- Chapter 14 - A Happy Shopping Day
“The feeling of spending more and more money and getting more and more back was so exhilarating, Xue Cheng didn’t want to go home.”
*****
After several days of spending and using the system’s “rebate system” feature, Xue Cheng had accumulated nearly 150 taels of silver. It wasn’t a huge fortune, but it wasn’t a small amount either.
Since the money she spent on the heroine came back to her, multiplied, Xue Cheng wasn’t worried about how much she spent today. The system would cover the whole bill. Xue Cheng had tried to ask if there was a limit to the rewards or if it might disrupt the world’s economy, causing trouble. The system told her not to worry. As long as she wasn’t spending herself to death, she should spend with abandon. There was no limit to the system’s returns, only a limit to her own spending.
With that assurance, Xue Cheng felt confident. That’s why, even with her wife’s medical bills in mind, she was bold enough to take her out to buy new clothes. There was no way she could go broke.
So, Xue Cheng patted her chest and told Liu Wuyuan, “Wife, try on whatever you like. We have money.”
She said it, and as if afraid Liu Wuyuan wouldn’t believe her, she obediently took out all her cash. The large and small silver coins, plus the broken pieces, added up to 150 taels. Xue Cheng stared at her with wide, expectant eyes, like a loyal puppy bringing a prized treasure back to its owner. The pure, clean look in her eyes was unnerving.
Liu Wuyuan took the silver, lowered her eyes, and hid the complex emotions swirling within them. With this money, she could easily run away and leave Xue Cheng far behind. But… should she really leave now?
This new Xue Cheng wasn’t bad to her; in fact, she was good to her in every way. Liu Wuyuan was torn. On one hand, the risks of running away were too great. On the other, she wasn’t sure what the future would hold if she stayed. This Xue Cheng was a different person, but what if one day, without her knowledge, the cruel demon who had hurt and tormented her came back?
Xue Cheng had no idea what she was thinking. She just gave the shopkeeper a look, urging her to continue selling. The shopkeeper caught the hint and launched into her sales pitch with renewed enthusiasm. Xue Cheng also did her part, saying things like, “My wife looks so beautiful in this one,” and “Such a beautiful dress should only be worn by my beautiful wife.”
Her sweet-talk flowed effortlessly, making Liu Wuyuan’s head spin. The shopkeeper, grinning like a flower, showered her with more compliments. In the end, Liu Wuyuan wasn’t sure how she was convinced to buy several ready-made outfits and even chose a few bolts of fabric for the tailor to make some more.
Xue Cheng’s mouth didn’t stop, chattering about how it was hot in the summer and she’d need more clothes to change into. Xue Cheng also noticed that Liu Wuyuan didn’t seem to have any well-fitting underclothes. She figured she probably didn’t have many intimate pieces like a bodice or underpants either. The original owner was an ignorant, cruel, and cheap scumbag who certainly wouldn’t have thought to buy so many things for Liu Wuyuan, nor would she have been willing to spend the money.
So, after the clothing store, Xue Cheng took Liu Wuyuan to a shop specializing in undergarments. Liu Wuyuan didn’t realize what the sign “Qiqing Pavilion” meant at first. But the moment she stepped inside, her eyes were assaulted by a riot of colorful and varied underthings. Her eyes widened, and she tried to pull Xue Cheng back out.
Xue Cheng knew Omegas tended to be shyer and more reserved, but this was important. These were the clothes closest to the skin, so they had to be well-fitting, soft, and comfortable. Liu Wuyuan, however, seemed to have misunderstood, thinking Xue Cheng was trying to be a pervert in broad daylight. She looked at her with utter rejection, her brows furrowed so tightly they could have squashed a fly.
“…”
Xue Cheng pursed her lips and explained, looking a little helpless. “I’m just trying to buy clothes properly. It’s not what you think…”
In Liu Wuyuan’s eyes, this explanation was utterly weak. Against the backdrop of a store full of lingerie, it made Xue Cheng seem entirely ill-intentioned.
The store wasn’t very busy, but the two of them were at a stalemate at the door, which naturally drew a few curious glances. Liu Wuyuan was weaker and couldn’t get past this stubborn little Qianyuan. In her helplessness, she finally yielded to Xue Cheng and stepped inside. Her eyes, however, looked at the ceiling, the floor, and the other people—anywhere but at the lingerie that felt like it would burn her eyes. The range of styles, from the scandalous to the demure, with various patterns, was something she quickly looked away from the moment her eyes happened to graze them.
Xue Cheng was at a loss, so she took it upon herself to pick things out. She wasn’t familiar with Liu Wuyuan’s size, but she had a general idea from looking at her, and from their close embrace, she knew there was a comfortable softness to her. Feeling too embarrassed to ask, she poked Liu Wuyuan on the shoulder and shyly held up two pieces of lingerie: one a simple, innocent-looking style, and the other a piece that made Liu Wuyuan’s face flush with embarrassment.
