- Chapter 8 - She Likes It So Much
Class 2.
Jiang Muyan carefully wrote her name on the blackboard stroke by stroke, then turned around and said, “Hello everyone, my name is Jiang Muyan.”
The classroom instantly erupted with chatter: “Wait, is this the Jiang Muyan from that hot forum post? She’s really in our class now?”
“What hot post? I didn’t hear about it.”
“It was on Hongchuan Forum, already deleted now. But the young miss was super cool in the equipment room, she’s got history with our Class 2…”
“Wow, she’s so pretty. Our class’s average attractiveness just skyrocketed.”
“Hold on, Jiang Muyan… Didn’t her father donate that new lab building recently? I think the back playground was renovated by the Jiang Group too?”
“No way, that’s insane money!”
“Can I apply to be Jiang Muyan’s desk mate? Not about the money, I just want to sit with a beauty!”
“Let me! Let me sit with the young miss!”
“…”
Teacher Zhang Wen raised her hand for silence. “Jiang Muyan is transferring from Class 1. Everyone should get along well with her, she’s your classmate now.”
Jiang Muyan smiled brightly. Her fair complexion and delicate features gave her an exceptionally pure appearance.
Zhang Wen: “Jiang Muyan, your eyesight should be good. Why don’t you sit…”
As the teacher scanned the classroom for a seat, Jiang Muyan suddenly said, “Teacher, may I sit with Cheng Jianli?”
At that moment, Cheng Jianli happened to look up and meet Jiang Muyan’s gaze. Jiang Muyan winked at her.
Cheng Jianli: “…”
“Sit with the class rep?! Why? She’s too cold! Pick me, I’ll tell the young miss jokes!”
“Since when do you know any jokes?”
“The rep sits by the window, bad for seeing the board! My seat has perfect visibility for copying homework… I mean, doing homework!”
“I get good grade, let me tutor her!”
“Funny, like you could outscore the rep…”
“Quiet everyone,” Zhang Wen massaged her temples at her lively students’ antics. After surveying the room, she said, “Fine. Jiang Muyan, take the seat next to Cheng Jianli.”
Cheng Jianli’s desk was by the window in the fifth row. As Jiang Muyan walked over, the teacher instructed the class to open their Chinese textbooks to page ten. Amid the rustling pages, Jiang Muyan settled in.
Cheng Jianli sensed movement beside her but didn’t turn. Then a nudge at her arm made her glance up to see Jiang Muyan’s beaming face, radiating inexplicable joy.
The warmth wasn’t unpleasant. Cheng Jianli paused slightly before silently opening her book without comment.
Jiang Muyan knew Cheng Jianli treated everything with detachment becoming desk mates would seem utterly ordinary to her.
Yet Cheng Jianli looked breathtakingly beautiful, sunlight from the window painting her pale face like a masterpiece.
Precious and adorable.
Collecting herself, Jiang Muyan opened her textbook too, though her thoughts whispered: She adored Cheng Jianli so much, whether at eighteen or in her twenties, the feeling never changed.
True to her sociable nature, Jiang Muyan befriended all of Class 2 within one break. But her attention remained entirely fixed on Cheng Jianli, indifferent to everyone else.
She stealthily pulled out a small mirror from her backpack and checked her reflection absolutely flawless.
Turning her head, she flashed a perfectly charming smile at Cheng Jianli and said, “Teacher Cheng, let’s walk home together after school today—”
“No.” Cheng Jianli rejected her flatly, without a hint of emotion.
Jiang Muyan: “???”
“Why not?! It’s Friday, you’re supposed to tutor me today!” Jiang Muyan hadn’t expected to be turned down at all.
“I have plans after school,” Cheng Jianli said, packing up her desk.
Plans?!
Jiang Muyan froze in shock at those words.
“So… you’re not coming to my place tonight?”
“I am. See you at eight,” Cheng Jianli replied. “We’ll study math then. Have your test papers ready.”
“But…” Jiang Muyan wanted to argue, but then she remembered Cheng Jianli didn’t owe her any explanations about her whereabouts.
From what she knew, Cheng Jianli didn’t like making friends and always kept to herself. Could there really be something or someone more important than her?
The thought instantly soured Jiang Muyan’s mood.
Noticing Jiang Muyan’s conflicted expression wanting to ask but not daring to Cheng Jianli finally said, “What’s wrong?”
Jiang Muyan’s face darkened. “…Nothing.”
Amid the noisy classroom chatter, the two sat in silence for three whole minutes before Jiang Muyan finally caved and turned to ask, “Who did you make plans with?”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
“A friend,” Cheng Jianli said. “I’ll be at your place by eight. I won’t waste your tutoring time.”
Jiang Muyan’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You have a friend?”
Cheng Jianli: “Is that so strange?”
Yes.
