- Chapter 3 - A Rare Guest
“She rarely stepped outside without heading to the Lotus Pavilion, so seeing her at a humble food stall was quite the surprise to many.”
Liu Wuyuan only regained her clarity for a fleeting moment before the waves of heat swallowed her mind again. Suddenly, she nuzzled her flushed face against the crook of Xue Cheng’s neck, her burning skin making Xue Cheng instinctively recoil.
Seeing her pull away, Liu Wuyuan let out a low, aggrieved whimper and tried to cling to her again, almost pleading.
Xue Cheng was flustered and struggled to hold her back. The thick, honey-sweet scent of milk in Liu Wuyuan’s pheromones was making her entire body heat up and weaken. If this went on much longer, she wasn’t sure how much longer she could hang on.
Cursing herself, she popped open the porcelain jar and whispered an apology, “Sorry about this…” before gently peeling back the slightly curled gland patch.
Underneath was a delicate, swollen scent gland, flushed pink and tender.
The Omega’s heat had caused the gland to leak, releasing an even richer and sweeter milky fragrance. Even with her mouth and nose covered, Xue Cheng couldn’t block it out. It hit her brain like a direct electric jolt.
A sheltered little Alpha like her had never been through anything remotely like this. Not only was it her first time seeing an Omega’s scent gland, but in the world she came from, people managed their pheromones exceptionally well.
There were suppression sprays, blockers, scent-dampening patches, and nearly every indoor space was equipped with 24/7 air filtration to neutralize pheromones instantly. Even during heats or ruts, pheromone exposure was carefully contained and rarely caused this kind of chaos.
Now, with one hand trying to restrain the clingy little mute beauty who kept burrowing into her aarms andthe other scooping out the medicinal ointment, Xue Cheng was struggling to apply it to the gland on the back of Liu Wuyuan’s neck.
But Liu Wuyuan was completely irrational at this point. She didn’t cooperate—if anything, she made things worse. She wrapped her arms around Xue Cheng’s neck and buried herself against her shoulder; her nose was twitching as she sniffed toward the back of Xue Cheng’s neck, where a faint trail of lime lingered.
Even though Xue Cheng had rinsed off in cold water earlier, her Alpha scent hadn’t been completely washed away, and to an Omega deep in heat, even the faintest trace of an Alpha’s pheromones was maddeningly tempting.
“C-come on, don’t… don’t do this…”
In their tangled struggle, Liu Wuyuan’s nose brushed against Xue Cheng’s scent gland.
Xue Cheng jolted violently. A tingling, electric sensation spread through her entire body from that single point of contact.
And just like that, the internal war began.
In her mind, a devilish little Xue Cheng stomped her foot and yelled, “Mark her! She’s practically throwing herself at you—what kind of Alpha are you if you don’t?”
Then an angelic little Xue Cheng appeared, shaking her head solemnly. “No. She’s only acting like this because of her heat. She’s not in control. If you mark her now, you’re no better than a monster.”
It was hell.
Xue Cheng was on the verge of biting through her lip, trying to restrain herself, trying to resist the primal urge while wrangling a disobedient, seductive little Omega who clearly had no idea what she was doing.
With no other choice, she wrapped Liu Wuyuan in a firm hug, holding her still. Letting the girl nestle into her shoulder, she took a deep breath and consciously released a small amount of her lime-scented pheromones to soothe the distressed Omega.
It worked.
Liu Wuyuan finally calmed down a bit. Relieved, Xue Cheng let out a shaky breath and quickly swept aside her long hair, applying the ointment to the exposed gland.
But just as the cooling salve touched her skin, pain shot through Xue Cheng’s neck.
The mute beauty had bitten down—right on her gland.
Unlike Omegas, Alpha glands weren’t meant to be marked. The bite sent pain ricocheting through her body. Xue Cheng couldn’t stay upright, and she collapsed onto the floor. Her vision went black for a moment.
And all thoughts of applying medicine flew out the window.
Liu Wuyuan didn’t seem to care that Xue Cheng was curled beneath her in pain. She hovered over her, mouth still locked around that gland, licking and sucking greedily.
The limey freshness that filled her mouth only made her crave more.
Fortunately, Omegas didn’t have the instinct to mark others. She didn’t actually bite hard enough to break skin or leave a mark. Instead, she just pinned the swollen gland between her tongue and the roof of her mouth, coaxing out more of that sweet citrus scent.
She licked. And licked again.
Until the once-plump gland finally gave out—flattened and spent, releasing no more pheromones. Satisfied at last, the little mute beauty smacked her lips, nudged her nose against Xue Cheng’s neck, and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
Xue Cheng lay limp on the floor, utterly drained. For a long time, she just stared at the ceiling, feeling as though her soul had left her body.
After several deep breaths, she managed to sit up, scolding herself for being so useless. She was an Alpha, for crying out loud—how could she be the one taken advantage of?
But there was no use crying over spilled milk.
Thanks to her Alpha physiology, she recovered quickly. She couldn’t just let both of them sleep on the cold, hard floor all night.
And besides, she needed to earn points with the mute beauty, who, let’s not forget, might turn into a blackened villain who’d chop her up and feed her to the dogs one day.
She carefully lifted Liu Wuyuan and carried her back to bed. Then she started searching for the key to the shackles on the girl’s ankles.
The problem was, she wasn’t the original Xue Cheng. She had no idea where that heartless woman might’ve hidden the damn thing.
