Chapter 13: Besides You, No One Else Will Do.
Xia Pingwu landed securely and instinctively looked at Ji Jie on the side.
Ji Jie had been helped up by Mao Xiqing. She was looking down at the floor, too embarrassed to look up.
Xia Pingwu patted Ming Chunshan’s arm, signaling her to loosen her grip. She then walked a few steps closer and said warmly: “Little one, your foundation is very good. If you could focus on…”
Before she could finish, her shoulder was pulled back.
Then, a voice as cold as ice rang out:
“What good is a good foundation? Taking advantage of someone’s weakness isn’t a fair victory.”
It was Ming Chunshan, of course.
The words were so harsh that the young woman’s face immediately turned pale. Mao Xiqing immediately stepped in to apologize: “Team Leader Ming, I’m sorry. This is all my fault. Ji Jie was trying to speak up for me…”
“You’re at fault too, of course.” Ming Chunshan cut her off, her eyes cold. “If you can’t even manage an intern, what can I expect from you in the future?”
She was truly angry.
The people around silently dispersed, but no one dared to act as if nothing happened. They quietly huddled in the corners of the training room, too afraid to speak.
Ruan Zhujun tried to explain: “I was watching. The mats all around are solid, and since Pingwu was willing…”
“She was willing because she doesn’t know her physical condition. Don’t you know?” Ming Chunshan turned her head, her gaze sharp as a knife, clearly intending to spare no one.
She was scolding whoever she saw, confronting whoever she met.
The surroundings fell silent once more. This time, no one truly dared to speak.
After a moment of silence, the people looking down saw a pair of feet suddenly move, taking a few steps forward and circling to stand in front of Ming Chunshan.
Subconsciously looking up, they saw the person reach out and cup Ming Chunshan’s cheeks.
The speed was too fast, catching even Ming Chunshan off guard, making her collide with a pair of familiar eyes.
Xia Pingwu was right in front of her, gazing intently at her.
Her look was so serious that it felt as if it could see all the flaws and ugliness in one’s heart.
Ming Chunshan deflated instantly, instinctively wanting to pull back, but her cheeks were held tightly by Xia Pingwu.
Feeling uneasy, she habitually pouted, clinging to her as she called out: “Elder Sister…”
Xia Pingwu still watched her quietly. After a moment of eye contact, the former finally spoke.
She simply said:
“Chunshan, were you doing that on purpose for me?”
What was originally a willing match had its atmosphere suppressed like this. Everyone knew who it was for.
The onlookers were embarrassed, but the person being protected was even more so.
Xia Pingwu took a step back and turned to Ruan Zhujun: “Ruan Zhujun, let’s go.”
Ruan Zhujun subconsciously agreed. As Xia Pingwu pulled her wrist, she instinctively looked back at Ming Chunshan.
Although she understood Xia Pingwu’s meaning, Ming Chunshan had been publicly humiliated like this…
From her perspective, she could clearly see that the surge of emotions had been hidden behind Ming Chunshan’s tightly pursed lips almost instantly. Even the annoyance from just moments ago was firmly contained.
It wasn’t the first time she had seen such speed, but Ruan Zhujun still felt a bit impressed.
In a flash, she was pulled out by Xia Pingwu. After less than a moment of stillness behind them, Ming Chunshan’s chasing footsteps immediately sounded.
The three of them continued this chase until they reached the first-floor lobby. Seeing Xia Pingwu about to head to the parking lot, Ming Chunshan finally leaped forward and gripped Xia Pingwu’s arm.
Xia Pingwu stopped. Ruan Zhujun stopped as well. Both turned to look at Ming Chunshan.
Ming Chunshan held Xia Pingwu’s arm tightly, her voice soft: “Elder Sister, I was wrong. Let’s go home.”
Xia Pingwu nodded, seeming easy to talk to. She only pulled her arm free, crossed her arms, and stood there: “What were you wrong about?”
