wife. “But you have to buy me the exact same band-aid, okay? The scent is so sweet, like mangoes. I love it.”
Cheng Jianli stared at Jiang Muyan in bewilderment. “?”
Now she didn’t just think Jiang Muyan was an academic slacker, she was probably someone who hadn’t paid attention in biology class either.
Well, that fit the profile of a slacker perfectly.
Cheng Jianli pushed Jiang Muyan’s hand away. “Forget it. I have one in my bag. I’ll give you one.”
“Really?!” Jiang Muyan was overjoyed inside but acted shy, “That’s too kind of you. You should keep this card there’s five hundred thousand in it. Is it not enough? If not, I have two more with—”
Cheng Jianli took something out of her backpack and handed it to her.
“Thank you!” Jiang Muyan accepted it with both hands, only to realize upon closer inspection that it didn’t look like any bandage she’d used before. This one was round, with a layer of transparent adhesive inside.
She sniffed it. “It smells so good.”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
Jiang Muyan: “Can I put it on now?”
Cheng Jianli: “Up to you.”
Jiang Muyan tore open the packaging, and a sweet mango scent wafted out. She stuck it on the back of her neck.
“Don’t tell anyone I gave it to you,” Cheng Jianli said as she sat down, realizing they wouldn’t make it home by 10:30 if this kept up. “Hurry up and do your problems.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell a soul,” Jiang Muyan said happily, now in possession of the mango-scented patch. “It really does smell amazing.”
Cheng Jianli glanced at her, then turned away, her cheeks slightly flushed.
By the time Jiang Huai and Lin Shu returned, Cheng Jianli had just finished tutoring Jiang Muyan. Today, Jiang Muyan had only managed to complete one science practice test.
Lin Shu and Cheng Jianli were talking in the living room, while Jiang Muyan hid behind the door and anxiously asked her system, “System, do you think my wife will think I’m too dumb and stop tutoring me?”
System: “…”
Jiang Muyan: “Why aren’t you answering? Are you too good for me?”
Suddenly, a voice came from above. “What are you doing here?”
Jiang Muyan turned to see Jiang Huai standing behind her, holding a cup of hot tea.
“Dad, what’s Mom talking to Cheng Jianli about?”
“No idea. Probably discussing your tutoring schedule and fees?” Jiang Huai was taller than Jiang Muyan, so he could easily see the scent-blocking patch on the back of his daughter’s neck.
Mango-scented. Very obvious.
These patches were typically used by omegas who had already presented, to mask their pheromones and avoid detection.
Could Jiang Muyan have presented?
Jiang Huai: “…”
He took another sip of tea before asking, “Muyan, where’s your medical report?”
“It’s in my room.” Jiang Muyan was too preoccupied with the conversation in the living room to even turn her head.
Jiang Huai had seen her medical report there was a 99.99% chance she’d present as an alpha, with almost no possibility of becoming an omega. But then… why was she wearing a scent-blocking patch? Only omegas used those.
“Where did you get that thing on your neck?”
“This?” Jiang Muyan touched it. “I bought it myself.” She remembered Cheng Jianli forbidding her from telling anyone she’d given it to her. She always listened to her wife!
Jiang Huai figured she’d just bought it because she thought it looked cute. “It probably doesn’t do anything for you. Take it off.”
“That’s exactly why I’m wearing it, it smells nice,” Jiang Muyan said.
Jiang Huai sipped his tea: “…”
As father and daughter chatted, the people in the living room stood up. Cheng Jianli said to Lin Shu, “Thank you, Auntie. I’ll come back next week.”
Lin Shu smiled. “It’s us who should be thanking you.”
Jiang Muyan watched as her wife left before emerging from behind the door to ask, “Mom, what were you and Cheng Jianli talking about just now?”
“We were scheduling your tutoring sessions for next week,” Lin Shu said with a smile. “Teacher Cheng seems quite reliable. I remember she’s the top student in Hongchuan Seventh High School?”
“Yes, same school as Muyan,” Jiang Huai added.
Jiang Muyan only caught the key information: “She’s coming again next week?”
Lin Shu asked, “What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy about it?”
Of course, Jiang Muyan was happy ecstatic, in fact. She hugged Lin Shu tightly. “Thanks, Mom! I’ll study hard for sure!”
Seeing Jiang Muyan like this, Jiang Huai suddenly remembered something. “By the way, your class transfer has been approved. Remember to report to Class 2 on Friday.”