According to the system, even though Cheng Jianli had been reborn into this world from birth, her personality and habits remained almost identical to her pre-transmigration self—meaning she shouldn’t be the type to easily make friends.
Jiang Muyan pressed, “Are you going alone?”
Cheng Jianli: “Mhm.”
Jiang Muyan: “Then take me with you.”
Cheng Jianli: “? Why would I do that?”
Before Jiang Muyan could answer, an excited discussion erupted behind them:
“Did you hear? A girl from Class 5 just presented, she’s an omega!”
“Wow, isn’t she the first in our school to present?”
“What’s the big deal? Everyone presents after turning eighteen,” another girl chimed in. “Though omegas have it tougher—they have to carry suppressants and scent blockers.”
Jiang Muyan was about to continue questioning Cheng Jianli, but in a flash, Cheng Jianli slipped past her probably heading to the teacher’s office.
Watching Cheng Jianli’s slender retreating figure, Jiang Muyan gritted her teeth in frustration. Damn it, who the hell did Cheng Jianli make plans with? She had to know!
The chatter nearby continued:
“Oh yeah, I saw scent blockers for sale at the convenience store near the station the other day. They even come in different designs and scents! Wanna check them out after school?”
“You haven’t even presented yet. Why buy them now?”
“My medical report says I’ll present as an omega, so I’m just preparing in advance…”
Jiang Muyan’s ears perked up at the keyword. She turned to the girls and asked, “What are these scent blockers you’re talking about?”
“They’re patches that block an omega’s pheromones so others can’t smell them,” one girl answered softly, her cheeks flushing slightly under Jiang Muyan’s clear, spring-like gaze.
Blocking pheromones…
Then Cheng Jianli would probably use them too after presenting.
Lost in thought, Jiang Muyan fell silent.
No, she should buy a few too, just in case her wife presents, she’d have some backups ready.
After school, Cheng Jianli spotted Gu Xi at the school gate.
Gu Xi was a student from the neighboring Ninth High School, dressed in a blue uniform. When she saw Cheng Jianli, she waved and called out, “Cheng Jianli!”
Cheng Jianli instinctively touched the scent suppressant patch on the back of her neck, making sure it was secure, before walking over.
Gu Xi was slightly taller than Cheng Jianli, with a sun-kissed complexion. “How have you been lately?” she asked. “We haven’t seen much of each other since summer break. I was wondering how you were doing.”
“I’m fine,” Cheng Jianli replied tersely. Gu Xi was a classmate she’d met during a calligraphy competition. Back then, Gu Xi’s bike pedal had broken, and Cheng Jianli had helped fix it.
That was how they became friends.
“You wanted me to look over your exam papers, right? Let’s make it quick, I have a tutoring session tonight.”
“You’re tutoring someone? But your grades are already so good!” Gu Xi sounded surprised.
Cheng Jianli shook her head. “Not for me. I tutor others.”
Gu Xi knew about Cheng Jianli’s situation her mother had passed away, and she lived alone, spending her free time tutoring middle schoolers.
“Alright, let’s grab a drink first,” Gu Xi said with a smile.
They went to a quiet bubble tea shop, nearly empty except for them. Gu Xi chose a seat by the window, set her bag down, and said, “Wait here. I’ll get us something to drink.”
Cheng Jianli nodded, and Gu Xi handed her the exam papers from her bag, looking a little embarrassed. “I only scored 72 in math on the placement test. My parents won’t stop nagging me about it.”
The full score for high school math was 150, so 72 was indeed a poor result.
But Cheng Jianli had seen worse, much worse.
That “much worse” being Jiang Muyan, of course.
Earlier, when she’d gone to the homeroom teacher’s office, Cheng Jianli had secretly glanced at Jiang Muyan’s report card.
Chinese: 115. English: 104. Math: 43. Science: 126.
The imbalance was staggering, no wonder she needed a science tutor.
Cheng Jianli didn’t know why Jiang Muyan kept popping into her thoughts, but her face and voice lingered in her mind with surprising clarity.
“Take a look at the papers first,” Gu Xi said. “I’ll go order us some iced milk tea.”
“Mm.”
As Gu Xi walked away, Cheng Jianli rubbed her temples and pulled out a pencil to start marking the test. Suddenly, a familiar voice sounded behind her:
“You just left me behind after school?”
“…?” Cheng Jianli turned to see Jiang Muyan standing there, looking like an abandoned kitten, her expression full of grievance.
“You promised to take me with you! How could you just leave like that?” Jiang Muyan clutched her black backpack, clearly having run all the way here. Her face was a picture of heartbreak. “Why didn’t you wait for me?”
Cheng Jianli: “…When did I promise that?”
Jiang Muyan didn’t answer because she’d noticed the test papers in Cheng Jianli’s hands. The name on them wasn’t Cheng Jianli’s.
It was Gu Xi’s.
