- Chapter 16 - The Convenience Store Opens
Boom!
Boom!
The celebratory Smoke Flowers echoed almost all night, terrifying the surviving residents and keeping them awake.
As more and more zombies swarmed toward the building, the danger doubled.
But for He Ning, this wasn’t a problem. The gathering of zombies actually saved her the trouble of hunting them down individually.
Because the summons had a cooldown, He Ning barely depleted her mental power.
Triumphant Summons cast over a hundred times. You have learned the new skill Fireball.
Â
Fireball: Consumes 30 mental power. Unleashes a small fireball forward, dealing area-of-effect damage.
There it was!
The Mage’s classic Fireball spell.
Though the mental power cost had increased, its area-of-effect damage greatly improved her monster-farming speed, making it a worthwhile trade.
“Ah~ I’m so tired. System, deploy the Blessed Shrine outside the window. It won’t collect toxic dew now, right?”
Safety confirmed. Blessed Shrine deployed.
Â
Consecrated Water will refresh in your System Space daily at 7:00 AM.
How convenient!
He Ning stretched lazily, ready to lie down for a while.
While Meditation could restore her mental fatigue, she still needed to take care of her physical exhaustion.
Knock~ Knock~ Knock~!
“Who is it? Delivering packages this early? Why didn’t they leave it at the station?!”
Rubbing her sleepy eyes, He Ning slipped on her nightgown and headed to the door.
But something felt off.
“Fatty, it’s the third day of the Apocalypse. What package could be arriving? Still half-asleep!”
Peeking through the observation window, she saw it was the same zombies from yesterday, still banging on the door.
They hadn’t gone to any other houses, probably drawn by the scent she’d left outside yesterday.
Scent fetish—how perverted!
Whatever. I’ll use them to stretch my muscles later.
After finishing her bento, He Ning went to greet Bai Lu.
“Good morning, Xiao Lu~”
In the dimly lit room, Bai Lu stood with her head bowed, her chest rising and falling steadily. A flicker of light sparked in her eyes when she saw He Ning.
“Mmm… Good morning, Master…”
Her delicate voice was barely audible, like the buzz of a mosquito, tinged with an unspoken shame.
“Hungry? Here, have a tuantuan~”
He Ning set her down, letting her eat on her own for the first time.
“Master, won’t you feed Xiao Lu?” Her voice was timid, with a hint of hurt. Was she afraid he’d grown tired of her and would bury her somewhere?
“Oh, you’re being affectionate now? How adorable! I have some things to take care of today and might be back late. Be a good girl and wait for me.”
He Ning leaned in close, gently nipping her soft earlobe. “Tonight, we’ll have some real fun~”
“Here’s a bento and some rice balls. Eat when you’re hungry. And as a reward, a bottle of Happy Water.”
After checking that there were plenty of bottled water left, He Ning scooped the cat litter and turned to leave.
In the empty room, Bai Lu silently shed tears.
How long has it been since I could finally eat normally?!
Host, the Mall has refreshed with new items. Aren’t you going to do your shopping today? There are discounts!
“No, I’ll wait until I’ve finished my errands. Then I’ll buy something to de-stress.”
He Ning retrieved her invisibility cloak.
She was certain it only worked on sentient beings, not zombies.
But at least it would prevent survivors from discovering her true form.
“Arcane Leap!”
Whoosh!
She materialized in the adjacent room.
The doorway was blocked, so she couldn’t risk peeking through.
“Aww… aww…”
Moments later, several zombies caught her scent and shambled toward her.
The entrance hall was narrow, forcing three zombies to crowd together. She had already braced herself for combat.
“You’re practically begging for an AoE attack! Perish, heretics! Fireball!”
Whoosh!
A meter-wide ball of fire erupted from her palm.
The three zombies were instantly incinerated into ash, and her mental power surged slightly.
This is supposed to be a small fireball?
It nearly burned my hair off!
The simpler the skill, the more reliable it tends to be.
This will be my temporary camp. I’ll set up a convenience store here later.
After locking the door, she tossed several zombies out the window.
Surely no one will complain about high-altitude littering now?
Thump!
The corpses plummeted one after another, and she felt her mental power suddenly increase slightly.
Talk about unlucky zombies.
A quick search revealed only two bottles of sweet wine for women and a bag of peanuts for snacks in the refrigerator. Nothing else edible.
Typical urban white-collar worker.