The stream of good news made Jiang Muyan overjoyed. That night, as she lay in bed, she held onto the band-aid Cheng Jianli had given her.
The band-aid looked rather odd soft to the touch and malleable like putty. Jiang Muyan played with it in her hands for a while before quietly sticking it back on and drifting off to sleep.
A few days later, at Hongchuan Seventh High School.
It was Friday, and as the class representative, Cheng Jianli needed to collect the weekly summaries and submit them to the homeroom teacher.
Just as she gathered the papers and headed to the office, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
A text notification popped up.
Gu Xi: [Are you free after school?]
Cheng Jianli had met Gu Xi at a calligraphy competition. Though they attended different schools, they had exchanged contact information and became friends.
Cheng Jianli replied: [What’s up?]
Gu Xi: [I did really poorly on the start-of-term exam. There are some questions I don’t understand, and I was hoping you could help me out. Maybe grab a bite to eat too?]
Cheng Jianli typed back: [I have a tutoring session tonight.]
Gu Xi: [It won’t take too much of your time, just a quick drink. Please?]
After a moment’s thought, Cheng Jianli replied: [Alright, you pick the place.]
As she slipped her phone back into her pocket, she overheard some students cleaning the blackboard chatting: “Did you hear Jiang Muyan’s transferring to our class?”
“No way! I thought Class 1 was just joking around. It’s actually happening?”
“Yeah, yeah! She’s in Old Zhang’s office right now.”
“The young miss is super pretty, and I heard she’s really nice. I’d love to be friends with her, haha…”
Cheng Jianli walked past them and straight to the homeroom teacher Zhang Wen’s office.
Inside the office, Jiang Muyan was staring at the report card in Zhang Wen’s hands: “…”
“Jiang Muyan, your grades last semester wasn’t the best,” Zhang Wen said as tactfully as possible. “What are your thoughts on that?”
Jiang Muyan replied, “I’ll study hard and not let Class 2 down.”
“It’s not about letting anyone down. Class 2’s curriculum is moving at a faster pace, and we hope you can catch up quickly,” Zhang Wen patted Jiang Muyan’s shoulder. “Good luck.”
“Got it. Thanks, teacher.” Like her original self, Jiang Muyan was a carefree underachiever.
“By the way, the class rep will be here soon. She’ll take you to Class 2.”
Just then, Cheng Jianli’s voice came from the doorway: “Teacher Zhang, I’ve collected all the weekly summaries.”
Jiang Muyan turned around and saw Cheng Jianli standing behind her, dressed in the beige school uniform with a light gray shirt underneath. The narrow collar framed her fair neck, half-hidden beneath the fabric.
“You’re here,” Zhang Wen put down the report card in her hand and said to Jiang Muyan. “This is Cheng Jianli, the academic committee member from Class 2. Just follow her.”
Cheng Jianli’s long eyelashes fluttered slightly as she spoke in an even tone, “Come with me.”
The two made their way through the crowded hallway, where most students were chatting. Against the white-and-green background walls, they appeared particularly youthful and full of vitality.
Jiang Muyan hadn’t seen much of Cheng Jianli these past few days. Now that she was following her, she couldn’t stop talking: “Teacher Cheng, slow down a bit, will you?”
Cheng Jianli slowed her pace.
“It’s Friday today, are you coming to my place for tutoring?”
Cheng Jianli: “Mhm.”
Lin Shu had already arranged for her to tutor Jiang Muyan every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Jiang Muyan gazed at Cheng Jianli’s beautiful, cool profile and thought regretfully, why does she always wear a shirt under her school uniform? It covers her neck so tightly that she can’t even catch a whiff of that sweet mango scent anymore.
Jiang Muyan grabbed Cheng Jianli’s wrist and blinked.
Cheng Jianli: “?”
“See this band-aid I’ve been wearing for days? Does it look good?” Jiang Muyan moved to a spot where others couldn’t see and quietly lifted the hair at the back of her head. “Isn’t it exactly like yours?”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
Cheng Jianli: “You really don’t know what this is for?”
“Huh? Isn’t it just for fun?” Jiang Muyan turned around and added in a very serious tone, “Of course, I know you got hurt. Remember not to let the wound touch water, and avoid greasy, salty, or overly spicy food.”
Cheng Jianli: “…Mhm.”
