Chapter 12: They Truly Are My Girl(s)
“So, Branseen joined the Knights’ Order, thanks to Jinguye’s ‘invitation’ (read: she twisted his arm),” I stretched out, giving a massive yawn from my chair. “And then they rode off into the sunset and lived happily ever after.”
“But, Dad…”
My youngest daughter, Fei, cocked her head, her little demon-tail wagging behind her.
“Why did Jinguye actually want to marry Branseen?”
Awwwww, my heart! She’s too adorable! That’s my girl.
“Dad!”
“Uh… look, love works in mysterious ways, doesn’t it? Okay, fine… let’s just go with love at first sight!”
“Dad, you sound totally shifty. Your words are dripping with guilt.”
Well, yeah. I didn’t believe the load of old rubbish I just spewed, so why should she? It was pure, unadulterated nonsense. But if you want the real reason…
It’s probably because I’m… no, no, no… it’s because Branseen is just that handsome, right?
Phew. Close call. Almost spilled the beans there.
“Dad, could you please…” Fei hung her head, her soft voice brimming with earnest pleading.
“What’s up, sweetheart?”
“Will you come and train with me?”
Train? Is she trying to learn my assassin techniques?
“Sure thing.”
“Can we do it in my room?”
“Absolutely.”… Right, the basics of assassination: you got to practice in a small, enclosed space. Smart kid. That’s my daughter, alright, thinking ahead.
But wait, what happened to the assassination training? What happened to the cute daughter’s sweet request?
Seriously… how did this go so wrong, so fast?
“Dad,” Fei’s innocent, baby face had a perfectly harmless smile plastered on it. Her left hand waved me over from the doorway where I stood frozen. “Come on over.”
Her right hand… that right hand… I gulped.
“Fei… what’s with your right hand?”
“Tee-hee… Dad, finally noticed, have you?” Fei flicked her wrist, and several cracks instantly appeared on the wall beside her. “Mum gave this to me. She said a demoness has to know how to use a whip to ‘discipline’ the naughty boys.”
WOAH, HANG ON! What on earth, honey? What twisted things have you been teaching our daughter? Seriously, don’t pass your personal damage onto the next generation!
“Father dear, I’m home!”
Just in time, my savior arrived at this awkward, life-threatening moment! I turned back thankfully to my eldest daughter, Funa.
“Fei, what did you do to Dad?” Funa meticulously checked me from head to toe. “Father dear has an irregular heartbeat, high temperature, pale skin, and rigid limbs.” Funa nodded knowingly. “This is the classic physical reaction when deep-seated terror is provoked by an external force. Fei, what exactly did you do to him?”
Look, Funa, I appreciate the concern, but you need to chill out a bit! All that excitement is bad for your health.
“Nothing!” Fei quickly shook her head, her tail dropping obediently to the floor.
…Deep-seated terror, huh?
“Master.”
Hearing that bright, familiar voice, I smiled back. “Deputy Commander Carter, good to see you’re doing well.”
“Master, your daughter is just phenomenal. Honestly, I’m practically out of things to teach her,” Carter lowered his head, a little embarrassed.
In stark contrast, Funa proudly stuck out her chest—which, naturally, was just as flat as her mother’s. “Hmph!”
“You can’t just talk your way out of combat experience with technique alone,” I took a calming sip of tea. “Besides, Carter, you’re miles better at bayonet drills than I ever was. It’s an honor to have you mentoring my little girl.”
“That’s all down to your guidance, Master.”
“I never guided you to sneak out and practice every night, did I?”
“Hahahaha.”
Seeing both my girl(s) now look intensely interested, I knew what was coming next:
“Father dear, can you tell us some stories about when you were younger in the Knights’ Order?”
Seriously, I’m only twenty-seven! Stop talking like I’m some crusty old man in his fifties! I’m still young! And Carter, mate, you’re a grown man now! Stop looking at me with the same puppy-dog eyes as the kids!
“Alright, alright… so, the truth is… all this drama is actually thanks to a certain terrible Commander of the Knights’ Order…”
