Chapter 10: Do You Know Who I Love Most?
Ming Chunshan instinctively tried to block her, but a figure had already darted past Ming Chunshan and stood directly in front of Xia Pingwu.
Xia Pingwu naturally put down her cutlery and stood up to look at her. The person was smiling broadly back at her, though her eyes were twitching, seemingly trying to hint at something.
Ruan Zhujun definitely wanted to hint at something to Xia Pingwu.
She had been calling Xia Pingwu since early morning, desperate to find out what had happened, but Xia Pingwu wouldn’t answer. So, she simply decided to come over in person.
To be honest, she expected the house to be empty when she arrived, but she was startled when she opened the door and saw Xia Pingwu’s shoes neatly placed at the entrance.
Anxious, and missing the abnormal expression on Xia Pingwu’s face, Ruan Zhujun immediately grabbed Xia Pingwu’s hand: “Pingwu, what on earth happened to you? Why won’t you answer my calls?”
Ming Chunshan hadn’t anticipated Ruan Zhujun showing up so quickly. After making sure to keep Ruan Zhujun’s subordinates outside the door, she rushed to pull Ruan Zhujun’s hand away:
“Alright, let go. Don’t scare Elder Sister.”
“How could I scare Pingwu? If anyone scared her, it was you! Otherwise, how could Pingwu suddenly in the middle of the night…”
Ruan Zhujun’s sentence was abruptly cut off by Ming Chunshan behind her:
“Ruan Zhujun!”
Ruan Zhujun’s unfinished words stopped instantly.
There was too much malice in Ming Chunshan’s voice, as if one more word would make her tear her apart right there.
She remembered the long gun slammed towards Mao Xiqing’s head, so she shut her mouth and turned to look at Ming Chunshan.
Equally stunned was Xia Pingwu.
Although she didn’t recognize the person gripping her wrist, she recognized this Ming Chunshan even less.
A pair of eyes, brows lowered, full of ruthless intensity, simmering with rage.
Ming Chunshan steadied her breathing, pulling Ruan Zhujun back a bit, trying her best to make her words sound gentle:
“Pingwu… doesn’t remember.
“Her memory has reverted to ten years ago, the day she entered the academy as a new student. Back then, you weren’t officially roommates yet.”
Ruan Zhujun.
Roommate.
Xia Pingwu recalled. She looked at Ruan Zhujun, her tone testing:
“Are you… Ruan Zhujun?
“I remember your train to school was delayed, so we didn’t meet at the start of the semester.”
These simple two sentences made everything clear.
Ruan Zhujun stared blankly at Xia Pingwu, then flung her arm out, aiming a strike directly at Ming Chunshan’s face:
“Ming Chunshan! What in God’s name did you do to my Pingwu?!”
Ming Chunshan was only focused on pulling Ruan Zhujun away and hadn’t expected Ruan Zhujun to strike her. She was hit hard on the bridge of her nose by the force Ruan Zhujun used, the pain almost making her instinctively retaliate with a slap.
But with Xia Pingwu present, she could only use one hand to press her nose while the other tried to restrain Ruan Zhujun’s actions. She didn’t forget to explain:
“Ruan Zhujun, what are you doing! Elder Sister had already lost her memory when I got home yesterday!”
Ruan Zhujun certainly didn’t believe in amnesia out of thin air. Her condition was good enough to get out of bed and save people in the dungeon just moments ago.
It must be because Ming Chunshan came back covered in messy Anomaly power residue and affected Pingwu!
The more she thought about it, the more reasonable the idea seemed. Ruan Zhujun raised her fist, ready to punch Ming Chunshan right in the eye:
“How dare you lie to me! Don’t think Pingwu is unprotected now and that you can manipulate her alone!”
The sudden turn of events was too fast. By the time Xia Pingwu reacted, her body had subconsciously rushed forward.
She immediately reached out to separate the two, but perhaps because both were exerting great force, her pull not only failed to separate them but almost made Xia Pingwu lose her balance.
Xia Pingwu staggered backward a few steps, finally steadying herself by leaning on a chair. The two people in front of her instantly stopped their attacks, calling out to her one after another:
“Elder Sister, are you okay?”
“Pingwu, are you feeling unwell anywhere?”
“I’m not uncomfortable anywhere. I’m fine.”
Xia Pingwu clutched the chair behind her with one hand and casually brushed her hair with the other, concealing her pale face. She tried to make her voice sound steady and convincing:
“I was like this the moment I woke up. I only saw Chunshan when she arrived home later. She’s not lying.”
Ruan Zhujun sighed in relief. She gave the Ming Chunshan beside her an unwilling look and distanced herself: “Even if it’s not directly related to you, it’s indirectly related.”
Ming Chunshan’s face darkened: “If you hadn’t come here today, it wouldn’t be related to you at all.”
Ruan Zhujun raised her voice, pulling something from her pocket:
“I’m here for official business today! See this? A traffic violation ticket!
“As the Team Leader of the Bureau of Anomalies Combat Squad, you’re in a high-ranking position, yet you led by example and violated traffic rules by speeding. I was sent here to handle your violation!”
At this, Ming Chunshan was completely speechless.
She grabbed her phone from the shelf and prepared to pay the fine.
Xia Pingwu on the other side remained silent, quietly watching the two’s antics, only sighing internally:
The ten-years-later version of herself is truly weak.
