Chapter 17: “It Must Be Tough Watching Chunshan Work Alone, Right?”
It wasn’t that Ming Chunshan had never heard Xia Pingwu cry before.
But this was the first time it was in this setting.
She curled her fingers and lightly knocked on the door: “Elder Sister?”
The crying inside instantly stopped, and Xia Pingwu’s voice came through: “You can come in.”
Elder Sister stopped crying; she doesn’t want me to know she’s upset.
This thought immediately arose in Ming Chunshan’s mind. She lowered her gaze, pushed the door open and entered, only to see Xia Pingwu wiping her eyes, then looking up at her: “Is everything taken care of?”
Elder Sister’s eyes are so red, she really did cry.
Why?
Ming Chunshan thought, as she replied: “Yes, it’s all done. I’m here to take you home.”
Then, she very cautiously asked: “Are you feeling unwell anywhere?”
“I’m not unwell.”
Xia Pingwu lowered her voice,
“I haven’t apologized to you yet.”
Ming Chunshan immediately straightened up, embracing Xia Pingwu with one hand, her fingers briefly touching her waist:
“What is it, Elder Sister?”
Xia Pingwu lowered her eyes, her eyelashes like brushes concealing her gaze and the emotions within:
“This mission was my fault.”
She lowered her eyes, her voice even softer:
“I was too impulsive today, and I didn’t consider the team.”
“It’s okay, Elder Sister, it’s not your fault.”
Ming Chunshan half-knelt down and gently cupped Xia Pingwu’s face,
“You’re unfamiliar with everything; this is completely normal. It’s already remarkable that you were the first to find the traces.”
Xia Pingwu suddenly looked up, staring at Ming Chunshan with those eyes that still held traces of moisture, her gaze serious, “Chunshan, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Ming Chunshan was in a panic, ready to drag a doctor over, so there was no way she would refuse:
“Go ahead, I’ll agree to anything you say.”
“Will there be braised chicken with rice flavor (Huang Men Ji) nutritional fluid?”
Ming Chunshan froze, looking down at Xia Pingwu, who was still staring at her, looking very earnest.
Seeing her stunned, Xia Pingwu hesitated and repeated: “Because I heard that the canteen at the Ability User School mostly serves braised chicken, we didn’t eat any braised chicken in the months before we enrolled.”
She watched Ming Chunshan’s expression, carefully considering: “Do you remember? We were worried we’d get tired of it.
“I’m a little craving it now. Can we go back and eat it?”
With Xia Pingwu’s mention, a distant memory tugged at Ming Chunshan’s impression.
She remembered.
“Okay, I’ll go back and get it for you to eat.” Ming Chunshan half-knelt to put on Xia Pingwu’s shoes. Her head was lowered, and her voice sounded a bit muffled, “Whatever flavor you want, I’ll push the R&D department to make it.”
Xia Pingwu also lowered her head. Watching Ming Chunshan slowly and meticulously tie her shoelaces, her heart suddenly skipped a beat:
“It’s a shame. I always thought I’d get sick of braised chicken at school back then, but I never expected…”
She cut herself off, feigning a lighthearted tone: “I wonder if the school still has it now.”
For some reason, Ming Chunshan felt that her Elder Sister was different today.
She was different even from the Elder Sister who had amnesia these past few days.
The amnesiac Elder Sister would proactively state her needs, but her tone was still distant, always feeling aloof.
But now, she felt that Elder Sister was trying to please her.
Like she was guessing what would make her happier and what would make her agree to her request.
Ming Chunshan immediately clenched the shoelace in her hand until the excessively tight knot dug into Elder Sister’s instep. She then awoke in a flurry and re-tied it.
Xia Pingwu noticed her shift and proactively asked: “What’s wrong?”
At this moment, Ming Chunshan, who had finished tying the laces, looked up and suddenly smiled: “For the school flavor, the nutritional fluid might not taste exactly the same.
“But… would you like to go to the school with me to try it?”
Seeing the stunned look in Xia Pingwu’s eyes, Ming Chunshan’s smile became even gentler:
“Ruan Zhujun said that the school’s anniversary celebration recently invited the three of us. Do you want to go with me?”
That’s right, just the three of us. That way, no other interns will get close to Elder Sister again.
Ming Chunshan was just thinking this when Xia Pingwu shifted her gaze: “I’d rather… not go.”
Not going? Why not go?
Ming Chunshan wanted to ask more, but from her angle, she saw some strange marks on the bed. She focused her eyes: “Elder Sister, are you bleeding? Where are you hurt?”
Xia Pingwu’s attention was immediately diverted. She looked back and waved her hand: “No, I got my period.”
She jumped off the bed: “I need to tell the doctor. The cleaning fee for this bedding set…”
Ming Chunshan stopped Xia Pingwu: “It’s only a little bit. We’ll tell the doctor on our way out, and I’ll pay the cleaning fee.”
She picked up her leather jacket, specifically using the thicker side to cover Xia Pingwu’s lower abdomen, and then looked at the back: “There’s some on your pants, it’s okay, we’ll go back and change.”
She picked up her bag and led Xia Pingwu out: “Let’s go. You need to take a painkiller first in the car.”
Ming Chunshan had just put Xia Pingwu’s bl00d-stained clothes into the wash basin to soak when the call from their alma mater came.
She rested one hand on the edge of the basin and picked up her phone with the other: “Hello?”
On the other side, Xia Pingwu, who had finished her hot water, pushed the door open. She was about to show the empty cup to Ming Chunshan when she saw her gesture to her:
The gesture told her to wait a moment.