This showed a possibility of reconciliation.
Ming Chunshan’s eyes lit up. Ignoring Ruan Zhujun still standing nearby, she moved forward to hug Xia Pingwu.
But Xia Pingwu blocked her with a raised arm, stopping her, and repeated clearly and accurately: “What were you wrong about?”
“I shouldn’t have lost my temper in public,” Ming Chunshan admitted her fault well. “I should have made them write self-criticisms privately.”
She shifted her gaze to Ruan Zhujun, who was quietly backing away: “And you, you have to write a self-criticism too.”
“You’re the one who should write a self-criticism.” Xia Pingwu glared at Ming Chunshan, pulled the car key out of her pocket, and then walked quickly toward the exit.
Ruan Zhujun nudged Ming Chunshan, who was still standing stunned. The latter immediately scrambled after her to unlock the car.
The cars of ten years later were significantly different from those ten years ago. Xia Pingwu rested her head on the window, observing Ming Chunshan’s actions out of the corner of her eye, when she suddenly heard Ming Chunshan speak:
“Elder Sister, they are all unrelated people. Whatever they say, don’t take it to heart.”
Xia Pingwu’s gaze paused, focusing on Ming Chunshan: “What did they say?”
Ming Chunshan fell silent for a moment, then answered evasively: “…Elder Sister, I know that your lifelong dream was to become the most outstanding Anomaly specialist.
“You already achieved that. Truly, the Bureau of Anomalies will always remember your glory.”
“So… that’s how it is.”
Perhaps it was because the close-quarters combat had used up most of her strength, but as Xia Pingwu leaned against the seat back, she felt every muscle in her body aching as if it had been thoroughly pounded.
She answered very slowly, seeming to organize her words, but her tone was firm:
“But Chunshan, I’m not resigned.”
She was naturally concerned about her current physical condition, and she was even more concerned that Chunshan would neglect her work for her sake.
Whether it was about taking extended leave for her or smashing a gun against a teammate.
Ming Chunshan didn’t say anything. The car was already close to home. She suddenly hit the brakes, stopping the car by the side of the road.
At the same time, Xia Pingwu turned her head, and suddenly reached out, firmly clamping down on Ming Chunshan’s hand resting on the steering wheel:
“Even if the Great War is over, the world ten years later is still as terrible as it was ten years ago. Am I supposed to watch, unable to make any change?
“Chunshan, I’m not resigned.”
No, that’s not it.
The current world is the peace bought with your life.
But Ming Chunshan still didn’t speak. She sat in the driver’s seat, silently gripping the steering wheel.
Only Ming Chunshan’s ragged breathing remained in the entire cockpit.
A moment later, Xia Pingwu asked her: “You look very angry. Should I get out and let you cool down?”
“You stay put.” Ming Chunshan dropped these three words, then opened the door, got out, and closed the car door heavily.
The residual tremor from the car door was still echoing. Xia Pingwu looked at the key still in the ignition and even had the presence of mind to think:
Chunshan probably knew she didn’t have her driver’s license yet.
Once she secretly got it, she’d just drive her car away next time.
For now, she had to wait for Chunshan to come back and drive.
Besides…
Although what she said might have been unpleasant, she wasn’t wrong.
That was her true feeling.
Xia Pingwu rested her head on her hand, her thoughts complex.
Moreover, she felt a wave of heat rush from all her limbs straight to her head.
The sudden discomfort made her a little uneasy. Xia Pingwu turned her head to look outside.
If Chunshan hadn’t gone far, she could call her back and ask her to take her to the hospital.
Her eyes were scanning when they suddenly stopped.
Xia Pingwu didn’t see Ming Chunshan’s figure, but she saw another figure that was somewhat familiar.
The person who had been staring at her in the Bureau of Anomalies lobby earlier.
That’s strange. Is it already the end of the workday at the Bureau of Anomalies? And that person just happened to be where Chunshan parked?
