- Chapter 11 - So it's an Incurable Disease
“She just never expected this rundown, battered body of hers would also be afflicted with such a serious illness.”

With the silver coins in her pocket, Xue Cheng didn’t wander around like a headless fly. She had already memorized the location of Wang Long’s smith shop on her way back, so she headed straight there.
Wang Long was in the middle of a fervent work session, pounding away at the iron. He looked a little surprised to see her and was about to ask what she needed.
But Xue Cheng, with a look of urgency, spoke first. “Brother Wang, do you know where I can find a doctor? My wife isn’t feeling too well…”
She was so visibly anxious, she looked like she was about to grab hold of him.
“Oh! There’s the Guang’an Clinic right at the start of South River Street,” Wang Long answered without hesitation. He then realized that since Xue Cheng was asking him, she probably didn’t know the way. He found it strange that someone wouldn’t know where to find a doctor, but this wasn’t the time to dwell on it.
He turned and shouted towards the back of the house, “Da Niu!” Then, he turned back to Xue Cheng and explained, “I’m worried you don’t know the way and will waste time, so I’ll have my boy take you.”
“That would be a great help.” Xue Cheng bowed and cupped her hands in thanks. “Thank you so much, Brother Wang. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know what to do.”
Her accent was a little strange, but Wang Long couldn’t quite put his finger on what was off. He was also uncomfortable accepting such a formal show of gratitude for what he considered a small favor. He stepped back and waved a hand. “No need, no need.”
At that moment, a boy of about eight years old came clattering out. He bore a striking resemblance to Wang Long, especially when he smiled—it was instantly clear they were father and son.
“Dad, you called me?” The eight-year-old’s voice was still full of childlike innocence.
Wang Long patted his shoulder. “Go and take your Auntie Xue to the Guang’an Clinic.”
“Okay,” Da Niu replied crisply. He turned, greeted Xue Cheng, and without another word, led her down a different street.
Before she left, Xue Cheng, still uneasy, asked Wang Long, “Brother Wang, if you have a moment, could you keep an eye on the outside of my house? Just in case some troublemakers try to climb the wall again.”
“No problem, you go on and don’t worry.” Wang Long knew the previous incident was outrageous. He understood she was concerned about leaving her unwell wife alone and readily agreed. “I’ll ask my to keep an eye out for you in a bit.”
“Thank you.” Xue Cheng didn’t have time to say more. Eager to get there and back quickly, she hurriedly thanked Wang Long again and followed Da Niu.
Even though the boy was full of energy, his legs were short and his steps were small, so Xue Cheng had no trouble keeping up.
Wang Long seemed reserved and steady, and his son was just like him. Da Niu was quiet and a bit shy, not saying a word the whole way, just leading the way with his head down.
As for Xue Cheng, her heart was in a constant flutter, preoccupied with the little mute beauty she had left at home. She wasn’t in the mood to start a conversation with an eight-year-old boy.
For one of them, the walk felt like a mere moment; for the other, it felt like an eternity. It was a matter of mood.
Da Niu pointed ahead at a sign, his voice muffled. “Auntie Xue, that’s the Guang’an Clinic.”
“Good boy,” Xue Cheng said. She pulled a small piece of silver from her pocket and slipped it into his hand as a thank you for guiding her. Without waiting for him to object, she simply placed it in his palm and walked past him into the clinic. She didn’t have time to perform the three-hundred-round dance of giving and refusing a gift.
The Guang’an Clinic was a small shop. Inside, an old doctor was grinding herbs. As soon as Xue Cheng entered, she urgently said, “Doctor, my wife’s ‘period’ has come. Would you be able to come and see her?”
The old doctor was a male Omega. Hearing this, he stroked his chin. It wasn’t really appropriate for him to go. He also found the pair of female Omegas a bit odd. It was just a ‘period’; they should just close their door and bond with each other. But he had been practicing medicine for years and had seen all kinds of strange customers.
He calmly looked up at Xue Cheng. “I’ll just prescribe a few doses of medicine for you; there’s no need for me to make a special trip.”
Xue Cheng shook her head, explaining anxiously, “Her symptoms are a bit unusual. She already had a ‘heat’ once before, and we… we temporarily bonded, but she went into ‘heat’ again less than half a day later…”
As a modern person trying to speak in the old-fashioned way, Xue Cheng felt a little awkward, but she tried her best to explain Liu Wuyuan’s situation clearly to avoid any misdiagnosis.
The doctor thought for a moment, then cleared his throat and called out, “Zhu-er.”
“Coming!” a clear voice chirped in response. A girl with messy hair stood up from behind the counter. She must have been bent over looking for something, which was why Xue Cheng hadn’t noticed her before.
The old doctor gestured toward the girl, who looked to be around sixteen or seventeen. “This is my apprentice. I’ll let her go with you to take a look.”
Worried that Xue Cheng might not trust her, he added, “She’s been following me to see patients since she was a child. Her medical skills are quite good…”
Xue Cheng nodded, then turned to the young woman. “Then I’ll leave it to you, Miss Zhu-er.”
