- Chapter 6 - Susceptible Period
When one person stays completely silent and unmoved, it only makes the other feel a stronger urge to speak their mind.
This wasn’t like her at all.
After Song Qin Ning finished speaking, she suddenly realized how much she had just said to Jiang Qing.
In the past, when Jiang Qing repeatedly provoked her, she knew how to hold back, how to avoid direct conflict.
But now, with Jiang Qing speaking gently and calmly, it was her own emotions that nearly spun out of control.
Jiang Qing listened quietly, patiently, to everything she had said.
Maybe it was better this way.
With such direct rejection and harsh words, even someone as proud as Jiang Qing would likely be done pretending to be friendly just to watch her fall apart. Surely, she would drop the fake kindness and show her real face soon.
Song Qin Ning stood there, waiting for Jiang Qing to grow angry and tear off the mask she had worn for the past few days, finally revealing the sharp and venomous nature beneath.
But instead, Jiang Qing blinked, then let out a soft laugh. The corners of her lips curved slightly.
“You’re right. Someone capable of doing those things to you isn’t even worth being called human,” Jiang Qing said. A faint look of disgust flickered in her eyes.
Song Qin Ning didn’t catch it.
She was too surprised to react.
Jiang Qing really knew how to go for the throat. She even scolded herself without holding back.
For once, Song Qin Ning had no idea how to respond.
You can fight someone who is fearless. But you cannot argue with someone who has no shame.
Still, no matter how harshly Jiang Qing spoke about herself, Song Qin Ning would never forgive or forget what had happened between them.
She was someone with principles and would always stand by her own bottom line.
Quietly, she reminded herself that the more unpredictable an opponent is, the more cautious she needed to be.
Jiang Qing was becoming more cunning, more difficult to deal with. Song Qin Ning knew she needed to stay calm, remain steady, and wait for the right moment. She could not afford to lose control.
“Shall we go?” Jiang Qing asked.
The tense atmosphere that had almost erupted into a full-blown argument seemed to vanish into thin air, all because Jiang Qing had insulted herself instead.
But Song Qin Ning had just finished warning herself not to be fooled.
She kept her face composed and replied, “You go ahead.”
Jiang Qing had no idea what Song Qin Ning had imagined in her mind just now.
But looking at her guarded face, the way she deliberately lowered her brows to look cold and distant, Jiang Qing almost laughed.
She held back the smile, said nothing, and walked toward the front desk.
“Hello. I’d like to pay the bill.”
Jiang Qing handed her card to the receptionist and said, “Please include the beautiful lady beside me in the total as well.”
The receptionist turned to Song Qin Ning. “Miss, which room were you dining in?”
Song Qin Ning pulled out her own card. “No need. I’ll pay for mine separately.”
Jiang Qing gently explained, “It’s nothing else, really. Just my way of apologizing to Miss Song for upsetting her tonight.”
“Would that be alright, Miss Song? I’d like to show you I truly want to make things right.”
She carefully reached out with two fingers and took the card from Song Qin Ning’s hand, then gestured to the staff again to pay both bills together.
Song Qin Ning hadn’t expected Jiang Qing to take her card just to stop her from paying.
But the receptionist was quick. Before Song Qin Ning could take her card back, the bill had already been settled.
Forget it.
It was just one meal.
Even if Jiang Qing was trying to cozy up to her, there was no profit to be made from a simple dinner.
A moment later, Director Chen came out to pay the bill. From a distance, he saw Jiang Qing and figured she had come to settle it.
A thoughtful actress, he thought. Someone who understood social cues.
Director Chen had never paid attention to celebrity gossip, but his impression of Jiang Qing rose a little more in that moment.
Still, since he was the one hosting today, he had to say something for form’s sake.
“Jiang, why are you being so thoughtless? Didn’t I say this meal was on me?”
He walked over quickly, his voice growing louder as he approached.
Jiang Qing could hear the teasing in his tone and responded with a smile. “You’re the senior here. How could I let you spend your own money? I’ll be relying on your support once we’re on set.”
Director Chen waved his hand, but just as he was about to say something else, he noticed Song Qin Ning standing nearby.
He looked at her and she responded politely, “Director Chen.”
Director Chen clapped his hands. “Song, you’re here too? Perfect. We’re heading out for karaoke. You both should join us.”
Song Qin Ning didn’t enjoy the KTV environment. It was loud, crowded, and always filled with lingering cigarette smoke that gave her headaches.
She declined politely, “Director Chen, you all go ahead. I’ll sit this one out.”
“Oh no, looks like I don’t have enough charm to convince Miss Song.”
Song Qin Ning had always struggled with turning down kindness.
She hesitated. If she kept refusing, it might embarrass the director. As she debated what to do, a voice spoke up beside her.
Unexpected, but not entirely surprising.
Jiang Qing placed her hand lightly on Song Qin Ning’s shoulder and said with a bright smile, “Director Chen, we want to go home early to take care of our skin. Those beauty routines take time.”
“You celebrities really take your skincare seriously.”
Unable to persuade the two stars, Director Chen gave up with a snort. “Alright then, go get some rest. But if either of you show up to set looking tired, I’ll be holding you accountable.”
He turned away, humming a folk song as he walked off into the distance.
Jiang Qing withdrew her hand and offered an apology. Then she opened her palm and returned the card to Song Qin Ning.
“Here’s your card.”
“Thanks. And for earlier too,” Song Qin Ning replied, taking the card. After a slight pause, she asked, “Did you already lock in the role of Xiao Xu?”