Xia Pingwu took out her phone, intending to snap a picture and simultaneously call Ruan Zhujun to ask her to find a way to get her out of here. But the phone, by unfortunate coincidence, started showing the “low battery” signal, and then slowly shut down in front of her eyes.
Troubles come in threes.
Chunshan was gone, her phone was dead, and getting out of the car suddenly would be dangerous.
Xia Pingwu turned back, still wanting to see the specific features of that figure, but realized that in that moment of distraction, the figure had vanished.
A rare sense of urgency rose in her heart, but then a low tapping sound reached her ears.
It was at the driver’s side window.
Xia Pingwu turned her head and saw Ming Chunshan had already opened the car door, her voice back to normal:
“Why did you turn off your phone?”
How did Chunshan know? Was she trying to call her just now?
Xia Pingwu’s heart softened slightly. She shook her phone: “The battery died.”
Ming Chunshan nodded, then raised her hand and shook it, mimicking her motion.
In her hand was a bag.
She continued:
“I’m sorry, Elder Sister. I was too emotional today.”
She observed Xia Pingwu’s expression without betraying her thoughts, her tone as gentle as possible:
“I just went to buy you medicine. Let’s go home, okay?”
So she went to buy medicine.
She wasn’t stopping the car out of anger, nor was she carelessly abandoning her here.
Xia Pingwu was about to agree when the wave of heat rushed over her again, making her feel dizzy.
Ming Chunshan noticed something was wrong. She put the bag down and climbed into the car: “Elder Sister, are you feeling unwell somewhere?”
Xia Pingwu didn’t answer the question. She just shook her head, reaching out to grab Ming Chunshan’s arm.
Since she wasn’t necessarily angry, she had to finish what she was saying.
Ming Chunshan was gripped, and a wave of heat immediately enveloped her. She heard Xia Pingwu saying to her:
“Chunshan, let me finish.
“As long as Anomalies exist, we can’t just live in complacent comfort.
“Just like how you always want to be with me, I also hope…” to stand with you.
The rest of her voice was muffled beneath the blanket Ming Chunshan had suddenly draped over her head, indistinct and hard to hear.
Still talking about this.
She didn’t want to listen.
Ming Chunshan turned the heater up high and started the car. Her voice, mixed with the engine noise, sounded even more unclear:
“We will always be together.”
“At least at the Bureau of Anomalies, we can’t always be together.”
Xia Pingwu didn’t have the strength to lift the blanket over her head. She leaned languidly against the chair, stubbornly refuting, but her voice was clearly slurred now:
“There’s one more thing, Chunshan. I hope you can have more people you can confide in, whether they’re teammates or friends…”
Besides, if I’m not by your side in the future, what will you do alone?
Xia Pingwu couldn’t finish. She felt the car’s speed suddenly slow down.
The car seemed to have stopped at a traffic light. The blanket was lifted, and Ming Chunshan was looking at her.
Xia Pingwu looked up in response. She was unaware that her eyes were gradually misting over from the heat.
Ming Chunshan leaned in to look at her, her fingers, hardened from long training, gently tracing Xia Pingwu’s delicate jaw.
The distance between them closed suddenly, their warm breaths intertwining. Xia Pingwu tried to open her eyes wide, but still felt a bit dizzy.
She heard Ming Chunshan’s voice, hoarse, whispering to her:
“Elder Sister, you have to stay by my side.
“No one else will do.”
Xia Pingwu slowly blinked, distracted by why she felt the air around her nose was getting hotter.
Was she getting sicker?
And…
They were really too close.
It almost made her think Ming Chunshan was going to cup her chin and kiss her.
Perhaps due to her physical discomfort, Xia Pingwu felt her brain was running slow. She belatedly tried to push her away, when she noticed the color of the light ahead change in her peripheral vision.
The red light turned green.
The warm breath immediately retreated, and the car started moving smoothly again.
Hmm, it was indeed her illusion.
