- Chapter 4 - Compatibility
In the days without work, Jiang Qing experienced a rare sense of leisure.
But she didn’t quite know how to enjoy it.
Her internal clock still woke her at four every morning. The unfamiliar and empty room reminded her that she was no longer the tireless workaholic everyone once knew as Jiang Qing.
There was no packed schedule to run through.
After a simple wash-up, Jiang Qing would open the sheer curtains in the living room, sit in the beanbag chair, find a comfortable position to lean back, and watch the sky slowly brighten through the large floor-to-ceiling windows.
During the day, she couldn’t stay idle. She looked for movies online and watched them one by one based on their ratings.
There was something captivating about the world of film. She could sit and watch for hours, fully focused. Still, there was always a lingering sense of discomfort and emptiness brought on by the lack of work.
Just as she was about to lose patience and ask He Shu to find her any available job that she could start immediately, an audition notice came in for a film called Springtime in March.
On the way there, He Shu was more nervous than Jiang Qing, who was the one actually auditioning.
“Sister He, are your legs alright? Why are they shaking so much?” Jiang Qing asked, feeling the seat cushion under her vibrating.
He Shu looked embarrassed and whispered softly so the driver could not hear her.
“It’s an old problem. When I get nervous, my legs shake on their own.”
“You don’t need to be nervous,” Jiang Qing replied with a small smile as she handed her a plush pillow. She lowered her voice to match He Shu’s tone. “I’ll handle the audition. You just focus on staying calm. Later, help me talk to the director about the contract. We’re almost there. Take a little rest.”
No need to be nervous?
How could Jiang Qing say that so casually?
This was her first real audition. It was also their first major step toward winning a Best Actress award. Even though Jiang Qing was beautiful and poised, her acting skills were still a big question mark.
He Shu suddenly froze as a heavy realization hit her. She had overlooked something important.
When she had been making plans for Jiang Qing’s career, she must have gotten too excited. In her rush, she had forgotten to seriously consider Jiang Qing’s actual acting ability.
No wonder she had felt uneasy over the past few days. It felt like something had been missing, but she just couldn’t put her finger on it until now.
Remembering Jiang Qing’s awkward past performances, He Shu felt a wave of dread. In her mind, she saw an image of Jiang Qing standing on an awards stage, proudly accepting an interview. But that vision shattered instantly, like being crushed under a heavy iron hammer. Everything turned to dust.
He Shu’s heart sank. She hugged the plush pillow tightly and looked at the young woman sitting beside her.
Jiang Qing had her eyes closed, pretending to nap.
He Shu’s legs trembled even more.
Springtime in March was a historical romance film. It told the story of a princess and her handmaiden, both Omegas, who had known each other since childhood and fell in love as they grew up. Despite facing many hardships, the two stayed together. But fate was cruel. In the end, the princess died far from home, forever separated from her lover by life and death.
Jiang Qing was auditioning for the role of the princess.
At the beginning of the film, the princess is cheerful and innocent. She is the beloved daughter of the emperor of the Xiao Dynasty and known as the most beautiful woman in the capital.
Later, after a series of tragic events, she comes to understand the harshness of the world and the burden of being a princess. She stops being carefree, wears a mask to hide her emotions, and tries to follow the example of her older brother, the emperor, by remaining calm and unreadable.
Even her lover, the handmaiden, can no longer understand what she is thinking.
The scene Jiang Qing had to perform was the emotional climax of the film. The handmaiden hears from someone else that the princess is going to marry a prince from a neighboring kingdom. Heartbroken, she confronts the princess. But instead of explaining, the princess speaks coldly and cruelly. Her words make the handmaiden lose all hope. They argue and part with anger.
Jiang Qing’s role was to show the princess’s emotions after the handmaiden had left.
There were no other actors in the scene. No props. Just her. It was a test of pure acting skill. Compared to actual filming, this scene was even more difficult. It required the actress to fully understand the character’s inner emotions and express them through breath, expression, rhythm, and feeling.
If she could handle this scene well, the rest of the film would be no problem.
“You may begin when you’re ready,” Director Chen said calmly.
Jiang Qing gave a small nod.
The emotion disappeared from her eyes. When she looked up again, her gaze had turned deep and unreadable.
At that moment, she was no longer Jiang Qing. She had become Princess Xiao Xu.
Inside the beautifully decorated palace, rare treasures lined the huanghuali wood table. In one corner, an intricately carved incense burner sent thin wisps of sandalwood smoke drifting into the air.
The princess had just sent her lover away, but her face showed no trace of sadness.
She found a locked wooden box from somewhere. Her fingers moved gently across it. There was a quiet click, and she opened the box.
Inside was only a single piece of paper. The edges had yellowed with time. But thanks to careful storage, the paper was smooth and undamaged.
On it was a simple drawing of a girl, done in childish strokes.
Below the drawing were uneven, squiggly letters.
“For Your Highness”
So naive.
The princess stared at the paper, her expression calm. A faint smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
She noticed the smile and paused.
But she did not hide the soft light in her eyes.
Her lips stayed gently curved. Her eyes began to well with tears.
She had thought her heart had turned to stone. After everything she had been through, she believed she could no longer cry. But when she looked at that little drawing, the tears began to fall silently down her cheeks.