But the wardrobe held a treasure trove: a large box of overnight sanitary pads—practically hard currency for women—over a dozen unopened boxes of silk stockings, and two brand-new sets of lingerie. Too large for herself, but perfect for Bai Lu.
Though the shoe cabinet was beautiful, it was filled with impractical high heels.
After discarding the useless items, He Ning began exploring the entire floor.
Excuse me for intruding, she murmured inwardly as she entered apartment 1001.
This belonged to a middle-aged couple, so there should be plenty of food.
She immediately headed for the kitchen. Sure enough, she found a fifty-kilogram bag each of rice and wheat flour.
Selling each bag for ten thousand yuan wouldn’t be unreasonable, right?
Thinking this, she was nearly overwhelmed by the stench and almost collided with an oncoming zombie.
Holy sh1t!
Instinctively, she used Arcane Leap to create distance, then dispatched the zombie with a Magic Orb.
Still too green, she thought, almost got myself killed.
The door was tightly shut—they must have been hiding inside, yet they still managed to ambush her!
A faint stench lingered in the bedroom, suggesting another threat might be present.
She crept closer, magic poised in her hand, only to discover a couple lying on the bed.
They were dressed in formal attire. A knife was plunged into the woman’s chest, while the man’s throat and wrists had been slashed—a dignified exit, it seemed.
In this apocalypse, it was as good an ending as any.
A note lay on the bedside table:Â Son, your mother couldn’t bear it any longer and took her own life. I won’t wait for you either. I’m going ahead. Ha ha.
There was no time for pity. The room also contained two tins of compressed biscuits and a case of mineral water.
After thoroughly checking every corner, she resumed scavenging for supplies.
The refrigerator held two tomatoes, three apples, a tub of oatmeal, and a box of enoki mushrooms.
The freezer was packed with frozen meat—nearly 50 pounds in total—a single, substantial haul.
These fresh and frozen goods had to be sold immediately. The city had ground to a halt, and the remaining power could fail at any moment.
After some effort, she dragged all the supplies back to her apartment next door.
The subsequent search proved less fruitful. Though she encountered no zombies, this area was populated mainly by young professionals and white-collar workers, leaving almost no decent food.
In the end, she found only 20 packs of instant noodles, 5 bags of potato chips, and 18 bottles of mineral water.
As for other survivors, she made no attempt to find them.
Not actively harming others was her greatest act of kindness.
“Awooo, awooo…”
Several zombies clawed their way up from the ground floor. If this was supposed to be “aggro-pulling,” the efficiency was abysmal.
He Ning drew her pistol—her first time using a real firearm.
She chambered a round, disengaged the safety, aligned the sights…
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Her finger tightened on the trigger, firing several shots in quick succession.
So that’s what an automatic pistol means!
The recoil wasn’t strong, but her hand still felt numb. And only one bullet hole marred the wall—the zombies remained unscathed.
The trajectory is off to the left!
Damn it! Even I can’t use my own gun properly!
She refused to admit her lack of marksmanship. With the zombies moving so slowly and so many targets available, she’d get the hang of it eventually.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
After more than a dozen shots, the three zombies finally collapsed.
The neighbors stirred at the sound of gunfire, but no one dared to open their doors.
He Ning started her descent from the 15th floor, exploring each level. Lacking proficiency with firearms, she only managed to eliminate over thirty zombies after exhausting all her ammunition.
She couldn’t help but shake her head. I still need more practice.
By the time she reached the ground floor, relying on her skills and pistol to finish off stragglers, she had killed over two hundred zombies in total.
The main entrance had been secured, temporarily making Unit 3 safe.
Though the resources were scattered, the haul was substantial:
546 packs of instant noodles 1,776 loaves of bread 20 cases of bottled water 177 bottles of beer 43 packs of tea leaves 31 cartons and 56 packs of cigarettes 430 bags of various snacks 15 bags of rice 7 bags of wheat flour 14 barrels of cooking oil 120 pounds of frozen meat 54 apples * Various vegetables that hadn’t yet spoiled
These supplies could easily fetch over a million yuan.
Apartment 1002 was now overflowing with cardboard boxes. By the time He Ning finished organizing the supplies, it was past 5 PM, and she was too exhausted to move.
Yet, forcing herself through the fatigue, she wrote out a sign: “Little Deer Convenience Store.”
Then, she posted a message in the Homeowners’ Group:
“The convenience store is now open!”
