Chapter 9: Elder Sister, We Depend On Each Other.
Ming Chunshan didn’t speak. She just tucked in the corner of the quilt for her and whispered:
“Elder Sister, I’m going to miss you.”
After Ming Chunshan left, Xia Pingwu lay back on the bed, not as composed as she had seemed just moments before.
That first major battle with the Anomaly felt too far away for her, who had just enrolled in the Academy it was so distant it was only briefly mentioned in history books, and a dark subject in her Mistress’s mouth.
The outside world always seemed to be vague about it, but she knew she was born for it.
When her Mistress chose to adopt her, it was because she saw her innate talent as an Anomaly specialist.
She had since worked diligently, all for the day she could fight side-by-side with her Mistress.
And now, someone told her that it was all over.
This world had undergone the Second Great War, and she had indeed fought alongside her Mistress:
Only, her Mistress was dead.
And she had to temporarily rest and recuperate.
Amidst her thoughts, she suddenly heard a slight “click” of a door opening nearby. Xia Pingwu kept her eyes closed, not moving. She heard someone deliberately softening their steps, approaching her bed bit by bit.
The soft quilt was silently lifted. Someone gently sat on the bed, causing a slight dip in the mattress. Xia Pingwu waited a few seconds, and just as the newcomer started taking off their shoes and socks, she quickly flicked the switch on the wall.
Suddenly, the lights flooded the room. The energy-saving lamp illuminated the figure by the bed, shining on Ming Chunshan’s face.
Ming Chunshan showed no surprise on her face. She smiled at Xia Pingwu, and without slowing down, she crawled onto the bed and rested her head on Xia Pingwu’s shoulder:
“Elder Sister, I missed you so much.”
Her tone was sweet, just as it had always been.
Xia Pingwu almost couldn’t help but curve her eyes, but she managed to keep her lips tightly shut. She reached out a finger and touched Ming Chunshan’s forehead:
“We agreed before that you can only sleep with me when Mistress punishes you.”
But as the words left her mouth, Ming Chunshan was already rubbing her soft hair against Xia Pingwu’s neck:
“Elder Sister, I used to sleep with you every day. I still can’t sleep without you. Can you just pretend everything I said before was nonsense?”
“No, you can’t.” Xia Pingwu’s tone was firm. “You’re ten years older now. You can’t go back on your word.”
“Well, I don’t care. I’m already asleep.” Ming Chunshan immediately retreated, throwing herself onto the soft, large bed, and tightly shut her eyes.
No movement came from beside her.
Ming Chunshan subconsciously grabbed the sheet, then continued: “Your fever hasn’t fully subsided these past few days. I’m here to take care of you.”
While the Anomaly incident was still fresh, she had requested to review the recent surveillance footage of their home. She watched it frame by frame, meticulously, finding no issues.
But the less there was, the more afraid she felt.
Thinking this, Ming Chunshan slowly moved closer to Xia Pingwu with a righteous expression. “Are you still uncomfortable right now?”
“I think I’m fine.” Xia Pingwu paused, turning her back. “However, since I’m sick, it’s better if we keep our distance.”
Ming Chunshan kept her eyes closed, endured for a few seconds, then gave up and rolled over to turn off the light. Then, she lay back down, fumbled around, and finally caught Xia Pingwu’s hand.
She drew out her words: “Being sick is fine too. I’ve been really tired lately. We can both lie in bed together.”
The person beside her finally couldn’t hold back a laugh. Xia Pingwu didn’t struggle anymore, but Ming Chunshan, sensing something, held her breath for a few seconds. Finally, she heard the person beside her ask in a low voice:
“Chunshan, when will I be fully recovered?”
The question had finally come.
Although Elder Sister said she woke up here after falling asleep, whether there was another hidden reason for this was anyone’s guess.
Before anything else, she needed to put Elder Sister’s mind at ease.
Ming Chunshan paused for a moment, then moved closer again, wrapping her arm around Xia Pingwu’s waist:
“The doctor says it depends on your condition, but you’ll definitely get better.”
She pretended to be very sleepy and yawned, then tightly shut her eyes.
Everything that happened today was too unexpected. She was afraid that if she kept her eyes open, Elder Sister, who knew her so well, would notice something wrong.
But the next moment, Xia Pingwu gripped Ming Chunshan’s hand.
Her voice was gentle and reassuring:
“You were covered in bl00d today. I’m very worried about you.
“I want to recover quickly and fight alongside you.”
Ming Chunshan stiffened. Xia Pingwu had already turned to lie flat, put Ming Chunshan’s hand back on her side, then carefully pulled up her quilt, and closed her eyes: “Sleep early. Good night.”
In the darkness, Ming Chunshan on the other side lightly rubbed her tingling fingertips and slowly opened her eyes.
The warmth still lingered.
The next day, when Ming Chunshan came to knock, Xia Pingwu had already been sitting in front of her laptop for a while.
Unexpectedly finding herself ten years in the future, she had searched the entire bedroom. Besides various household items, she couldn’t find any other Bureau of Anomalies-related things concerning herself.
