When it came to pheromones, Jiang Qing suddenly remembered that her own scent was probably different from the original host’s.
She only realized this after Song Qin Ning had brought it up with a confused look on her face.
Hearing that name again, Jiang Qing couldn’t help but remember something else. She still hadn’t informed Director Chen that she wouldn’t be able to attend the joint scene.
She cleared her throat and asked He Shu to bring her phone over.
Then she explained, “I haven’t had a chance to tell the director that I won’t be going.”
Her palm was slightly damp from being under the blanket for too long.
It felt sticky and uncomfortable.
Only after wiping her fingers clean with a tissue from the nightstand did Jiang Qing reach for the phone.
As she reached for it, He Shu spoke.
“Actually, the reason I got there so fast was because Director Chen contacted me.”
Jiang Qing looked up in confusion.
He Shu continued, “Song Qin Ning noticed you didn’t show up and asked the director about it. That’s when he realized you were missing and gave me, your agent, a call.”
As she spoke, He Shu kept her eyes on Jiang Qing.
She watched closely, expecting some kind of reaction. But the famously temperamental young lady didn’t get angry when she heard Song Qin Ning’s name. In fact, she looked genuinely interested.
He Shu blinked.
This was something new. Jiang Qing seemed to have developed immunity to the name Song Qin Ning.
He Shu had been worried that Jiang Qing might flip out about the new work arrangements.
Now, she felt relieved.
While the timing was right, He Shu decided to press on.
“Oh, by the way, I booked a magazine shoot for you.”
Jiang Qing rested her chin on her hand and nodded. “Alright.”
Work made her happy.
Just like how some people enjoyed slacking off at their jobs, she enjoyed being busy with hers.
He Shu kept her tone light, careful not to trigger Jiang Qing’s sensitive temper.
“The shoot includes three people. Your partners will be the two actresses from your upcoming film. Song Qin Ning and Huang Huijun.”
Jiang Qing nodded again. “Sounds good. I’m fine with that.”
Working with beautiful women only made things more enjoyable.
It was a blessing. The young lady really had changed.
For the first time, He Shu looked at Jiang Qing with the warm pride of a mother.
Jiang Qing gave her a signature harmless smile.
With her large, water-clear eyes, she blinked sweetly and asked, “Sister He Shu, do you have Song Qin Ning’s WeChat? I want to thank her personally.”
Without hesitation, He Shu forwarded the contact card and gave Jiang Qing a thumbs-up. She was proud of how much her artist had matured and learned to handle things gracefully.
Jiang Qing placed her hand gently over her chest to express gratitude for the compliment. In her heart, she accepted it with satisfaction.
He Shu still had other things to take care of. Seeing that Jiang Qing was recovering well, she stayed a little longer before finally leaving.
After watching He Shu leave, Jiang Qing sent a friend request to Song Qin Ning on WeChat.
There was no response right away.
Jiang Qing wasn’t in a hurry. She opened Weibo and scrolled through it casually.
In the “Followers” section, she noticed a few new requests.
When she clicked on them, she saw that they were staff members from Director Chen’s team.
She followed each of them back without hesitation.
She didn’t care what kind of online reaction this might trigger.
About ten minutes later, a WeChat notification appeared.
Song Qin Ning had accepted her friend request.
Jiang Qing quickly typed a message. It was polite, sincere, and just the right touch of charm.
“Miss Song, thank you so much for today. If it weren’t for you, I might have stayed passed out for who knows how long.”
She added a meme from her favorite stickers folder. It was a little kitten lying on the ground with teary eyes.
Jiang Qing liked to use memes when chatting.
No matter who she was talking to, she believed memes were a perfect way to break the ice.
She saw the other side had started typing.
Jiang Qing waited, not sure what Song Qin Ning was hesitating about. When no message came through, she backed out of the chat and quickly saved a few more rabbit-themed stickers from Weibo.
Song Qin Ning’s profile picture was a cool-looking cartoon bunny with an X-shaped mouth.
Not long after, a message came through.
“As long as you’re alright.”
A short, polite message. Just four words and a period.
On the surface, it matched Song Qin Ning’s image as the ultimate cool and aloof beauty.
But the content made it clear, Song Qin Ning must have known something had happened to her, which was why she sent that message.
Jiang Qing genuinely sighed with admiration. She had not misjudged her. Song Qin Ning really was beautiful inside and out. Cold on the outside, but warm-hearted underneath.
Jiang Qing lightly tapped her fingers on the chat box, a soft smile forming at the corners of her lips.
She typed, “Was Miss Song’s audition successful?”
“It went well. I’ve been confirmed for the role of A Nuan.”
A Nuan was the other lead in The Warm Spring of March.
Jiang Qing replied,
“Congratulations.jpg”
“Thanks.”
Jiang Qing continued typing,
“Looks like we’ll be colleagues soon. I’m not the strongest actor, so I’ll be relying on your guidance.”
This time, the reply came quickly.
“If your acting were average, why would Director Chen choose you?”
Jiang Qing paused.
She had miscalculated.
Same old formula.
Still the same thorny rose.
