- Chapter 8 - That Night, the Girl Was Fourteen, the Boy Was Sixteen
Fire, great fire, the village of the Blaze Clan.
—
“Shh, don’t make a sound.” The boy held the girl’s hand, quickly rounded the alley, and hid inside a broken, abandoned carriage at the edge of the village.
“Big brother, who are those people, and why are they killing the people in our village?” Under the moonlight, the girl’s wide red pupils glistened.
“Those people are assassins from a certain dark organization,” the boy strained his ears to listen. There were ten lurking three hundred paces away, plus the eight currently massacring people in the village.
…A total of eighteen people dispatched, then?
“I asked two questions, big… bro… ther.” The girl gave a warm smile, but for some unknown reason, the boy felt a chill run down his spine.
The boy frowned, recalling the second question the girl had asked: Why are they killing the people in your village?
“Because… because… I heard that a person with the Demon King’s bloodline appeared in your village…”
“An inheritor, is that right?” The girl cut the boy off.
“And I’m the lucky inheritor, so those people are here to root out future trouble, aren’t they?” The girl silently watched the flames outside soaring higher, listening to the incessant cries of anguish.
“Yes.”
“When you turn fifteen, which is tomorrow, the Demon King’s bloodline will gradually awaken. If it’s not suppressed, the inheritor’s personality will become increasingly cruel and bloodthirsty as the awakening progresses, leading them to drown in the desire for slaughter, unable to escape. Finally, upon full awakening, you will directly slaughter your way to the Demon King’s Castle, where you will duel the current Demon King. Only the victor can claim the title of Demon King.”
“Is there any way to stop the bloodline from awakening?” The girl narrowed her eyes, keenly sensing the hidden message in the boy’s words.
“There… there is… but…” The boy swallowed hard, feeling profoundly that even if the girl were killed, it would be a million times better than this suggestion.
“But what?” The girl tilted her head and smiled, though her eyes flashed with a cold light.
“You need to engage in sexual intercourse with a member of the opposite s3x.”
“…Sexual intercourse, you say?” The girl looked a bit speechless.
She was more mature than her peers and knew what sexual intercourse was.
Perhaps being butchered would be better?
“Do you want to die?” The boy seemed to read her mind. “Once you’re dead, there’s nothing left.”
“Does it matter?” The girl closed her eyes, unable to forget the cries of the villagers before they died.
“If the Demon King’s bloodline in you awakens…” the boy lowered his head. “…Many, many more villages will vanish because of it.”
The girl drew back her distant gaze.
“I’ve already lost too much. What’s the harm in losing more?”
The fiery red pupils that once shone with bright wisdom were gone… they were broken.
The boy faced a girl whose eyes had lost their light and her hope.
I won’t make the same mistake twice, the boy resolved silently, then quickly tore off his tattered sleeve and blindfolded himself.
“Forgive me, Lady Huohui.”
That night, the girl was fourteen, and the boy was sixteen, inside the carriage.
“Was it a dream?” Bransien tried to raise his hand to shield his eyes from the sunlight streaming into the room.
“Hmm?” Was his hand being held down?
Bransien’s gaze drifted downwards. Sure enough, a mass of something was nestled in his arms.
“Mmh… Bro… you’re awake then…” Jingong Ye made a strange sound before opening her eyes.
…Personality is normal. Yes, the Demon King bloodline successfully suppressed.
“…” Bransien saw that Jingong Ye had no intention of getting off him. However, the wounds from last night’s fierce battle were still there, and Jingong Ye’s golden breastplate, regrettably, was sitting right on top of his largest injury.
“Ow!” Bransien pointed at Jingong Ye’s breastplate. “Get off me, now!”
“Oh? Is my big, plump, well-formed, super-sized chest crushing you?”
“Must… you always jump out to be the clown?”
“Death sentence… Bransien… death sentence… I, your Commander, will definitely butcher you!!”
“Heh.” Bransien rolled out of bed. “I’m going to order breakfast.”
“Apple pie.”
“Didn’t you just eat that yesterday?”
“Hmph! Mind your own business!” Jingong Ye puffed out her cheeks and burrowed into the duvet.
This look… is so different from the Queen of the Whip who rode for a thousand miles last night…
Bransien opened the travel bag on the table and, from the three crystals hidden in the inner layer, picked one yellow one. Snap. He crushed it, and a soft white light continuously spilled from his palm, gradually flowing through his limbs.
For a moment, Bransien was completely enveloped in the warm white light. Ten seconds later, the white light faded, and all the wounds on his body had healed.
Tsk, only two crystals left. I need to find time to go there.
“Two apple pies, two glasses of milk, room six.”
“Did you help me get dressed?” Bransien asked indistinctly, an apple pie hanging from his mouth.
“Well, did you sleepwalk and put them on yourself then?” Jingong Ye rolled her eyes at him.
“Did it not occur to you to treat my wounds after you regained your sanity?” Bransien swallowed the last bite of his apple pie, staring at the empty plate.
“No,” Jingong Ye replied decisively, without pausing her slicing of the apple pie.
“What if you’d completely killed me off?”
“Then it would only prove that you… Bransien… were just that much,” Jingong Ye said clearly, sipping her cup of milk.
If you had died because of me… then… then… you shouldn’t have given me hope in the first place!
It was nearly noon when Jingong Ye returned to the Knight Headquarters after parting ways with Bransien.
She took off her cloak and hung it on the hook beside the main door. “I’m back.”
“Commander!”
“Sis!”
“Commander.”
“Where are Dixian and Carter?” Jingong Ye counted heads. Two people were missing.
After the battle the day before yesterday, Commander Jingong Ye had given the Knights a day off.
“They went to train with the other idle knights in the barracks.”
“Exactly! They have a day off, and they’re still training!” Lani complained. A day off, but they were training—and, crucially, they’d taken the handsome guy she wanted to ask out.
“Heh heh,” Jingong Ye let out a pleasant chuckle, seemingly reading Lani’s thoughts. “Come on, Lani, let’s go shopping together.”
“Yes!”
“Can I come too?”
[“No!”] Jingong Ye and Lani said in unison. “This is a girls-only outing.”
