Chapter 16: Elder Sister is Crying.
“Is something the matter?” Ming Chunshan asked, closing the door and examining the person.
The person wasn’t carrying medicine, just a simple electronic device.
“Team Leader Ning asked me to give this to you,” the person handed the object to Ming Chunshan. “It can temporarily shield Anomaly power interference. The battery is already installed and is enough for one mission.”
Ming Chunshan waved her hand, instinctively explaining: “Thank Ning Xuan for me, but Elder Sister won’t be participating in combat…”
“I’m just following orders.” The person tucked the item into Ming Chunshan’s palm without another word and left.
When Ming Chunshan pushed the door open, she saw Xia Pingwu quickly operating the glasses while communicating with Mao Xiqing.
She heard Xia Pingwu ask: “I know Chunshan would generally consider it this way, but what about you? What do you think?”
Mao Xiqing’s face was already flushed with embarrassment, clearly stumped by the question.
Xia Pingwu sighed, her voice softer: “It’s okay. Chunshan isn’t here. You can tell me anything.”
Ming Chunshan’s footsteps instinctively paused. Then, she saw Mao Xiqing’s face turn even redder. Finally, Mao Xiqing hardened her resolve and spoke frankly:
“…I’m probably just better suited to being an assistant.
“Team Leader Ming handles everything. I don’t need to worry at all.”
The next moment, Ming Chunshan saw Xia Pingwu’s expression darken slightly, looking very displeased.
She instinctively straightened her back and knocked on the door panel: “I’m back.”
Xia Pingwu saw her, said little, waved at Mao Xiqing, then sat down in the co-pilot’s seat, signaling Ming Chunshan to start the meeting.
This means Elder Sister is a little unhappy.
Ming Chunshan pursed her lips. The impatience on her face vanished completely. She then proactively walked to the main position and tapped the desk:
“Gather up. We’re having a quick meeting. The Detection Platform is already urging us to leave.”
Everyone quickly took their seats, skillfully putting on their glasses, and began looking at the display board following Ming Chunshan’s movements.
Mao Xiqing sat in the third seat, closer to the two of them.
Was it her imagination, or did the air pressure feel a bit low?
The mission this time was to clear several locations within the Mountain Wall where the contamination value exceeded the standard.
Although the Mountain Wall largely blocked the fog contamination, it wasn’t a hundred percent effective. Therefore, the Combat Squad regularly went to locations nearing the contamination limit, based on the Detection Platform’s alerts, to eliminate all contaminated dangerous organisms. The Logistics Team would then come to clean the site.
There was no combat involved this time, and the danger level was low. Ming Chunshan agreed to let Xia Pingwu go with her.
She instinctively wanted to show Elder Sister good will.
The car arrived smoothly at the destination. Xia Pingwu looked around, subconsciously feeling a bit familiar with the area.
She wanted to ask Ming Chunshan, but Ming Chunshan had already tapped her glasses and started reporting: “Arrived at the target location. Detection Platform, please transmit the specific coordinates.”
Logically, the Detection Platform’s scanning results should have been sent to the Combat Squad when the mission was issued, but for some reason, there was a delay today.
This time, after waiting for a moment, no data was transmitted from the Detection Platform.
Xia Pingwu glanced sideways at Ming Chunshan, just in time to see Ming Chunshan fiddling with the communication earpiece, her expression growing worse.
She called out: “Chunshan?”
Ming Chunshan’s face immediately brightened. When meeting Xia Pingwu’s eyes, a helpless smile even appeared on her lips as she mouthed to Xia Pingwu: “System failure. We have to do it manually.“
Xia Pingwu nodded subtly, her fingers also tapping her own communication earpiece.
This was also Ming Chunshan’s spare.
Chunshan had probably forgotten that the spare equipment could be online with the main equipment and share data.
So at this moment, she could hear an unfamiliar voice coming from the earpiece:
“Can’t Xia Pingwu manually detect contamination values?
“Chunshan, it’s a rare occasion for Xia Pingwu to rejoin the team. You should learn properly from your Senior Sister.”
Xia Pingwu’s eyes immediately cooled.
She reached out and tugged Ming Chunshan, proactively saying: “I’ll do it.”
The next thing Ming Chunshan saw was Xia Pingwu’s slightly faded expression:
In fact, ever since leaving the workroom, she had been guessing the reason for Elder Sister’s unhappiness.
To be honest, ever since Elder Sister put on the combat uniform, she felt she had subconsciously returned to her student days.
And now with these frequent accidents, would Elder Sister think that she had no real ability to lead the Combat Squad?
That she simply… couldn’t compare to Mother.
