- Chapter 13 - The Wives Go Shopping
“The very same sights Xue Cheng saw every day while grocery shopping suddenly seemed interesting. She pulled Liu Wuyuan from one stall to the next, eager to see everything.”
******
Ten days had passed since Xue Cheng arrived in this world, and she had a basic grasp of her surroundings. She was in a country called Chu, and the small county town where the original owner lived was in the fertile central plains. It was a relatively prosperous area.
It wasn’t too far from the capital, Xijing. Xue Cheng was already making plans to save enough money to take Liu Wuyuan there. After all, as the nation’s capital, the medical care and resources would be far superior to what was available in this small town.
Liu Wuyuan was unaware of Xue Cheng’s plans. She was simply amazed at how much better her life had become since the change in her wife. Not only had Xue Cheng taken on more chores to care for her during her “dewfall period,” but she also didn’t demand anything from her afterward. In fact, as soon as her “dewfall period” was completely over, Xue Cheng insisted on taking her out to buy new clothes.
The original owner was a piece of trash. After initially picking up Liu Wuyuan and buying her two new outfits, she had mostly just altered her own old, worn-out clothes for Liu Wuyuan to wear. The original owner was taller than Liu Wuyuan, and the style of a female Qianyuan’s (Alpha) clothes was quite different from a female Kunze’s (Omega). The altered garments looked strange on her. Had it not been for Liu Wuyuan’s stunning, god-defying beauty, she probably couldn’t have pulled off those strange, faded clothes. Her cloth shoes, washed until they were a faded white, showed just how clean and particular Liu Wuyuan was; she would carefully wipe off even a speck of mud. Despite her poor circumstances, she had always tried to live with dignity.
Seeing this, Xue Cheng felt a pang of sympathy. It wasn’t just about gaining a larger return from the system; she genuinely wanted to give Liu Wuyuan a better life. How could such a beautiful little thing wear the original owner’s ugly, tattered old clothes? She should be dressed like any other young lady her age, in bright red and fresh green, in brand-new, lovely garments.
She shouldn’t have to wear only a simple wooden hairpin in her hair, either. Gold, silver, pearls, and jade—all those rare and beautiful things, Xue Cheng thought, should adorn her pretty wife.
Liu Wuyuan was reluctant to go out. Other people always looked at her with a mix of lecherous desire and pity, as if their eyes were telling her, “Yes, that’s right, you’re a mute nobody.”
She couldn’t fight back; she couldn’t speak. If she were to retaliate with a cold stare, it would only pique the interest of certain Qianyuan, who would then feel emboldened to stare at her with vulgar, sickening gazes. That would only make her seem more pathetic, and Liu Wuyuan refused to be seen that way.
Xue Cheng saw the resistance in her eyes. She thought for a moment and took a cautious step forward. When Liu Wuyuan didn’t instinctively retreat, a small burst of joy filled her heart. She took Liu Wuyuan’s hands in her own, her larger palms warming her slightly cold ones.
“I want to take you to buy some new clothes and shoes,” she said. “And some fashionable jewelry. I also want to take you to see what kind of rouge and perfume all the other ladies are using.”
Xue Cheng’s gaze was clean and clear, something the original owner could never possess. Liu Wuyuan unintentionally looked up and met her eyes, seeing the genuine concern and expectation there. She froze for a moment, then looked away, her lips pressed together, unsure how to respond. She then remembered she was mute and couldn’t respond even if she wanted to. She felt a certain “what’s the point” kind of despair.
In Xue Cheng’s eyes, this looked like a cute pout, a stubbornness that softened her usual cool, solitary demeanor.
“Okay,” Xue Cheng said, lowering her head and pretending to listen intently. After a moment, she smiled brightly. “I heard that! My wife said yes.”
Liu Wuyuan turned to look at her, her eyes filled with a cold glare. The look was direct, clearly telling Xue Cheng: Don’t you dare make fun of a mute person. She pulled her hands out of Xue Cheng’s grasp, her right hand twitching, ready to show Xue Cheng that even though she couldn’t speak, she had plenty of ways to make her understand exactly what she meant.
Xue Cheng stuck out her tongue and quickly offered a conciliatory smile. “I won’t tease you anymore, but can we just go out once? Please?”
She glanced outside, a wide smile on her face, radiating pure joy. “Look, the weather is so nice today. It’s a waste of a good day to not go out shopping!”
She didn’t behave like a proper Qianyuan at all. She turned back to Liu Wuyuan, tugging on her sleeve with a playful, pleading look in her eyes. “Please? Please, pretty sister?”
Xue Cheng didn’t see anything wrong with calling her “sister.” According to the novel, Liu Wuyuan was indeed a little older than her, so calling her that was fine. The courage to call her “Wife” came from their nominal status as a married couple and their recent intimate experience. But after Liu Wuyuan coldly rejected her outing proposal, she felt too shy to use that term again and could only sheepishly call her “pretty sister.”