Jiang Qing nodded. “Yes. You probably won’t believe it, but I actually went through the official audition process.”
Song Qin Ning stayed silent. It was true that she didn’t really believe it.
Jiang Qing continued, “Once we’re on set, we’ll be colleagues. I hope we can work well together.”
“I haven’t confirmed anything yet. I still have to audition.”
“Really? From what Director Chen said earlier, I thought your role was already decided.”
“That’s what he wants, but the investors want to bring in their own people. So Director Chen suggested we audition fairly, then make the final decision.”
Not to mention, Song Qin Ning’s acting skills were top-tier. In the original script, that role belonged to her.
No one could easily take what belonged to the main lead.
Jiang Qing smiled and said, “Don’t worry. That role is definitely yours.”
For once, the coldness that usually surrounded Song Qin Ning seemed to soften. Her eyes held a touch of warmth.
“Will you be there for the audition scene?” she asked.
Her tone was less distant now.
Jiang Qing noticed and teased gently, “Is that an invitation?”
Unusually, Song Qin Ning did not answer with sarcasm. “If you think it is, then it is.”
Jiang Qing knew not to push further. She smiled, her eyes shimmering softly.
“An invitation from Miss Song is something I could never turn down.”
But when the day of the audition arrived,
Jiang Qing did not show up.
She did not even have time to inform Director Chen.
It all started that morning.
Jiang Qing had been watching a movie at home when she suddenly felt extremely thirsty.
She paused the film and went to the water dispenser to get a drink.
The cup felt hot against her fingertips. Before she could take a sip, a violent wave of emotion surged through her body.
Her fingers trembled as she gripped the cup, as if she were about to crush it.
A wave of dizziness swept over her. Her body curled forward slightly, her elbow resting on the edge of the table. The cup tilted, and most of the water spilled out.
Her vision darkened instantly. Feelings of loneliness, irritation, and deep, suffocating pain surged forward like a cloud of black smoke. It wrapped around her, closed in on her, roaring and clawing as if it wanted to swallow her whole.
It felt like she was sinking deep into a sea with no light.
Images buried long ago in her childhood memory came rushing back. Shouting, beatings, and cries flickered before her eyes like a film reel, one frame at a time.
Her eyes, lost and unfocused, turned red, filled with sorrow and hatred.
Despair and loneliness screamed endlessly in her ears.
Jiang Qing felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to destroy everything, a deep, consuming hatred for the world.
Just then, a buzzing sound broke through the madness. Her phone screen lit up and vibrated softly on the coffee table.
The noise snapped her mind back for a brief second.
Some clarity returned to her eyes.
Only then did she slowly realize that this was her Alpha susceptibility period beginning.
Cold sweat had already soaked through her thin sleepwear. She gritted her teeth, struggling to hold onto her sanity, desperately trying to resist the violent darkness surging in her mind.
One elbow braced against the edge of the table, she reached for the phone with her other hand.
Her trembling fingers barely managed to pick it up. She caught a glimpse of a phone number on the screen, but before she could react, that storm of black fog consumed her completely. Her consciousness slipped away.
Jiang Qing found herself standing in the middle of a vast, desolate darkness.
She had forgotten why she was there, or what she was supposed to do.
Her memories were like a dense fog, impossible to part, blurry and distant.
Time passed silently. Somewhere, she heard a voice calling her name.
Who was it?
She moved toward the voice, but the darkness stretched endlessly like a Mobius strip. There was no end in sight. It felt like she could walk forever and still never reach the edge.
Fear and confusion filled her heart.
Still, the voice calling her name never stopped.
Staring into the emptiness ahead, she could clearly hear the steady beating of her heart and the rush of bl00d through her veins.
Something told her that what she needed to find was right in front of her.
Without hesitating any longer, she began to run toward it with all her strength.
She didn’t know how long she had been running, but finally, she saw a beam of light.
Bright, piercing light tore through the darkness and surged toward her.
She ran straight into it, without looking back, without hesitation.
“You’re awake?”
He Shu’s eyes lit up with relief.
The faint smell of disinfectant hung in the air. Above her, the yellowing ceiling and a plain lightbulb came into view.
Jiang Qing tried to move, but her body had no strength.
He Shu quickly held her down.
“You just finished an IV. Your body hasn’t recovered yet. Don’t move around too much.”
Jiang Qing gave up the idea of sitting up for now and stayed still.
“Sister He Shu, can you help me raise the back of the bed a little? It feels a bit strange talking to you while lying flat like this.”
The hospital’s private room was well-equipped. He Shu adjusted the bed height quickly and efficiently.
Now Jiang Qing and He Shu were almost eye level.
“Sister He Shu, were you the one who brought me to the hospital?” Jiang Qing asked, her voice slightly hoarse.
“Yes, it was me. Your susceptibility period must have hit you hard. You actually passed out cold. When I came in, you were already on the floor. No matter how I called you, you wouldn’t wake up.”
Thinking back to that moment, He Shu still felt a chill. As an Alpha herself, she knew how dangerous that situation could have been.
“Your pheromone pressure was insane. The moment I stepped in, my hair stood on end. I almost wanted to fight you first just to let off steam before I even thought about helping you.”
Jiang Qing couldn’t help but laugh. “Sorry, Sister He Shu. I didn’t realize I had released my pheromones.”
“It’s alright. I was only half-joking. During susceptibility periods, Alphas go through extreme hormonal surges. Most aren’t even fully conscious. Some people go out swinging knives in the street. You think anyone in that state cares about leaking pheromones?”