Jiang Qing gave a slight bow to the room. The illusion vanished like a tide pulling away.
Her performance was finished.
Everyone was still caught in the emotion of the scene. No one reacted at first. It was He Shu who moved first. She ran up and hugged Jiang Qing tightly.
He Shu’s eyes were red.
“Jiang Qing, you were amazing.”
No one could have imagined that a girl once known only for being pretty and carefree could give such a powerful performance when she got serious.
He Shu had a strong feeling. When this film came out, Jiang Qing would become a star overnight.
She would completely change how people saw her. They would no longer see a clueless beauty. She would prove that she was more than just a pretty face.
She was a hidden gem. With each step forward, she would shine more brightly. Only those with patience would get to witness her full brilliance.
Jiang Qing took the tissue He Shu handed her and gently wiped the tears from her eyes.
She felt truly happy to receive such praise from He Shu.
Being confident was one thing, but hearing recognition from others was something else entirely.
She loved acting. The power of acting was that it could bring someone to life. It allowed her to make the audience feel what the character felt, to cry and laugh along with her.
Director Chen cleared his throat, removed his glasses, and pressed his fingers to the bridge of his nose. He asked Jiang Qing to wait a moment while the team held a brief emergency meeting.
Fifteen minutes later, he asked He Shu to come sign the contract. A staff member went out to inform the other auditioning actors that the casting session was over.
Jiang Qing and He Shu exchanged a smile.
She had done it.
Song Qin Ning sat beside Dr. Li, holding the ABO diagnosis report in her hand.
Dr. Li stared at the computer screen and clicked the refresh button several times. The result stayed the same.
No high compatibility matches found.
In over twenty years of practice, Dr. Li had never seen a case like this. He muttered, “What is going on?”
Yes, what exactly was going on?
Recently, Song Qin Ning had been experiencing irregular heat cycles. She suspected it might be related to her frequent use of Beta simulation injections. Since her work schedule had eased up, she made an appointment with Dr. Li to get a full ABO examination.
After hearing her symptoms, Dr. Li immediately concluded that her irregularities were likely due to the presence of a highly compatible Alpha nearby.
This kind of situation was extremely rare. When an Alpha could influence an Omega’s heat cycle, it usually indicated a pheromone compatibility rate of over 95 percent.
So far, only a few hundred such cases had been reported worldwide.
Compared to the billions of people on Blue Star, it was practically unheard of.
Dr. Li pulled up Song Qin Ning’s previous pheromone analysis and ran it through the compatibility database. But the system couldn’t find any highly compatible Alpha.
Unconvinced, he had her retake the test and enter her pheromone data again. The results remained unchanged.
Dr. Li said, “In that case, there’s only one other possibility. The person’s pheromones have not yet been entered into the database.”
“Try to recall who was with you during the recent episodes of heat cycle irregularity.”
Song Qin Ning responded with certainty. “No one.”
Then, a face flashed briefly through her mind. She corrected herself. “There was one person. But nothing like this ever happened in the past when I met her.”
Dr. Li adjusted his glasses. “It’s possible her pheromones underwent secondary differentiation and haven’t been entered into the system yet. Normally, if someone’s pheromones change, they would be aware of it and should go to a hospital to update their records.”
Song Qin Ning raised her delicate eyebrows slightly.
Was he talking about Jiang Qing?
Impossible.
It was said that people with a high compatibility rate were destined for each other and would become deeply bonded lifelong partners.
But just imagining the possibility of being 95 percent compatible with Jiang Qing made Song Qin Ning feel physically sick.
She was sure Jiang Qing would feel the same.
This kind of aversion was like ice and fire that refused to coexist, or like two magnets with the same pole pushing each other away. There was no way she and Jiang Qing could ever spark romantic feelings.
When she left the consultation room, her assistant, Xiao Yu, was waiting outside.
At that moment, Xiao Yu was browsing the trending searches. Even when Song Qin Ning walked out, she was still whispering to herself in disbelief and frustration.
“What’s wrong?”
Song Qin Ning stood beside her. Her black hair flowed like a waterfall, gently slipping off her shoulder.
“It’s nothing,” Xiao Yu replied quickly.
She fumbled to turn off her phone screen and changed the subject. “Sister Qin Ning, how did your checkup go?”
Song Qin Ning was not someone who liked to pry into others’ privacy.
Seeing that Xiao Yu clearly didn’t want to explain, she didn’t press the issue. She simply answered the question instead. “It’s fine. The doctor said medication will help relieve it.”
On the way back, Xiao Yu kept glancing secretly at Song Qin Ning.
She looked like she was holding something in, her mind clearly elsewhere.
Song Qin Ning could practically see the words I have something to say written across her assistant’s face.
She asked, “Is there something you want to tell me?”
Xiao Yu nodded firmly. She really couldn’t keep it to herself any longer. Besides, Sister Qin Ning would find out about the trending topic eventually. Better that she hears it from her own assistant.
This way, Xiao Yu could stay by her side and be there to support and comfort her.
Xiao Yu said, “I’ll tell you, but please don’t be upset.”
Song Qin Ning replied, “I won’t.”
She didn’t like getting angry, and rarely ever did. The only exceptions were when a certain spoiled and arrogant young lady had pushed her to her limit.