If the inability to pull them apart just now was because both were exerting force, but the mere action made her so exhausted, it could only mean…
She had regressed too much.
Could she really go back to work at the Bureau of Anomalies in this state?
Ming Chunshan was processing the violation. Ruan Zhujun, with nothing to do, was about to talk to Xia Pingwu, but her gaze involuntarily passed over her and landed on Xia Pingwu’s phone placed on the wall shelf.
This was a perfect opportunity to get leverage on Ming Chunshan. Ruan Zhujun clicked her tongue, looking at Ming Chunshan menacingly:
“No wonder Pingwu didn’t answer my call. Were you afraid I’d secretly say bad things about you, so you intentionally hid her phone?”
Ming Chunshan couldn’t be bothered with her. She pressed the last button, and a crisp voice announced, “The penalty has been processed. Drivers, please strictly adhere to traffic regulations and strive to be law-abiding drivers.” Simultaneously, Ruan Zhujun’s processor displayed the [Task Complete] icon.
So, Ming Chunshan lifted her chin, smiling politely:
“Thank you, Team Leader Ruan, for coming all this way. You may leave.”
Unfortunately, the politeness was not appreciated. Ruan Zhujun shook her processor, drawing out her tone:
“Too bad my task is complete, but Team Leader Ming’s is not.
“Team Leader Ming hasn’t written her report, and she took her combat suit out without authorization. The person who comes to process the punishment might not be as easy to talk to as I am.”
At this, even the polite smile disappeared.
Ming Chunshan shot her a glance and walked back: “Take it with you. I’ll transmit the report after I finish eating.”
Ruan Zhujun called after her: “What about the reason?”
The reply was a light, airy phrase: “My partner is sick. I need to take care of her.”
Partner.
Oh right, Pingwu is still here.
She and Ming Chunshan had been bickering for so long, and Pingwu hadn’t said a word.
Ruan Zhujun was belatedly a little confused, but she was too unfamiliar with the Xia Pingwu of ten years ago. She didn’t know how to start a conversation, so she turned her gaze back to Xia Pingwu, who was still leaning against the table and chair, trying to make small talk:
“Sorry for interrupting your breakfast with Ming Chunshan.”
“Ruan… Zhujun,”
Unexpectedly, Xia Pingwu looked at Ruan Zhujun with bright, sparkling eyes. She took a few steps forward and lowered her voice:
“My treatment is showing great progress. I might be able to return to the Bureau of Anomalies. If so, can I enter the Daily Training Room?”
The Daily Training Room was the exclusive training base the Bureau of Anomalies provided for every specialist in the Bureau.
It existed ten years ago, and likely hadn’t been removed now.
But Ruan Zhujun didn’t speak immediately.
Because, to be honest, Ruan Zhujun hadn’t seen this kind of expression on Pingwu’s face for a long time.
The Pingwu in her memory was always gently smiling, indifferent to everything, as if nothing could truly get into her heart.
But the Pingwu now, the mere mention of the Daily Training Room seemed to light a fire in her eyes.
Ruan Zhujun’s heart stirred, and she instinctively replied: “You’re the Deputy Team Leader of the Bureau of Anomalies now. Even if you wanted to participate in battles, you could. Going to the Training Room is absolutely fine.”
She lowered her voice, looked up, and glanced at Ming Chunshan, who was organizing her combat suit in the room, her voice dropping even lower:
“Call me if anything happens. I’m not afraid of that person.”
Xia Pingwu was about to agree, but then seemed to remember something, and grabbed Ruan Zhujun’s sleeve: “Wait a minute.”
Ruan Zhujun saw Ming Chunshan’s figure emerging, and reluctantly pulled her sleeve out.
Then, she pulled Xia Pingwu’s cotton sleeve down to cover her hand, and casually asked: “What is it?”
Xia Pingwu hesitated, a rare look of indecision on her face: “Do you know… who I love most?”
At this moment, Ming Chunshan came over with a serious face: “Team Leader Ruan, I have the items. You can leave now.”
Ruan Zhujun’s train of thought was derailed: “Why are you keeping Pingwu so isolated? Pingwu is unfamiliar with people here. Your mission is busy, but mine isn’t. How about I…”
Ming Chunshan threw the bag in her hand into Ruan Zhujun’s arms: “I’m taking a month-long leave.”
Ruan Zhujun dropped her smile, hugged the items tightly, and warned: “Taking a month-long leave? Don’t you want to investigate this matter thoroughly?”
She “humph-ed” and continued: “That thing’s Anomaly transformation speed is too fast. It’s difficult to match its appearance with the identity system, but Ning Xuan is trying to extract DNA.”
Ming Chunshan was about to speak when someone knocked on the door again.
This time, it was finally the doctor.
Qiao Guan, the Combat Squad’s therapist at the Bureau of Anomalies.
“Hello, Team Leader Ming! Hello, Team Leader Ruan!” The newcomer quickly saluted, and then finally saw Xia Pingwu through the gap between the two: “Hello, Deputy Xia!”
Xia Pingwu also got a clear look at Qiao Guan.
Qiao Guan’s chest, abdomen, and shoulder muscles were very well-developed. One look told her this was a person with a good physique who could carry injured team members and run on the battlefield.
Qiao Guan saw Xia Pingwu looking at her and immediately smiled warmly:
“Deputy Xia, don’t worry. Today, we’ll just do a simple examination and draw a tube of bl00d to take back for Ning Xuan to analyze.”