Jiang Muyan recognized that name. Uncle Liu had given her the details.
A senior-year alpha from Ninth High.
Jiang Muyan’s eyes widened. “What are you doing?”
Cheng Jianli: “I’m helping someone review their test—”
Before the words had even finished, Jiang Muyan grabbed Cheng Jianli by the shoulders, her voice dripping with grievance: “What?! You’re tutoring her?! Aren’t you, my tutor? Why are you helping someone else? How can you be so unfaithful? I’m your student!!!”
Jiang Muyan’s grip was incredibly strong, shaking Cheng Jianli until her head ached. Cheng could only manage to say, “Wait, calm down…”
“Don’t tutor her!” Jiang Muyan grabbed her hand urgently. “Come with me, I need lessons! I want to study hard! I want to be top of the year… no wait, you’re already first, so I’ll settle for second!”
Jiang Muyan’s voice was so loud that people around them started staring. Cheng Jianli felt utterly embarrassed and tried to restrain her: “I’m not tutoring her, just helping her review some test questions.”
“I don’t care! I don’t care! I just won’t let you tutor her!” Jiang Muyan was beyond reasoning now. She knew her wife had come out to meet this person, she’d seen them talking at the school gate last time and had been seething with jealousy. Now there was tutoring involved too? Absolutely unacceptable.
Why did her love rivals multiply after transmigrating into this novel? Damn it!
“Jiang Muyan, you…” Cheng Jianli’s hand was clamped so tightly she couldn’t break free. Just as she was about to say something, Jiang Muyan’s expression suddenly turned strange she seemed unable to breathe, her face paling rapidly as her breathing grew labored.
The system urgently popped up: [Host, calm down! Your symptoms seem to be flaring up!]
Jiang Muyan knew she was having an episode, she felt exactly like she had that day: her heart racing from agitation, chest tightening, breathing becoming increasingly terrifying.
How could she have forgotten about the hyperventilation syndrome…
It hurt so much, breathing was so hard…
Her throat went dry as her body collapsed heavily. Cheng Jianli, shocked, immediately caught her: “What’s wrong?”
Jiang Muyan couldn’t even catch her breath, her face ghostly pale as she weakly raised a trembling finger.
Frowning anxiously, Cheng Jianli asked, “Do you need an ambulance? I’ll call one right now.”
She immediately pulled out her phone to dial 120, but Jiang Muyan shook her head painfully. Thinking she needed something, Cheng asked, “What is it? What do you need?”
“No…” Jiang Muyan’s voice was barely audible. Cheng leaned closer until the words finally reached her ears:
“Don’t tutor anyone else…”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
What kind of timing was this? How could she still be hung up on tutoring at a time like this?!
“I’m calling the ambulance first.”
Cheng Jianli remained composed as always while Jiang Muyan leaned against her shoulder, trying to steady her breathing.
She dreaded the ambulance actually arriving heaven knew she only had these symptoms because of system instability, there was nothing actually wrong with her body!
Moreover, just hugging Cheng Jianli could alleviate the condition. Now, enveloped in her scent, Jiang Muyan felt much better. She quickly pressed down on Cheng’s phone-calling hand: “Don’t call, I’m fine now.”
“?” Cheng Jianli eyed her suspiciously. “…You’re fine now?”
“Yes, I’m fine now.” Jiang Muyan had returned to normal, showing no signs of breathlessness. At this close distance, she could clearly smell the mango-scented bandage on Cheng Jianli’s neck.
Why does this mango scent smell so good? Jiang Muyan wondered to herself. As she leaned in closer, she detected another faint, sweet fragrance even more enticing than the mango.
“Can you stand up?” Cheng Jianli asked.
Jiang Muyan nodded and pulled herself up with Cheng Jianli’s help.
Thank goodness her wife was here otherwise, she would’ve been in real trouble during that episode.
“The first time I met you, you were like this too,” Cheng Jianli said with concern. “You should really go to the hospital for a full checkup when you have time.”
Jiang Muyan: “…”
Why did she feel like Cheng Jianli was looking at her as if she had some terminal illness?
“I’m really fine! That was just a special circumstance!” Jiang Muyan defended. “Didn’t you hear how clear my voice was just now? That proves I’m perfectly healthy! Besides, I’m super strong, I could even go all night with you before—”
“What did you say?”
Jiang Muyan: “…I meant studying. I could study with you all night.”
Cheng Jianli gave her a silent look.
Afraid that Cheng Jianli might actually start suspecting she had some serious illness, Jiang Muyan quickly sat down and changed the subject. “By the way, where’s that classmate of yours? Why hasn’t she come back yet?”
“How did you know I was here?” Cheng Jianli ignored her question.
“Because I used my big, brilliant brain,” Jiang Muyan said smugly, tapping her temple.
Cheng Jianli: “…”
Does she even have one?