However, Liu Wuyuan felt that this form of address was even more inappropriate. And when Xue Cheng whined and pleaded, her soft voice was like sticky honey, making her feel incredibly soft-hearted and her ears warm. A faint blush crept up her delicate earlobes. Liu Wuyuan really wanted to tell her that a Qianyuan should not be so… so flighty.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that this person was still no good, but she couldn’t stand Xue Cheng’s constant pestering. If she didn’t agree, Xue Cheng would probably keep whining and clinging to her. It wasn’t that her heart had softened; she just found Xue Cheng annoying. She wanted some peace and quiet, and since she couldn’t get rid of this clingy little Qianyuan, she could only reluctantly agree to go shopping with her. It was the quickest way to get her off her back and have some peace.
With that thought, Liu Wuyuan finally left the house with Xue Cheng.
The number of times the two of them had gone out together was remarkably low. The original owner never liked taking Liu Wuyuan out, since a person who spent every day in brothels certainly couldn’t bring his wife along. In the ten days since Xue Cheng’s arrival, they had only gone out together once, to the magistrate’s office. Since then, Liu Wuyuan had stayed at home.
These past few days, Xue Cheng had greeted Wang Long and his family every time she passed the smith shop on her daily trips to buy groceries, so they had grown familiar with her. Also, since her arrival, she hadn’t gone to the brothels during the day. The Wang family’s impression of her had improved significantly, so when they saw her, Wang Long smiled and greeted her warmly.
“Sister Xue, off to buy groceries again?”
Xue Cheng smiled back. “Not today. Today, I’m taking my wife to buy some new clothes.”
After she spoke, she stepped aside to reveal Liu Wuyuan behind her. Wang Long saw Liu Wuyuan following her and heard that she was taking her wife shopping. He figured maybe the woman had finally come to her senses and learned to cherish her wife.
“Well, that’s great then. I won’t hold you and your wife up.” Wang Long said, waving the iron hammer in his hand to signal that he was going back to work.
Xue Cheng didn’t stand on ceremony. She stopped the small talk and led Liu Wuyuan toward the main street.
As they walked, Xue Cheng saw the same things she saw every day while grocery shopping, but today everything seemed interesting. She pulled Liu Wuyuan from one stall to the next.
When she found a small trinket she liked, she would pick it up and ask Liu Wuyuan if she liked it. Although Liu Wuyuan shook her head every time, Xue Cheng could tell from her eyes which items she genuinely liked and which she didn’t. She bought the ones she liked and put the others back. While her system rewarded her for spending money on Liu Wuyuan, and the more she spent, the better, Xue Cheng had no intention of buying things Liu Wuyuan didn’t want. Aside from necessities, she wanted every penny she spent on her to bring her joy, not unhappiness.
The pure-hearted little Alpha had never been in a relationship before but had somehow ended up with a wife. She didn’t say it aloud, but in her heart, she was determined to take good care of her wife and make her healthy and happy.
She remembered that the main purpose of their outing was to buy new clothes for Liu Wuyuan. The two of them went into a clothing shop, and Xue Cheng gently pushed Liu Wuyuan toward the racks. The shopkeeper was very enthusiastic and started showing them clothes, though she was mainly trying to sell female Qianyuan clothes to Xue Cheng. Xue Cheng “tsked” in annoyance at the unobservant shopkeeper.
She said in a cold voice, “I’m buying clothes for my wife.”
The shopkeeper glanced at the beautiful, aloof-looking woman following Xue Cheng. She mumbled to herself that she had never seen a Qianyuan so enthusiastically accompany their Kunze shopping, with the Kunze looking so distant and reluctant. Usually, it was the other way around: the Qianyuan waited impatiently outside, occasionally yelling at their partner to hurry up, and even grumbling that the clothes their Kunze picked were “ugly” if they were too expensive.
But she was running a business and didn’t want to offend a customer. She put on a smile and turned to Liu Wuyuan. “Miss, please come with me. These are some new outfits that just came in. The fabric is the most fashionable available right now.”
The owner chattered on, excitedly introducing the clothes to Liu Wuyuan. Liu Wuyuan was a mute and wanted to refuse, but could only shake her head lightly to say, “No thank you.”
The shopkeeper was flustered, thinking she had never met such a difficult customer. But Liu Wuyuan wasn’t rejecting the clothes because she didn’t like them; she just felt she didn’t need anything so nice. Since the fabric was the most fashionable, the clothes must be expensive. She had a good idea of how much money Xue Cheng had in her pocket, as a Qianyuan who relied on her family for support and spent every day in brothels. Even with the intention of buying her new clothes, she probably couldn’t afford anything better than the cheapest coarse cloth.