Xia Pingwu then backed out, proactively closing the door. As she pulled the door shut, she heard a sentence drift through the crack:
“Don’t worry, I’ll come back with Elder Sister.
“Mhm, the only requirement is to suspend all ability activities for one day. Everything else is fine.”
So it’s the school anniversary celebration.
Xia Pingwu’s heart skipped a beat. She looked towards the side door of the bathroom, watching Ming Chunshan’s vaguely visible, mature profile, and hesitated for a moment—
If it’s the school, there should be data about the Second World War.
In that case, I might be able to find more information.
The school anniversary celebration day arrived quickly.
The person who came to pick them up was their counselor from that time. Xia Pingwu recognized her because she was in the photo taken during their time.
Even more fortunate was that only she, Ming Chunshan, and Ruan Zhujun were coming this time, allowing her more opportunity to inquire about the things she wanted to know.
I have to find a way to make Zhujun and Chunshan keep each other occupied.
What a shame…
“It looks like it’s just the two of you. Ruan Zhujun just called me and said the cleanup team had a sudden mission, so she couldn’t make it.”
The counselor led the way, smiling as she looked back,
“I heard that Pingwu is now back with the combat team to participate in work. Truly a model couple…”
Xia Pingwu didn’t hear the rest of the sentence.
It’s only Chunshan. How can I inquire about things from ten years ago?
If Chunshan finds out I’m investigating these things, she’ll be unhappy again.
Just then, her shoulder was suddenly tapped.
Xia Pingwu looked up and saw that she had reached the edge of a classroom.
Next to them, a teacher was introducing the contents of the New Student Guide to a new cohort.
The New Student Guide contained the usual topics: discussing Ability Users, the Ability Bureau, the strange beasts (Yisou), and also…
Strange Beast Transformation (Yisou-hua).
“In this world, those who fall and become strange beasts are those who cannot control their minds. Only every person who is strong and brave enough can become an Ability User.
“Strange Beast Transformation and the Ability User are two sides of the same coin. I hope all of you will make the right choice.”
The teacher on the podium spoke gently, but their tone was firm. Xia Pingwu stood by the door, feeling a bit heavy-hearted.
Did these young girls know?
The Ability Bureau they so wholeheartedly yearned for might be even more dangerous than the strange beasts.
Perilous, full of strife.
The counselor quietly said next to her: “Soon, you’ll be invited in to speak…”
At the same time, the teacher inside was saying: “I hope you can all be like the outstanding alumni, Xia Pingwu and Ming Chunshan, to sweep away the strange beasts and eliminate all evil.”
As the four characters for “eliminate all evil” fell, the display screen immediately showed those four characters written in a vigorous, flowing style.
The handwriting was very familiar; it was her own.
Looking at the signature, it was from the New Student Enrollment Ceremony when she wrote those four characters on the podium during her representative speech.
Xia Pingwu felt that leaving during the speech and Q&A session would be the best opportunity.
As the teacher on the stage began introducing them, she quietly whispered to Chunshan: “Chunshan, I feel a bit unwell and need to go to the restroom.”
Ming Chunshan immediately offered to go with her: “I’ll take you, and we’ll go to the infirmary to get some medicine?”
“No need.”
Xia Pingwu immediately interrupted her,
“It’s probably due to my period, and besides, the students are waiting. Hold the fort for me. I’ll be back to find you quickly after I finish.”
She subconsciously spoke quickly and too much. By the time she realized it belatedly, it was too late to take the words back.
So, she simply grabbed Ming Chunshan’s arm, looked her in the eyes, and gave a practiced, gentle smile.
Ming Chunshan was perhaps persuaded by her, but more likely, she trusted the school’s security measures. In any case, she didn’t say much and simply agreed.
Xia Pingwu immediately rushed to the restroom to finish up, then deliberately walked out slowly, clutching her abdomen, and walked along the wall for a couple of steps before heading towards the adjacent faculty workroom.
There was currently no one in the workroom. Xia Pingwu slowly walked in, randomly found a seat, and slid into it. Then, her eyes quickly scanned everything in the workroom.
There were quite a few history textbooks. Xia Pingwu pretended to be passing the time and flipped through them one by one. The content was similar to the information online, mostly simply stating that the Teacher’s Wife (Shimu) sacrificed herself in the Second World War.
However, the causes and consequences of the Second World War were more detailed, giving her more room to maneuver.
She was just about to look for information about the Resistance faction in the teacher’s reference materials when footsteps came from the doorway.
The counselor stopped at the entrance, letting out a sigh of relief: “Pingwu, you’re here.”
She quickly walked in: “Chunshan was getting a bit anxious in the classroom since you hadn’t returned for so long and asked me to look for you. I was quite scared when I didn’t see you in the restroom.”
Xia Pingwu gave a faint smile: “Teacher, I suddenly felt severe pain and didn’t bring any medicine with me, so I came here to sit and casually flip through a book to pass the time, hoping to return after the pain subsides.”
She paused, her smile deepening slightly: “Chunshan is very capable; she can stall for time and won’t cause any teaching mishaps.”
“Indeed…”
Hearing this, the counselor’s face suddenly showed a look of reminiscence, and her tone softened a little,
“I remember back when you were in school, Chunshan was like your shadow.
“I never expected that now, the situation is completely reversed.”
She took a few steps closer, seemingly wanting to say something, but only sighed, her warm, dry hand stroking the top of Xia Pingwu’s head:
“My dear, it must be tough watching Chunshan work alone all these years, right?”