She dug through the bedside cabinet, rummaging for ages but found nothing. Just as she was about to get off the bed and search elsewhere, the sleeping Liu Wuyuan wrapped her arms tightly around her again.
The mute beauty couldn’t speak, but she gave a soft, unhappy whimper—clearly unwilling to let her go.
Xue Cheng’s cheeks flushed red, like an overripe apple. She looked down at the girl clinging to her even in sleep and muttered, exasperated, “What kind of Omega are you… You’ve done all that to me and—ugh—I’ve never even held an Omega’s hand before…”
She was on the verge of crying from the injustice.
She was the one who got taken advantage of, and now she had to deal with the aftermath—while still shouldering the blame for the original Xue Cheng’s cruelty. Not to mention, she was still at risk of getting chopped up and dog-fed if she wasn’t careful.
Xue Cheng couldn’t help but sigh. What kind of messed-up karma is this?
First, she chose that cursed major and became a miserable, overworked medical research drone. Then she got thrown into a novel as a cannon-fodder scumbag Alpha everyone hated.
At this point, it was like she’d pissed off Heaven itself.
The key was nowhere to be found, and the clingy little Omega wouldn’t let go.
So Xue Cheng gave up. She yanked the blanket over them both and flopped back down beside her.
Screw it. Let’s sleep.
If the sky falls, I’ll deal with it after I’m well rested.
Omega heat cycles usually lasted several days.
In the middle of the night, Xue Cheng felt something heavy pressing down on her chest—so much so that she could barely breathe.
When she opened her eyes, the mute beauty who had been sleeping obediently off to the side was now sprawled across her, face nestled in the crook of her neck, rubbing and nuzzling.
She whimpered softly, pitiful and needy.
Still half-asleep, Xue Cheng groggily asked, “Liu Wuyuan…? Are you awake?”
The girl tensed, just slightly.
Then, after a beat, she let out another soft, muffled whimper.
Xue Cheng, acting purely on instinct now, released a bit of her pheromones. The little Omega finally quieted down—like a starving fox who’d just found its favorite scent. She snuggled closer to Xue Cheng’s gland, sniffing away with contented sighs.
Luckily, the girl wasn’t completely out of control this time—she didn’t start nipping at her neck again, or else Xu Cheng would’ve been drained of all energy.
Xu Cheng figured the little mute still had a bit of reason left, so she tried to talk to her calmly.
“I’ll let you smell my scent,” she said in a coaxing tone, “but you have to promise not to bite me again…”
Liu Wuyuan’s body tensed at that. She didn’t respond, but at least she didn’t move again. She just lay quietly on top of Xu Cheng, sniffing contentedly. When the faint lime scent began to fade, she let out two soft, displeased whines.
Xu Cheng felt like some emotionless Alpha-scent dispenser. Every time she heard those little “whimpers,” it was like someone flipped a switch—she obediently released more scent.
And so the exhausting cycle continued through the entire morning: falling asleep from fatigue, only to be woken again by the clingy Liu Wuyuan; releasing some scent, passing out again; waking up and doing it all over. On and on it went until daylight poured through the windows.
The constant release of her scent paired with barely getting any rest had drained Xu Cheng completely. Meanwhile, Liu Wuyuan had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep—sated, it seemed, by the hours of inhaling Alpha pheromones.
She lay curled beside Xu Cheng, one hand tightly gripping her sleeve, as if terrified Xu Cheng might vanish.
Xu Cheng felt like she’d run a marathon—exhausted and starving. Clearly, Liu Wuyuan wasn’t going to do anything for now, so Xu Cheng had to drag herself up.
Her clothes were damp with sweat and the heat of the day before, now stuck uncomfortably to her skin. She was half-surprised she hadn’t caught a fever.
She tried to ease her sleeve from Liu Wuyuan’s grip, but the girl held tight even in sleep. In the end, Xu Cheng simply shrugged off the entire outer robe to free herself.
She finally managed to get out of bed, rummaged in the wardrobe for a clean outfit, and clumsily got herself dressed. Then she fetched a bucket of water from the well to wash her face and rinse her mouth.
Her stomach growled loud enough to echo.
With barely a few coins left in her pouch, she decided to head to the market and get something simple to eat.
Besides, there was still an Omega—no, in this era, they called them Kunze—in heat lying inside her house. As an Alpha, she was referred to as a Qianyuan, their pheromones were called xinxiang, and their scent glands were xinxian. The act of marking was known as forming a bond—or jieqi.
Xu Cheng muttered all this under her breath, committing it to memory to avoid slipping up later. The last thing she needed was to raise suspicion. Who knew—maybe being “different” in this world meant being accused of witchcraft and burned alive.
Yesterday had been too chaotic. She hadn’t had time to sort out any of this.
Before leaving, she made sure the door was firmly locked. There was a Kunze (Omega) in heat inside, after all. She couldn’t risk anyone sneaking in and… well, causing a disaster.
Xu Cheng didn’t dare go too far. Luckily, not far from the courtyard, she spotted a street vendor selling buns and noodles.
She hurried over. The vendor, who seemed to know the original Xu Cheng, looked a little surprised but still greeted her.
“Qianyuan Xu (Alpha Xu)? You’re not going to the Lotus Pavilion today?”
The original Xu Cheng, despite being broke and relying on relatives for handouts, had always lived extravagantly. She rarely ate anything from street vendors. Most days, she either waited for Liu Wuyuan to cook at home or splurged at the fancy Lotus Pavilion when she had a few extra coins.
Seeing her buying breakfast from a humble food stall instead of heading to the brothel? No wonder people were staring.