Except for the group photo she saw when she first woke up.
Having no choice, she decided to use her laptop to look up her experiences over the years.
The first problem she faced was—what was the startup password?
So, as Ming Chunshan pushed the door open, she heard Xia Pingwu ask her: “Chunshan, do you know my startup password?”
“I’ve never asked you. I don’t know either,” Ming Chunshan walked a few steps closer. “Elder Sister, what flavor of nutrient solution do you want today?”
Nutrient solutions are that common now?
Xia Pingwu collected her thoughts and answered casually: “Just my usual?”
Ming Chunshan paused, not replying.
It wasn’t until Xia Pingwu sensed something was wrong and looked up at her that Ming Chunshan half-crouched down, leaning closer:
“Nutrient solutions are also administered during your usual treatment. Elder Sister usually… doesn’t eat with me much.”
She paused, then stood up: “We still have some rations of vegetables, fruit, meat, and fish at home. I’ll go cook something.”
Xia Pingwu nodded, then as if reminded of something, she spread her hands: “Speaking of treatment, do I need to be treated right now…”
“Since Elder Sister suddenly has amnesia, we should find a doctor to examine you first,” saying this, Ming Chunshan held the doorknob to close the door, retreated a few steps, but still couldn’t resist adding: “As for the password, why don’t you try Mother’s death anniversary?”
In the kitchen, Ming Chunshan was feeling restless and almost burned herself on the edge of the pot while plating the food.
She held the spatula, stunned in place for several seconds, then sighed in self-defeat, closing her eyes tightly.
Just then, footsteps came from the doorway. Xia Pingwu poked her head in and said: “Chunshan, I know the password now.”
“Good.” Ming Chunshan replied, steadily regaining her composure, looking very focused on the pot.
But out of the corner of her eye, she could see Xia Pingwu still staring at her.
What is she looking at?
Ming Chunshan quietly gripped the spatula and unconsciously smiled:
“What? Did I happen to guess right? Don’t worry. Even if I knew, I wouldn’t look at your computer.”
“Ah, you really are Chunshan. You’ve grown up so much,” Xia Pingwu leaned closer, her tone also carrying a faint smile. “I wonder who it was who used to love looking at every one of my logbooks and counting how many times I mentioned them.”
Ming Chunshan’s heart jumped, followed by a faint surge of bitterness.
She didn’t know if it was because she remembered the past or because she had happened to guess the password.
Yes, in any case, it was ten years ago.
At that time, she was clinging to Elder Sister every day, but now… she just felt the distance growing.
The only thing that hadn’t changed was that Elder Sister still deeply revered her Mother.
“But you guessed wrong. It wasn’t Mistress’s death anniversary,” Xia Pingwu suppressed her smile slightly, but her tone was still upbeat. “It was our wedding anniversary. I saw it on the back of the photo.”
“Elder Sister, let’s eat first.”
In fact, Xia Pingwu had known for a long time that she was completely inept at cooking.
She didn’t know if her cooking skills had improved in the last ten years, but she did know that Ming Chunshan’s had definitely improved.
Xia Pingwu sat at the table, holding her spoon, thinking this to herself.
She subconsciously poked the food in her bowl, and then, with a flick of her spoon, she started picking out the shredded potatoes.
Ming Chunshan happened to walk over to set down the last dish. She paused, took the plate away from Xia Pingwu’s hand: “I’m sorry… I’ll eat this dish.”
Xia Pingwu waved her spoon, looking at the other dishes: “It’s fine. After all, you haven’t cooked for me in a long time.”
It was already hard work for Chunshan to cook. It was normal to occasionally forget what she didn’t like to eat ten years ago.
But Ming Chunshan felt she should say something, at least more than just an apology.
However, for some reason, in that instant, she suddenly couldn’t say anything at all.
Xia Pingwu had already reached for another dish. Seeing Ming Chunshan still standing motionless, she looked up at her, signaling: “Come, let’s eat together.”
Ming Chunshan slowly sat down, picked up her chopsticks, and subtly glanced at Xia Pingwu while picking up a piece of food. Only then did she speak again:
“Elder Sister, I’ll take extended leave to stay home with you these next few days until we find the cause of your amnesia.”
She paused, softening her voice:
“I know you’re worried about the Bureau of Anomalies, but…”
She deliberately paused, and sure enough, she saw Xia Pingwu slow her movement and close her mouth, which had been about to speak.
So, Ming Chunshan finally continued:
“Some unusual things have been happening lately. I suspect your amnesia is related to it. In any case, you should not easily trust anyone else besides me.”
She quietly watched Xia Pingwu tightly purse her lips, but her voice didn’t stop:
“Elder Sister, we are the only ones who can depend on each other.”
Just then, a knock at the door sounded abruptly.
Ming Chunshan stood up: “That’s probably the doctor I contacted this morning to check on you. I’ll invite her in first, and you can get checked after you finish eating.”
Xia Pingwu didn’t reply. Her gaze followed Ming Chunshan to the door, watching her lean over to open it. Then, a warm voice came from the doorway:
“Pingwu! I’ve come to see you!”
