- Chapter 9 - This is Important
“Alright, actually it was my friend who told me,” Jiang Muyan rested her head on the table, her hair softly framing her face, making her look both sulky and adorable. “My friend’s name is Luo Jiajia, the girl who brought you water on the field last time.”
Cheng Jianli: “Hmm, I remember her.”
Hearing that Cheng Jianli remembered, Jiang Muyan immediately sat up straight. “But don’t get the wrong idea, my friend isn’t interested in you.”
Cheng Jianli looked at her with amusement. “Do I seem that narcissistic?”
“Of course not!” Jiang Muyan shook her head, then blurted out without thinking, “But, but you really are so pretty.”
At the word “pretty,” Cheng Jianli turned her head away slightly.
“You don’t believe me?” Thinking Cheng Jianli doubted her, Jiang Muyan leaned in closer, her tone earnest. “You’re seriously, seriously beautiful. There was this hot post where people saw your photo and were all asking for your contact info.”
Cheng Jianli: “What hot post?”
“The one about the incident in the equipment room that day. My classmate posted it on the forum,” Jiang Muyan scratched her head. “But I made him delete it.”
Cheng Jianli lowered her gaze. “Did no one ask for your contact info?”
“They did, but I’d never give it to them,” Jiang Muyan said proudly. “I have principles.”
“Then, would you like to leave me your phone number?” Cheng Jianli smiled faintly.
Jiang Muyan froze, then immediately brightened. “Yes, yes, yes! Of course!”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
For the first time, Cheng Jianli actively input someone else’s number into her phone. Once she finished, Jiang Muyan scratched her head sheepishly, her face flushed as she asked, “Um… why did you think to ask for my number?”
Cheng Jianli looked at her, still smiling. “Your mom mentioned you skip class sometimes and asked me to keep an eye on you at school.”
Jiang Muyan: “? What do you mean?”
Cheng Jianli curled her lips and set her phone aside. “If you skip class and I can’t reach you, I’ll tell your mom.”
Watching Jiang Muyan’s stunned expression, Cheng Jianli, usually so aloof felt a rare flicker of amusement, her tone carrying a hint of aristocratic playfulness. “Is that not allowed?”
How could Jiang Muyan ever say “no” to Cheng Jianli? Even if it meant being caught skipping class, she’d endure it!
Jiang Muyan replied, “Of course it’s allowed, just…”
Cheng Jianli: “Just what?”
Jiang Muyan lowered her head shyly. “Call me right now. I want your number too.”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
She had no choice but to dial Jiang Muyan’s number. When Jiang Muyan’s phone rang, Cheng Jianli was certain she saw a spark of joy in her eyes.
Was she really that happy?
Cheng Jianli turned away, unsure of this unfamiliar feeling.
Jiang Muyan thought for a moment and saved the contact’s name as “Wife,” though of course she couldn’t let Cheng Jianli see. She tucked her phone into her bag and called out, “Teacher Cheng.”
Cheng Jianli: “Hmm?”
“Speaking of which, where’s your friend? She’s been gone for so long,” Jiang Muyan glanced around. “The front desk isn’t far, but I didn’t see her when I came in.”
Indeed, Gu Xi still hadn’t returned.
Cheng Jianli said, “I’ll call her.”
As Jiang Muyan watched Cheng Jianli pick up her phone, a sudden pang of jealousy rose in her chest—like someone was stealing her wife.
“Teacher Cheng, can I ask you something?” Jiang Muyan said.
Cheng Jianli turned to her. “What is it?”
Jiang Muyan’s tone sounded like she’d been wronged: “Did you also ask her for her contact info?”
Cheng Jianli: “? Who?”
“That girl.” Jiang Muyan sulkily looked at the name on the test paper.
Cheng Jianli understood: “No.”
Jiang Muyan: “Then why do you have her phone number?”
Though unsure why she needed to explain this, Cheng Jianli answered: “She gave it to me voluntarily.”
“You didn’t refuse?” Jiang Muyan asked in shock.
When no one answered the call, Cheng Jianli put down her phone: “Why should I refuse?”
Jiang Muyan spoke with unjustified confidence: “Because you’re not close with her!”
“It’s fine,” Cheng Jianli said. “We met at a calligraphy competition. I don’t have many friends.”
Still unwilling to concede, Jiang Muyan asked: “Then am I the first person you actively asked for a phone number?”
Cheng Jianli: “…”
“Is this important?” Cheng Jianli frowned.
“Important! Extremely important!” Jiang Muyan grew anxious. “Just tell me, was it me?”
Worried Jiang Muyan might have another episode, Cheng Jianli replied: “It was you.”
Jiang Muyan grinned and pressed on: “Then why did you ask for my number?”
Cheng Jianli took a deep breath and repeated: “…To catch you skipping class.”
After Jiang Muyan repeatedly confirmed she was indeed the first-person Cheng Jianli had asked for contact information, Cheng Jianli decided to go look for Gu Xi.
“She’s been gone too long. I’ll go ask around.”
“I’ll come with you.” Jiang Muyan quickly followed Cheng Jianli to the front counter.
Cheng Jianli asked the server: “Excuse me, have you seen a tall high school girl with a ponytail? She’s wearing a blue school uniform and came with me.”
The server thought for a moment: “Were you sitting at the innermost table?”
Cheng Jianli: “Yes.”
The server put down the iced drink: “I think I saw her leave with some male alphas from your school.”
Male alphas? Jiang Muyan found this strange. Normally, even if Gu Xi went to meet someone, she should have told Cheng Jianli. Why hadn’t she returned for so long?
Could something have happened?
After some thought, Jiang Muyan texted Uncle Liu her location before following Cheng Jianli out of the shop.
Cheng Jianli kept calling Gu Xi with no answer. Watching the dark strands of hair by Cheng Jianli’s ear, Jiang Muyan suddenly said: “Hey, isn’t Ninth High known for being pretty chaotic?”
Cheng Jianli: “What about it?”
Jiang Muyan scratched her head: “Actually, Uncle Liu once investigated Ninth High for me. I heard their students present unusually early, it’s a mixed bag there, really hard to manage…”
“You know about this?” Cheng Jianli looked up at her. “I thought you never paid attention in physiology class.”
Jiang Muyan truly hadn’t listened in physiology class, nor did she understand the dynamics of their ABO world. She only knew Cheng Jianli would eventually present as an omega, while she’d become an alpha.
“No, I mean this shop is pretty remote with few people around, and there are alleys everywhere,” Jiang Muyan said. “Your friend left with some male alphas… I’m worried she might be in trouble.”
Cheng Jianli thought Jiang Muyan’s suggestion wasn’t impossible: “Let’s look for her first. If we can’t find her, I’ll go check her place.”
Jiang Muyan: “You know where she lives?”
“She gave me her address before,” Cheng Jianli paused before adding, “But I’ve never actually been there—”
Suddenly, a noise came from the alley next to them. Startled, Jiang Muyan instinctively ran toward it with Cheng Jianli.
