- Chapter 2 - She's in Heat
“No suppressant, no meds to dull the heat. The only solution Xue Cheng could think of was cold water.”
But luck wasn’t on her side.
She blinked—once, twice, even a few more times—yet the scene in front of her stayed the same. That pitiful, terrified mute beauty was still curled up in the corner, looking at her like a wounded animal.
After twenty years of living a pretty normal life, the most important decision Xue Cheng had made up till now was picking a college major. But in this bizarre new world, she was about to make her second: to survive, she had to seriously get on the heroine’s good side.
Since she’d ended up in this story, there was no use struggling against it. For now, she couldn’t return to the real world—so she might as well do everything she could to stay alive here.
She tried to recall the plot. Because the cannon-fodder scumbag alpha she had transmigrated into shared her name, she’d only skimmed through the early chapters of the novel. It was all non-consensual stuff at first—scenes she didn’t particularly enjoy, especially when the villain had her exact name. It was just too much.
Still, she remembered enough to know this was a critical point in the story.
Until now, the heroine had always refused to let the original Xue Cheng mark her. But today—today was when the original scumbag drugged her, shackled her in chains, beat her up, and was supposed to forcefully mark the mute beauty.
Judging by the heroine’s current state, it looked like she’d been drugged and shackled… but the marking hadn’t happened yet.
Whew. That was close.
Xue Cheng exhaled with relief. At least it wasn’t too late. Things hadn’t gone completely off the rails.
There’s still a chance to fix this.
She glanced at the curled-up girl in the corner—so small, so fragile—and tried to give herself a mental pep talk. She hasn’t turned into a blackened revenge machine yet. If I just show her a little love and kindness now, maybe she won’t end up chopping me into tiny pieces and feeding me to the dogs later.
So eager to win the heroine’s favor, she didn’t even notice something was wrong with her own condition. She took a few steps forward… and immediately stopped, afraid that getting too close might scare the girl even more.
After a moment’s hesitation, Xue Cheng forced a big, friendly smile, doing her best to appear harmless.
“Uh… um, Liu Wuyuan? Are you okay?”
The second the words left her mouth, she wanted to slap herself. What kind of dumb question was that? Anyone could see the poor girl was not okay, and here she was asking such a stupid thing.
Liu Wuyuan looked up at her briefly, then quickly turned her head away. She nodded—then shook her head.
Xue Cheng couldn’t make sense of the reaction. Probably a confused mix of “I’m fine” and “I’m not fine, but I’m scared you’ll hurt me more if I say otherwise.”
There she was, huddled in the corner, unable to speak, clearly suffering—just pitiful beyond belief.
Xue Cheng felt a surge of guilt. Even though she wasn’t the one who had actually hurt Liu Wuyuan, just inhabiting this body made her want to curse herself out loud: What a piece of trash.
For a moment, she had no idea what to say. She’d never dealt with anything this complicated before. She crouched down, trying to lower herself to eye level, hoping not to come off as condescending.
After a long pause, she let out a sigh.
“I… I don’t really know how to explain it, but I must’ve been possessed or something. What I did to you was wrong—completely wrong. Let me take you to get those injuries treated, okay?”
As she moved closer, she caught a whiff of that sweet, cotton-candy-and-milk scent again. This time, she recognized it more clearly: it smelled exactly like the little milk buns she used to love as a kid.
That faint, creamy sweetness—it wasn’t overwhelming, just… delicious.
In her eyes, the battered little mute beauty looked even more tempting now. Her mark teeth itched, heat spread through her body, and Xue Cheng’s expression faltered as she realized—something was very, very wrong.
She instinctively backed up.
But she forgot she was crouching.
Losing her balance, she fell back hard on her butt, looking more than a little ridiculous.
Liu Wuyuan didn’t react to her apology at all. No one could go from sadistic abuser to repentant sweetheart in the blink of an eye—not in real life. She figured Xue Cheng was just putting on an act, probably planning some new way to torment her.
Xue Cheng clutched the back of her neck, feeling the heat rising there. She could barely keep her pheromones under control. If she stayed here any longer, something bad was going to happen.
Biting her lip, she forced out the words: “Do you know where the suppressant is? I think… I think I’m going into heat.”
Liu Wuyuan: “……”
She blinked. What kind of nonsense was that? What’s a suppressant?
Whatever. Just shake your head. That was always safer.
Xue Cheng watched her shake her head and realized—right. This world didn’t have suppressants.
Her eyes darted around until they landed on the nape of Liu Wuyuan’s neck, where a slightly peeling, flesh-toned patch was stuck over her gland.
She pointed at it. “That patch on your neck—do you know where I can find more? I’m seriously about to lose control here.”
But Liu Wuyuan and the original owner barely even shared a bed. How would she know where anything was stored? Their so-called “marriage” was just for show. Alphas and Omegas didn’t even use the same kind of gland patches.
Her suspicions deepened. Xue Cheng was clearly faking it—pretending she was about to go into heat so she’d have an excuse to pounce and force a bond.
But what could she do? Omegas were physically weaker than Alphas to begin with. Add in the drugs, the shackles, and the pain—she didn’t even have the strength to stand, let alone fight off a frenzied Alpha.
Liu Wuyuan’s heart sank. She knew there was no escaping this time. Her eyes dimmed as she stared blankly at the floor, completely tuning Xue Cheng out.