“Oh, it’s nothing. Treating people is a doctor’s duty.”
Zhu-er was delighted that Xue Cheng hadn’t looked down on her. With a big smile, she tidied her messy hair, pulled out the medicine box from under the counter, and quickly prepared a few doses of medicine from the drawers of the cabinet. Only after she had everything ready did she follow Xue Cheng out of the Guang’an Clinic.
When they stepped outside, Da Niu was still waiting by the door. The boy was probably worried Xue Cheng would forget the way back, so he had stayed there to guide her. Xue Cheng simply smiled, praised him, and the three of them set off for home without delay.
From a distance, Da Niu spotted his mother sitting on a small wooden stool in front of the Xue family home, sorting vegetables. He happily called out, “Mom!”
It seemed Wang Long had taken Xue Cheng’s request seriously and had asked his wife to keep an eye on things. When Xue Cheng got closer, she thanked Mrs. Wang profusely.
Mrs. Wang ruffled Da Niu’s hair as he ran to her. She laughed heartily and said, “There’s no need to be so polite, sister. It’s nothing at all. You should hurry home and check on your wife.”
With that, Mrs. Wang and Da Niu headed back to their own house.

Xue Cheng pushed open her front door and invited Zhu-er inside. She quickly checked to make sure everything was in order, then approached Liu Wuyuan’s room. She gently knocked on the door and spoke in a voice much softer than when she talked to others. “Wife, I’m back.”
With a stranger present, she didn’t feel it was right to use Liu Wuyuan’s full name.
Inside, Liu Wuyuan heard her voice and opened the door. She saw that Xue Cheng had indeed brought a doctor back. The young woman behind her, though she looked quite young, was carrying a medicine box, making her profession clear. Not wanting to embarrass Xue Cheng in front of a stranger, she offered a gentle, weak smile.
Xue Cheng was filled with a sudden, inexplicable feeling of joy. She felt like a good little dog that had just been rewarded by its owner, her eyebrows practically jumping with happiness. She was unaware of her own expression, but the other two took notice.
Zhu-er, not knowing the full story, silently marveled at how good the couple’s relationship seemed to be.
As a Beta, she couldn’t smell their pheromones. She asked Liu Wuyuan to sit down and, placing a thin silk scarf over her wrist, began to take her pulse. At first, she seemed calm, but as the minutes passed and the pulse became clearer in her mind, she frowned slightly. She then let out a nearly imperceptible sigh and looked at the silent Liu Wuyuan with a hint of sympathy.
Xue Cheng felt a wave of anxiety. Although she didn’t want to meet a tragic end at the hands of the story’s heroine, she genuinely didn’t want Liu Wuyuan to suffer. She knew better than to interrupt at that moment, so she held back her questions.
Once Zhu-er finished the diagnosis and pulled her hand back, Xue Cheng quickly asked, “Miss Zhu-er, what is it? My wife…”
Zhu-er took out the medicine she had prepared earlier, then found paper and an ink stone to write a new prescription. “Your wife’s illness is likely one she’s had since birth,” she explained simply.
She continued to write the prescription as she spoke to both Xue Cheng and Liu Wuyuan. “One in a hundred thousand Omegas might be born with this ‘Spring Aversion’ illness. From the moment they differentiate, their ‘dewfall periods’ are different from others. They might not have one for months, or they might have several in a single month.”
She paused, looking at Liu Wuyuan’s calm face with what looked like a flicker of sorrow, but she continued. “And that’s just the mildest symptom. An Omega with ‘Spring Aversion’ can’t fully suppress their ‘heat’ even after bonding with an Alpha during their ‘dewfall period’. This means they’ll need to bond repeatedly. The older they get, the more severe the symptoms become. If the first bond lasts half a day, later on, it might only last half an hour.”
“Because of the pheromone issues, it also leads to other physical problems. For example, blindness is one of them,” she added.
She finished speaking just as she finished writing the prescription. She blew on it to dry the ink and handed it to Xue Cheng. “I’m afraid this ‘Spring Aversion’ is almost a terminal illness,” she sighed. “We can only try to delay it. There’s no effective cure we’ve found yet.”
Xue Cheng took the prescription, staring blankly at Zhu-er, then turned to look at Liu Wuyuan, who had shown no reaction to the news.
It wasn’t that she was stunned by her own illness. Liu Wuyuan had never even imagined she would be able to speak again. She just never expected this broken, pitiful body of hers would also be afflicted with such a serious disease.
The prescription Zhu-er left was meant to slow the progression of Liu Wuyuan’s symptoms in the long run. As Zhu-er explained, it could only delay the illness, not cure it.
After Zhu-er left, Xue Cheng went to the kitchen and silently started a fire to brew the medicine for Liu Wuyuan. She had some survival knowledge from her past life, so starting a fire was easy for her.
What she didn’t know was that the original owner of her body was utterly useless at household chores. This seemingly effortless act of hers was full of clues.
Liu Wuyuan quietly watched her skillfully start the fire and brew the medicine, which only solidified her suspicions.