Though they were wives, Liu Wuyuan was a genuine virgin. The original owner had certainly had lecherous thoughts about her, but she’d been replaced before she could act on them. Liu Wuyuan shot Xue Cheng a glare, but she reached out and took the simple, soft white one on the left. Xue Cheng rubbed her nose, too shy to mention that she secretly preferred the more alluring style. But she wasn’t going to let that eye-catching red one go, either. She quietly told the shopkeeper that once they had the measurements, she’d take that one too. The shopkeeper happily agreed—it would be foolish to turn down money.
Liu Wuyuan, her face still red, went into the dressing room. Xue Cheng wandered around, touching things. She had spent over eighty taels of silver at the clothing store, and the system had given her a tenfold return. With more than eight hundred taels, she was a tycoon. Everything looked good, and she wanted to buy it all. Her beautiful wife had a great body, and she didn’t want to waste it. She planned to have Liu Wuyuan try things on, and then they’d go to the jewelry and cosmetics shops to buy even more. She, Xue Cheng, could finally experience the life of a nouveau riche.
When Liu Wuyuan finished, she told the shopkeeper what needed to be adjusted, and a servant girl took her measurements and made a note of them. She had picked out two pieces for herself, but when she turned around, she saw Xue Cheng holding a dozen other pieces of lingerie and a few pairs of underpants.
Liu Wuyuan: “…”
She was shocked, but she couldn’t say anything.
“Hehe,” Xue Cheng said, scratching her head awkwardly, not even bothering to suggest putting anything back. The message was clear: she was buying all of them. The shopkeeper was overjoyed and wrote up the bill. Customers who bought so many items at once were rare, so she even gave them a discount.
Xue Cheng had given all the silver to Liu Wuyuan, who now had nearly seventy taels after their spending spree of more than eighty taels. Liu Wuyuan was going to keep the money for a rainy day, as Xue Cheng hadn’t asked for it back. But now…
Since the items were for her, Liu Wuyuan was about to pay, but Xue Cheng stopped her. Xue Cheng handed her own silver to the shopkeeper and said, “You should keep some money on you, just in case. I’ll pay.” Even though they were buying small items, the price was still quite high.
Xue Cheng also picked out a few pieces for herself. She found the original owner’s clothes uncomfortable and scratchy. Compared to what she bought for Liu Wuyuan, she was being incredibly stingy with herself.
Liu Wuyuan was utterly baffled by this new Xue Cheng. She seemed to be going out of her way to be good to her, asking for nothing in return and treating her better than she treated herself. And where did she get all this money? The original owner was a lazy bum who would have starved to death if her family hadn’t supported her; she certainly couldn’t have saved up this much silver. It had to be the new Xue Cheng’s money. Why would this person spend so much money and effort to win over someone else’s wife and live in someone else’s body?
Liu Wuyuan remembered some strange folk tales she had read in the original owner’s books. Some told of mountain spirits and demons who could take on a human form, or of ghosts who returned to life in a dead body. She glanced down at Xue Cheng’s feet. There was a shadow, which meant this soul had fully possessed the body. Strangely, if this were true, Liu Wuyuan should be afraid, but when she looked up and saw the current Xue Cheng’s beaming face, holding a pile of her new intimate clothes, she felt no fear at all.
This purchase cost Xue Cheng over 100 taels. The shopkeeper said they would deliver the clothes once they were altered, and Xue Cheng nodded, paid, took the receipt, and led Liu Wuyuan to continue their shopping spree.
All the while, the system’s notifications were ringing in her head. The feeling of spending more and more money and getting more back was so exhilarating, Xue Cheng didn’t want to go home. Liu Wuyuan was so flustered by all the spending that she finally had to grab Xue Cheng’s hand to stop her. Xue Cheng reluctantly gave in but looked incredibly disappointed. Liu Wuyuan couldn’t figure out this person, if she really was a ghost or a spirit, who got so much money? Could dead people exchange their paper offerings for silver to spend in the human world?
She was afraid it was some kind of trick. What if the silver turned into rocks or paper money when the shopkeepers looked at it later and they came to their door demanding payment?
Meanwhile, Xue Cheng was happily doing the math in her head. With today’s shopping spree, she had bought lots of clothes, jewelry, perfume, and rouge for the heroine. Soon, her little mute beauty would be dressed beautifully every day, no longer wearing those ill-fitting, faded, old clothes. The thought of it put her in a great mood. This pure-hearted little Alpha felt like she was doing a pretty good job for her first time taking care of a wife.
When they got home, Liu Wuyuan’s legs and back were aching from walking all day. She went to her room to rest. Xue Cheng boiled some water and brought a bucket to her door.
“Wife, you’ve been walking all day. Come soak in this hot water and relax, so your feet don’t swell up.”
She spoke loudly, worried Liu Wuyuan wouldn’t hear her. Her voice echoed through the small courtyard. Liu Wuyuan opened the door with a strange expression, looked at her, and then slowly pointed to the room. Xue Cheng understood that her wife was too tired to carry it inside herself. She eagerly carried the bucket to the side of the bed.
Then, turning to Liu Wuyuan, she said, “I’m going to make dinner.” She scratched her head. “Are dumplings okay? I don’t really know how to make anything else.”
She was the picture of a dutiful wife. Liu Wuyuan nodded. With someone to cook and care for her, what reason did she have to complain?