Xue Cheng was practically panicking. The mute beauty didn’t even flinch. If she stayed here any longer, she was definitely going to lose control. She’d never gone through something like this before, but she could already feel her instincts going haywire.
There’s no way I can stay in this room a second longer!
“I—I’m going! I can’t be in here!”
She blurted it out, scrambled to her feet, and rushed to the door like her life depended on it.
No suppressant, no meds. The only thing she could think of was cold water.
Outside, Xue Cheng realized the place was tiny. Just a little courtyard. On the left was a room stacked with firewood—probably the kitchen. She looked around quickly and spotted a well in the middle of the yard.
Without a second thought, she ran to it, hauled up a bucket, and dumped it straight over her head.
The icy splash made her shiver violently, but at least it brought her back to her senses.
Leaning over the well, gasping for breath, Xue Cheng thought hard. This isn’t normal. If she were really in heat, there’s no way one bucket of cold water would snap her out of it.
Then it hit her.
It wasn’t her going into heat.
It was Liu Wuyuan.
The Omega’s pheromones had saturated the air, and being exposed to them must’ve triggered her own reaction.
Wait—if she’s in heat, and I just left her in there alone…
Xue Cheng hesitated at the door, torn between checking on her and staying away. What if she went back in and really lost control this time?
Inside the room, things had taken a sharp turn for the worse.
The original scumbag had drugged Liu Wuyuan, and the calming patch on her neck wasn’t strong enough to suppress the full-blown heat that hit like a storm.
Curled up in the corner, trembling and flushed, the mute beauty panted weakly. The heat was too much—it burned through her body like fire, and now and then, soft, painful whimpers slipped from her throat.
Originally, Liu Wuyuan had managed to cling to a bit of rational thought—but it didn’t last long.
The burning desire raging through her body soon became too much to bear. Earlier, when Xue Cheng had gotten close, she’d left behind a faint trace of her lime-scented pheromones in the room.
Now, that refreshing scent lingered in the air, tugging at Liu Wuyuan’s foggy mind, coaxing her to chase after its source.
Outside, Xue Cheng was still inspecting the tiny courtyard. To the left, the kitchen—no way there would be any suppressant or medicine in there. Her eyes moved to the right, where she spotted a small room. She stood and headed toward it.
It was much smaller than the one she’d woken up in but neat and clean. Xue Cheng vaguely remembered from the novel that the original Xue Cheng had once picked up an unconscious Liu Wuyuan from the roadside and brought her home.
They didn’t share a room. This small annex must’ve been where Liu Wuyuan stayed.
The original owner didn’t have much money. Her parents had died early, leaving her only this small courtyard. She got by mostly on help from relatives and spent her days drinking and gambling.
The courtyard looked decent from the outside, but the inside of the house was another story—crude and bare. Hardly any furniture aside from a bed, a cabinet, a small square table, and two wooden stools.
Xue Cheng figured anything remotely valuable had already been pawned away to feed the original’s gambling habit. She wasn’t thrilled about rummaging through someone else’s things without permission, but under the circumstances, she didn’t have the luxury of being polite.
She started with the wardrobe—nothing. No medicine, no patches.
Then she moved to the bed and felt around.
Under the pillow, her fingers touched something cold and metallic—a pair of scissors.
Xue Cheng pulled them out and stared, speechless. Thank God the original didn’t completely lose her mind and try to come in here and do anything worse. Otherwise, she might’ve ended up getting stabbed to death by these scissors.
She kept searching and soon found a small wooden box tucked inside the bedding.
Inside were a few pieces of broken silver and two stringed coins—probably Liu Wuyuan’s emergency savings. Xue Cheng didn’t touch the money. She carefully picked out one of the flesh-toned gland patches and lifted the lid on a tiny porcelain jar.
She brought it to her nose and took a cautious sniff.
Her background in pharmacology wasn’t completely useless—even if this world was different, she could still recognize the familiar scent of certain medicinal herbs. It smelled like something that might help suppress heat.
“Well, desperate times call for desperate measures.”
It was the best she could do. She packed up the patch and ointment, turned back, and hurried to the room she’d come from.
As soon as she pushed open the door, a wave of sweet, milky fragrance rushed at her.
Her heart skipped a beat.
The mute beauty, who had been curled in the corner just a while ago, was now on the bed. She was hugging the blanket, burying her face in it, and breathing in deeply.
Probably because it still held traces of Xue Cheng’s scent.
Xue Cheng quickly pulled her collar over her nose and mouth to avoid inhaling too much of the Omega’s pheromones, then rushed over and wrapped her arms around Liu Wuyuan.
“Liu Wuyuan—hey, Liu Wuyuan, wake up! Look at this! Can you use this?”
The girl in her arms had flushed cheeks tinted a delicate shade of pink, and her eyes shimmered with a hazy fog. Through the blur, she looked at Xue Cheng in confusion, dazed and helpless.
Xue Cheng held the little jar up close to her face. The closer she got, the stronger the Omega’s pheromones hit her. She could feel herself slipping again—her breathing sped up, and her voice became more urgent, maybe even a bit harsh.
“Look! Can this help suppress your heat?”
Perhaps startled by her tone, Liu Wuyuan seemed to snap out of it a little. Her wide eyes flicked to the jar in Xue Cheng’s hand. She blinked and then finally—finally—nodded.