While Ming Chunshan was distracted, Xia Pingwu had already turned and beckoned to Mao Xiqing:
“I just received word that the Detection Platform can’t send the contamination value. Chunshan and I will perform a manual scan.
“So today, the ‘eyes’ of the squad will temporarily be handed over to you.”
The contamination value could only be detected by Anomaly power users, which meant that to detect it, Anomaly power had to be released.
However, at the same time, the five senses would be weakened, requiring someone in the squad to reduce their use of Anomaly power and rely purely on their senses to observe the surroundings.
Previously, the Detection Platform handled the scanning, and Ming Chunshan served as these “eyes,” always taking the lead in any situation.
But this time, that was clearly not possible.
Mao Xiqing hesitated: “Deputy Xia, this is my first time doing this. I think… maybe Team Leader Ming should go with me.”
She had heard of the previous Combat Squad Leader’s reputation for manual detection. Deputy Xia was her proudest student, so there shouldn’t be any problem.
And Team Leader Ming could just…
Unexpectedly, Ming Chunshan suddenly gripped Xia Pingwu’s shoulder, shaking her head at Mao Xiqing:
“No. Manual detection requires Anomaly power assistance. Elder Sister can’t use Anomaly power, so the ‘eyes’ must be you.
“As for your feeling that you can’t handle it alone…
“Everyone else needs to be in the formation for firearms and tranquilizer bows. They most likely can’t assist you.”
As Ming Chunshan’s voice trailed off, the hand resting on Xia Pingwu’s shoulder was held in return.
Xia Pingwu looked up and glanced toward the end of the line: “Ji Jie, you partner with Mao Xiqing.”
Ming Chunshan’s hand instantly tightened.
On the other side, as soon as Xia Pingwu finished speaking, a confused head suddenly popped up from the solemn line: “Me?”
Xia Pingwu nodded.
The figure in the distance immediately straightened up, then rushed to Xia Pingwu’s front like a gust of wind, stuttering a bit: “Deputy… Deputy Xia, I’m just an intern…”
Tsk, too close to Elder Sister.
Ming Chunshan lowered her gaze, while subtly reaching out and pulling Xia Pingwu closer to her, casually replying:
“Do interns get special protection in the Combat Squad? Or does the Anomaly perceive interns as the last to die?”
Ji Jie’s expression tensed. Xia Pingwu’s eyes, however, softened. She looked at Ji Jie, but her fingers slipped down Ming Chunshan’s palm, interlocking with hers in a soothing gesture:
“Ji Jie, I’ve reviewed your personnel file. You have excellent physical fitness. There’s no need for you to be a substitute in the firearms section.
“You and Mao Xiqing will be the ‘eyes.'”
As soon as Ji Jie nodded, her vision blurred as she saw Xia Pingwu being pulled by Ming Chunshan, striding quickly into the contaminated area.
Ming Chunshan’s voice was as cold as ever: “All units prepare. Enter the contaminated area immediately.”
Yet, Xia Pingwu felt that as Ming Chunshan said this, she lightly squeezed her hand.
She immediately glanced sideways: “What are you doing?”
Seeing she was discovered, Ming Chunshan instantly pressed her advantage, gripping Xia Pingwu’s hand tightly, pouting, and looking serious:
“Weren’t we going to do manual detection? I only remember we have to hold hands. What else do we have to do? Teach me.”
“Yes, we have to hold hands.”
Xia Pingwu kept a straight face:
“However, Shi-mu didn’t tell you something. Besides holding hands for manual detection, a kiss is even more effective.
“Do you want a kiss?”
Ming Chunshan’s eyes immediately lit up.
In that instant, Xia Pingwu felt that the night vision feature of the glasses was unnecessary; Ming Chunshan’s eyes alone would suffice.
She held back a smile and turned her gaze toward the distant darkness. Before she could make out anything, she heard a voice:
“Xia Pingwu.”
Xia Pingwu turned to look at Ming Chunshan, questioning her with her eyes.
Getting bold, calling her by her full name now.
With that turn, she saw Ming Chunshan was still staring at her hand. Seeing her look over, Ming Chunshan leaned in:
“Then let’s start.”
Ming Chunshan meaningfully stared at Xia Pingwu’s lips, but Xia Pingwu had no time for this. Her mind exploded with a sudden roar:
That wasn’t Ming Chunshan calling her just now.
Then who was it?
Distraught, Xia Pingwu subtly glanced behind her. The team members were still cautiously observing their surroundings, with no sign of abnormality.
If that’s the case…
She looked back at Ming Chunshan: “Okay.”
If that’s the case, then the voice came from within this dense contaminated fog.
